I am here to defend until my last breath, the art of ghosting in stealth games. There is nothing more immersive, challenging and rewarding, than completing a level or taking out a target, without being seen, and without spilling blood. 10/10 recommend

In black flag, the sequence where you had to infiltrate in the kingston plantation to find the sage, was a active nightmare, you have to disable 3 alarms as a mission objective, but there is always one eye or two in the first alarm, the guards can see guards sleeping even when inside tall grass
The other two alarms are doable, if anything by disabling a single guard

Thank you so much for posting about ghosting so regularly! Hopefully Ubi makes a game where you are actually rewarded for leaving non-targets alive. I am a long time ghost practitioner, always have been, and always look forward to you talking about it.
Other than that, my favourite AC games to do ghosting are mostly for Narrative reasons.
    1. Mirage: I think Basim as a character is a very noble and thoughtful person when it comes to killing people. Also, Mirage do not reward any xp for killing guards. I also love the fact that there is no knockout, guards remaining untouched is the perfect way to ghost for me.
    2. Origins: Again for narrative reasons. Also the level design is phenomenal and really encourages for ghost stealth.
    3. Syndicate: The mission design is excellent for ghosting and is really enjoyable, although I don't think either of the twins would care about killing folks.
    4. AC1 of coursee, I have done ghosting with Ezio too, but not for the most part.
    5. I cannot enjoy pure ghosting with Arno, it takes me out of the experience. I still try to kill as few guards as I could, but Ghosting and Arno for me don't go much hand in hand.
    6. I completely and intentionally assassinate everyone in Odyssey just because it hugee amount of xp with streaks :)

I think the Syndicate twins wouldn't mind killing a guard if it is necessary but I think they would rather not. Both of them are very skilled field assassins, therefore they were trained to not go out killing everyone just for the sake of it. I ghost through most of that game everytime I play it, only excusing the templar NPC kills (some places have more than one templar NPC, so for a narrative reason I don't think is inaccurate to kill them).

    Altair - definitly ghost
Ezio - I don't think he was ghosting in II and Brotherhood, but for sure in Revelations
Connor - I don't think he was ghosting
Edward - I feel like he was start ghosting at the end of a game
    Arno - Definitly ghost
    Evie - ghost
Jacob - he propably sometimes trying to ghost, but he suck at it (just my head canon)
Bayek - he propably start ghosting after the betray of Cleopatra and Cesar
    Basim - ghost

This right here is what I like most about ac1. The capital A Assassins are based on the soldiers of a real nation based in castles spread throughout the Levant. These soldiers were almost always spotted after hitting their mark, so they only had one shot to kill one man. They did hide in plain sight and stay their blades until the time was right when they would use a dagger or poisoned arrow to kill a powerful figure. It’s a damn shame that Assassins creed today has strayed so far from that historical accuracy.

Assassinating enemies in these games is really fun but I think in a narrative perspective a more ghost stealth approach should be implemented by ubisoft or even let ubisoft add consequences (like dishonored as you mentioned) to your actions like killing would make the game more immersive as an assassin and make more sense lore wise. I mean most people you assassinate are guards working minimum wage making money for their families 💀

For me AC1 still counts, becauae once you're being discovered it's even more impressive. Like "how did that dude kill our man and nobody noticed him come?!". Then you just use parkour to escape, basically saying to everyone "I only kill bad people. Don't be like my victim or you're next". However, the only exception to this is probably the fight in Arsuf where you cannot progress until you clear the area of enemies and then also Masyaf where lots of fights are scripted. But when it comes to main targets, it's totally possible to kill only them and nobody else, even during open combat / chase.

In the first AC the combat was so repetitive and based around counters that I wanted to avoid it as much as I could so I gravitated towards stealth and ghosting.
In AC2, Brotherhood and Revelations you got so much tools it became more about figuring out all kinds of cool ways to complete missions. Sometimes with stealth, brute force etc.
I LOVED that from AC3 you had the chokehold. In a way it felt way less violent to just choke out targets instead of killing them.
I always prefered bare handed fighting and sleepholds as in a way I avoided the brutal deaths etc.
Even the actual targets I took out with a chokehold, after which I still got their death scene.
But I love your video how you explain it from a philosophical perspective.
How killing and drawing attention with violence would harm the underlying ideas.

I do agree. However, I purpose that sometimes the Assassins had to take out a guard or two. Say Altair took out a few guards when saving people, Ezio took out a few breaking into the Vatican, Etc.
Now did these members go on massive killing sprees? No, they did not. Canonically that is.
Anyways, great video! Been a fan of the series for a few years now. Might try a full canonical run with the Ezio series.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who considers this playstyle. I'll watch videos of other plyers just slaughtering their way through bases and outposts and I think to myself, "do all these guards really have to die?"
And as for stealth games that incentivize a more pacifist playstyle, Metal Gear Solid V: The phantom pain is probably one of the best examples. The game gives you the option of using both lethal and non lethal equipment during missions. There's also a feature called demon snake where, if you you constantly use lethal force and rank up enough demon points, then the shrapnel in snake's head will elongate into a horn and his face will be covered in blood that can't be washed off even if he takes a shower.

  • @4589dude
    @4589dude 13 днів тому +7

It's called a Ghost playstyle because you're supposed to be like a ghost, completing the mission and leaving it as if you were never there. That means leaving no trace of your path (except those mandated by your objective i.e. assassinating a target or stealing an item), and by definition choking someone out wouldn't be an option. It's not purist to say that just objectively doesn't make it a ghost run anymore. That just makes it a simple non-lethal run, which is its own thing. Ghosting isn't about lethality, it's about 0 suspicion.

I don't know if you've played splinter cell blacklist or not. But ghosting in that game is the most rewarding playstyle and also the one with the most tools. I wish AC was more rewarding just as blacklist was. But nonetheless it feels pretty intense to try and ghost through these games. Specially if you limit the use of tools such as smoke bombs which are kinda broken

Theres alot of areas where you can but for the most part theres always atleast one guard you HAVE to interact with. A true ghost is like, no one even knew you were there. Which ive only been able to do with a few games. I think the best game where there was equal challenge to fun was the Metro games.

I think ghosting also helps with general immersion.
I'm a veteran AC player, I've played nearly every main release game except Valhalla and Unity, starting way back when I got the very first one on Gamefly, back when that was a thing. Before you could stream Netflix.
And the problem, for me, with killing all of the guards along with the target is that the guards should notice, even if they don't see or hear any of your kills. Even if they don't find any bodies, beyond a certain point it should occur to them that Gary isn't at his post, that they haven't seen Steve in a while, that Joe said he was just going around the corner to piss, he really should have been back by now.
Sure, it might take a while for someone in a fort garrisoned by fifty to notice that one or two guys is missing, but after about four or five kills you'd think somebody would notice that somebody isn't where they're supposed to be and start poking around and getting suspicious.
But they never do. They just keep wandering along their patrol routes, looking for, not anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, but you and dead bodies, specifically. As long as they don't see either of those things, everything is fine. Even if twenty minutes ago there were twenty other people in the building and now they're alone, no assassin and no dead bodies, so everything's fine.
A lot of stealth games have this problem in my experience, actually. Thief, Dishonored, Skyrim, Fallout, Deus Ex, Far Cry, Splinter Cell; in fact I don't think I've ever played a stealth game that didn't have this failing.
And I know skyrim, fallout, far cry, and deus ex are not primarily stealth games, but they all have at least serviceable stealth mechanics and can be played as stealth games, and more importantly when doing so they too suffer from this problem.
The closest I can get is just not hiding bodies and leaving them where they were killed so that surviving NPCs will notice immediately when something is up, but that too isn't perfect, too far in the other direction.
Ghosting completely negates that problem though. The whole point is that you kill your target and loot the place dry without anyone ever knowing you were there, like the valuables just teleported away and the boss spontaneously sprung a leak in his neck.
Really the only way to do a high lethality run without breaking my immersion is to just not stealth. Just go in guns blazing every time. It doesn't make sense that they don't notice that they're being killed off, so don't hide it.

Yes I believe Ghost Stealth is canon✨ because it upholds the tenets of the creed
    But
I found the ghost stealth play style in the Ezio trilogy frustrating because the level design often forces non-target kills, making it feel like I'm treating guards as target dummies.
That's why I love AC1, we have only a handful of tools under our belt yet we can assassinate 8 out of 9 targets as target only, AC1's level design was incredible

Not to mention NPC awareness like Mirage where I was spotted thru walls. I did ghosting when I was younger but without realizing I was doing it. Pllinter cell and other such games of that time. I now no longer try very much. Too much effort and stress for zero reward. I was doing forth in Origins, I clear every enemy without being seen. I finally go for the Commander asassassination and it doesn't kill him. I got so mad I raged kill all the enemies on 3 attempts, and finally kill the health sponge commander. I think Origins is one the top 10 games ever made. But ghosting is fucking annoying when the devs don't respect your efforts to be stealthy.

Funnily enough, personally I feel like AC1 is the only game (aside from maybe... rogue i guess?) where it doesn’t feel that wrong to kill guards because the Assassins in that game are a lot more morally grey. In all the other games I feel like killing guards left and right creates a lot more ludonarrative dissonance because the Assassins are the indisputable Good Guys and so Ghosting feels like it makes more sense.
For example, I discovered Ghosting not too long ago through some cool Mirage videos and then did a whole playthrough of that game in that style and it just felt so right bc Basim (in Mirage) really feels like someone who’s very opposed to unnecessary bloodshed (see the scene where Ali interrogates that one guy and Basim very strongly disapproves of his brutal methods).
And then when I was finished with Mirage I wanted to try with some of the other games, but when I replayed AC1, idk, it almost felt WRONG… like, Altair is a lot more ruthless than most of the other protagonists and a lot more loose with the definition of "innocent", even at the end of his arc (only in AC1 tho, bc I feel like Revelations kind of changed his characterization but that’s a whole other story), like, until the very end he still kills every single interrogation target bc they might warn his main target and endanger the mission. So to me it almost felt out of character for him to not kill a guard when that would make reaching the target easier.

Ghosting isn't just "no killing". Ghosting is when you leave no trace behind at all, as if you were never there. The term originates from the classic Thief titles, there are specific rules for them on the TTLG Forums. Since AC is such a different game, I would imagine the rules would have to be different. If you were going by the Thief rules, you wouldn't be allowed to use tools like smoke bomb, and being seen/detected for even a second would end in a failure, even if you didn't trigger an alert/combat. I have tried ghosting before in AC and it is absolutely brutal, to the point of being practically impossible to do using the original ruleset from Thief.

while I believe that ghosting is the 'canonical' way to play AC, I don't think that AC as a series was designed to be played as a ghost. for instance, I'm in my 3rd Dishonored run atm, this time playing ghost clean-hands, and it's just so obvious how this game was fine-tuned to allow this playstyle to be played. also, in AC, I also get a feeling that all the enemies are actually evil. for instance, in Unity you can constantly see guards harassing the common people and every once in a while actually killing them. it's not like in Dishonored, where you get the feeling that the guards are innocent amidst a huge political conspiration which they don't understand at all, all of this while thinking that it was you who killed the Empress

  • @micronoid
    @micronoid 14 днів тому +1

The difficulty of ghosting in AC doesn't really have anything to do with skill, its because the game doesn't properly facilitate ghosting, compared to something like Splinter Cell. There is no immersion in playing that way because the game doesn't reward you, punish you, react or change to you playing that way, only games that properly facilitate ghosting do. If we're working on the premise that ghosting is how an assassin would actually operate, then ghosting would be waiting for the right opportunity when the target was alone. By not this and approaching the target while they're in a heavily guarded building would in of itself be an act that compromises the brotherhood. But of course, you wouldn't have a game if you were carrying out an assassination the way an actual assassin would. Which comes back to the original point of immersion which isn't there because that's not how an actual assassin would ever operate. A true assassin who only kills his target doesn't approach the target while they're in a heavily guarded building, if they were to they would be taking out guards.
