Things to consider about watering. I'm from Indonesia, most Vanda species originate from Indonesia. In the peak of monsoon season we have rain almost everyday for at least 3 month, another 3 month off peak it rain but not very frequent, and the rest is dry season without any rain for 4-6 month. 90% of the rain here happen at afternoon, very rarely in the morning. And even in dry season, mist is frequently occurred in the forest and we will find the leaf is wet with dew in the morning. So many orchids hobbies here try to imitate what happened to the orchids in the forest by watering the orchids at afternoon or at night, including me. And I must say the results is much better especially if you grew your orchids outdoor and completely exposed to the element. But in a controlled environment like in a greenhouse, like so many orchids nursery here, most of them water in the morning, but it is mainly due to practicality.
Easiest explanation of vanda care I've ever heard. Why aren't all orchid care videos like this??! Went to your website and purchased some nice plants. 👌
I’ve learned more in this video then in anything I’ve seen online. This guy clearly knows how to grow happy vandas. I enjoyed the educational break down of things like why watering early in the day is vital, signs of a happy plant and much more.
I am an orchid newbie. I have been growing orchids (mostly dendrobiums, a couple phals, 1 oncidium, a few No ID's and my fave, Vanda Miss Joaquims) for almost two years now. I am from the Caribbean island of St Lucia where orchids are just starting to be recognised and cultivated. Although we have an orchid nursery, it leaves a lot to be desired!! I am in love with Vandas, but don't have any as yet - as they are very expensive (yes!!!) from the nursery. I have just discovered "Orchid Life" and have subscribed. I like the info regarding Vandas - makes sense to me!! Has made me love them even more, and I look forward to when I can buy/get at least two!! Kudos to you all ... love it!
This guy knows what he's saying, there is also some information which you can only learn from experience which is technical and prevention is also detailed , very detailed and practical. Straight to the point.
Thank you very much for your video. I'm looking forward for a video concerning people that live up north. I'm in Montréal, Québec, Canada and it's very cold in winter. I use an humidifier, a LED lamp, try to not kill my orchids but I have 3 in intensive care! Actually, my Vanda is doing good. Thanks 😊
O. M. G. Where the heck have you been? Why did I not find you before? Ugh. Let’s seed if I can take care of these babies and even try to restore some that fern to be on their last leg. Do you offer tours of your grow farm? Would love to stop by and see. I’m especially looking for fragrant orchids. I just love the truly organic look of the Vanda, like my life… wild and crazy!
Tony, I’m so glad to hear someone say use modern science. I don’t understand why people want to use what was used 100 years ago. Although some countries have banned much of what we have available. And there is the issue that some of these chemicals are highly toxic and cancer risk. You have to use your PPE and read directions. I find calling the manufacturer helpful - the number is on every bottle. There is also the issue of cost, many are very expensive. But if you want strong, non diseased, failing plants - you need to try and use the best available. Maybe share purchases with friends who have orchids or other garden plants. Though I had to laugh, I do use fresh, true cinnamon (ceylon/Saigon) as I had read a number of studies on the powder and oil. I like to use the powder on any cuts I make but it will desiccate roots you don’t need to dry up. I use a qtip to put it on cuts. I also delay repotting for a couple days if the plant had a issue after soaking in Physan20 as manufacturer recommends. I was so glad to hear you mention it. I really like Physan20. I use it for disinfecting the grow area, tools, pots, with the plants to clean and take care of any issues especially if lots of rain and cool. But I don’t hesitate to other fungicides if needed. Tony, why can’t you top that poor Vanda … if it has about 3 roots on the leaf portion, can’t you cut off the stem and old roots and restart it. I have seen some done that way and I have to assume it works or these professional retail growers wouldn’t do it. You don’t see that happening? I have a couple I was going to top because where it went for winter boarding in greenhouse didn’t water them enough and they look like palm trees. It seems happy but lost all those leaves. And then we had temps into the high 90s (heat in despot into 100s) with little humidity and that didn’t help. Though they all popped new roots and branching. I had kept them pretty healthy and happy for about 5 years and now a couple are palmy. You are so right about the high quality water and a lot of it. In the summer I water 2x, some times 3 in July/August. And I fertilize every spring/summer morning the sun is shining 25-30 ppm per day and up to 50 when they are active with lots of root tips. Do you think that is enough. I use a pure water mix 12/1/1 Klite because it’s 10% calcium, with all the trace minerals including a tiny bit of P and K. Once a month they get Better Grow at recommend dosage. I know everyone is so much on these MSU mixes but I believe and see my plants need phosphorus and potassium for good root development. I alternate the Better Grow bloom formula. And add chelated calcium with the Better Grow because they have little or none. I may be wrong but I see better root and the potassium seems to help better with heat. Like I say I use the 12/1/1 as a easy base to use on a regular basis without worrying about burning and making sure they get calcium which I think is so important along with magnesium. I spray it separately not in with the calcium. What are your thoughts.. am I just dreaming I need the extra P/K. My oncidiums are still more floppy though maybe that’s just their nature. The Vanda leaves I think could be used as a weapon.. All seem to be throwing up new shoots - maybe too many 😂 and blooming. They could use a little more sun - need to switch my shade cloth to 30-maybe 40. On a porch but get morning on one side and south /west the rest of the day til night. But have 50%.shade cloth. Higher in Summer, lower angle in fall. They go to the winter (greenhouse). Wonder if they get a bit more sun, all the new growths might be a bit stronger as some need to be staked to grow straight up. I don’t like staking but don’t want burned plants either.

Should I try to remove the brown old deaf pieces as well?
Great tips on growing! I might have unfortunately bought a sick/ dehydrated plant. Is there any way to save it if there are dead/ dried roots stuck in it's basket?
Just keep the humidity up around it, and try not to touch the plant while it recovers (a study showed plants that are handled more grow slower.) If it's humid enough the leaves can absorb enough water through osmosis even if it doesn't have any roots for you to water. Sometimes just putting your orchid in a bathroom windowsill is enough to raise the humidity and make them super happy. Oftentimes roots that look dead actually aren't, and, as I've learned through my own error, newbies tend to cut off roots that can still function. Leave those roots alone for now until it has lots of new root growth. (Seriously roots can have 'dead sections', but still be alive at the tip). Until it has enough roots to soak up water and nutrients, there are some different ways to keep the humidity around it very high: You can do this with a humidifier blowing around it (plenty of small cheap cold humidifiers out there. Essential oil infusers without the oil, just water, are cheap and work great placed near plants) Placing in a bathroom window as I said, OR stick it in a terrarium. To make an orchid ICU terrarium, just take a clear plastic or glass container placed near a window that provides the most sun in the morning. Put orchid and a dish of water inside. Change the water and disinfect bowl every few days until you have lots of new roots. You can soak the plants roots if you can see green roots after they get wet. I soak my pots and baskets once a week to every 3 weeks depending. It still needs air movement inside a terrarium to prevent mold though. I do this by making sure there's at least 3 quarter sized holes on opposite sides, and putting one of those mini PC gaming fans inside (they're like $20 on Amazon, quiet, and meant to be on for long periods of time.) My recovery terrarium is an old fish aquarium, and luckily it has holes in the top where the fish stuff, like bubbler and filter, used to go. I bought a box of cheap thermometer/hygrometers on Amazon, and stuck one in the tank. There's also a seedling mat underneath the tank which I turn on during the day (I use Seed Factor mats). Any orchid that needs some TLC goes in there. But this is a more permanent setup I decided was worth the money and effort because I wanted to expand my collection. (I recommend finding cheap or free used aquariums on Facebook marketplace for example.) I don't personally have much luck with plastic bags because most orchid leaves do not like water sitting on them, but I know some people do the Spag'n'bag method (put some moist spaghnum moss in one side of a bag, not touching the plant, plant on opposite side. Close and keep near light and warm until new roots form). I find bags collect condensation and drop it on leaves and roots, which rots them. That's why I prefer plastic and glass containers with fans, or just putting them in my bathroom. Orchids love bathroom windows! Good luck! Orchids are tough. I usually say they are grumpy introverted little parasites; they just need filtered light, humidity, and hate being touched. A touched orchid is a dead orchid.
So no on soaking your roots right? I live in Nsb,fl and I’m new to having vandas but I got 11 of them given to me… a couple had crown rot will I ever get leaves back on the crown rot ones? The roots still look healthy also I have a spike and a bulb but the bulb on the outside is turning brown why? And how can I save it to make it bloom ? I keep them in my greenhouse all day everyday I only spray the roots with rainwater only thanks
I love the information, but I will have to disagree with you about the water culture growing though. I have grown many orchids in water for years, as well as almost all aroids in water, and they do just the same if not better if done correctly. The fact that they arent "water plants" doesnt mean anything, because the plants adapt and shoot out "water roots" that drink when needed. Semi-hydroponic growing when done right actually take a lot of stress away from the plant and the person since the plant does the work itself to keep itself hydrated appropriately. I've grown 5 foot orchids in water, and 12 foot monstera in water, and numerous phiodendron and hoya, all with great results. Just because it's not something you're used to or don't know how to do, doesn't mean it not an option when done correctly and you degrade it. Outside that, this was a awesome video, thank you for the information
This is for Vandas and most orchids .... I can almost guarantee you have not grown a monster vanda in water culture , some of Tonys Vandas are over 200lbs of solid plant. do you have that going on with the Vandas you grow in water culture ????
@@orchidlife8224 Most of us live in apartments or houses, we don't have space nor other conditions to mimic FL greenhouse to accommodate such large plants. I would be absolutely perfectly fine with a small-sized Vanda that blooms occasionally for me. I don't really understand why do you feel you need to react so defensively to people's comments. I realized that I should've read the description before watching the video "how to provide these orchids with the right culture for success in growing monster size Vanda Orchids", because it's certainly not a video for hobbyists growing plants in their houses in various climates.
This is how ppl in Asia grew their Vanda. and westerners tried to flip it the other way round, and say their method is better. yup it is, those missing leaves and rotted roots did it for ya.
hey there, Tony is in Loxahatchee Florida. His company name is R&R Orchids the website is theVandaman.com . for fungicide ... Physan 20 gets the gold star along with Zerotol HC
I'm in the UK and can't get wire hangers like yours. What type/gauge of wire do I need to make my own? If I visit FL would I be able to buy a Vanda from you to bring home with me as it would need some documents. Maybe you have done this before?
if it is growing healthy and hasnt bloomed most of the time the problem is available light. Vandas like a lot of light, more so than phals and paphs. 60% shade and light through out the day is a good general practice if possible. look at the plant if it is a dark green instead of a lighter green than you may be in a bit too much shade for blooming but still perfect for healthy growth.
This guy is so obnoxious I can't even listen to him! There is more than one way to skin a cat and I can tell you from experience, I buy orchids online, I go to shows and buy orchids, I go to nurseries and buy orchids and I've even bought bag baby orchids from big box stores and I'm here to tell you, those bag babies are some of my most prolific and best growers! And some of them have turned out to be quite rare believe it or not! This is the kind of person that thinks their way is the only way but again, I know from experience, you can grow orchids many different ways just like you can grow vandas many different ways, and I've been growing vandas in pots and hanging up and dunking them in water for years and it works just fine. I ever met a guy like this in a nursery I would turn around and walk out.
seems like you have a lot of time on your hands , the vandas we grow I wouldnt be able to dunk in a 60 gal garbage can ... id say thats pretty good , thank you for your comments albeit negative AF - Cheers
Definitely agree with you! People grow vandas in different climates! Those orchids will adapt to our growing methods! This guy is arrogant and ignorant prick
Don’t you also need to make sure it’s meant for the water you are using. It’s my understanding from manufacturer some are for pure water only and is buffered to work so the plant can uptake all the nutrients across the range. And then there are fertilizers which can be used in tap or well water that already has calcium, magnesium in it. And to get your water tested to determine what you got or you can end up with your fertilizer being too acidic below the 5.5-6.5 range. Or just use pure water with proper fertilizer for that type of water along with secondary minerals (calcium, magnesium) and the trace minerals. That’s my understanding, do you agree.
Help!, I live in NJ, Due to squirrels in my area ,I have to keep my vandas inside. They are small vandas. They get water every day. I am using Dyna Gro now and I am diluting it in a large spray bottle each weekend. I want bigger ones. What is the best way to help them bloom?
the way to the bloom is through the light, if they are not getting enough light they wont bloom. Research the parents of the plant to see where they originate from. some orchid species up north get 16+ hours of sun naturally during the summer and much less at winter , while species that grow closer to the equator stay near 12/12 almost constantly. try to mimic their natural growing environment to the best of your ability and give them as much light as you can without burning them . good luck !
Hi I’m based in London , uk , just got it my beautiful Vanda orchid. , how to water ???? I’m spraying twice a day with still water from the shop, do I really can’t put to the bouquet for half hour ?
Question: How do I save my vanda after finding out that ducking it in water was bad. Many roots are broken. What can I do? Will the vanda plant get better when I begin to water it with a hose in the morning and giving it filtered sun??? Please help!
I also wanted to add that there is a big root coming out of the side of the plant but it’s try and broken from the top of the root to the middle of the root and from the middle of the root to the end of the root looks normal. Should I cut it off? That’s also another questions. Should I or can I cut off bad roots or will it kill my vanda ?
Much respect for the incredible valuable I formation I. Your videos. You are helping me greatly. I appreciate it. Ty & happy growing. Do you know where we can get dynagrow in south Florida?
what is your feeding schedule? also what is the color of the leaves? if the leaves are a very dark green it is a sign of low light levels and the plant may need more to bloom. Vandas like a lot water and light to do their thing.
wood rots then the roots start taking in the bacteria from the rotted wood , then you kill your plant... sure the world will be better with less plastic but just cause you take it off the plant doesnt mean it disappears . it will just end up some where else. All you are doing by removing it is damaging roots which will harm the plant.... if you grow them right the roots will cover the entire basket in a a few years
i use dyna gro all the time with great Results ... Antonio mixes everything by scratch which involves a lot of understanding of what micro and macro nutrients do what, for those of us without the working knowledge Antonio has its easier and more beneficial to use Dyngro products because of their quality and use of micro and macro nutrients already in the product
Hi there. Thank you for all information. I purchased the dyna grow bloom on vanda man recommendation. Iam using a 16 oz chapin hose end sprayer do I need to dilute it or just use it at full strength. Thank you
@@orchidlife8224 thank you for the reply. But what Iam confused is when you are using your ortho hose end sprayer do u pour dyna grow directly into sprayer or do u dilute it first. Then set sprayer to 1tsp. Thank you again
the hose sprayer should be the device you use to set the dillution rate ( in this case 1 teaspoon per gallon) .... I use the Ortho Dial and Spray... place the concentrate directly into the container and dial the dispersion rate to 1teaspoon per gallon. Full concentrate in the dial-n-spray or Chameleon , then set your sprayer to 1 teaspoon per gallon, check to make sure you have the right setting ;-)

Tony is the absolute worst person in the orchid industry by far. His greenhouses mimic Asia where he imports them from. Soon as his vandas go to real Florida weather they do crap for months to a year before doing better. He’s also a nasty and vulgar person who screws over customers
my mother used to tell me if I didnt have anything nice to say than dont say anything. your homework is to focus more on trying to be a positive person on this earth :-)
@@orchidlife8224The proof is in the pudding! I found this video a year ago and headed straight to his group. I’ve had tremendous success with my vandas ever since. I envy the folks in Florida building greenhouses and pergolas to house the amazing plants they have following his advice. He’s real, knowledgeable and 5K people in that group know he’s gold.
The information presented is good - and valuable. But, why is Tony present as SO annoyed to have to talk about this? If I went into a nursery to talk and learn about orchis and got his tone, I'd turn around and walk out. Not even enjoying the video because it seems like I have to sort through his rants to get the information. The video could have been half the length, with the same amount of value information.

I have my first Vanda. I water it by laying the roots in my pond for about 20 minutes, not bending the roots. Is this okay? It seems to be thriving.
I realized that I should've read the description before watching the video "how to provide these orchids with the right culture for success in growing monster size Vanda Orchids", because it's certainly not a video for hobbyists growing plants in their houses in various climates.
you would need a 75 gallon drum to use water culture on a mature vanda
This is how ppl in Asia grew their Vanda. and westerners tried to flip it the other way round, and say their method is better. yup it is, those missing leaves and rotted roots did it for ya.
What is your address to go buy the vandas? And what is the fungal combo that you recommend?
hey there, Tony is in Loxahatchee Florida.
Great show! Where are you located in W Palm Beach?
I planted the Vanda orchid a few years ago, now it's big and very fertile, but why hasn't it flowered yet?
if it is growing healthy and hasnt bloomed most of the time the problem is available light. Vandas like a lot of light, more so than phals and paphs. 60% shade and light through out the day is a good general practice if possible. look at the plant if it is a dark green instead of a lighter green than you may be in a bit too much shade for blooming but still perfect for healthy growth.
Please add subtittle Sir 😁
Please do another video soon for us who are up North and who are also growing vandas in the house
What is the best temperature for vanda? It's 32 celcius in here
Don’t you also need to make sure it’s meant for the water you are using.
Can we water them in the shower daily?
I’m spraying twice a day with still water from the shop, do I really can’t put to the bouquet for half hour ?
water til runoff then water again 10 min later , do it early in the morning so the plant has time to dry befor the cool night temps
Do you know where we can get dynagrow in south Florida?
you can find it at a few locations but I have the links in the description . you can click right on them and order from amazon if you wish
I’ve had my Vanda for 3 years. It’s growing lots of leaves but no spikes. What can I do? It’s hanging in my lanai.
what is your feeding schedule? also what is the color of the leaves? if the leaves are a very dark green it is a sign of low light levels and the plant may need more to bloom. Vandas like a lot water and light to do their thing.
Yes, I want to remove the basket. I hate plastic. Why can't they use wood or something that can decompose?
wood rots then the roots start taking in the bacteria from the rotted wood , then you kill your plant... sure the world will be better with less plastic but just cause you take it off the plant doesnt mean it disappears . it will just end up some where else. All you are doing by removing it is damaging roots which will harm the plant.... if you grow them right the roots will cover the entire basket in a a few years
God what a shouter!
Dynagro. You don’t use it But I should. 👍🏻
i use dyna gro all the time with great Results ... Antonio mixes everything by scratch which involves a lot of understanding of what micro and macro nutrients do what, for those of us without the working knowledge Antonio has its easier and more beneficial to use Dyngro products because of their quality and use of micro and macro nutrients already in the product
But how do you really feel!
feeling good Reef Club !!

Hi there. Thank you for all information. I purchased the dyna grow bloom on vanda man recommendation. Iam using a 16 oz chapin hose end sprayer do I need to dilute it or just use it at full strength. Thank you
set the mix to 1 teaspoon per gallon ... more than that and you run the risk of burning your plants
@@orchidlife8224 perfect thank you very much. Hopefully my orchids start to rebound and look somewhat like yours. If vanda man sees my unhappy orchids he would throw all of them away 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😭😭😭 definitely not because of lack of care. Looking forward to seeing your informative videos.

Hi. I live in fort Lauderdale how I can find your address ? Thank you

Can I put it under the shower?
