When I had covid last year and was awake at 3am here in the US, I watched some AFL games. It was a lot of fun to watch. I’d like to see more games as the rules make the sport entertaining.
Very good interview. Mr Cox may not have all the skills, but he has the courage which is needed to play. He is an inspiration to many. He has everyones respect. It is only those that don't follow the club Mr Cox plays for that will have any negative comments. I follow a different club to his, I respect all players. Mr Cox did a great job explaining to the reporter.
To borrow a phrase from basketball, he has one skill that can't be taught: height. He's just plain tall (I believe he is the tallest player in the AFL). That height advantage helps overcome many deficiencies. Cox is very athletic, though, and he's been a quick learner.
We bloody love ya Coxy, always doing great work for the sport both domestically and internationally. Hopefully we’ll see the USAFL pick up to big things with your representation!
I didn't know a thing about AFL aside from its existence until seeing this, but did play American football at a competitive level. I instantly loved everything I saw about this game - I'd watch every week (I don't even know how often games are played yet) if it caught on here and we had teams
your new video left out something important that was in the previous video ... the graphics showing the comparative size of the fields from different football codes.
l discovered footy in 1992 and chose to follow brisbane who then was the bears they then merged with the fitzroy lions in 1996 and became the brisbane lions l has a brisbane lions jersey and a red sherrin match ball
I don’t like the Magpies but I do have very immense respect and admiration for Mason Cox making it in the Land Down Under in one of the most amazing sports in the world. I do like some of the stalwarts like Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom and their captain Darcy Moore. They have the third most flags and have lost the most Grand Finals (including three by a margin of 15 points combined; 1964 four points; 1966 a solitary point against St. Kilda; 1970 when they had a seven goal lead only to lose by less than two goals) plus two of the three drawn Grand Finals (1977, 2010)
This dude is inspirational. Kudos to CBS for not running their usual tired stories about race and the environment. Mason is great. CBS, not so much. But good job this time.😎
Here's how to play it. 1. Get the 'ball'. 2. Punt the 'ball' to the tall guy in the massive semi-circle. 3. Get a free kick at the sticks for 3 points. Don't worry if you miss, you'll still get a point.
The brutality is overstated. You can only tackle someone who has the ball and their are strict rules on tackles and injuries are no more common than in the NFL. Played properly there is very little tacking because players should be constantly passing the ball to teammates; non-deliberate collisions are more likely a cause of pain. (unlike NFL that involved collisions and tackles in every play)
You have to give it to a guy that had everything in his life mapped out but decided to move to Australia and try playing a game he hadnt even heard of month before. Hes blazing a trail I hope others follow because then the world will wake up to our great sport.
@@Mo-yd8xc Mason had just finished his degree and had a 6 figure job lined up in the States . I dont think he was really worried about making it in NBA . But he gave it all up to move to Australia to play a game he had only just heard of. That is a pretty big risk if you asked me.
I think everyone was pleasantly surprised how quickly Cox picked up the skills. It's not an easy game for someone completely unfamiliar with it to pick up in their 20s
I've played both. Football at D1 level (OLB) and rugby in an amateur league in Korea that surprisingly had a lot of big and fast pacific islander dudes. and pads definitely make it safer for you to hit a lot harder. the impact hit you can put on someone while wearing pads is similar to why boxers can punch so hard without breaking their hands. You're still going to feel the brunt of it and Id say the tackles I was able to perform were much more devastating with pads on. And these days, the helmet is the only thing that's really keeping you safe as the pads keep getting smaller as players want lighter equipment. But the helmet to helmet being made illegal is def making it safer. No pads usually means arm tackles and you're not tackling even a decent hs running back with arm tackles. In rugby there would be guys who try to run you over but it was more juking to avoid any head on collisions, whereas football was damn near all about that so they can get another yard. Just Wayyy more contact in football in general. But I digress.
The game absolutely has rules and you absolutely can't punch people. And the main difference to NFL is not that they don't wear pads. Mason has done the game a great disservice by explaining it so to millions of people.
"No rules" is misleading. Indeed, the chaotic nature of the sport stems in large part from a very important rule: holding the ball. If you get tackled without disposing of the ball when you've had prior opportunity to do so, of if you dispose of the ball incorrectly (generally dropping or throwing it), or if you don't make a sufficient attempt to dispose of it, or you dive on the ball on the ground, the other team gets a free kick. Sometimes I think of Aussie rules as the roughest game of hot potato on the planet.

steal? You mean dominate the sport? Don't worry, the USA has no clue about this sport. That's the only way the US doesn't become the best or top 5 in a sport as it is the most successful sports nation in the world
Disappointing. I’ve no doubt they came away from that with 30-60min of interview footage and they just went with…. Brutal sport, No pads or helmets, Guys getting knocked out and losing their teeth!
If Mason wasn't any good, he wouldn't have lasted this long. Jason Holmes (another American) played 5 games and then was dropped. He couldn't cut it. Mason has cut it. Sure, his height plays an advantage, but as a ruck (midfielder), he needs to be good everywhere. He deserves his spot.
