I'm a drummer and honestly another drummer or any other person can't determine weather or not if a drummer is good or bad. You have to be the drummer to understand their abilities. But Lars has good skills, I like his style of the 5/6 odd timing, creative fills, and the way he follows with bass and rhythm guitars.

I’ve heard it was Tama bell brass or Ludwig black beauty from a lot of different sources. But to my ear - having listened to that album countless times and having played both snares - I’m pretty sure it’s the Tama bell brass.

I started playing drums when I was 9 years old because of how inspired I was by Lars in the Binge and Purge live shows... with that said, it’s amazing to me how disconnected Lars is from the drumming community. He’s had techs taking care of his gear for so long that he doesn’t even know the specs to his signature snare. I’ve since moved on to drummers like Benny Greb, Anika Nilles, Thomas Lang, etc., but Lars will always be the drummer that sparked my interest. I’ll own this snare some day just because of how badly I wanted it at an early age.

Say what you will about Lars. There was a point in history where we looked up to him. Master Of Puppets helped me bridge the gap between Shout At The Devil, and South Of Heaven. I wasn't as lucky as you young kids coming up, with access to all the new amazing talent here on UA-cam.

Actually, his signature set is a collection of various metal trash bins, barrels and metal lids, it's supposed to emulate the sound of his drums during the St Anger era
Lars is definitely NOT the best drummer BUT "he" like any REAL drummer has his own style and his style of drumming fits the the band very well. As for his snare drum?....well 35 years ago I had a (Percussion Plus) piece of crap chrome steel snare drum that sounded like a cannon. A chromed steel snare is a chrome steel snare to me. They all sound very much TOO loud and sound like a cannon. I abandoned the steel snares many years ago for brass and bronze and maple and never looked back. If all you want is a snare that sounds like a cannon and 10 times louder than anything else on the kit then any steel snare will do. Let's not fool ourselves any longer, they are good for nothing but sounding loud and have a VERY annoying ring. If you want a ring thats pleasant to the ears then brass or bronze is where it's at but they are not as loud and thus fit the volume level of the rest of the kit more appropriately. MY TWO CENTS...
I like Lars alot, but i like John Dolmayan's signature snare drum show more. Lars kinda sounds like his snare is the best and it's the only snare you need :D. But i still love this guy.
Cody Walker Jr. He's an 80's metal drummer who has never really cared much about the sound. If you listen to Master of Puppets or Justice, his snare drum is just fat and low. And that's perfect for Metallica's music. I personally wouldn't buy it, but he's not going for versatility, sensitivity or warmth.

The vast majority of Lars' snare tone that people seem to dislike so much is down to tuning, and in studio EQ, compression, reverb etc. He obviously uses quality gear. But you can tell he's kidding around here anyhow.

Lars is definitely NOT the best drummer BUT "he" like any REAL drummer has his own style and his style of drumming fits the the band very well. As for his snare drum?....well 35 years ago I had a (Percussion Plus) piece of crap chrome steel snare drum that sounded like a cannon. A chromed steel snare is a chrome steel snare to me. They all sound very much TOO loud and sound like a cannon. I abandoned the steel snares many years ago for brass and bronze and maple and never looked back. If all you want is a snare that sounds like a cannon and 10 times louder than anything else on the kit then any steel snare will do. Let's not fool ourselves any longer, they are good for nothing but sounding loud and have a VERY annoying ring. If you want a ring thats pleasant to the ears then brass or bronze is where it's at but they are not as loud and thus fit the volume level of the rest of the kit more appropriately.

Cody Walker Jr. He's an 80's metal drummer who has never really cared much about the sound. If you listen to Master of Puppets or Justice, his snare drum is just fat and low. And that's perfect for Metallica's music. I personally wouldn't buy it, but he's not going for versatility, sensitivity or warmth.

The vast majority of Lars' snare tone that people seem to dislike so much is down to tuning, and in studio EQ, compression, reverb etc. He obviously uses quality gear. But you can tell he's kidding around here anyhow.

As much as I hate to admit it, if you take out Lars in the equation it wouldn't be Metallica anymore. Even if you replace him with a "perfect" drummer like Mangini or a faster drummer like Jordison, it still wouldn't sound like metallica
