I think you need to do more research. So for example, Cantonese and mandarin are different and can’t understand each other (unless they learn) but are Chinese. Which one is Chinese? It is similar to us, having different group of Hmong. This group happens to be a different group of Hmong with a bit different language.
Hmong have many clothing and looks. If all you see Hmong people looks like in the western and southeast asian countries then you need to look more into china. Here are some similar group to Hmong, they are the Hmu, Qo Xoing and AHmao. All of these group and Hmong are under one name "Miao" in chinese term.
