You've learned lesson number one about hiring contractors - never pay all of the cost up front! Another lesson is, for bigger jobs, get a contract, and make sure EVERYTHING you want is on it. If the contractor balks at doing this, it's a tip off about how they do business - don't hire them. I know it's a pain to do all the searching, but for me, it's a lot less stressful than dealing with them after the job is done. When you find good tradesmen, great. But one trick to finding good tradesmen is to ask all your friends, neighbors and family who they've used and about the experiences they've had with them. After 10 years in this area, I've finally found most of the tradesmen I need, and they're all good. I often have to wait longer than I'd like, but I've learned that's far preferable to trying to make them do something they never thought of doing. That's the cause of all poor experiences I've had - I have one standard in mind, but never communicated that to them completely, and they have another standard and never communicate that to me. Add being a woman to that, and it's doubly difficult. Good luck!
You’re honestly one of the few people that I feel enjoys vlogging. And I appreciate that. I know its work but you just are who you are in your videos. And Alex is walking around doing his thing and it’s the best. Not so put together. ❤

Maddie, I totally agree with you on your approach about renovating the house. Do as much as you can yourself, save the money, avoid disappointment and be proud of what you have achieved 😊
Your so right about the showroom style houses, that's why i don't watch them anymore, your far more relatable. I have quite a large shed which I've setup so I have storage for my food waste, recycling, plastic to go to the supermarket, even clothes ie., holey or worn out clothing I would never put in landfill but recycle that too in the supermarket car park textile banks. Loving your vlogs! ❤
Good to see you feeling more positive. I always find listening to a podcast whilst doing something helps. I often put my earphones on and listen to one whilst cooking. Have a great week ❤
It's nice to see other people with rooms that are dumping grounds. I live in a one bed house but I find that overwhelming still. I have little piles of clutter around for some reason. It gets me down but maybe one day I'll get it done x
I have watched your home renovation journey and I’ve absolutely fallen in love with the way your home has turned. Love your interior design and decors. Especially your gardens. I would love to see more videos of your area from clear far shots and front and back of the house as well in more far clear shots because I love countryside living. ❤️✨
another freezer tip: you can make rice and then wrap it in individual servings and throw it in the freezer. then you always have rice and its quick to reheat and reheats well in the microwave or stovetop.
I maintain a pretty tidy and organized home with very limited clutter about as it stresses me out but I definitely make sure to recycle or reuse anything I can. Now the garage on the other hand 😄 that's where the separate recycle bins, holiday etc are and it's definitely not as tidy as it can be.
Hi Maddie, I very much relate to wanting to be non-confrontational with the carpenters. We had really awful ones as well. Eventually, we said goodbye to them and went looking for new people for our next renovation. We now have the best guys! They are doing a fantastic job AND are super easy and accepting in their communicate. Sometimes it takes a while to find good people and builders. Don't invite the people back who are horrible; look for new people. I'm now so happy with ours; I will hold on to them for the rest of our lives! ahah.
5 minute journaling is such a good idea! I want to journal & it helps me, but I tend to go for a long time, & that puts me off to doing it very often when I don't have much free time.
I really like your utility room, it suits the house and doesn’t look like all the other “predictable Instagram pretty shots”, it’s much more authentic and sustainable! With regards to trades, if you really like your builders, ask them for recommendations to other trades or simply ask your neighbours if they have any people they would recommend.
Very inspiring Video Maddie . I’ve taken a lot from your comments here , very much looking forward to trying the cabbage salad too . I’m thinking of adding some nuts for a bit of crunch . You are very talented in the way you present your life , an Australian follower !
We are in year 10 of renovating our house. We can to the decision that we were not living our lives, so now we do a little here and there. No outside trades. When we do work on something, we just try to do it ourselves and it has worked out so far. I really released a lot of pent up stress when we stopped pushing so hard.
Interesting point about writing pages and pages in a journal... wallowing in our problems. I recently listened to a podcast that spoke of this. Even going to therapy and continually focusing on the problems is not a healthy thing to do!
ahhh i love the lucy and yak alexa trousers. i got some as a comfy trousers option after surgery and then wore them so much that i needed another pair hahaha
You can definitely do the dressing room. I don’t know if they sell it in the UK but zinsser paint primer works for ikea furniture! And if you get a day bed with a pop up trundle you can turn it into a large bed for guests.
Great video as always! I might be being blind but I can’t see the link you said you’d share for the 5 minute journal you use. I journal every day in different ways and like the idea of adding the 5 min journal mornings and evenings :)
Couple years ago when I watched someone with clean , organized house I was mad at myself that my home don't look like that. Now I know better and when I see someone with clean house I just don't watch it because I like real people and real life. It's good for my brain to see others have the same like me 😊
Hi Maddy try Magneium salf flakes in your bath for muscle aches and magnesium spray too....also a good body oil before bed should help with sleeping well..
I bought the Lucy & Yak cords in navy, v V comfortable, would def recommend, and am thinking of buying another pair in another colour. I know your utility room hasn't been decorated but I like it, I'd leave it, I think it looks great! Thanks for another interesting and helpful vlog. PS made your 'unsausage rolls' over the wkend, will def make them again!
Great to see you feeling more motivated Maddie! Interesting to hear about the Purdy and Fig products as I'm considering giving those a try. Just to say regarding tradesmen - not all tradesmen are the same. My husband has been a carpenter/buider for over 20 years and we would not survive financially if we were not paid until the job was complete. We invoice each fortnight for the work completed. I think perhaps its more about making sure you see the work of the tradesmen and any sub-contractors they may use before you engage them and get some recommendations that you can trust before going ahead.
Lovely video! Yes I have listened to Imogen Heap over the years. I loved Poor things, amazing set designs! Could your dressing room double as a laundry drying room?
Maddie, could you have some perennial veg/herb beds so it's less work every year? Have just laid weed membrane in our allotment. It will make such a difference, just make sure it is permeable ❤x
Maddie! If you're not going to be filling all the veg beds this year, I don't see why you couldn't put cardboard on those other beds now? It'll help with the weed pressure, anyway! Another option is landscape fabric, but that's often made of plastic. It is fairly durable though, so it could help for a longer period of time. I love watching your videos, thank you for sharing so much of your life with us!
@@MadeleineOlivia also just wanted you to say I really love watching your vlogs, I’ve only recently come across your channel actually. Yum, that orzo and courgette at the end. Loved the video and such a shame about the contractors, but it is like that here too. So much so we almost cry when we finally find someone that does the job right---otherwise, somethings we have to wait, just like you, or do ourselves via YT videos lol. I'm glad it stopped raining for you for a bit. :)
Have been loving these vlogs so much! I just look at them while I work on my jewelry and hear you chatting etc. I have to ask, what is that bush blooming outside the utility window? I was like - already?! We have only the snowdrops that came out a couple of days ago :D.
I would steer clear of cardigans as they do not flatter you and stick to more fitted jumpers. So good to see you in something fitted and chocolate colour would suit you too.
Leave a public Google review for that door ! I'm not sure if you have a BBB over in Cornwall, but if not at least leave a review for that door. Warns others about the crumby company you had to deal with.❤ Hopefully you can find another outfit who can repair it. Have a great day!!!
Hey Maddie you should check out the Veg in One Bed book by Huw Richard’s for some inspo on what’s possible if you used just a couple of the raised beds and kept things more manageable while you’re learning 👩🏻🌾🥕🥦🌽
Maddie did you end up finding leggings that fit? I can highly recommend a UK brand called Ruby Fury - they custom make the leggings, in England, to your specifications and they're really affordable as well :) x
I think red or rust would be best but do your own research as to what would go best on the material of your cardigan. Sometimes they look quite different due to varying absorption rates.
If you cut that clematis back really severely and just leave about a meter of the main stems, that will give it the best chance to survive a transplant. The time to do it is late winter while it's still dormant, so sooner than later, or else wait until next winter to move it if you can.
