I'm gonna go ahead and say as someone who got 100% completion on this game.
the only clever thing it does with the "play as a Templar" concept is removing the restriction on killing civilians because your character doesn't follow the creed, and instead sending assassins to hunt you down every couple of civilian kills instead of desync-ing you with the "[protagonist] did not kill civilians" message.
and it was intentional because for the few missions before Shay defects, the restriction is enforced, killing civilians gets a game over.

@friccle_ there is a theory that the reason why Shay is able to kill civilians without penalty is not just because he joined Templars which he didn't do right away after leaving the Brotherhood, but because of his experience in Lisbon. He felt guilty and blamed himself for making thousands of innocents to die. Therefore animus didn't penalize the player for killing civilians.

I disagree with the idea that Rogue makes a mockery of the assassins and templars. There have been multiple instances in all of the games in the franchise where there are some really bad assassins and some good templars who truly aren’t evil but just want to stop the chaos of free will. The entire plot of assassins creed 1 is Altair pursuing redemption for his crimes against the brotherhood and his recklessness. Arno’s story is to hunt down and avenge the death of his adoptive Templar Francois De La Sierre, who took him in as an orphan and raised him as his own son. And these are just two example out of an entire franchise with multiple entries. Neither side is black and white. I personally find it awesome that Ubisoft is willing to break the mold sometimes and tell stories that challenge our perceptions of the brotherhood and the order.

I think it just shows that we only know how the brotherhood looks with a charismatic leader who rebuilts it right (altair, ezio and connor) but this is what it looks like when an incompetent person like Achilles takes the wheel (even in ac3 he was incompetent but we didnt focus on that because he wasnt in charge). Shay is a good guy and I think the templars arent showing him the bad things about them. And the parts of Haytham we see are not exactly great so its not completely black and white (we see his ruthlessness and disregard for anything but the greater good). I think the biggest mistake is they cut it too early and instead of showing us the slow corruption like they did with Haythem, we see him being the good guy and then killing Arno's dad for unknown reason which we kinda see as an unexplained turn to evil

The novelty of playing as a Templar in this game just helps show that the Assassins and Templars are very similar, only the key difference being their views on how the world should run both sides having strong cases in their beliefs as one side seeks to protect the freedom of will and the other wants complete control over the will of others, both seeing it as for the greater good.

In a universe such as AC where we have a millennia long war for supremacy between assassins and Templars. The opportunity to play as a defector would’ve been a golden opportunity to tell the audience the bad guys side of the story, and maybe why people sometimes need to be controlled against their free will. The Assassins being pro earthquake weapon and being over the top stupid and us dealing mostly with super friendly and swashbuckling Templars did not do much to sell in that fantasy.
Assassins and Templars basically represent the concepts of Order vs Chaos, Chaos here meaning the uninterrupted flow of nature. I don’t think the series has ever really hammered down this theme in any of their games, however Haytham Kenway is so far the only character that has made a pretty good case for Order

The thing is that the game makes no sense in terms of the assassins and templars. Again it more of what Shay thought. Him going to the templars is rushed I liked the beginning, but I would have rather have the assassins like I don’t know leave him for dead after something happened and one of the templars goes and tries to heal him and he joins the templars later seeing that both sides are not bad which would make sense than just these artifacts that destroys cities and achilles going along with it.

engaging in chemical warfare and working with criminals is too much? you forgot about "nothing is true everything is permitted"? also the criminal part Ezio did the same thing and Jacob Frye literally started a gang, and Edward / Adewale are pirates, Eivor is a viking who raids and kill civilians

    • @QuatarTarandir
      @QuatarTarandir Рік тому +4

I think you are very much twisting "Nothing is true, everything is permitted". As Ezio said, "To Say That Nothing Is True Is To Realize That The Foundations Of Society Are Fragile And That We Must Be The Shepherds Of Our Own Civilization.
To Say That Everything Is Permitted Is To Understand That We Are The Architects Of Our Actions, and we should accept the consequences of our decisions, whether they be glorious or tragic". Also, most of the AC protagonists used criminals against the dictatorial rule of the Templars to help the innocent. Ezio and Jacob did. Edward and Adewale as pirates, maybe, maybe not (though that's before they're Assasins). And I can't speak for Eivor since I haven't played Valhalla, but based in the trailer it seemed Eivor avoided killing innocents.

    This game is grossly UNDERRATED.
it’s a great game, the majority of my issues with this game are due to the lack of a budget and attention to detail. Unity was given all the real attention: overall ROGUE was a great game and Shay a great protagonist.
This game showed that the Assassins too can be corrupted and arrogant. The Assassins thru the franchise have always been clear stay to the CREED. Shay saw that Achilles and the colonial assassins violated the Creed and didn’t keep to it. Shay is the only one who keep to the Creed he was betrayed not the other way around.

They could have made a trilogy where they had unity introducing Arno and a fully developed and thought out Rouge where you introduce shay and reveal that he killed arno's dad after a year or two after releasing unity. Now you have the final game of this trilogy where you play as both shay and Arno where they confront each other. This could have been the "Vengance Trilogy" or something since we have another trilogy, that being ezio's with a lighthearted tone while this one is dark

I don't know if my memory is correct, but wasn't Rogue initially supposed to be only for the PS3 and 360, while Unity did not release on those consoles because they were outdated hardware?
This explains why the game was not very revolutionary and reused a lot of Black Flag's gameplay. It was designed to be a "filler" game, but then it eventually was released on other platforms as well.

Thank you so much for saying this because this is what I’ve thought for years. When Unity came out, it did feel underrated but then after really thinking about it really is just the novelty, they don’t show the Templars perspective they just reverse the roles. I could see the Templars risking innocent lives for the greater good not the assassins. Also I feel as though SO many people have been saying it’s under rated for so long now that it isn’t under rated at all, nor was it ever really

I think that its cool they made a story where its not black and white 100% of the time. But they legit switched roles of assassin's acting like templars. I think it would have mellowed in together if he was hung up on what the assassin's made him do that no matter how bad the templars got when he joined. Cuz u can make them out to be the good guys at the start to trick shay of joining them and then he just slowly got corrupted And no matter how good the assassin's seem from that point on and trying to explain themselves. Showing regret. Contrast from them at the start where they were flawed and didnt care like how templars are shown as. He would have that constant thought of what happened and justify all the bad stuff he was doing. And at the end he was just corrupted by the templars. I think that would have been a better dynamic then swapping roles. It would show that templars are the evil side but it's not always so black and white. Where some factions can be flawed in the brotherhood. I think that would have been better imo

I believe that’s a misunderstanding that a lot of people have about assassins Creed Rogue but in reality, it’s just trying to show you that despite all the games, we played not all assassin’s are the good guys some of them can be misguided and downright bad people, and not every Templar is an evil mastermind scheming to take over the world some of them truly just want to bring order and peace to the world. That’s what the story was trying to portray in my opinion this isn’t some dimensional story where the good guys are always good and the bad guys are always bad. It’s subjective both sides think that there’s a good guys and fighting the good fight it’s just how it is and that’s what this game is trying to show you..

Honestly while i don't dislike Rogue, i definitely have to say that the whole narrative of showing that not all Assassins are good and not all Templars are bad were done better in other games. Even Unity did a better job of showing that through its story (which imo was really good). Think about it- the Assassins punished Arno for tracking down and defeating the person who killed the Grandmaster of the order at the time. Meanwhile earlier the Grandmaster of the Templar order took in an orphaned child and raised him as his son. Other games in the series showed that really well too like AC1, AC3. Which also happens to be my only criticism of the Ezio trilogy, in that the Ezio trilogy story never questions the belief of either side.

The point of Rogue was to doubt yourself and question yourself on either side’s legitimacy and superiority over each other. Yeah it sucks that it’s not too different or expands on much except for a little bit before AC3, but do you expect them to make a completely new game just because we switched perspectives in a game that summarizes war?
And almost no one talks about this game. I just beat Rogue, after the first time I played it years ago, it was so forgettable to me I thought I was confusing parts of AC3 and Black Flag. I think it’s fair to assume most people don’t like this game, which is fair. There’s plenty of AC games that don’t hit just right, but Rogue isn’t a nothing burger. Don’t treat it like so

That's pretty much my opinion on it. Rogue was a missed opportunity to actually EXPLORE the moral grayness between the Assassins and the Templars and see the good and bad in both sides. But nah, they needed Shay to be justified in defecting to the Templars, so they just made the Assassins straight up villains. Hell, their outposts literally have flags with their insignia waving around for everyone to see, and the interception missions show them sending hit squads to carry out public killings so they can keep the populace too afraid to do anything. Also, the main story was way too short and didn't give us enough time to explore Shay's transition from an Assassin to a Templar.
I still enjoyed playing Rogue, but it needed way more time in development.
