Playing Total War games are like riding a bike, ones you know what to do, you never forget it, I certainly didnt after nearly a year without playing any of my Total War games, hell, now I more a tune with the games, because I don't want to do my rookie mistakes.
Some tips: 1) if you select a priest, everywhere your mouse cursor goes will show the percent of your religion that region has (over the lands, not the settlements). 2) You can adjust game speed on the battle map incrementally by holding down shift and then clicking the left and right arrows on the game speed controls. It will go up or down by 0.1. I like to play battles at 1.4 or 1.3, it seems more realistic whereas 1.0 soldiers move almost in slow motion. 3) if you like realistic blood and gore, try the Crimson Tide mini-mod, easy to install. Will add lots of realistic blood on living and dead soldiers as well as mud, dust and snow, greater fire effects with arrows and projectiles (corpses burning like torches for a bit) and blood spray from arrow/bolt impacts.
Making trade agreements which are then broken by going to war does harm your reputation somewhat. Any diplomatic agreement which is breeched will have that effect I'm led to believe both in what I've read and in years of game play. So choose your trading partners carefully. Definitely don't trade with two factions that are likely to go to war with each other of you're allied with one of them. Make an alliance with a faction one side of you, then another that is far removed from them. This will increase your rep over time (maintaining alliances and trade agreements). But especially important is being chivalrous with settlement capture options and how you treat prisoners....and spies and assassins.

@@abendigopeck6596 Retrofit mod + Grand Unit Add-On mod. Crimsom Tide mod for the effects. Both can be found on Total War Center forums, should still be there. If not let me know. These are mods for the main campaign game, not stand-alone total overhaul type mods. Among those I hear good things about Stainless Steel, and Fourth Age Total War (Middle Earth after events of LotR).
First total war game i ever played. Loved it then and love it now. Just got the game again on steam (lost the disks) And im having an absolute blast! :)
I still play Medieval 2 and Rome every year and have been since release date. I love Shogun 2. Empire(with mods) is good and Three kingdoms has a really great campaign. But Rome and Medieval 2 is just so much fun and has so much depth and content yet its easy to grasp it all. And most of it is trough gameplay and the game world evolving over time giving it a very open ended sand box feel and everything feels natural and so immersive:)
I played Rome, but couldn’t play any of the other ones till I upgraded my pc and bought warhammer 2. I tried playing rome 2 recently, but felt like it was a little dated now for me to enjoy it.
The graphics are for the most part also the only thing which have changed for the better. The unit collision, battle AI, city development, generals/family tree, are removed or gotten worse and the research tree feels very arcady and forced compared to the evolving world and cities where units and technology becomes available over time. The campiagn AI have also gotten way dumber and easier to manipulate and is only posing a threat because of cheating in many of the newer games. Three kingdoms seems to take major steps in the right direction though with an excellent campaign part and the older TW titles are not perfect where nothing can be changed or improved upon. I think however that surpassing medieval 2 will be hard for CA as it can be considered the Age of empires 2 or Fallout New Vegas of the TW franchise and its better to focus on other eras and topics. Like a continuation from medieval 2 set to the renaissance and pike&shot era in the 1600s could be very awesome:)

But afther they updated the Steam version to definitive edt it seems like these problems have mostly been fixed. I have had one or two crashes after battles which are annoying but I have played the steam version for many hours recently and are happy to say that it ran well. The Steam version should be safe:)

Ok, love this game! This is an old video (but then I’m old as well) and anyone that plays a game more than once learns a trick or two. One of my favorites is to use the English fleet to bypass the Scottish field army and strike for the Scottish capital transporting the main English army from York.
I sank the entirety of Scotland's army just the other day when the ai tried that trick on me. All that was left was the faction heir turned leader in Edinburgh. The pope tried to save them, but I have discovered that England doesn't really have to worry about excommunication early on .
England’s sharpened stakes ability alone is ridiculous, let alone their unit roster. England, Venice, Sicily and the Byzantines are some of my favs but every faction has such a different feel. Such a timeless 💎 of a game, will never not love it. Nice to see some other people still play even if it’s only a few of us beauties!
To think I nearly got rid of this game because my 2008 netbook wouldn't play it and it was the only computer I had for years. Now I can finally enjoy it!

Medieval 2 really is one of the best games. Sharing the first place with rome 1 with shogun 2 shortly after them. And finally after 10 years of garbage total wars that ruined the series they release a remastered version of rome 1 where they dont touch the game itself and just give the game better graphics. Best thing they could do.

I'm a total war freak, medieval 2 my fav, love the English campaign because you start in the corner, I find the campaign hardish at start, for a few turns, then I roll the AI over, but I've probably 10,000 hours in all total war games 😎😂😂😂, haven't played for a while, looking forward to watching someone else play through, good luck Warrior 😂😂👌
In the England campaign if your careful and take a boat to Ireland they somtimes have all their leaders in a boat by a vortex if they run after an attack they all die its a interesting tactic. I was bad at this game but would make my bro laugh doing stuff like that sorry for the rant
Suggestion you need to do two things keep a high garrison of soldiers in the capital and if get more trade rights the more money that flows in and keeping a high garrison at the capital prevents a decapitation strike.
@@VulcanTotalWar It can actually happen with a few units, mercs or not. "May charge without orders" is the trait you're looking for. It's quite often on elite cavalry.
Its a little rare even if the unit has the trait, and its kinda hard to notice with the chaotic battlefield and all that but pilgrims are the ones that seem to do it the most.

The papal system in medieval 2 is a pain in the ass. But I’m starting to get the hang of it. Just need to focus on building churches, maxing out priests, not attacking Christian factions unless they get excommunicated and spreading Christianity. That’s all. It’s fun to be there but also a pain.
I have found throwing money at the pope works pretty well. Just 500 or 1000 florins here and there to keep from being excommunicated. Lightning strikes with siege engines helps out a ton too, as the pope needs an end turn to waggle his finger at you.
@@Jtretta yea I agree with the blitzkrieg tactics. That’s a good idea, leaving a diplomat there and just throwing Pope a bone every 3-5turns. I will try that.
Build assassins and constantly recycle the pope when you get excommunicated. Or you can use them to eliminate the other factions cardinals and send all your priests to orthodox or islamic states to level up, and then before you know it, you will control the college and be near immune from excommunication.

Perhaps an enemy spy infiltrated your settlement. In that case you don't have the option to deploy your troops, only to start the battle. The spy also opens the gates for the enemy. To prevent it from happening, send governors with counterespionage traits and spies into the settlement.
in later games, you can choose all squad you want to move, then hold ALT and click hand hold left mouse at them then drag to wherever you want , they will move in formation you have set before :D.
Hi I started this game for the first time…. It is very difficult to gain 45 regions in 225turn….. Is there any advice ?? Now I ruled 13regions on turn 100……..
02:54 you select the "manage all cities" option in the selection menu before you start the campaign. idk if there would be a way to edit a save file after a campaign has already been started, but it might be possible.
Make sure you go into the options and turn the unit size to Ultra, or the highest. Then it will be the same. You will need to start a new campaign though.

Hopefully we can get a new medieval game soon, many things have changed since this game was released, most noteworthy the graphics xD

Ah, Medieval 2, alongside Rome and Empire, the closet the Creative Assembly got to creating Paradox-esque games.

Yes, in the files there is a discipline called Impetuous; units like knights with this discipline level can charge without orders.
When playing England always will find on medieval total war that the French will attack even when marriage alliance so it’s best to take out first

I struggle a lot with this game
Can you do the ALT trick to move all troop in formation like the later games in this series ? I tried but its seem not work at all.
I've no idea, I barely ever use it in the current games.
