Christian bale actually lost twenty years for this part to fit the role
😂😂😂
Haha 😆
Lool
I’m howling 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣 lmfao !!!!!
One of the best and most Underrated Spielberg Movie.
Very underrated...
*literally the only one*
this movie is my childhood, fantastic.
@@RideLight777 wawit, what?¡ who is the pedo? spielberg or bale?¡ O_o
@Tony A. Thank you for ur kind words 😎
I watched this movie 20 years ago ... I still shiver and feel tears in my eyes when I see the trailer. One of the best movies I've watched in my entire life.
Me also.
Me too 👍
So you have not watched many films then?
@@antispindr8613 ha ha 😂
Me too!
This movie and Christian Bale should have won some award. This is incredible.
It won a Bafta didn't it?
It won 6 Oscars
@@jonathanwilson9454 it received 6 Oscar nominations but no wins. It did win 3 BAFTAs though.
The Last Emperor, also about WW2 and Japan’s occupation of China, took home all the Oscars. Both phenomenal films but they just ran up against each other. Like saying well Lebron should have won the championship this year but then you see Tim Duncan in his prime was on the other side.
And the award for the most over-hyped, over-long and over-rated film goes to...
Christian Bale goes to great lengths to look the part. He looks like a kid in this one.
@Who am I Really That is pretty good then. I didn't know that.

Speilberg could see Christian's talent at such a young age. Amazing
@eating sugar no papa talent = hard work and dedication and motivation
@@chrisbatson3402 no thats not what talent is
@@CombatKing1237 then what is it?
@@chrisbatson3402 im not an English teacher but i think that talent is more your natural skill with something than the effort you put toward something. you can be amazing at something without being talented
@@CombatKing1237 yes of course whatever you want to label it hard work / talent doesn't matter its the same result.
My English professor told me this was the greatest film ever made. After watching I’d say I agree.
I love it, but I wouldn’t say ever made.
Christian Bale is a born performer. A true thespian. I don't particularly like war films that much but I've watched this movie so many times. One of Steven Spielberg's most underrated films of all time.
you sound ignorant
I saw this movie when i was probably 6, and it's stuck in my mind ever since. i need to watch this again.
It must have been practically impposible to understand the plot, being just 6 years old...!
I did watch when I was a kid, tho I never got the beginning. Got me in the feelz tho
Was too, probably 6 when I watched it, forgot the name, but it was stuck in my mind, i googled what i remembered about it and got the title.
I watched it about 15 years before. Remembered the name somehow and some screenshots in my mind. I am 31 now. Need to watch it again.
Same ... Haven't seen it since! And yes the plot was difficult to understand but still touching and terrifying at times intense movie for a child haha
Cried so much watching this movie when I was young.
I cant stand emotional movies man.
Christian Bale really does strikes me as the actor of OUR age. From Empire of the the sun, to Velvet Goldmine, to Batman, to Vice. What a very very fine Actor.
A magnificent, underrated actor and one of the great films of all time.
I watch this movie when i was 14 (now im 39) by "accident" I love it since, and the acting of that boy AMAZED ME, I have no idea in that time ad more than 20 years later who that boy was, time after i start noticing Bale performances, and I respect him, but never had a clue that that boy in that amazing movie I watched when i was 14 it was Christian Bale. Definitely he is one of the BEST ACTORS maybe in worlds history, he has the gift and he works it hard and passionately...
I was 14 too when I watched it -in 1987 on the big screen. Unforgettable experience.
I also watched this for an "accident" on television. Would you please tell me how it happened? I'm so curious, because our experiences seem to be similar!
I saw this movie as a kid. This is the most real movie to watch about the tragic sufferings WW2 brought on so many people. Next to the movie The Pianist this was a WOW of the true life you would have to go through then. Still amazing 30 years later!
You think this is tragic, watch unbroken
@@nickcoryell2516 both of u should watch Come and See
@@MusicNinja12345 I have and I didn't really like it
The Last Emperor was made the same year- it is a pretty powerful film about WW2 as well.
Yes come and see is more horrible
Even when Christian Bale was 13 he looked like a perpetual 40 year old man.
Heber - That's an exaggeration, of course, but there's no doubt there was an undeniable process of aging that Bale went through while filming this movie...Just look at him at the beginning of the story, representing 11 or 12, and then compare him with the much older one reuniting with his parents, looking 14 or 15 !
@@pedrolistacarey4880 WHERE'S THE TRIGGER???
John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, Nigel Havers, Joe Pantoliano, Leslie Phillips, Robert Stephens, Paul McGann,
and introducing Christian Bale.
Wrong. He remained as cute and cool.
@Ursula Ann and yeah I think he was 19 in Little Women but seemed so much older. Puberty hit him hard lol
I can't believe Christian bale didn't get a academy award for this. I rewatch this every few years and every time i just blown away by bale.
Christian Bale deserves an Oscar for his role in Empire of the Sun; for his depiction of Jaymie before the war, another for his transition to Jim, Jim's humanity throughout his imprisonment including towards the Japanese people, Jim's boyish and playful nature, and for the last scene when Jim comforts his own mother and closes his eyes in relief. Brilliant acting 👏
The theme song will always stick with me. I never understood how this movie did not get that much recognition. Sometimes you watch a movie when you are young and then watch it as an adult and think to yourself that the movie wasn't that great. But this is an absolute gem even watching it now, nearly 40 years later!!
One of the best films of all time for sure.
Well what do you expect from Steven Spielberg?
Of the 80s
Ever
Definetely my favorite.
Seriously? I don't think so!
Question: Did Christian Bale sing in Empire of the Sun?
Answer: Empire of the Sun makes significant use of a Welsh lullaby called Suo Gân. The song is referenced throughout the film, and our hero Jim (played by Christian Bale) can be seen singing it in two major scenes. However, that isn’t actually Bale himself singing. Instead, the track was laid down by James Rainbird, a young singer from Rustington in England.
Watching this movie as a kid was the moment that i realized one day my mum and dad won't be here and I'll have to fend for myself.
A terrifying idea for a child
One of the greatest movies of all time
Young Christian Bale great perfomence
One of the most profoundly moving films ever made. It is so heartbreaking and thematically perfect. This and Louis Malle's Goodbye Children are my two favorite war films because they are from the child's point of view.
Louis Malle's film is so moving. I was talking to someone about it the other day, and we both were wowed by the depth of that film.
Can't believe I watched this movie without noticing the kid was played by Christian Bale ! 😯
This film reminds me of my grandmother, she past 8 years ago but everytime I hear the sound track it reminds me of her. We used to watch it in her house every couple of months with the family around. Rest in peace nana x
I remember watching this in graduate school with my now husband and his roommates. We all loved it. It is one of Spielberg's best films and it's a shame it didn't get more recognition at the time. But he's such a good director, you can't always give him the prize when's he nominated, because then he'd just have all the prizes. I watched "The Last Emperor" which came out the same year and won the Oscar, as well. It was a very fine film but I thought this was better. I didn't even know it had been directed by Spielberg until years later.
Welsh singing for those of you who don’t know,he’s singing a welsh lullaby..cymru am byth...
Suo-Gan
I remember when I was a kid in the 90s crying over this 😢
I just watched it again after many, many years on tv and I have the feeling this film is underrated.... Nobody cares much about it anymore.... Maybe because it has no superior message or deals with personal circumstances one could relate to todays. Being lonely in China is a difficult subject to sell.
@pete knicks HEY GUYS, I JUST HEARD ABOUT THIS REVOLUTIONARY CURE FOR EVERY WORLD'S PROBLEMS!!! IT'S CALLED CYNICISM!!!!!
This movie is about Japan right around the time they attacked Pearl Harbor, so the two shining bright scenes he mistakenly took for God was the two atom bombs being dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Saw this movie as a kid and it's been burned into my memory. This movie is something special.
OMG Christian Bale!!!!! At that age ??!!
The man has HUUUUGE talent:)
Saw this years ago just bought this and other old dvds off eBay
My late son Evan and I both absolutely loved this movie.
This is still one of my favorite movies.
Hits me right in the gut every time.
My history teacher showed us this. Good movie.
Me too.
I saw it in the theater and cried.
When we watched it in school the same thing but I tried to hide it
Surprised it never was nominated for any Oscar in 1988 especially Spielberg for directing.
i forgot all about this movie. never even realized it was bale. I'll have to rewatch it for sure
The most underrated movie of all times.
a masterpiece...even now I am moved to tears
1st movie that was shown in my film class back in high school .. I'll never forget it .. Truly remarkable
That was one hell of a movie. I was surprised how closely it follows the book too.
She just slapped Bruce Wayne...
How dare she slap what will become Batman!
just like rachel
Maybe that is how he became Batman lol. All that inner rage. Plus he did like things that flew lol.
@@what_memes_are_these9824 its 1987 he become Batman in 2005, 2008 and 2012
During this scene Christian was told it will be a fake slap but SS told the actress to slap him for real to get the real look of shock on his face... true story ... 🇯🇵
Christian bale is amazing
Criminal that Bale didn't win the best actor award.I've not seen a kid act this good since.
I was maybe 7 the first time I've seen this movie. It kept lingering somewhere in the back of my head. Today I found it. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
This is my favorite kid war film ever made by the worlds greatest director
Patrick Bateman was never the same after what he witnessed as a child, growing up in an internment camp in Japanese occupied Manchuria.
A good, solid film. Very memorable, and well worth watching. A departure from most Hollywood style films.
Mr. BALE is one of the best actors of today. He played this role to the max. And the movie where he played a magician in he was great in. My opinion only
The saddest scene in the movie is were a guy shots a japanese pilot whos trying to help jim to open a mango in half
So, I ran across this on accident. I last saw this when I was 9, and I haven't see nit since because I watched it with my dad. I got tears in my eyes and it hurts how much I wish I could go back then.
I love this movie . I was just a kid then. I watched this movie by myself in the Philippines. Now I’m a grown up man living in New York still love this movie .
Probably my all time favorite trailer. The movie is of course a masterpiece too, but this trailer itself is really great in its own right
This kids got serious talent wonder if he can grow and play legendary character like Batman.
He did it
REALLY?! 😕
"Kid, you're starting to get on my nerves." -Frank Demarest. I kept thinking the same thing through most of the film.
I’m shocked Christian Bale didn’t get an Oscar nomination for this!
I’m in love with filmmaking (currently studying) our professor told us to chose the film or art that inspired us to become filmmakers and I chose this movie. This movie takes you on a emotional rollercoaster from laughs (Jim’s shenanigans) to sadness to relief when he finally sees that American plane. Amazing movie and definitely underrated. Don’t even get me started on Christins bale. A true thespian.
One of the few movies that made me cry
One of the best movies of all time
i watched this movie way too many times :D
Wow. This time Christian Bale actually transformed to a kid here! Amazing performance as always from the legend himself.
I wish we knew how he does that.
@@lawenforcer9864 he is just extremely talented , and more
you can't even come up with an original comment, much less a good one. pathetic. you're a sad person.
I remember watching this movie as a kid and for the life of me I couldn’t remember the name! It’s such a powerful movie and the ending is so brilliant 😭 I can’t wait to watch this again
Sou gan is one of the best song ever. Btw this movie is touching.
Yes Suo Gan is beautiful! It's a traditional Welsh lullaby, my mam used to sing it to me when I was little :)
One of the best movies I ever watched, this movie is about i 35 years old.
empire of the sun and schindler’s list my childhood fave old movie ironically how both created by the one Steven Spielberg BRAVO! 👏🏼
wow, this film gave me nostalgia about something i never experienced 😭
The power of good cinema, William Shakespeare said the best acting is when the audience feels like part of the art (film or play)
I saw it in theaters with my dad when I was 10, it was amazing, it made me feel strange and uneasy to watch a kid going through all that.
25 years later I discovered he was Christian Bale, after watching several movies of him, THEN I discovered it was a Steven Spielberg movie LOL!
Was always destined to be a true “Hollywood” star
Such a great movie. Can’t believe I never see this on any top movie lists
the only all time list i found it on was (ironically enough) Empire Magazine.
It’s such a powerful and historic film. Christian Bale continues to carefully choose his roles and impacts our world with moving drama. I’m introducing it to my grandchildren.
Whenever I feel down or like I have it rough I like to watch this and then I remember the boys perseverance and faith he had during the entire film which inspires me to have the same outlook :)
David Argenal I agree, good comment
EXACTLY
yo'ure full of BS, you don't actually do that, you just made that up for attention. sad little man
Empire of the Sun... is truly a masterpiece 👍🏽👍🏽
Absolutely agree. Empire of the Sun is truly outstanding!! Bale was utterly brilliant in his role and everyone was perfectly cast. Truly superb!!
Yes,I could quite easily say this is my favourite movie of all time,I saw this movie when it was released and I was the same age as the boy bale is playing, the movie was played quite often, the way that its filmed is just perfect, the angles, the editing, the sound and the lighting, the acting like superb from everybody,it's probably the closes I've ever been to any war and its the most believable story of war from a child's point of view, where he is naive and young and wealthy and doesn't see the harsh reality outside his familys gates up until the end of the war where you can see how he had changed so much and aged so fast because of the stress he goes through adapting to survive, great movie
This is honestly one of Spielbergs best films. It has a kind of novel Micheal Ondaatje would have written which are about the relationship of Britain to its former colonies and the lives of people living during the last days of the British Empire. Its basically tells the story of the last days of the Brtiish Empire in asia. Spielberg clearly states although unstated in the movie and he is right in my opinion that the British Empire was brought to a hasty end in asia by the devastating Japanese military assualts of British held colonies in Asia and how that led to the upheaval and overnight their lives in these colonies being turned upside down by the Japanese military assaults who upto that time had the comfortable previledged existence of Brits who worked and lived in the service of the empire in far flung colonies of Britain in asia. Thats why there are so many white Brits alive today who were born in the 1930s and 1940s, 1950s being born in former British colonies rather than in England. This movie is also about a British boy born into that Empire no doubt would have lived comfortable previledged middle class life upto the point of the Japanese Invasion and losing his innocence experienceing WW2 at the hands of the Japanese occupation. This is one of Speilbergs best films and deosn't get the credit it deserves. It is about the end of an era and about the stories of people in them in this case a white middle class British boy played by Christian Bale. Terrific performance from Bale. A terrific film plays like a Micheal Ondaatje written Novel. Thats is mostly slow paced and thoroughly absorbing because its intelligent storyline.
Empire of the Sun is a great movie. Bale was super in the film. He was a good actor from a young age.
Greatest war time movie so far
I think this is Spielberg's best. And the fact that it draws on the greatest child acting performance I've ever seen puts it in my top 10. Also 10/10 cinematography and music. Wow
Spielberg saw talent in him that early? Haha fuckin legends both of them
I always remember myself in the early teenage, when my mind was filled with peace, when my life was enjoyable.
that final close up of him triumphantly screaming up at the sky..... a thing of beauty.
This film is brilliant and I mean BRILLIANT!
It’s 2022 and this is still my favorite movie of all time
No wonder he was mental in American Psycho with a childhood background like this.
I want to hear this over and over again. It touches my heart every time
When I see this movie, I always think of my great father fighting in the Chinese Army against the Japanese.
1:23 That's a Connecticut Air National Guard fighter! 118th Fighter Squadron, Flying Yankees!
Shed a tear when i first saw that scene. Our boys flied to unknown lands to free people from tyranny 🥲
This should’ve nominated Christian Bale for Best Actor, so that would make him the youngest actor to be nominated.
i can't stop watching this movie again and again. once a every year)
2019 this one here is a gem.
Saddest scene is at the end, when Jim waits to be seen and recovered by his parents after he has struggled alone for several years.
to a point his dad barely recognized him.
and to me, I realized I couldn't believe not seeing my mom in person longer than him even in the movie for once. I never thought this would happen to me
The song playing throughout is beautiful.
I watch this movie at the age of 9yrs old but now im 40 yrs of age best of the best movie

Imagine this movie on Imax or Dolby screens. Definitely underrated as was AI Artificial Intelligence. Add another John William's score which I think is a master and I just love it.
Aww i loved A.I
AI was brilliant
Story's based from war is always touching my heart
Great acting by Christian Bale, surprised he didnt get an Emmy for acting like a young boy.
He was a young boy, he was 13,
I don't know why this movie is so unknown... A little too long, but clearly one of the best from Spielberg !
A really great and underrated film by Steven Spielberg.
