I've seen comments on other Shadow of the Beast videos from people who don't have the personal context of the time say that this game is horrible. Those people are somewhat correct, it does play a bit like rubbish by strict gameplay standards, but if that's all you're focusing on then you're missing the whole point. Most of them don't understand because they weren't there as a part of the Amiga scene. It wasn't about the gameplay, it was about the overall visual and auditory experience. These were the days of CGA and EGA DOS machines with screeching PC Speakers, the Amiga was revolutionary for graphics and sound and when Shadow of the Beast came out, there was nothing else at all like it out there. It absolutely blew people's minds and it's still a joy to look at and listen to. It's one of many unique experiences you can still only find on the Amiga and nothing as ever replicated or duplicated that same feel since.
Beast was something like the killer app for the Amiga back in the days.. The Crysis / Horizon / GTA5 of the early 90s - great visuals with a well chosen color palette, wich looks even great today.. the music and the quality of the sampled instruments are also awesome. I remember as I saw Beast the first time at a friends house on his Amiga 2000, that was a game you normally see in the arcades ... not on home computers... if they had tweaked the gameplay just a bit, this would be a true masterpiece, the PS4 Version fixed that gameplay problem, I like it very much because it has the classic Amiga game included.. A true classic!
I am not even old enough to be a part of the amiga scene but man i feel this game is a masterpiece. I emulated it to see how it is and i was blown away. Yeah the gameplay is trash but the music the visuals. It's amazing I'm on a streak of playing amiga era games and most of them are great
The gameplay was complete arse on a cheesy biscuit but the visuals and sound were absolutely astonishing for the time. Playing SotB was a bit like walking around an amazing art gallery, but every few minuets the security guard slaps you across the face with a wet fish. It was equal parts frustrating and awe inspiring. I think the only time I've been similarly impressed was playing Unreal for the first time and realising that 3D games can both play well *and* be colourful.
Absolutely spot on. The gameplay was OK, but incredibly annoying to start from the very beginning every time. So stopped playing it, went for the music. This game, together with Blood Money and Battle Squadron.
Memories of sleepovers at a friend when I was 16 or so, curtains drawn, Amiga turned on and connected to big speakers. We didn't play Beast much, but would load it just to listen to that awesome music and see the demo. Still gives me chills today. Such memories will never be in current generation where every media is everywhere all the time.
I still have all three Shadow of the Beast games on my Amiga 500 💾🕹️. Excellent classic game series 👍! David Whittaker composed the best Amiga game soundtrack, i have ever heard 😺👍. I'm 38 years old and still play Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 😸👍🕹️. Thanx for a legendary Amiga game music video, Naviaravideos. 😺👍

Intro should be also added. It was just mindblowing.. This game was jaw-dropping when it came out especially from a technology point of view. Music and graphics were just stunning.. This was like a demo as a game. The game itself was too difficult for me at least, though. I only listened to the music and enjoyed the dark atmosphere of the game. David Whittaker was my favourite composer of C64 and Amiga. This is a great rework!
Hi Matt, yes I agree .. the time Beast 1 was released it was a technically mindblowing arcade experience at home.. I think if they reworked the game with a faster punch and kneel animation and if they had used a energy bar with more lives instead the 12 points counter, then this could be overall a great game... I love these games, they were very unique back in the day I thought and always will be a big part of my personal gaming nostalgic memories as I grew up. I love the soundtrack to this game. The ps4 version I thought was a perfect remake, I still play with the original soundtrack option turned on.

Yeah, now that I'm thinking of it's slow progressing, almost doomy, sluggish (yet so atmospheric) rhythm, I guess you're right :) I'd also add to your so great Beast - involved projects, Shadow Of The Beast III, it's a must after you'll be done with the stellar ost of the second part of these Dark Fantasy beloved Epics :D

My jaw when I first saw the parallax scrolling of the intro and the music kicked in was something to behold.

I think this might have been the harshest music on the amiga. I mean that in the best sense. Just such a pounding track. I rinse it out to this day.
