Nothing like sitting outside of my work in my car watching this video. Peter I hope you know, you’re the reason I got into photography and you’ve helped me through a lot.
I am a programmer and not a photographer, but still, I've got goosebumps watching this video because I want to go on a journey like this and experience the joy you get through photography. Thanks for the video, Peter.
Peter, this is probably my favorite video from you. It's real and honest and it actually made me blow the dust off a 1950's 35mm Leica I had sitting doing nothing. I share your excitement in shooting film. Thank you.
I so relate, Peter. I’ve been shooting for 40 years, and EVERY SINGLE night I go to sleep, I’m thinking about what I want to shoot next. It’s the best passion in the world. And cars. Love cars.
Gina Payne from Van Life With Gina sent us your way! Said you are an inspiration!! 1st time seeing a video & she speaks truth 👍👍 Sending Aloha from Kauai, Hawaii
I've been doing street photograpy for over a year now and I honestly it feels exactly like you mentioned. The excitement and confidence you need. The eye to catch that one moment. The stroies and ofcourse all the people. It is such a beautiful and fulfiling form of art. I want to continue and grow and hopefully bring more stories of ordinary people on the streets to light.
Pete, I’ve been following you for years and you’ve been such an inspiration. I’ve been shooting photography for 15 years now and at times have lost the spark. Videos like this one pump me back up so much! You inspire many my brother. Many thanks owed to you. 🙏
Film reignited my passion for photography for ALL the reasons you touched on here! • value each picture more • learn from mistakes (some out of your control) • look at the world differently
To all the film shooters out there, that started shooting film before 2020, how does it feel to see one of the biggest yt creators in the world, enjoying the uniqueness of film? For me it's like watching myself react to my first roll! It's priceless!
i was struggling with a creatively block, trying to edit a film i’ve been working on for so long.. i was so overwhelmed with music, sfx, color grading fancy speed ramping transitions.. i was taking a break and noticed this video in my notifications i said why not clear my mind.. and this video was therapy for me.. it’s not about photography or film or exposure. it’s the fact that the video is soooo relaxing , not thinking about anything just peter talking about how he experienced the very first form of photography after years of shooting digital. it shows how he matured into the artist he is today and that’s really really inspiring seeing him go from the guy vlogging in an airport with a 1dx ii to someone who simply uses a small camera and 3 rolls of film and makes a whole video talking about how he feels towards his new hobby, far far away from the technical stuff, composition…
all film photographers around the world get a chill down their pine when Peter mentions he used to shoot a Contax 645... they are the whole grail now!!! - an worth their weight in gold!
Definitely cracked a smile. Thanks Pete. Such an inspiration. You are such a bright light. Never let anyone or anything dim that. Hope you have a wonderful day man 😁
Yooo Pet I got goosebumps watching this one, feeling the same man. I got into analog photography in lockdown time but it's something really really special.
Fantastic Peter... you said we would be seeing less of you but the quality of your videos would go up and you are delivering on the promise. Super engaging videos lately.
I recently bought a Olympus OM10. And I’m loving the experience of film photography. All the points you have mentioned Peter, I agree with 100%. Shooting film makes me more excited than digital
Film photography can take you down so many interesting paths. You can get deep in to developing your own color and black and white film, trying caffenol, darkroom printing, alternative printing processes. Large format film, tintypes... the list goes on.
This is just a silly little thing, but one thing I've picked up in my traveling with gear is the realization that I'm never going to use a whole roll of tape for something - if you take a run of tape (even if it's waaay more than you think you'll need) and just roll it up solo with no core, or around a sharpie/pen you're also packing, it saves even more space!
i just started shooting on film. and i totally fell in love!! I love the grain, the unperfection, the character, the life and the story behind a picture! its so different than all my thousands of smartphone pictures. my next step is to develop for my own. the lab is pretty expensive and right now i have to wait til 1 month!! i'm obviously not the only one with this new old hobby, haha!
Shooting film has given you a new medium for creative and evocative expression. Peter, your film photography has a nostalgic feel that resonates with a different time and place. Beautiful timeless travel imagery.
I totally agree with the point that Paris helps a lot with the contextualization of these B&W and I would love to see you rockin this camera in a city like Toronto. I'm pretty sure you would be able to capture amazing moments as well!!
Thank you for the video, I'm 54 years old and there is nothing else better than learning Photography with film. I agree, you tend to put more thought in each picture. Love BW
this video on itself, feels like it was shot on film, it is raw, direct raw conversation, storytelling 10 minutes about something so natural for this kind of art
I had the same experience Pete. I was shooting 72 pictures while in Split, Croatia and I am loving every single one of it meaning I would share them with the world!
Wow. I used to watch pm videos all the time. It’s been about 3 ish years since I’ve watched one of his videos. When he was heavily into digital, I was new to the more professional side of photography and was heavily more into the film side of photography. I to this day believe to be a true photographer through n through, you need to know the history of photography and learn how to shoot film. Learn how to plan your photos and everything. Then you can fully respect photography and where we came from. Then you have more of a passion for it. It makes you a better photographer. I love that I randomly came back to a pm video and the first thing I see is that he has switched back to a film camera and using the knowledge he has now to do even better than he did at 22, while forcing yourself to slow down and enjoy the true meaning of photography. There’s such a huge reward in developing your own film if you can and the waiting process too.
Gotta say, Pete -- I've really been loving these film videos. They're truly my favorite videos you've posted in a long time. I also jumped back in -- all in -- to film about 5 months ago, and you so accurately describe what it feels like, and to see this kind of excitement from someone with such an immense body of work like your own is refreshing. The intention and the anticipation is everything, and makes the craft of making a photograph so much more enjoyable.
I love how a lot of photographers here on youtube are doing film photography! Ive been doing it for a year and i think that it changed a lot the way i shoot. Even when i use digital, i shoot less photos but i plan more!
For anyone else just starting to get into film try the light meter app on your on your phone. It very quickly helped train my brain on the appropriate settings for each shot and probably rescued a lot of images I would’ve otherwise messed up
I will always use digital for my professional work, but film is therapeutic, intentional and just special. No spray and pray, picking the best of 40 pictures of the same thing…you take a photo, just one and put more into it
i like how you keep walking out of you confort zone and wanting to constantly learn... that's my mindset too but seeing you succeed in that is a huge push for me thank you buddy
This is growth and I’m so glad I am here for this journey. It’s amazing to see you not settle for your past niches and to push into another medium and discover the world again
Pete, your enthusiasm and professionalism shines through every time. The honesty, the uncertainty are compelling and make your experiences so relatable. Keep pushing on, excited to see where this journey takes you.
Almost makes we want to try film again. Brings back so many good memories. There was something special about having to wait for your photos to be processed.
I hope your being a new champion of film, slowing down, and even street photography brings in a new era of film shooters. Your work in Paris is amazing and you def showed the greatness of HP5.
I started shooting on film in 2nd grade in the mid 60’s, welcome to the world of keeping it simple and getting it right without the benefit of automatic bracketing or the rapid fire equivalent of having a very expensive motor drive. I often suggest that those totally new to photography start learning with pre digital era books on photography, learning, understanding and mastering the basics, since DSLRs give newbies not only many ways to get confused, but IMO way more ways to screw up an image than a SLR ever could… unless you did something dumb like forget to set the ISO or open the camera back before rewinding the film. lol, I just reached the part in this vid where you did exactly that. I really enjoy your channel, you provide a very entertaining way of presenting all that stuff I need to know to master present day photography tech. After all, back in the day, to truly be a photographer, one had to master the art of darkroom science, as well as pushing, dodging and burning. In some ways, the tech took the fun and reward out of the results. edit: today everyone basically has a camera, in the shoot on film days, it was not common at all.
Oh man, this video is so good! I’m so excited to see this growth in your work, though it’s just a little unfair your first roll was so good! I remember watching your original street photography video. This one is exactly what I wanted to see back then.
Hey Pete! I watched 1 video of yours a year ago. Felt your passion and instantly got inspired. I got camera gear and started shooting. Definitely struggled to capture a solid photo but continued to shoot and follow your journey. Thank you for giving me a new adventure!
Next step, grab a press camera and load some sheet film in 4 holders. When you realize you only have 8 shots, then it really gets intense and liberating at the same time. Love the tower black and white photo man.
Have an Olympus 35mm Point and Shoot. I have to say shooting in the streets with it is so fun. It is sharp and makes accurate exposures and people don't pay it much attention.
This video brings back 2 strong memories, walking around Philadelphia with a roll of B&W film, and getting the most amazing shots, and traveling to Paris as a teenager, and running out of film, so I had to buy postcards instead for the things I missed.
film , a medium that still has the excitement we get when we get the perfect shot in digital or in this case all the 36 exposures are focused and exposed proper , film is a medium that helps us slow down... quite .... literally . Thanx pete for the reminder amazing photos cant wait for the photos on Instagram 😍
This is why I lean towards film more than digital. I shoot digital for pro work, imagine the cost doing events today with film. Shooting film is more a mental exercise for me when I do personal work or documenting life and the mundane. It helps me pause and observe with intent and makes me contemplate how I can become the same in my everyday life.
Crazy thing with film vs digital for me is this: Digital: Wow, I nailed that shot, sharp and crisp, perfect composition. Get home and look at it on the big screen. Meh, it's ok but not as good as I thought it would be. Film: Damn, I think I mistimed that shot and I think my setting were a bit off. Get it developed, scan it and look at it on the big screen. OMFG, that looks amazing. Best photo I ever made.
"Bwaaaaaats Up!" damn... I tell ya... that absolutely brings a huge smile to my face. Interesting topic today "Vlack and White in Paris"... incredible.
I would suggest the presence of imperfection and error is part of the art and appreciation of the moment. Life is not always precise and in focus, so these moments on film are a great analog for that moment of imperfection frozen in time.
It is about seeing more out of your environment - like meditation in the process your walk. I am definitely enjoyed going back to film - I know more than I did when I was a kid. So train the brain to slow down and intentional.
Thank you so much for making very clear at the beginning of the video what street photography is and what it is not. Especially nowadays when everyone calls himself a streetphotographer but takes photos of buildings. Thank you so much
loooove this 🤍 that is my fav kind of photography...capturing life real + raw- no posing just snapping what's there in that moment- Such am incredible feeling. Enjoy!!!
"Keep learning the craft that is photography." So. Much. This. I've immersed myself in what I consider to be the top in their genre. (PM included 😁) and I've just been watching, and taking images of my own to practice the LR/PS techniques, trying to make them somehow my own. Been working on my compositions too. Making them tell more of a story. Making them breathe with life, I am developing (hehe) a new type of relationship with my subjects. (none of which, speak) Youve upped the game in 2023, man. Your work is maturing. Your style is evolving. I for one, love it. It's massively inspiring to folks like me, to see someone of Peter McKinnon's caliber can still be learning. Thanks, man. I appreciate you.
I love shooting film. The first roll I shot was when I first moved to LA and it was such a scary, hectic and crazy fun time and that roll of film has some of my favorite photos. They’re not great photos, but they’re my favorite photos because I specifically was shooting raw moments in film. I need to shoot more film. Godspeed Peter. Thank you for your videos
There's an image that I took of my mum, on a Zenit EM, Ilford HP5, that I processed myself and and printed on a big A3 sheet in a darkroom when I was still in college. It's my most treasured image I've taken. Thank you for reminding me about it!
I love shooting film. It takes patience and practice. And on those light leaks you had in a few photos were the exact definition of a beautiful mistake.
Nothing like sitting outside of my work in my car watching this video. Peter I hope you know, you’re the reason I got into photography and you’ve helped me through a lot.
Thank you! I appreciate it!!
That’s the most relatable comment 😂
Excellent story! Love bnw !
Lol, I just got off my lunch break and am doing the same thing 😂
@@IamPhant0m I pulled into work and I looked at my phone and was like thank god I got here early
I am a programmer and not a photographer, but still, I've got goosebumps watching this video because I want to go on a journey like this and experience the joy you get through photography.
Thanks for the video, Peter.
bro we literally living the same life😂😂
Peter, this is probably my favorite video from you.
And cars. Love cars.
Sounds like a great life lesson; slow down, be intentional, make choices wisely! Cheers Pete!

Black and white photography is the heart of photography. I am a bnw photographer.
Pete, I’ve been following you for years and you’ve been such an inspiration. I’ve been shooting photography for 15 years now and at times have lost the spark. Videos like this one pump me back up so much!

Great to see you finding a new Mojo Pete!!
Pete discovers snap photography. This is like a lambo driver discovering the bicycle.
Yeah you're right, the intro made me smile 🤌🏽
We are back!! This is why I started watching this channel! More of this pelase, Peter. Photography…
I'm not even a photographer but I really really appreciate the medium of film. There's something about it
It's better than digital
You are the real goat!
i’m so thrilled for the new era of Peter’s videos. i absolutely love the new style and the new office
Loving these black and whites and the natural film grain on it... and that shot of the Eiffel Tower was just splendid! 🖤🤍
To all the film shooters out there, that started shooting film before 2020, how does it feel to see one of the biggest yt creators in the world, enjoying the uniqueness of film? For me it's like watching myself react to my first roll! It's priceless!
2020? Try 1975, LOL. How do I feel? meh who gives a ratz arse

That did in fact, make me crack a smile.
Been here since the beginning.
Still here...
Will always be here.
Good stuff PM...after 3 decades, I share your "still learning" spark. Its what keeps us engaged. Have a great weekend my friend...
Photography is truly one of those crafts that you can never get tired of.
Fantastic Peter... you said we would be seeing less of you but the quality of your videos would go up and you are delivering on the promise. Super engaging videos lately.
Nothing hits like just sitting back and hearing pete talk, the music, the content, the love for the medium...it all hits different!
As a medium format Hasselblad type guy I gotta say these film vids have been great.
I recently bought a Olympus OM10. And I’m loving the experience of film photography. All the points you have mentioned Peter, I agree with 100%. Shooting film makes me more excited than digital
Pete! I can't even begin to tell you how pumped I am that you're diving back into film. So stoked.
Absolutely loved the ambient music in this!

Exactly ! Film photography makes you think before you click the shutter bottom, You should do some experiments with film like the way I do.
i just started shooting on film. and i totally fell in love!! That Big Pilot is looking 🔥
I hate this video's vibe. It pulls up my insecurities, anxieties, sorrow, old memories. I don't know why. This vibe took me into long past times🥺❤️
Shooting film has given you a new medium for creative and evocative expression. Peter, your film photography has a nostalgic feel that resonates with a different time and place. Beautiful timeless travel imagery.

𝙈𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙞 𝙋𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧.
love the struggle and the richness of the transition to this years pete!
Good to see you doing videos on film photography! Great work
For anyone else just starting to get into film try the light meter app on your on your phone. It very quickly helped train my brain on the appropriate settings for each shot and probably rescued a lot of images I would’ve otherwise messed up
You found a way to reboot your series in a way. I can feel your excitement.

I love that I got into film photography around the same time. Feels like I’m learning with Pete and I love the community 😁
glad to know you are getting to photography for yourself and as far as i remember your wife planted seed to realise this. really happy.
Almost makes we want to try film again. Brings back so many good memories. There was something special about having to wait for your photos to be processed.
I remember shooting black and white film back in the day and had my own darkroom in my bedroom. Developed my own film and prints. It was so much fun.
I feel like your in such harmony with life in this exciting chapter of your life! Love the content!
I hope your being a new champion of film, slowing down, and even street photography brings in a new era of film shooters. Your work in Paris is amazing and you def showed the greatness of HP5.
Glad you're now into film photography! Keep it coming! 👍
I started shooting on film in 2nd grade in the mid 60’s, welcome to the world of keeping it simple and getting it right without the benefit of automatic bracketing or the rapid fire equivalent of having a very expensive motor drive.

Dude, seeing you saying “P-Whatsup” with log hair again just gives me such great throwbacks to the old days. Keep it up man!!!
Have an Olympus 35mm Point and Shoot. I have to say shooting in the streets with it is so fun. It is sharp and makes accurate exposures and people don't pay it much attention.
This channel gets better and better😏 But Pete, you push to be better, and that alone is going to propel you further in this art and in this life🥰
Pete, i've watched you video on mute, and it still blew me away!! You have incredible story telling skills!!
This video brings back 2 strong memories, walking around Philadelphia with a roll of B&W film, and getting the most amazing shots, and traveling to Paris as a teenager, and running out of film, so I had to buy postcards instead for the things I missed.
Nothing made me happier today than getting a notification for this video. Thank you Pete.
film , a medium that still has the excitement we get when we get the perfect shot in digital or in this case all the 36 exposures are focused and exposed proper , film is a medium that helps us slow down... quite .... literally . Thanx pete for the reminder amazing photos cant wait for the photos on Instagram
😍
that start with "phhwaatss upp everybody" was nostalgic man❣❣
This is why I lean towards film more than digital. I shoot digital for pro work, imagine the cost doing events today with film. Shooting film is more a mental exercise for me when I do personal work or documenting life and the mundane. It helps me pause and observe with intent and makes me contemplate how I can become the same in my everyday life.
What a video, truly love it. So inspiring!
Good for you Peter. The excitement you're feeling is genuinely palpable through the screen. Really happy for you! Can't wait to see more!
Crazy thing with film vs digital for me is this:
Digital: Wow, I nailed that shot, sharp and crisp, perfect composition.
That eiffel tower photo is gorgeous! I actually audibly gasped.

I would suggest the presence of imperfection and error is part of the art and appreciation of the moment. Life is not always precise and in focus, so these moments on film are a great analog for that moment of imperfection frozen in time.
Love the grainy blank n white photos
Im starting photography, actually took my first ones today and your channel is the reason im starting! Keep up the amazing stuff man

Thank you so much for making very clear at the beginning of the video what street photography is and what it is not. Especially nowadays when everyone calls himself a streetphotographer but takes photos of buildings. Thank you so much
I think its the process thats great, not the photos themselves. Its awesome when we get excited to do something, just keep going.
Umbrellas somehow make every great picture even better. Amazing shots dude
I know what you mean...and I am loving every minute of it. Got a Pentax K1000 for my birthday. Best birthday gift EVER!
loooove this 🤍 that is my fav kind of photography...capturing life real + raw- no posing just snapping what's there in that moment- Such am incredible feeling. Enjoy!!!
