    This describes just how I feel about being an injured dancer. You want to go to rehearsal and watch but at the same time it makes you depressed because all you want to do is get up and start dancing with them but you know if you do that will only make it worse :(

    I started studying ballet when I was 7,but when I was 18 I snap my left Achilles tendon and even after 6 surgeries it never got healed completely, so I had to quit to be a professional ballet dancer. (It was a huge disappointment since I sacrificed my childhood to dance and I had all the requirements. I have natural turn out, natural hypermobility and the right body proportions)
    Now I'm 31 I still do ballet class everyday but only as a hobby.

    I am not a Ballet fan and I have no idea why I'm watching these videos. Having said that, I am a huge American football fan and its amazing to listen to these dance talk about the same things that plague football players. Many football players have trained all their lives just to get injured in their Sr. year. They never lace up their shoes as an NFL player. Eight plus years of training, practicing, competing all year long, over in an instant. Also, the players who make it to the NFL have an average playing career of 3-years. I've always considered the NFL the most brutally competitive sport/activity in the world, but after watching these dancer's, I'm rethinking my position. Thanks for the lessons, I learned something new.

      Ballet is the most difficult of the physical activities - far more difficult than football. Ballet dancers are top athletes. It takes a minimum of eight years of professional training for most of each day, six days a week, just to reach a level where a ballet student might be accepted into a company - not just a top company but any company. And most successfull dancers start pre-professional training when they are about three years old. Only the cream of the crop are accepted into top world companies, and most of them are never promoted out of the corps to become soloists. A ballet career for top dancers is a maximum of twenty years for those who maintain their stamina, fitness, technique, health, weight, discipline, competitiveness, and congenial personality - usually higher ranked dancers, because lower- ranked dancers are more likely to fall by the wayside before the twenty years. Better than football, I think, because football is really rough resulting in a much shorter career, also with huge money at risk riding on players. The best trained and most successful dancers are Russian trained under the Vaganova/Russian methods.

    Something that I have come to understand and appreciate through these UA-cam videos is just how much of a subject, liability and challenge injury is for every dancer. This is tough, and it's one more example of how ballet is definitely not for the faint-hearted. In fact, ballet dancers are some of the greatest heros for me, unsung as they largely are, especially when they are not dancing due to being forced to take time off. But it is exactly their endurance during such times and experience that make them so special, so wonderful and so inspiring.

      Yeah, I've dealt with ankle injuries since I was a little kid, some of them pretty severe. The tendons in one ankle are completely shot and require surgery and the other ankle is just one more sprain away from the same situation. Still, it's nothing compared to what these folks go through! It must be so painful to have to stop dancing (temporarily or permanently) when you've dedicated your entire life to ballet and it's not just your hobby, but your career.

    I want to hug sweet Claire and take care of her. I understand dedicating oneself to an art (although I became a professional singer which is much less stressful). I feel so sad for her and her sister alone in NYC at such a young age. As a mother I can't imagine that and wonder what the circumstances could possibly be that they are not there with a parent. They will certainly learn resilience. Hope for all of these dancer's sake that they are able to broaden their world view, even a little, to have a plan B in case of injury (or in Amar's case..scandal) and to see they can have a full wonderful life even if they are not dancing professionally any more.

    I was due to be in a dance show at my college four weeks ago, and it was two days before opening night. There was a step where we’d rom de jambe as we spun in a circle toward the end of the dance. I somehow managed to roll my ankle while doing it, but I didn’t fall though. I tried to keep going but I limped a lot at the end, and I was in shock because it happened so fast. I ended up on crutches (for a week) because I had trouble walking, plus that injury knocked me out of the show all together. They got someone who had a lot of dance experience at the last minute who went on for me. I won't lie, I was relieved about the situation but really upset to watch all of the work and put into a long rehearsal period, goes up in smoke.

    • @AnnapurnaMoffatt
      @AnnapurnaMoffatt 8 років тому +12

      I would assume they get paid (unless, of course, it's the sort of injury that ends their career). I mean, some are out for up to a year--it would be pretty cruel for them to go that long without pay. And as the video says, injuries are common, so companies would have to have a plan in place for when a dancer's out.

    i say, ‘dancers get hurt, because they love dance so much. they don’t give up, dancers aren’t just dancers, they entertain us, they do it because they love it. i’m a dancer myself, that’s offensive.’

  • @hannab129

    I was never in any way near being a professional ballet dancer, but I've done it as a hobby for quite a couple of years, I was allowed to go on point and I was actually thriving somehow, and then my hip started hurting a lot, and I had to have hip surgery at 18 years old (though I'm still noch sure if it really was necessary 5 years later...) but it was SO frustrating to not be able to do the things I could before my surgery. Nothing felt the same, I lost a lot of muscles in my one leg and am restricted in my mobility on that side as well.... I stopped dancing a year after I started again, because it was too frustrating for me. So I applaud the professional dancers for pulling through and working their way back... Because that is fricking hard!

    I am a professional ballet dancer and I have been off with injuries in both my knees for a year now. Although it's been about 2 years that I have been struggling with this injury. The first year I took a month off then I pushed through the pain with pain killers and taping just so I could get that promotion, which I got but could not enjoy it as I caused the injury to become chronic. I am now 28 and at that point of do I want to come back and possibly have pain again, but live my dream or just take care of my body and miss dancing pain free..

    One month ago, I was dancing and I was doing a leg mount, and I heard what sounded like a carrot breaking and I could feel something in my right hip twist out of place. It was really scary and equally painful. One month later and the pain is gone but I can't lift my right leg as high or open the hip. It is extremely frustrating.

    Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles and madness in this world today, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
    Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
    . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
    If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
    He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
    He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
    He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
    Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]
    - (AMPLIFIED version)
    NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.
    If you have any questions let me know

    Of course dancers are prone to injury. Look at their physique, they need more muscle to prevent injury for the athletic moves. They should look like athletes, but they are way under devoloped in muscles

  • @dboyfff
    @dboyfff 10 років тому +7

    NO! Most moves should be very natural...and overflexing your back is unnatural. So apparently, a course in what's natural and not needs to be everyone's refresher....yah, flexing your hip back is actually locking it into place and thus injury prone if you land in that flexed position....with the first and only jump...you add butt padding if you want to look like your flexing back...haha..not much of a curve it should be and the natural S curve of the back should be doing the work but not hipflexing backwards...that won't absorb shock as well. BTW, guys shouldn't really be flexing their backs at all...while a slight flex or the lumbar is actually helpful if your lumbar area is flat and not as curved. Injury is usually muscle fatigue and not only that not using the given part correctly as you turn not in that order...but the more tired and less rested you are the more prone to injury everyone gets...the max per day of rehearsal is really 2 hours every other day...and during those two hours half that time is actually planing the moves visually...per equity I think...that was the rule 40 plus years ago...to avoid injury..so you are expected to work smart using memory and with boards like futball or soccer. Whats the point..we use sports physiology and normal physiology to determine the parameters as has been done 40 years ago...to make the injuries go away and turn into ZERO injuries...unless the theater or company wants to pay for injuries..whats their injurance policy like...they don't assign a role to have you rehearse all day and then turn around and say your fired because they broke the rules of physiology. Yah, after a bad injury you don't go back...you go into training or something else. I think after aging out you may be out of luck...that's usually in your thirties and the roles you take are up to your discretion because the chances of injuries increase signifcanlty in your 30's...so most the jumping and lead roles are discretionary...and on your insurance rather than the theaters. Old rules not sure why I remember.

    the good thing about snapping your achilles tendon is that it's supposed to make you jump higher, most dancers snap their's at some point. I've even heard of some you get their achilles tendon snipped so that you can jump higher without the many year wait of waiting for it to snap.
