Empire of the Sun is not Spielberg's most famous World War 2 era film but contains moments of true brilliance. Empire of the Sun stars a young Christian Bale and tells the story of an English boy surviving WW2 without the protection of his parents. Spielberg's film explores countless wartime themes, but in this analysis, I focus on the following question: What happens when you lose your ideal? After being separated from his father, Jamie imitates many different characters who offer a model for survival - only survival. This shift has a major impact on Jamie's development.
