After this crash, there were many other pilots trying to stay in the air as long as this crew on simulator. None of them could, they would go down after a few seconds or minutes whilst the JAL 123 crew flew for half an hour before kissing the land !

@@Realistart not so simple... you have also to care about speed... climb ,speed up. pitch, slow down. while at the same time you have to control lateral movement. Unluckily with flaps, fuel load and gear down they were unable to stop the sink rate even with full thrust for all 4 engines...

Not only that, but they did most of it while in a hypoxic state. Anyone who doesn’t quite understand what a hypoxic brain is/does should definitely research because that makes their efforts even more surreal.
Not only that, but the fact that there was 4 survivors and possibly could have been dozens more, just proves their efforts weren’t wasted.
To points the fingers here, it should be at Japanese government for denying US military pilots the chance to assist when they were in the area and not leave the search operation until the next morning. Medical examiners concluded countless people could have been saved immediately after they he crash had they not have waited. R.I.P all the souls of flight 123.

JAL Flight 123 was originally piloted by a co-pilot as a test. After the anomaly occurred, he was replaced by Pilot Takahama. Mr. Takahama was a professional who had flown a total of about 12,000 hours. He flew without a tail for about 33 minutes without giving up. He attempted to land at nearby Yokota Air Base and Haneda Airport, but crashed on Mount Osutaka in Ueno Village, Gunma Prefecture.
Pilot Takahama, co-pilot, engine pilot, cabin crew and passengers pay their respects.

I've listened to this entire recording. It's very chilling, but the pilots managed to keep a dead plane in the air for around 30 minutes with no tail and no hydraulics to steer. Supposedly, other pilots tried this scenario in simulators, and no one could keep it airborne for as long as the JAL pilots did. Sadly, there would've been more survivors had Japan not delayed the search.

I was there in Yokohama when it happened during the dark evening, not the daytime this video shows. The site was so remote, and the terrain was so steep, and rugged. The next morning the Japanese army helicopters flew in the personnel and materials to build a helipad on a steep slope to begin rescue efforts. They had to build an access road for the main rescue personnel to reach the site. There was nothing anybody could have done until the next morning. This happened in my home state of Gunma. My brother was a forest ranger who participated in the rescue or body recovery efforts. Please don't believe what other people tell you because so many people describe the accident incorrectly.

When Japan Airlines Flight 123 crashed, the fourth engine fell off after hitting a tree, as shown at the end of the video. It is said that the engine was running at maximum power so it was traveling at speeds of over 600km/h.
It then made contact with the ground, causing all engines and the rear of the cabin to fall off, and the nose of the aircraft briefly turned upward, but the aircraft lost its balance, overturned and crashed.

On August 12 th,1985, JAL flight 123, a B-747 bound for Osaka Airport, went out of control 12 minutes after the take-off from Haneda Tokyo International Airport, as it approached cruising height of 7,200m, because of fatigue failure of the aft bulkhead, followed by the structural failure of the vertical fin, resulting the crash at Mt. Osutaka, Ueno, Gunma Prefecture after 32 minutes of irregular flight. By this accident, 520 of the 524 passengers and crew on board were killed, making it the worst single aircraft accident in the world.

Those brave, terrified and doomed pilots fought with that damaged plane for more than an hour before they lost the fight. There were only 4 survivors. The US Airforce were nearing the crashsite and offered assistance, but the Japanese Govt refused the help. It took 12 hours for the Japanese rescue workers to climb to the location and more than 540 people died.

Many more people could have been saved in this disaster (were saved four), but the rescue services did not consider it appropriate to go to the site at night and did not leave until the morning, although they arrived nearby in the evening. Rescued waited for them for 14 hours, listening as those who also survived died of cold during the night. There was an American military airforce base near where the plane crashed, having the appropriate equipment enabling intervention immediately after the event. However, the Japanese refused to accept their offer of assistance! This gives an image of their national characteristics closer to the truth than the standard one. Their pride and ignorance can be horrible.

If this is true, it's pretty interesting... The Japs were also noticeably less concerned about preserving life than the Americans were in WWII. I wonder how a people become like that. I don't think this characteristic serves them well. And they're not the only place like that - It's astonishing, the differences in casualties for many countries who just threw their men at the enemy without regard for saving as many as possible. We(The US) lost 400,000 in both theaters of WWII combined, and we consider that number horrendous, but it's Nothing compared to Japan or Russia.

Tail had been damaged and weakened due to a landing or take off accident when it hit the runway. It was fixed, but not entirely meaning the structure of the tail was slowly weakening. This flight was its last due to the cabin pressure always bloating the old 747 causing the tail to finally give way and break. The pilots practically lost all hydraulics and was stuck in a dutch roll without any control over the airplane. They tried using their flaps with the emergency electrical motors and used the engine power to steer the plane. Unfortunately, due to high altitude and hypoxia the captain made a mistake of not lowering the left engines powers when the flaps and gears were down. This caused the plane to bank right and eventually into the ground. For many flight simulations, not a single pilot has reached those 2 pilots time of survival before they unfortunately crashed.

The full transcript shows even better how outstanding this flight crew was. They knew they were boned from the beginning, but they explored every option without panicking. I think if it weren't for the terrain, they might have made a controlled crash landing, with a better outcome.
All because of a little piece of metal, used incorrectly as a maintenance shortcut, many flights prior to this accident.
