  • Only had to use this tool once to help a friend out, but figured I’d make a video to show how to tighten the extractor rod on a Smith and Wesson 929, N-Frame Revolver.
Don’t wrench on the rod and the index star without case support.
Don’t use a crappy tool that can bend, kink, or deform the extractor rod. It has to move freely in the yoke.
Don’t over-tighten the rod. You can crack the index star interfacing rod, and it’ll require a gunsmith to re-time the cylinder lockup.
Use the right tools for the right job!

Thank you for taking the time to share. I have a 586 that constantly needs tightening & didn't know this tool exists.

Is it important to grip the rod as close to the spring as you can ?

I like tightening it as close as possible to where the threads start for better control. You can feel the difference, say holding a drinking straw stationary on your left hand and then turning/winding/twisting it on the far side of the drinking straw with your right hand. Apply enough torque and the whole straw will start to deform/collapse. If you move closer to the point you are turning, you have less torque being applied to the entire rod and just to the area that needs the pressure.

Thank you for sharing that! I have never seen or heard of this tool. What is your resource?

I got mine from gunsmithertools.com but they seem to be out of stock at the moment. There are a few other tools out there, Brownells has one that is just as good but make sure you get the right one for your revolver. www.brownells.com/tools-cleaning/gun-tools/action-frame-tools/extractor-rod-tool-for-sw/

Is it common for it to come loose
    My 986 does

Might want to check to see if it’s cracked and causing it to unscrew, but it could just be turning itself depending on what ammo you are using. You may also use purple thread locker, not the blue and certainly not red.

@@bluephantomfury, doesn’t appear to visually seem cracked
And I only use factory ammo, I don’t reload.
