CLIP DESCRIPTION:
M'Lynn (Sally Field) grieves for her daughter, and when she expresses a desire to hit something, Clairee (Olympia Dukakis) suggests slapping Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The title refers to those seemingly frail Southern belles who survive any and all deprivations through whims of iron. Robert Harling's original stage play was set exclusively in a Louisiana beauty parlor where an all-female cast of characters laughed, cried and compared menfolk. The film expands the playing field by including scenes at picnics, hospitals and the like, and by visually depicting the males who never appeared in the stage version. Dolly Parton plays the goodnatured beauty-shop owner, while Shirley MacLaine is the cantankerous town eccentric, decked out in grungy overalls and speaking fluent Trash. Well-to-do Sally Field bravely endures several assaults to her sensibilities, not the least of which is the illness (and subsequent death) of daughter Julia Roberts. The performances are first-rate, with the possible exception of Daryl Hannah's overemphatic portrayal of a gawky hairdresser. The film stumbles a bit in its depiction of the male characters as fools and deadheads, and in the final overlong hospital scenes involving the comatose Roberts, which play like a road company version of Terms of Endearment. Otherwise, Steel Magnolias is a prime example of ensemble filmmaking, lovingly coordinated by director Herbert Ross. (Sidebar: Herbert Ross was reportedly rather rough on Julia Roberts, deriding her lack of experience. The rest of the female cast rallied around Roberts and told the director to lay off or pay the price).

I lost my daughter. She was 29years old and so beautiful and sweet. Sally Field acting in this part nailed it. She portrayed a grieving mother very well. Makes me cry every time I see it. Hits home. She did fantastic job. 🌹
So sorry for your loss. ❤
Sorry for your loss, stay strong 🤍
I'm sorry about your daughter. Take care of yourself. God bless you.
What happened?
So sorry for your loss. Praying for you 🙏. 💜🕯
This has got to be one of her best performances of all time. The way she bounces from crying to panicking to denial is so raw to watch. I feel my heart hurting right along with her. “I don’t think I can do this” is something anyone who’s lost a loved one can understand. There are days, moments, months or years where it feels like you can’t keep going.
Sally Field is really good at suddenly transitioning from crying to angry, doing both really well in this scene.
She did it in Sybil in 1976.
She does it in a lot of movies.
She also does a variation on it in Mrs. Doubfire. "The whole time? I can't believe this--THE WHOLE TIME!?"
What did Shelby die from
@@terrionwright356 she had Type 1 Diabetes. Her mother donated a kidney but her body rejected it and she died from complications.
This is why Sally Field is a legend. Master Class in acting right here. ❤️
Absolutely love this movie!! Brings me 2 tears everytime!! This scene Litterally came true for me. I lost my beloved son at 22 years and 2 days old. Travis passed from acute asphyxiation under a car. I want to know why, why, why!!! I too need a weezer to punch!!! So much anger, devastation, loneliness, sorrow, gut wrenching ❤ break. Its just a nightmare I never wake up from!! People tend to run away after the funeral and expect you to "get over it". So 2 all the people who have lost your beloved, hugs 2 u and just know u r not alone!!!
Hope you're doing well, sending lots of positive vibes ❤❤❤
Probably one of the best scenes in cinema history. The way it takes you from crying with M'lynne to feeling her anger and despair to straight into laughing is incredible. Masterclass material.
Go head My'Lynn, slap her!!! Are you high Clairee?
I love this movie. #Classic
kimyada Taylor that scene made me cry so bad...
Sally captured broken hearted mother over the loss of her child!💝
This was the saddest scene in the movie, one that all mothers who’ve lost a child can relate to. And it also was the funniest scene in the movie. I want a t-shirt that says “I slapped Ouiser Boudreaux.”
Powerful actress. The way she shifts through complete polar states of emotions in seconds is something rare to witness on the silver screen.
this whole scene is perfection...
EMT Girl the movie is trash and so is this scene
I wonder how many times this scene was done. I imagine not too many times because the emotions seem so real.
Jack Jr. slapped Ouiser now he can wear a shirt saying he slapped Ouiser 😂
Sally field is the most dramatic actress ever ... She fit this role perfectly
Sally Field is so petite and yet massively powerfyl in expressing her emotions. It's been more than 30 years but this scene alone is just a masterpiece.
RIP Olympia Dukakis. Your luminous presence and incredible talent will be missed.
I lost my dad April 2016 just before his 65th birthday. He had managed to live 25 years with Crohn’s Disease and we had no warning of how sick he was until the day before he died. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s myself later in 2016 and had to face surgery and living with the disease without my dad who had always been my rock. Even with the passage of time I still have moments where this scene aptly describes every emotion I feel over losing my father. ❤️
My Mom used to say that Sally's character portrays what a person goes through after they have lost a loved one. After losing both my Mom and Dad, I can say that she was right. It is like being on a roller-coaster from Hell. One second you're doing well and the next second you're balling your eyes out!
Sally Field is such a powerhouse. This scene could have jumped the shark into sappy overacting, but Sally pulls back at just the right moment.
Sally Field was brilliant in this scene and role--she portrayed the emotion of grief and frustration so well here. I think it is one of my favourite scenes in cinema and I think Sally deserved an Oscar for this scene alone (kind of like Ingrid Bergman in Murder On The Orient Express, in which, she won her Oscar for the one scene alone!). I also love the scenery of this film as well and the Easter Egg Hunt Park at the end is beautiful too. I also think the cast was wonderful too. Though, I wish Susan Sarandon was in it, as I can picture her in this film! But it is one of the best films I think out there--such a feel-good soul film and womanly bond film.
Dolly Parton was my favorite part
Just lost my SO of seven years with who I have a beautiful four-year-old daughter and the emotion Sally Field displays in this scene is spot on. Grief, anger, wondering "why", all of it...especially why a little girl now has to grow up without her father. When anyone asks me how I'm doing, well, this scene answers that question.
Hannah Farmer I lost my dad last year unexpectedly and there are still days I don’t know how I will manage without him. 🙏🏻❤️ Prayers and love to you over your loss. God keep you.
Sally Fields. World. Class. Acting. Just exceptional.
Iconic moment. Still gets me after all this time.
Rest in Peace Olympia Dukakis. The woman was and is a national treasure.
This SCENE IS HISTORICAL! SALLY FIELDS IS BRILLIANT ❤️❤️❤️
I’m only here because YellowJackets 😊
Oneof the best scenes ever such talent and emotion--all of them :)
Steel Magnolias one of them by far the best movies I've ever seen I grew up watching that and other stuff and that's a good movie😄😄💖💖👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Sally Field kicked ass in this scene.
What a powerhouse. Sally is incredible.
This always shreds me
Rest In Peace Olympia
I can’t stop watching this scene. I’ve lost every woman I loved deeply. My mother, my aunt, n my best friend. I miss them so bad. N this scene is on repeat like a favorite song
absolutely fantastic, all those great actresses did such a fine job, one of the best scenes from movies ever
Great women. Bless Olympia Dukakis. Love how M'Lynn chokes back her laughter
What a great memory it makes you laugh and cry at the same time RIP Olivia
This scene alone should have gotten SF an Oscar nomination, but it did happen.
ALL THESE ACTRESSES WERE SO GREAT EACH THEIR OWN PART..NO OTHER CAST ALIKE!!
Well sell T-shirts saying "I slapped Ouiser Boudreaux."
Funny enough, that shirt actually exists.
This is something I felt losing my babygirl and I have crazy sisters that do things like this too but they also help me stay strong I know my sisters have been through the same as well We try to help one another the best we can but it's so sad that my daughter wouldn't be able to see her crazy auntie but I know she here with me no matter what I will always love her She is my heart and Nothing could ever change that ❤💗I miss you my lil babygirl Shanay A. 6/2012
Sally did so well in this scene. She really portrayed the 5 stages of grief in 30 seconds. You know these are some great actors when you can go from bawling to laughing in the span of a minute.
Director: okay Sally I need you to go through the five stages of grief in 30 seconds. Sell it!
Sally: I gotchu 👌🏻
I don't think I would ever be able to handle outliving my child(ren), if I ever had any. I just don't know how any parent could get through it. It's not right. Death is such an ugly thing, even when a person passes peacefully in their sleep from natural causes. The rest of us left behind suffer alot. Sally Fields really did a good job portraying that, and the other ladies did equally good jobs trying to snap her out of it and console her with something that was able to bring laughter and humor through the tears and grief
She's my number 1 actress that I can feel emotion thru her...which her look so real...
My favorite this scene!!!!! You go from sobbing to laughing in about 10 seconds?!!!!!
This was SO fell done. This is so realistic. I think all of us know how these involuntary outbursts of hysterics feel when we are doubled over in sadness and disbelief. So well done.
I love this movie so much. I needed that cry thank you.
“Here! Hit this!” 😂😂😂😂
I Admit this tore at my heart something awful....But then the you are a pig from hell comment had me laughing and crying😭🤣
Well sell T-shirts saying "I slapped Ouiser Boudreaux."
You know Shelby was looking down on this laughing along and saying “They’re all going to be fine.”
1:11 LOL 😅😂🤣
I have to watch this movie again!
1:52
Ouiser: YOU ARE A PIG FROM HELL!!
Clairee: AND YOUR LIFES GOING DOWN THE TOILET!!
My 19 year old nephew died in a car accident this summer. How I wish my sister and brother in law could pick up the phone or see him coming through the door this Christmas!!! We last my dad last spring and this our first Christmas without both of them. Life is cruel at times. 😩😞
“are you HIGHhHhHH clariee ?!?”
This is the most heartbreaking scene I have ever seen on film. I don’t know how Sally did it. Wow 😞💔
Such a great cast 😢 this scene is cinema perfection
I know a lot of people roll their eyes at actors who overact in scenes, but believe it or not, people do get hysterical in certain situations. This is a spot on overreaction in my opinion.
wow amazing acting classe
I could watch this whole day and cry whole day. Sally Fields is so god damn actress
My mom loved this movie. It came out after my brother died
LOVE BOTH THIS VERSION AND THE QUEEN LATIFAH VERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Masterpiece
This ACTING is incredibly!
Have you ever heard about the trope "Narm"? This is the definition of it. This movie had some tone issues.
I love how Clare's wanted Malik to take a whack at Weezer
😂😂😂😂😂😂
HERE HIT THIS! best part in the film
Sally Field is a queen icon legend.
Well sell T-shirts saying "I slapped Ouiser Boudreaux."
I know what she was doing with Ouiser was wrong, but she did it out of desperation to help a close friend and as a means to help her feel better.
R.I.P. Olympia Dukakis
It's so funny how Shelby's problem has been solved by modern medicine: Her egg. Her husband's sperm. And a surrogate...
Hail science!
Gurl, you workin' for *H.Y.D.R.A.* or somethin'?
Yes so another generation can have medical problems to deal with. Yay!
LMAO!!! RIP Olympia.
No mother should have to feel like this!
Poor M'Lynn!
I've. Been. There. U should NEVER LOOSE A CHILD°° WHAT MATTER WHAT AGE, THEY ARE STILL UR CHILD!!! I KNOW THAT SCREAMING HURT.
Sis did this whole scene in ONE TAKE 💅🏼
This scene so beautifully illustrates how grief works...you can laugh with your friends but that doesn't mean you're healed. Her heart was still completely shattered but her friends were there to hold her up ❤️
Yes. Great dmwqy to put it
Ok then
I remember my cousins and friends made me laugh on my mom's funeral. It's how life works
❤❤ it'll will never run out.
RIP Olympia Dukakis. This will always be one scene I will always remember her for.
I'll always love her in 'Moonstruck' which is one of my favourite 80s movies
RIP Olympia Dukakis
She was name dropped in the Seinfeld episode where Jerry didn't know the name of the woman he was dating.
Same! Love it
What? She is? Damn it!!!
R.I.P. Olympia Dakunkias (1931-2021).
One of the finest moments in movie history.
This drastically turned from an utterly tragic heartbreaking moment into a ridiculous comedic scene.
On The US Soap Opera Guiding Light, there was a Boudreau Family and I thought it would have been so funny if one of them talked about a Distant Relative named Ouiser who was always so nasty.
Called ‘Comedic Relief’ :)
But in a believable way. That’s what makes it perfect.
Yes is beautiful!! I tried to share with my Goddaughter who can totally relate, but the people who have her illegally in custody apparently deleted so she cannot see.. ABSOLUTELY they've no sense of humor at all.. This is rich!!💎
You should see how Black People carry on at a Funeral. The Family scream, cry and mourn even when he/she is a SOB! Then the Family is allowed privacy for Two Hours then The "Party starts. My Family and I have so much fun that we have to "remind" ourselves that it's a Funeral. Yet we know that the "Dead" would want us to continue to have fun with our lives.
I actually just bought a "I slapped O'issuer Boudreux" T-shirt. LOL
WHERE CAN I BUY ONE? Brb I'm looking online
Did you see the Karen marching into the hospital like Ouiser haha
(^∇^)ノ♪
@@KatieT97Amazon!
I think Dolly was very under appreciated in this movie, she was brilliant, the scene with spud after Shelby died is amazing, when Spud says "Whats this for anyway" and Dolly turns around and says "it makes you beautiful", you can see her face and know she doesn't believe that anymore after Shelby dying.
She is very recognized by all of us and she did an amazing job in this movie. They all did!!
That scene with her husband is beautiful. When he discusses shelby’s husband losing her, and says that he doesn’t know if he could handle that..... so understated and honest without having the husband being emotional or soppy.
Truvey was always trying to connect w/Spud, hoping to share & receive some affection. Spud has just admitted he would be devastated "if something like that happened to him".(Truvey dying). Distracts himself from his emotions, by messing with the wax. I think the emotion on Truvey/Dolly's face, is because he has, finally admitted that he loves her. She says "it makes you beautiful" & he is looking straight at his beautiful wife. Dolly is gorgeous, marvelous and talented !
@@lucyhurst2534 hiding his emotions, while letting them out.
Agree- Dolly was natural, funny and gave a very moving performance.
Sally Fields shows in this scene alone how great of an actress she is. She played all the wild emotions of losing her daughter perfectly. Powerful scene. And Olympia's well timed joke was just so perfect.
I cried when I first saw this scene, but in 2005, I loss my daughter and those words stood out to me. Yes, Sallie Field put all those emotion right where they should be. I asked the same questions and thought the same thoughts. One of my favorite Movies of all time!!!
Sorry for your loss
She is an amazing actress
Jimmy Hunley *Hugs* :'(
rohit gupta Change your password. You're hacked.
I am so sorry.
"I can jog all the way to Texas and back, BUT MY DAUGHTER CAN'T!!!!"
sad and funny scenes at the same time excellent actresses very good script excellent movie one of my favorites ..
She never could.
Joke
Sally Field should have gotten an award for this scene. I die every time Clarice says "Go on M'lynne, knock her lights out!"
the best scene in a movie of all time, it makes you cry and laugh at the same time
I literally cry every time I see it
@@davidb.854 Me too.
me too, as trvey said "laughing through tears is a good emtion'
Brilliant actresses. One of the most touching , memorable scenes in the history of film making!
Tout à fait d'accord Chantal ! Je le fais avec Debra le sangre
well those are all Academy awards winners and a grammy winner 😂
"Are you HIGH, CLAIREE?!?!" Gets me every time.
"Here, hit this!.....O'isser, this is your chance to do something for your fellow man....Knock her lights out M'Lynn!",
RIP Olympia!!! She brought humor to the most tragic moments shot on film.
Sally should've won an Academy Award for this part if she hadn't already.
she won 2 Best Actress before this film
It is so unfair because she wasn’t even nominated for this movie.
The only scene in any movie that can have me crying like a baby to laughing like a loon in a span of 20 seconds.
"Steel Magnolias" makes you laugh, then cry, then laugh again.
STOP using such derogatory slurs as ''loon''. Some people do struggle with drastic mood swings, some people ARE mentally unwell, and people like you make it so much worse for them by using such slurs. Shame on you
This scene. It makes you cry and then laugh so hard your tears turn to tears of laughter. Brilliant.
I know Roberts got an Oscar nom for this, but Field SHOULD’VE gotten a nom herself.
"No. No. No. It's not supposed to happen this way. I'm supposed to go first. I always been ready to go first." 😭😭
Olympia Dukakis is the main reason why I love this movie. She provided such great comic relief. RIP Olympia.
This is one of the most masterfully paced/written/acted scenes I have ever seen!
It's been 20 years since I've first seen this movie and yet I always cry at this scene each time even though I know what happens. My sister died when she was 14 years old and it definitely took a toll on me and altered my life in many ways. It wasn't until this movie, until I saw this scene, that made me realize how my mother must've felt.
Even someone so strong can be broken down. To any parent out there that has lost a child, my thoughts are with you. I know you always planned to go first, which is normal and the way it should be, but you'll always have those memories to reflect on. Be grateful you were able to have them exist in your life, even if the timing wasn't enough. There's never enough time.
Love your post
Love your post 2
Even though it's been over two years now since my dad died suddenly after a heart attack, I still ask: "Why?" It still hurts. There's an empty space in my life and everyone else's that can't be filled. It doesn't get easier. You just learn to live with the loss.
You don't even realize how patronizing and tone-deaf your words are? Do you think your preaching will make them feel better? Do you think YOU can lecture parents of dead children what they should think or feel? You are telling them to be ''grateful''? Would you come to Ukraine and tell parents of MURDERED babies that they need to be ''grateful''? How ignorant are you? PISS OFF!!!!! You still don't understand a single thing!
I don't know how many takes they needed for Sally Field to capture those expressions and reactions but it's priceless. From the "wth??" at the start to "omg I don't want to laugh"... the whole thing is perfect. And the buildup is amazing also. Her swings from anger to frustration to utter sadness and back are just... wow...
Olympia Dukakis reminds me so much of my grandmother in this scene. She pulls off a southern matriarch so well. My grandmother has always tried to defuse tense situations with humor. "Here... hit this" will go down as one of the best lines in a movie ever.
God Bless Olympia who just died today on May 1, 2021
I watched Moonstruck for the umpteenth time shortly after she passed. There were some great performances in that movie but she just shined.
HERE HIT THIS!!!
"This" ahahaha
Sally Field is a legend! Also, not enough is said about the Shirley and Olympia performances. Their dynamic was incredible.
I think of this scene often. Sally Field has something larger than talent. This “breakdown” scene could have been played in so many different ways but I just can’t imagine anyone else that could even get close to what Sally is doing here.
Sally Field is such a tremendous actress. This scene especially is just so well done, so emotionally riveting. The entire cast of this film does a wonderful job, but Sally really hits hit home here
