The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
ROUND-BREAKING AI BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE - NEW EXHIBITION UNVEILS THE UNTOLD STORY OF A GILDED AGE AMERICAN HEIRESS.
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

Out of all of the castles that Julie has shown us through the years, I’d have to say that Castle Howard is my favorite for the majesty of the architecture. The views in every direction are outstanding! No wonder it’s a favorite for movies ❤️

Howard Castle is Amazing. My mother and I visited several years ago. My maternal grandfather was Charles Kevin Howard, of direct descent from the Norfolk Howards (Arundel). The Howard family originally arrived in the States in VA before 1634 (John Howard) and were Maryland Catholics by 1635 (Matthew Howard). Of course, here in the "colonies" there many of us now.

I have always loved Gilded Age architecture in the US. I just discovered your site. It’s great to see the inspiration from where they came. Thank you for what you are doing. I am a firm believer in saving history for all. I truly enjoy your videos and that they are a good length. Keep up the good work.

I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos! As an American who lived in England from 1982-1985, I loved it like you do! Thank you for speaking your American English accent, rather than trying to sound British, never goes over too well with the Brits 😆

I really love the exposed stone in the “not yet restored” room. I’d leave it exactly as is and claim it as my own sanctuary. Although it’s in the public main, so perhaps leaving it as a permanent tribute to the fire and an educational space to the public of what it takes to rebound after such an event.

Those “dead spaces” on the lower level, if cleared out and cleaned up in just the most basic mold remediation fashion & bathroom installed, could be marketed as off grid/device-free weekend retreat rooms to let. “Roughing It Retreat in a castle.” $100/night, access to the grounds.

As I said on another video it’s hard to wrap your mind around living in a house like that when you grew up in a small 3 bedroom ranch lol. I can see sitting in the living room and saying “I’m off to bed!” 45 minutes of walking you finally reach your bedroom. You would have to pack a lunch just to walk from one side to another and I know new visitors get lost at least once! I wonder if any ghosts are around? 👻 I just LOVE these long videos! They are very relaxing to watch.
