I am a 1979 lady who discovered Drift Phonk only recently and instantly fell in love. Today I finally learned why so vastly different tracks come up when I search for Phonk. I have never been into rap but this seems to be my entry point. I absolutely love the sound of the original Phonk. Makes me nostalgic (as it should). So there might possibly be a positive aspect to all of that, too...
As a drifter, I felt as if drift phobk captured the element of drift. For drifting, you need to be quick on your decisions, whether it be clutch kicking, brakes, etc. Else you're gona end up in a ditch on the touge or slamming into the other cars, though if you're precise with it, the smoothness is highly visible and felt. Seeing these tiktok kids putting the tracks that I resonated with truly put a hole in my taste for the songs i felt i connected with on a different scale with their terrible Patrick Bateman edits.

I started listening to Phonk with da Raider Klan and it's sad how the genre changed to the point of becoming cringe, many ppl in the og phonk community don't consider ''Drift Phonk'' to be real Phonk, bc it's a very different sound and easy to make. SpaceGhostPurrp, Chris Travis, Denzel Curry, Lil Ugly Mane, Dj Smokey, Soudiere, Roland Jones, Mr Sisco, MC Holocaust, Baker, Cursed, $uicideboy$, Ramirez and others if they have really done Phonk, Tiktok Phonk is trash and always will be.
Easy to make? Try to make a drift phonk track that actually sounds good. 99% of the drift phonk out there is amateurish garbage. It's part of the issue that he didn't mention. Don't bother looking for tutorials, not a single one shows a remotely decent bass in it.
dejavu, this is just like the pre 2010'ish Dubstep coming from the UK, then it went international - brostep got popular but it was still called dubstep and sounded nothing like the original deep heavy yet-calmer dubstep from the UK.
Because brostep doesn't exist. Dubstep has always been dubstep and still is dubstep. Now we have dubstep and old school dubstep. This is just the natural evolution of the genre. "Brostep" is just a derogatory term for people who hate the "new dubstep" (2010 and beyond), and those who hate dubstep entirely. This is how every genre has evolved. People used to call the evolution of hardstyle "nustyle". But it was just hardstyle, just different from old school hardstyle, instead just being its natural evolution. Nustyle was nothing more than supposed to be a derogatory term for "not oldschool hardstyle". Same thing with "brostep". Because Skrillex was the first one to popularize it, people tried to define Skrillex's style as a genre, instead of a style. Which is just a slightly more aggressive brand of dubstep. Which today would be the average dubstep. Although Riddim is a different beast and an actual genre, we still have dubstep aswell. And maybe this is what will happen to phonk.
as soon as something gets popular people start hating on it lol, these people think theyre going against the grain but they're actually the most cookie cutter people imaginable because their opinions are always "popular thing bad"
Mixing Drift Phonk with other genres of music can actually be fun as hell, EDM and DF can blend super well together if you can mix a cowbell and saw chords correctly
Agreed, I've seen some artists combine it with drum and bass or metal and it sounds awesome. I think this sort of experimentation is what's gonna help the genre evolve imo

Good video, just be careful with the name "Drift Phonk," because "sigma male" Phonk is usually slowed down House Phonk rather than Drift Phonk. But this just shows how much tiktok destroyed the genre even more lmao
they are all the same genre but its so copy and pasted that when the producer uses a slightly different drum pattern or tempo its automatically its new "sub genre"
Apparently Drift Phonk was really just a genre that came from the original Phonk genre which in turn was just a slower form of hip hop. Yet somehow it got turned into people actually using it to make it a way to spread hate towards people they don't like.

drift phonk has a lot mercenary producers that repeat the same formula every fucking time, with phonk house or other drift phonk anomaly... every time I hear the sames cowbells and THE SAME OPEN HAT AND CHIME XDDDD (also the sigmas virgins destroyed it too). Nice video dude.

I honestly don't even get why it's called drift phonk when it's not even similar to what actual phonk is. Phonk is supposed to be trap beats with samples and memphis rap vocals but the only thing drift "phonk" has in common with phonk is the use of memphis vocals

I mainly love phonk when used for rdr2 or twdg edits on UA-cam shorts. Mainly used for battle edits or sad ones. I genuinely like these types of videos.

Something you said that resonated with me was that drift phonk is now embarrassing to be caught listening to; I discovered it on Spotify in middle school after seeing that megamind meme with Close Eyes and felt that way about it from the beginning lol, but especially so now i don’t want to be necessarily associated with it because of the sigma edits you talked abt
I can say that am an avid listener of both drift phonk and Memphis inspired songs, and they really do capture the essence of cars and the trenches. But, the more modern and popularized stuff by the "sigma kids" really does put a bad name on it. It doesn't sound good and I really think the more original drift phonk sound is better than Metamorphosis and Kordhell's tracks. The more underground the phonk artist is, the better (but sometimes very repetitive) the sound. Overall, I do think most of modern culture has ruined it since Memphis phonk has some amazing vibes and sound, unlike the fast and popular stuff today.
We should BE HAPPY that 12-13 year olds embrace the older Memphis rap. Yes, most of the way they embrace it is cringe. But at least they EMBRACE it instead of disappearing year by year by the time us older heads fade away

Drift Phonk isn't as misleading as it is nowadays. Long story short, Drift phonk is more likely inspired by Horrorcore (a subgenre of Memphis Rap a.k.a Phonk) on which is using Cowbell as their creepy melodies. It is a faster, aggresive than Horrorcore but it still keeps the Phonk rudemental. The problem people hated started on House Phonk a.k.a Drift House (the EDM House variant) on which IS the one associated with Sigma culture which we saw today. Brazilian Phonk?? IDK Where that come from but for sure it wasn't from Brazil unlike its OG Baile Funk. Plus: Drift Phonk were waaaaay long dead around 2021 so do not assosiate Drift Phonk with House Phonk.

I think that on the point of instrumentation, you are entirely correct about its clearcut definitions, but as someone whos heavily into drift phonk i have discovered since its so specific and it has such a clean and cut musical language, it is actually more similar to rock because you don't need all the elements to feel like phonk. does pretty much all the popular stuff use the same instrumentation and same sound font? yeah mostly, but you can get into stuff that although still within the electronic sphere usually, uses the same language with completely different instrumentation, the entirety of staysold's work being an example of that since the only thing he uses thats similar is the distorted electronic kicks, the rest of his instrumentation is almost entirely heavily distorted orchestral instruments twisted into being barely recognizable, but listening to it it is still distinctly phonk although in a vein of aggression most similar to thinks like asterix by yatashi gang. satisfaction by xelishurt is also similar, using a hardcore techno instrumentation while still using the musical language of drift phonk. all of which to say, as much as it is unfairly covering og phonk as a genre, it's also its own musical genre that does not have to be as one note as it is often considered. I mean, even within the one note conception you cannot listen to close eyes by dvrst, and demons around by yatashigang and tell me that these two songs sound like the same song(even if same song syndrome heavily purveys this genre, obviously) even though being very obviously the same genre. None of your points are wrong, but neglecting to mention that these conceptions, although yes very common, may not be entirely representative of everything in the genre, is unfortunate from my view, would've been a good chance to expand the view of this subgenre for those watching this video learn about it
Thought I would comment and just give my two cents. Phonk is a fairly new genre to me, only started listening to it a few weeks ago. I am a pretty big fan of drift phonk, and I gotta say it is a very easy genre of music to make, but it's a bit more difficult to make a Drift Phonk track that doesnt sound the same as every other drift phonk track. (I've been experimenting with making drift phonk and I have yet to make a drift phonk song that i feel is actually good and doesn't sound generic). I'm not a fan of how the other subgenres of phonk are overshadowed by drift phonk. I love Jungle Phonk and atmospheric phonk, but based on what I've seen online most people only know drift phonk and not the other subgenres. Drift/Hose Phonk is pretty good music to workout to. I don't have TikTok, so maybe thats why i don't hate drift phonk as much as other people haha.
Love the video just wish you talked about drift phonks listeners in the drift scene and not just cringy 12 year old gives it a worst wrap then it needs other then that 8/10 will watch your other videos
Commentary yt-ers keep missing the mark slightly. The issue isnt the idea of drift phonk but the fact that spotify forgot to add drift, ok honest mistake. But the main issue is that its mostly brazilian phonk nowadays wich in my opinion is the worst thing because its a complete mutation from the phonk i started listening to in 2022
I listen to drift Phonk a lot, and I appreciate the way that you addressed the cringe kids. I understand the point about it being easy to create and it is easy to create. Overall, if one likes the genre, they should not be dubbed cringe because of the audiences reputation.

The less well known phonk genres eg memphis, raw, dirt, ambience are the best but these days people only know drift, brazillian (brazillian aint even phonk) and all the edit phonk

The problem with comparing drfit phonk to rock is rock encompasses many subgenres and drift phonk is a subgenre of a subgenre (phonk) of a subgenre (memphis rap) of a subgenre (gangsta rap) of a subgenre (hip-hop). Of course a really specific subgenre is going to all sound very similar, just like all powerviolence (a subgenre of hardcore punk, which is a subgenre of punk, which is a subgenre of garage rock, which is a subgenre of rock). Also, calling people that are part of the "sigma male" community NPCs is ridiculous because it's mostly ironic hyperbole mixed with some genuine right-wing beliefs.
I used to listen to phonk religiously, it is my go to gym-hype music. But then, when cringey edits came from tiktoks, instagram, YT shorts etc. It became like an over saturated. Eventually, I hope it will, because I find it tiring nowadays, it is the same as dubstep. It is just trendy hype music, that is all. It will die out, hopefully, seeing those brainrot “sigma, football troll face, gymcel, looksmaxxing, and just overall just shitty edits.” It makes me want to explode my brain from the cringe, literally.

But, the more modern and popularized stuff by the "sigma kids" really does put a bad name on it. It doesn't sound good and I really think the more original drift phonk sound is better than Metamorphosis and Kordhell's tracks. The more underground the phonk artist is, the better (but sometimes very repetitive) the sound. Overall, I do think most of modern culture has ruined it since Memphis phonk has some amazing vibes and sound, unlike the fast and popular stuff today.
We should BE HAPPY that 12-13 year olds embrace the older Memphis rap. Yes, most of the way they embrace it is cringe. But at least they EMBRACE it instead of disappearing year by year by the time us older heads fade away

Drift Phonk isn't as misleading as it is nowadays. Long story short, Drift phonk is more likely inspired by Horrorcore (a subgenre of Memphis Rap a.k.a Phonk) on which is using Cowbell as their creepy melodies. It is a faster, aggresive than Horrorcore but it still keeps the Phonk rudemental. The problem people hated started on House Phonk a.k.a Drift House (the EDM House variant) on which IS the one associated with Sigma culture which we saw today. Brazilian Phonk?? IDK Where that come from but for sure it wasn't from Brazil unlike its OG Baile Funk.
Plus: Drift Phonk were waaaaay long dead around 2021 so do not assosiate Drift Phonk with House Phonk.
And drift phonk wasn't really the main phonk genre that blew up. In fact it's only North Memphis by Pharmacist that's the biggest. It's drift house.

I think that on the point of instrumentation, you are entirely correct about its clearcut definitions, but as someone whos heavily into drift phonk i have discovered since its so specific and it has such a clean and cut musical language, it is actually more similar to rock because you don't need all the elements to feel like phonk. does pretty much all the popular stuff use the same instrumentation and same sound font? yeah mostly, but you can get into stuff that although still within the electronic sphere usually, uses the same language with completely different instrumentation, the entirety of staysold's work being an example of that since the only thing he uses thats similar is the distorted electronic kicks, the rest of his instrumentation is almost entirely heavily distorted orchestral instruments twisted into being barely recognizable, but listening to it it is still distinctly phonk although in a vein of aggression most similar to thinks like asterix by yatashi gang. satisfaction by xelishurt is also similar, using a hardcore techno instrumentation while still using the musical language of drift phonk. all of which to say, as much as it is unfairly covering og phonk as a genre, it's also its own musical genre that does not have to be as one note as it is often considered. I mean, even within the one note conception you cannot listen to close eyes by dvrst, and demons around by yatashigang and tell me that these two songs sound like the same song(even if same song syndrome heavily purveys this genre, obviously) even though being very obviously the same genre.
None of your points are wrong, but neglecting to mention that these conceptions, although yes very common, may not be entirely representative of everything in the genre, is unfortunate from my view, would've been a good chance to expand the view of this subgenre for those watching this video learn about it

Thought I would comment and just give my two cents. Phonk is a fairly new genre to me, only started listening to it a few weeks ago. I am a pretty big fan of drift phonk, and I gotta say it is a very easy genre of music to make, but it's a bit more difficult to make a Drift Phonk track that doesnt sound the same as every other drift phonk track. (I've been experimenting with making drift phonk and I have yet to make a drift phonk song that i feel is actually good and doesn't sound generic). I'm not a fan of how the other subgenres of phonk are overshadowed by drift phonk. I love Jungle Phonk and atmospheric phonk, but based on what I've seen online most people only know drift phonk and not the other subgenres. Drift/Hose Phonk is pretty good music to workout to. I don't have TikTok, so maybe thats why i don't hate drift phonk as much as other people haha.
Love the video just wish you talked about drift phonks listeners in the drift scene and not just cringy 12 year old gives it a worst wrap then it needs other then that 8/10 will watch your other videos

But the main issue is that its mostly brazilian phonk nowadays wich in my opinion is the worst thing because its a complete mutation from the phonk i started listening to in 2022
I listen to drift Phonk a lot, and I appreciate the way that you addressed the cringe kids. I understand the point about it being easy to create and it is easy to create. Overall, if one likes the genre, they should not be dubbed cringe because of the audiences reputation.

The problem with comparing drfit phonk to rock is rock encompasses many subgenres and drift phonk is a subgenre of a subgenre (phonk) of a subgenre (memphis rap) of a subgenre (gangsta rap) of a subgenre (hip-hop). Of course a really specific subgenre is going to all sound very similar, just like all powerviolence (a subgenre of hardcore punk, which is a subgenre of punk, which is a subgenre of garage rock, which is a subgenre of rock).
Also, calling people that are part of the "sigma male" community NPCs is ridiculous because it's mostly ironic hyperbole mixed with some genuine right-wing beliefs.

I used to listen to phonk religiously, it is my go to gym-hype music. But then, when cringey edits came from tiktoks, instagram, YT shorts etc. It became like an over saturated. Eventually, I hope it will, because I find it tiring nowadays, it is the same as dubstep. It is just trendy hype music, that is all.
