  • Know the capabilities and short comings of your K frame and J frame snub nose revolvers ejector rod.. be prepared at the range to manually “strip by hand” rounds that the ejector rod cannot push out due to length.

In 1974 I had to reload my issued Colt Detective Special (about the same size as a J Frame) during a gunfight w/armed robbery suspects. That gun is a six shot & has a longer ejector rod, enabling me to clear the empty brass quickly, recharge w/a speedloader & get back in the fight very quickly.

Another reason I prefer J frame three inch revolvers with longer ejector rods over two inch. Good point. Originally two inch revolvers were meant to be backup guns where reloads were not critical rather than primary guns but folks today carry them as primaries. Some detectives carried them as primary guns they could conceal undercover also back then and I am sure they had problems ejecting cases also for reloads. Thanks for showing folks this. Very instructive and folks need to know.

I really want a 3 inch revolver. For whatever reason $$$. I almost got a Taurus 856 but I really don’t want to go the Taurus route… IF I get a 3 inch it probably will be Ruger. As S&W 3 inch prices are Just crazy even blued

@@OldCBnGuns I got a new 856 three inch matte black stainless. It works fine but I still have to get live fire rounds through it at the range. I want at least 200 through it. I took about two days looking it over for any damage or defects pulling the trigger a lot looking for any cylinder rotation problems or alignment problems. I passed on one from another dealer that had timing problems stemming from the cylinder skipping chamber rotation. So if you get one inspect it thoroughly to make sure its timed properly and the screws are tight before you buy it or get another one. Mine was really dirty from the factory so they test fired it a lot. I had a bad experience with Ruger and avoid them like the plague. Maybe their revolvers are alright but I won't buy any of their autoloaders again. My experience with Taurus pistols both revolver and autoloader has always been good even their customer service. Taurus USA is now located in Georgia and they have new experienced management. Both the CEO Vorhees (Leupold&Stevens and Walther) and marketing director Osborn (Walther) and marketing manager Giddings (Athlon Outdoors) came from other gun companies so they know what they are doing. However not all Taurus guns are Taurus USA made with better quality control, some are still imported from Taurus Brazil so it pays to look them over for quality control. If you don't like Taurus then try a Rossi RP63 but it is a .357Mag. The frame size is small and maybe close to a J frame from what I am reading on it. My 856 is about as close to a J frame as you can get.

Polish the chambers and you won't even need to use the ejector rod.

@@OldCBnGuns I have a Model 36 that has one sticking chamber and I think I'm gonna polish it out and see if that doesn't cure the problem.
