I recently picked up a new 35mm film camera: the Nikon F100. Really blown away by how intuitive, ergonomic, well-built, and clean this camera is. Believe me when I say that it does not feel like a traditional film camera. This really feels like you're shooting with a camera that was made last year. If you're looking for a classic, vintage, old-school, mechanical machine, then this is not for you. This is a workhorse for both amateur and professional application with all the bells and whistles that you'd find on a DSLR. Pretty impressed that these can be picked up for ~$300 with a lens! Hope you enjoy the video :)

Different Kind of Love by Anthony Lazaro
Anyway by Kyle Cox
This is so cute. The affection between you two is palpable.
Haha thank you dude!
The best portrait behind the scenes video! Love the chilled vibe.
Thanks!
I absolutely love my F100! It’s such a great camera. I got mine at a local camera shop for like $250 with a 50mm 1.8! It was such a good deal, and I really love it
That's a steal!! Yeah I'm loving mine so far.
Hi! With the camera off, lightly spray contact cleaner on the faulty dial, just being careful not to spray on the LCD direction. After that move the dial on both directions many times. Try it now and repeat the operation a few times. My D700 had this problem and cleaning it this way it works fine now. I practice this on all my Nikons that have these dials.
This is probably some dirt inside, due to lack of use or use on places with lots of dust. Hope this tip helps you enjoy this great camera!
Exactly the reason I got the Minolta Maxxum 7. Arguably the most “modern” SLR made, it really does make shooting easy, and with slide film, an almost guarantee to get perfect exposures. I’d probably shoot it more if I didn’t have my Sigma sd Quattro, as the Quattro is about the same size and well that Foveon.
I do find that if I’m shooting 35mm film, I want something smaller, so I most often take the OM4 and the 24, 35 and 50, and it’s still smaller than the Minolta.
Great frames and it’s great to have a partner that lets you take pictures of them!
I have both, and while the Minolta A7 with a 50 is smaller and lighter than F100 with equivalent lens, they both definitely more suited for more deliberate work as opposed to walk around cameras….unless one doesn’t mind the size and weight. They also both look so modern that you can possibly be discriminated against in certain places as a professional photographer.
I've really wanted to try the OM series. They seem like great cameras. Thanks for watching the vid :)
The reasons you listed about the Maxxum 7 are exactly why I was never interested in it, I enjoy the idea of a fully manual film camera using some older lenses for that pocketability, reliability and vintage look. Although I probalby wouldn't say that if I was doing paid shoots :D
Well done Brae, I can't wait to test out my F100 also.
The box doesn't tell you to overexpose by a stop. It tells you about their 200 speed film. Same as the Fujicolor 200 box doesn't tell you to under expose by one stop for all conditions. That's why the 200 ISO line is purple and the 400 ISO line is blue. Because Fujicolor 200 has its ISO on the box in purple and Superia 400 in blue.
Loved the chilled vibe. Such a great bonding between you two. At last F100 is a workhorse.
Thank you man!
I don't have an F100 but I do have an F6 and it's a work of art. Shooting it is just like using a DSLR. It even works with Nikons CLS system and has a color matrix meter.
Loved the vibes with this one. I absolutely love Superia. Sooooo good!
Sidenote - I have a Nikon F100 and an F5 and they also have those issues with the dials.
Thank you! And really... Seems like it is a pretty common issue from what I've been hearing.
I'll take one of those if you're sellin 👀
To fix the sticking control wheel you could try some contact cleaner spayed in then working the control back and forth. It's probably dirt or corrosion from not being used regularly.
Okay thanks for the tip!
She’s A keeper!!
Indeed!!
I've used various Nikon bodies for about 60 years, and the F100 is my favorite of all time. I've never experienced your command dial issues, but it probably is relates to dirt having accumulated on electric contacts on the dial. It's probably a fairly cheap fix, but if you are feeling adventurous, and cheap, you could power off & pull the battery pack, then squirt a little contact cleaner (used by electronic service people) into the dial slot and work the dial a bit. Let it dry and try it. As for Lisa's thoughts, the F100 ain't no Contax T2, and as an owner and user of both, that is a very good thing. The F100 can be used in a program automatic mode like a T2, but the focus is faster and the lens (basic kit 50mm 1.8) is much superior to the Sonnar on the T2. The T2 is a very good camera, for a point-n-shoot, but the whole class is second rate as cameras go
she said G2 because she has one, which have SLR class lenses...
and even if she did have a T2, "whole point and shoot class second rate as cameras go" is a meaningless statement. Cameras have to do more than focus 100% on optics... anyways, gonna go shoot my Hubble Telescope, enjoy your nikon second class cameras!
I may try that contact cleaner solution! Thanks for the tip sir! I have really been liking the F100 so far. Love the variety of Nikon lenses that are available. And Alicia was referring to her Contax G2 rather than the T2. Which she might have an argument for... haha? I'm not sure. Appreciate you taking the time to check out the vid!
@@BraeHunziker Listened twice and was sure she said T2 - Guess I need to clean my ears. The G2 is a good camera with outstanding lenses.
Simply outstanding Brae! Thanks for sharing your moments with Alicia. Great stuff. As they say, it is the fight in the dog that counts. The F100 with the 50mm f/1.8G is ideal for a simple point and shoot option.
Thank you man!! 👊🏼
I have a new in box F100 from my dads portrait studios where he sold these, had some leftover stock from when everything went digital. Excited to bring some life to it soon
Wow what a gem!! That'll be very exciting
Definitely thinking about picking one up. I always like the design pattern of this generation of Nikon cameras.
It's a wonderful camera!
Oh snap you got an F100!! I got one when Nikon was getting rid of them lol, brand new on special for $749, still have it soooooo nice.
Oh no way. Would love to get an F6 brand new but the bank account won't allow at the moment 😂
what a sweet film love it
Nice video and music…the F100 is an incredible camera built like a tank! I have one …it does feel like a digital camera. Alicia is great also… don’t loose her… thanks for sharing. Be safe man..Cheers..
Yeah I liked mine a lot. Cheers dude!
The dial issue happens on the big brother to your camera as well, the F5. A tiny bit of electrical contact cleaner dribbled in the opening of the wheel may help. Had both the F100 and F5 and liked them both. One weak point on the F100 is the catch for the film door in plastic so be careful and don't just slam the film door shut. On the F5 it is metal.
Very good to know. Thanks Anthony!
I also had the same issue on my F5 also. As already said, try some contact cleaner. I have used „Tuner 600“. Maybe you will find it on Amazon etc. A few sprays into the wheel, then turn it in both directions wirhout power on and then let it dry. This should solve the problem.
And repeat it from time to time.
Bought mine new back in the day and still have it. One of the most accurate metering systems around and absolute workhorse. I need to take it out again
That's what it seems like! 🤠
Brae, I love theh story and production of this video. Really, all of your productions. Funny, I owned one of these myself, and sold mine because the rubber material that it's wrapped with was deteriorating, and getting sticky, like fly paper or something, all around the camera. One more thing to ask about for your viewers that are potentail buyers. It does have very good autofocus, and all my experience with Nikon lenses is that the colors they provide are amazing. Nice to see you both again, too!
Thank you Bob! I was also reading about the rubber getting sticky. Other than those issues, it really seems like a great bang for your buck! Thanks for the support as always 🤝
I haven't get any Contax T2 or T3 yet But I just purchased an Yashika T5 a few minutes ago. I have been looking a lot on your channel, Grainydays, Graincheck, Willem Verbeek and Bad Flashes lately.. 😍 And my credit card had big problems to say noo... 😁 Can't wait to have the camera in my hand.. Can you recomend some good films stocks?
Micke in Västerås, Sweden.
Check on the manual how to use the custom menu. The front and back dial can be enabled and disabled with the custom menus. Maybe yours are disabled. Happened to me when I just bought my F100 and after reading the manual and selecting the right values it worked.
This whole video can be posted to Betterhelp as a form of therapy :)
Hahah well thank you!!
This whole thing was an awesome production.
thank you!
I just love the grain on these photos!
Really stoked with how they turned out!
Vuhlandes would be proud of how Alicia keeps her AF clean... great vid Brae, as always!... been thinking on switching to 35mm from 120, getting more frames per roll is tempting nowadays lol
Hahah totally feel that. I've found it to be a really nice change of pace.
Music was hittin just right in this one👍
Glad you enjoyed dude!
Nice video & a beautiful model. I especially like the close-up shots of her. The F100 is the next film camera I want to purchase because it has the front and rear adjustment wheels. When working properly that allows you to use a G series lens (without an aperture ring) to shoot fully Manual. You mentioned that the G lens you were shooting will also auto focus on the F100. That's good news because my F4s will not auto focus any of my G series lenses. I had to buy a D series lens to auto focus with the F4s. Just to confirm, the F100 will auto focus G series lenses, right?
Yes I believe it should auto focus any G series lens. Cheers!
I used to long for a F100 about 10-11 years ago but never had the budget for it, while researching all the possible auction sites, stumbled upon an F90x and got it for dirt cheap... OMG were those cameras amazing, and even though I've sold the F90 about 8 years ago, I still remember it was the best handling, best to hold SLR I ever came across. F100 still seems so "modern", almost like a Leica Monochrom or Nikon DF just without the digital sensor.
Yeah I am super impressed with it overall. Definitely was a good era for Nikon film cameras
Really enjoyed this one. Love the vibe it gave off. Very chill and mellow old school video to end the week
Stay safe and keep up the good work!
Thank you my dude ❤️
You heard of Midwest film company out of whitchata Kansas, they are spooling cinematic film on 35 mm spools and you can send it back to them and they will scan it on a cinematic scanner , I got some to try , I had a F-100 I sent it to a photographer friend in Manchester England, I sent her a F-5 too , I like the F-5 for myself
Great video man. Been watching you for a while now. I've always been interested in the idea of a camera like this so it was cool to see the results you were able to get with it.
Glad you enjoyed dude!
Which lense are you using here? Thanx
7:55 the color grading in this scene is sooo nice :0
Thank you!!
Lovely shots & a nice chilled vibe. Nicely done man 👌
Thank you :)
More videos with Alicia! ❤
Noted!
I just found your channel! I’m hooked. I’d like to know more about how you color grade your video footage. Your colors are incredible. 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Thanks Kyle! I'm going to be starting a Patreon soon where I'll be posting BTS videos like that!
That’s not what the box is saying, dawg. It’s telling ya they have an ISO 200 film too lol But you do you.. Great video like always!
I got the F100's predecessor, the F90 a couple years ago at a flea market for 20€ including the 50mm 1.8, and have enjoyed it quite a bit. Especially the metering is just rock solid, and the autofocus usually gets the job done as well. As 50mm is not really my go-to, I picked up the 35mm f2 as well, which is makes it essentially an every-day point and shoot for me. But the F90 is an absolute brick, and not very ergonomic either, so I picked up the newer but smaller F80 a few months ago which does most of what the F90 does but in a lighter, more ergonomic package and I absolutely love it.
Yeah im really impressed with Nikon's lineup. Stoked to try some different lenses as well!
I am Canon shooter and I use the Canon EOS 3. At the end if you pics are good nobody cares about the camera that you used. For my workflow this camera is more than fine. Thanks for the video!!
Definitely agree. Thanks for watching!
Love this. I have a canon equivalent of the camera and it makes it so easy to take some shots while out with friends
Yeah I love it haha
Had one of these along with an F5, AWESOME CAMERAS. wish i never sold mine but the digital revolution was up and going and oh well.
Those F5's are tanks, have always wanted to try one
loved it! you should definitely get more into 35mm
Definitely going to start shooting it more!
Thankfully I haven't had issues with my Nikon's dials, though I have heard this being an issue on others. I'll just have to cross my fingers my doesn't succumb to the same problems. Though next time, I vote for Brae doing the backwards bend posing.
Hahah now we're talking Nick. Noted!
Loved the beach/harbor (ahoy) but that Point Defiance scenery is amazing.
Off topic - I randomly saw that Point Defiance has an aquarium, would you ever consider doing a shoot in one? I'm going to try for one here shortly on my end if I can get someone with me .🤔😂
Love the content, as always!
Thanks Charles!! I think that would be awesome haha! Alicia has been wanting to go anyway so might have to take some while we're there!
Hey Brae, Long time fan. Love your videos. I’ve owned an F100 for 3 years. I’ve had the plastic hooks that hold the rear door closed fail twice in that time…leading to the back opening and ruining the exposed film. My advice would be to buy a new back in anticipation, and don’t shoot those “must have” shots on this camera. Again…love your videos, keep doing what you do man.
That's what people have been telling me. Good to know. Thank you!
4:25 very beautiful bro! 👍🤘
Thank you :)
May I ask if you will do a whole series of bent Alicia on different road? With different camera setup and all?
That's a good idea!
Cool video dude, very relaxing :)
Thank you man :)
More videos with Alicia please!!
Haha noted!!
Hey Brae where do you keep finding Superia?
My lab, Speedy ePhoto has a bunch for a good price
Hey man. Cool video. What metering mode do you use?
Thanks! I was using the Matrix mode when I had this camera.
my wish came true, a 35mm video
great video as always my friend
More to come! Thanks Tommy!
Brae we got to get you on Analog Talk!
Would love to!! Shoot me an email or dm 🤠
The nikon film cameras are nice! I have an N65 I use for most of my film photos
Yeah they seem super solid!
That's some nice work Brae. Keep on going son.😊
Thank you Ron!
The F100 was kind of the sweet spot for Nikon film cameras back in the day if you didn't need the F5. Really liked the camera. As for as flakey controls, the F100 was introduced in 1999, so these cameras are 20 years old with lots of electronics and switches, so it's not surprising if they aren't reliable anymore. As has been suggested, maybe some DeOxit will help. Having spent much of my adult life in a newspaper darkroom, I don't have any nostalgia for film photography. Digital is just so much better. :)
You got lucky with the camera 😂 Love the photos 🔥
Haha I definitely did. Thank you!
Great images. If I wasn't a tight budget photographer and not saving for medium format I'd probably go for an F100 for portraits for the reasons you mentioned.
By the way, you mentioned you were shooting at f/2... stop that lens down just a little more to 2.2 or 2.5 and there's a pretty big leap in sharpness 👍👍👍
Which medium format do you think you'll go for? And thanks for the tip! Definitely will implement that next time.
@@BraeHunziker you're welcome. I use that lens on my Z6 for portraits. It's even better at 4.0 or 5.6 but if you want bokeh then 2.2 and 2.5 are significantly better than f/2.
Medium format.... probably a Mamiya C330. The Pentax 67s and Mamiya RB/RZs etc are massively out of my budget and I don't want to be restricted by fixed lenses. I see the Mamiya TLRs as a good compromise. Still get the big negatives/positives and choice of lenses that aren't extortionate. I will definitely have to budget for a prism finder for it because I'm 5'8" and one of the models I'll be shooting with regularly is 6'4" in heels.
Results of my very first time shooting slide film are here.... ellinsworthphotography.webstarts.com/film_photography (all shots taken with Minolta SRT101b and MD Rokkor 50/1.4).
Greetings from Wales UK
Aw fantastic video, beautiful images. I don’t think I’ve seen a video from you shooting portraits since I’ve been subscribed!Awesome of that seller to let ya keep that camera and refund you!
Thank you Seth! Yeah, I lucked out big time haha
This makes me want to use my first film camera from my dad which is the Canon eos100 (elan 7 here i think). I also have a colorplus loaded in there for a year and a half now that i never finished.
haha gotta get to it!!
02:54 hahaha lol
Classic lol
Some of best sunrise shots are around this area.
Definitely need to take in a Ruston sunrise soon!
Whats the tracks Name? ( song) Thx
I always thought that graph on the back was just advertising what speed films are best for certain scenarios, not that you should pull your 400 iso film to 200 and I've been shooting film since I was a kid in the 90s. 😭
Haha I think its what to rate the stock at, but I could be wrong!
@@BraeHunziker I have no clue now, lol!
this one was a bit different... still digging the vibe though 🤟 cheers
Thanks dude!
people in switzerland have that name hunziker
Yep, family is originally Swiss!
Wow cant believe im this Early??!!! Sunday just took a turn for the best.
Lets go!
nice ad in the beginning of the vid....20 seconds later another ad,great quality video
No one is forcing you to watch :)
Controversial opinion: fuji superia xtra is better than portra, imagine this beauty in medium format 🥲
I don't even disagree haha. If we got this in 120 at a decent price point... game over!
She’s got beautiful blue eyes.
Yes she does!!
Just wanted to be the first to comment. LOVE your content!!!
Thank you!!
still waiting for the bidet sponsorship
Hahaha shit 😂
The weak point of the F100 is the plastic catch of the filmdoor. Always close with the buttons pressed.
Thank you for noting this!
LOVE KATIE DOWNS
Great spot!
This is just my opinion and you can tell me to shove it. But when your girl friend is posing a certain way, forget the background, get closer to capture her expression. When her head was tilting up, I'd get very close. And if you want background to be included, have subject close to the camera and open wide that arperture for shallow depth of field.
But I take it you already know how to do that. I too am thinking of getting F100, I think I don't have patients for manual focusing.
Dials not working? At least you know where you are. Not so much if your screens aren't working. Like every second of the oldest autofocusing Minoltas from mid 80's I found...
Haha true!
The 90s film cameras have often electronic issues. Not to recommend. The 80s cameras with less electronic are more reliable.
Thanks for the tip!
NEVER slam the film door, it cannot be sourced new, and there are tons of F100s for sale without film door. The tabs holding the door are made of flimsy plastic that are prone to breaking off.
Thank you for the tip!
She looks just like Anna Kendrick
haha she gets that or Ygritte from Game of Thrones quite a bit 😂
get an 85mm portrait lens for that camera then we can talk
Your sponsoring made me cancel this vid right away
Not a big fan of affordable and accessible mental health services?
Hey Brae i have a question about the f100 if a roll doesn't have a dx code can you set the iso manually? or does it set to an auto iso if there no dx code?
Yes you can manually override the dx code
