Quick tip: If you get your film developed by Photoworks SF (on Market Street in The Castro) the negatives come in PrintFile archival sleeves as standard.
I used lens wipes in college and it is deceptively easy to damage the very thin lens coatings. Use a clean wipe or microfiber sparingly and very lightly. Emphasis on very lightly. If dust in tight places is a pfoblem, use compressed Canned air---being careful NOT to shake or agitate the can.
No, NO, NO!!! Sorry to rain on your parade (commission?), but NEVER use those "soft release" things! They stick up like big red targets, begging to be hit and break parts inside your camera! In my 40+ career fixing cameras, I can't tell you how many hundreds of cameras I've seen disabled because of this one "accessory"! A camera's release button is specifically designed and adjusted to minimize or prevent this kind of damage, but even is a case, these buttons can magnify the potential for damage.
Most important besides the obvious camera, lens and film? A filmscanner, cotton gloves, blower, and maybe a film rewinder. That film archive is really neat. Going to buy some now.
Personally I hate cotton gloves. Or maybe just the ones I get in my neck of the woods. In any case, the ones I tried have caused me tons of issues with lint coming off them and I either have to really go to town with the rocket blower or the clone stamp in PS. I ended up handling my negs either bare-handed (*gasp*) touching only the sides or using rubber gloves. Way less of a pain in the butt, especially when making prints.
Here is a good advice on how to clean the lens. Use the rocket blower first to blow off any debris on your lens and than you would use those Zeiss wipes. But yet I would use the Zeiss liquid cleaner and spray it on a Q-tip after using the Rocket Blower. I would wipe the lens with the Q-tip in a circular format than I would use a dry Q-tip to wipe it off. I would recommend using archival gloves so no oils and dirt from your hands would get on the cleaning materials and lens. I would finish it off with a Zeiss lens cloth so their won’t be any smears on the lens. I highly recommend to put on the B+W UV Nano filter on the lens so the dirt and dust would be on the filter rather than on the lens. Peace Flood!
Those things are genuinely useful. They’re things that help you to grow and progress as a film photographer, so I wouldn’t have called them ‘accessories’ in the first place. I agree with you though :)
I really love film photography, but it's really complicated to shoot film on Brazil. First of all: we don't have many film options. (Only Kodak ColorPlus). Second: it is ridiculously overpriced, since from film prices to the development cost. But my love for film keeps me at that hobby, even with all of those obstacles.
A light meter should be the "main event" if you're shooting film. It's essential when shooting film. But wait, don't cameras have a built int light meter? Yes but they're not as accurate or calibrated like a handheld meter. It's amazing that a lot of newer generation photographers severely down play or don't even use light meters now and shooting film, it's more essential to have one com paired to digital.
bnkrazie There’s an app for iPhones called lux that’s basically a really great free light meter. Once you get the hang of it though, I just kind of shoot intuitively.
I tried Lux to find the app doesn’t give an accurate reading compared to my Sekonic L-858D-U meter. Lux is about 1 to 1 1/3 stops under which your whites will be mid grey just like your camera’s meter. If you don’t work professionally, especially commercial photography then you’ll be fine. For people who wants and needs the best and optimal image then spend the money on buying a light meter. Lux is only a reflective meter, the same as most cameras while with a dedicated light meter could have reflective, incident and flash capabilities.
@@christianminnetian9937 That is only useful outside with no clouds. Even though I mentioned the most expensive lightmeter, I have used and currently own others like the L-358 and the L-398A.
bnkrazie if you noticed the image on display when metering with Lux, it seems like it will try and protect the highlights (which makes sense as it’s using a digital camera on the iPhone). If you point it down at the shadows, it opens up but I’d still add another stop on top. So if you’re framing the scene as you’d shoot it, I’d go plus 2.5 stops from that reading with colour negative film. I used it on my holiday and tried the spot meter function too but I’m not sure how it rates against an incident meter.
I’m looking at getting the Nishika n8000... it’s going to be my first film camera so I’ve been watching so many film yt videos. I’m glad I came across your channel!
Jvpes, the first wood on your bessa is caled Freijo ( fre-i-jo)... i sent him a piece of it with othe amazon wood, its f* nice wook used to build houses and last FOREVER
Excellent comment. If you feed the anchors through the camera eyelets (without the split rings), you're also saving the finish on your camera. There are so many beautiful camera's out there where there is brassing just around the split ring or where a metal clasp on the strap rubbed against the camera body -- such a waste. Peak Design solves the issue. PD is expensive. For those who still use a split ring, make some simple leather protectors to wrap around the split ring. There is no reason for metal to ever touch metal on these fine instruments.
I have an addition to the list: a good light meter. My personal recommendation is the Gossen Spot Master. Awesome piece of kit. Admittedly, it is a bit on the bulky side. If you don’t need spot metering, a Sekonic L308 is a safe bet as is a Gossen Lunasix. Otherwise, just one remark: Dude, the audio levels are way out of whack in this video. The music is much to loud.
Whatever you do, do NOT put electrical tape or normal Gaff tape on your camera! They both leave super sticky residue (what they're designed to do) once you peel it off. DO USE Matte Gaff tape, its designed to not leave any residue where it's stuck onto, but not forever...
Nice enthusiastic guy. The wooden widget (for which this video is actually an infomercial!) is hardly critical and will not help anyone make better pictures 😉
Hey King Jvpes, just found your channel and I really like the information you are putting out. I learned photography in the middle 70's, (yes I am old), I was off photography in the 90's until about 6 years ago. Watching you is like a mini refresher course, has no idea what I forgot. There is one thing I that I use on my cameras without the information window for the end of the film box and that is plain 1/2" cloth First Aid tape and a fine Sharpie. Just a small piece on the back with the ISO, Exposures and type of film, (color/B&W). Something simple and I never have to guess what I am shooting with when I have multiple cameras with me. Thanks for the information and look forward to seeing more in the future.
Small tip to cleaning ur lens: use tissue paper that you have not touched before(as long as ur fingers touch whatever ur using to clean ur lens ur just rubbing oil on ur lenses) and wipe in circular motion and then use a blower to blow any remaining particles
Hi, I recently got a Minolta X-700 and also got one of the shutter buttons in this video. Do you know if you’re able to replace the shutter button on the Minolta X-700?
Nice vid man. I’ve got a Pentax MX with a viewfinder that looks a little dirty in the corners. Wasn’t sure if it was the focusing screen or the viewfinder (the central focus point seems clean). You reckon that dust blower will help?
Maybe because those wipes are bad for the environment...? Maybe not but that was my first thought because makeup wipes are becoming an issue for the environment.
According to his logic it covers the brand names and makes the camera less prone to being stolen because people won't know the model and thus know how expensive it is. But this theory is flawed because if I'm a thief I might be more prone to look for cameras with tape now. Idk. I feel if someone's going to take your camera they'll take it. I doubt there are photographers (because they'd be the only ones to know a camera's worth) out there going around stealing cameras. 🤷🤷🤷
Levi Gatherwright motor drives are dope! Though I wouldn’t have one on my camera all the time. For portrait shoots or events a motor drive would be beneficial but if I’m out shooting street I’d rather stick to the body only just so I’m not lugging around an extra weight
I don't agree with lens wipes, I know this is a contrvisual topic, espeically in the high end film industry. But I personally would never use wet wipes on any lens, I personally think KimTech kimwipes are the way to go, they are dry wipes, doesn't damage coating (since those cost more that the glas itself).
Hey, wondering if you can help. If you pause at 4.13, you see the universal clip, then you have the ring, which is threaded through the last metal piece which is holding the strap there connecting it to the camera. Mine just broke and I’m halfway though a roll. It looks like I’ll need to finish the roll, open it up and then perhaps I’ve lost a piece which holds this metal bit in place? Please help/advise 🙏🏼
Does that universal camera strap work on older tlr cameras? I know mine has a little nub with a little indentation going through the middle so most straps aren't even compatible with it
I recently bought a canon AE-1 program off eBay. One of the first things I noticed is the aperture ring, when turned, doesn’t move the blades inside the lens. Is my lens broken or am I doing something wrong?

Hi everyone, so i just had my film processed and it came out blank. What could be the cause of this? I probably didn’t put the roll correctly. But i had light leaks so i put electrical tape, would that be a cause too for a blank film?

Hello there. Following your great video, I bought a shutter button from the The MoreGooder. It's been several weeks now and I still didn't receive the package (I live in Canada). I sent a message a couple of days ago, they have a section dedicated to that. Still no answer... I begin to think that this guy takes the money and doesn't send the thing...
Yo idk if you remember me but i asked you about the song that plays at 0:46 hahaha! still cant find it on his soundcloud man and i really wanna use it for a project in mind
GANG Drop a BIG THUMBS UP on the video if you enjoyed it! Also, what are some other dope film photography accessories? 🤔🤔 #MInoltaGang
Started film photography recently and really learnt a few things through your videos. Great job!
I know it is pretty off topic but do anyone know of a good website to stream newly released tv shows online ?
I have loved film photography for more than 40 years and it warms my heart to see a much younger person like you discover its beauty.
me too :p
The universal clip is called the lobster clasp.
Eric Wilson yesss thank you! Completely forgot the technical name lol
Quick tip: If you get your film developed by Photoworks SF (on Market Street in The Castro) the negatives come in PrintFile archival sleeves as standard.

Good advice. I have some vintage glass and I was wondering whether I should rub then lightly with lens wipes...
Great video.
I started watching your videos 2 weeks ago and let me tell you chanels like this make Photography better!

I recommend a lens pen over wet wipes for cleaning lenses. The brush is invaluable.

"go ahead"
You are killing the meaning of this phrase, sir.
Ya, wish he'd go ahead and quit say "go ahead."
Hahaha I never noticed how much he used the phrase but who cares ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thanks I can't stop noticing it now 😭

men I love your videos. content is dope and the ambience music is always fire.
This is useful as I started film photography 2 weeks ago
I love your energy man. Awesome tips too. Keep it up!
Just joined the Minolta gang. Can't wait to go shooting with my "new" X-700
Just bought myself a secondhand Pentax MX,fisrt film camera!good to find your video!
Ive used black felt single sided tape before for light leaks and cut it to size works a magic and they sell at your $2 store just my tip bro
I prefer gaffers tape, its expensive but it leaves no residue after removal. Even better would be to replace the foam tho.
some great accessories!
great insight on how to use them
thanks for sharing this with us!
Awesome dude! Love your energy and content. I am going to check out those soft shutter buttons for sure. Love from Canada 🇨🇦
Great channel 👍 Greetings from Norway 🙂

John Roberts that’s a way to stay safe! Haha awesome!
I think I saw the Kodachrome box ... Will you do photographic experiments with Kodachrome photographic materials? Regards! 👍👍👍👍👍

When you’re still waiting for the Nikon f3 vs canon f1 video to drop for 3 months
Back yet again with another banger 🤧
BANGERS only brodie!
As someone who works with gaff tape, it is very expensive. A 1” x 20’ roll is about $30
Love the video, mate 👍

Some film cameras have a special slot where you can put part of thr film carton! Both my minolta xg-1 and mamiya m645 have them :)
For your archived negatives, you can actually get binders that help keep out dust and dirt. They look like giant vhs cases.
well done thank you for the pointers :)
Shutter release cables are great for long exposure and taking photos subtly !!!!!
That website!! Camera, bike, and coffee stuff. I'm sold
Congrats on 18K homie! 🙏🏽

Hi, I recently got a Minolta X-700 and also got one of the shutter buttons in this video. Do you know if you’re able to replace the shutter button on the Minolta X-700?
So do you send your film to a place to develope it and then when it comes back scan it yourself?
Thanks for the tips 📷
Love the into very classic bluesy

I sent him that angelim and purple heart , both amazon wood from brazil, and he did an amazing job with those!

I get the lens wipes at the dollar store :P
Yu gi oh cards oh hell yeah
I will be into film camera next year, but they are so expensive, can you suggest a cheap but worthy film cam? New subscriber here 😊
Hey Jvpes! As always, nice content!!! I have a suggestion for your future vid. Can you tackle on the Zone System for exposure? ;)
Duct/electrical tape: I never understood that. It’s not like covering the brands will make the camera more discreet. Or am I missing something here?

Dope Voigtländer!
Its sooo nice
Would that shutter button fit a canon ae-1?

Bastien Rossi thank you! Also which strap my good sir?
You welcome ! I talked about the one we see at 3:50 ;) Keep going on ! Next step I wish you could try the Hasselblad XPAN !
Does that universal camera strap work on older tlr cameras? I know mine has a little nub with a little indentation going through the middle so most straps aren't even compatible with it
Nice video as usual. But does Gaffer tape leave a sticky residue when you take them off? It's a pain in the butt wiping that off.
Nikil Jonathan electrical tape, yes
Gaffer tape, no they won't
Gaffer tape and electrical tape are very different though. What you showed is electrical tape. Gaff tape is a fabric tape that does not leave residue.
I recently bought a canon AE-1 program off eBay. One of the first things I noticed is the aperture ring, when turned, doesn’t move the blades inside the lens. Is my lens broken or am I doing something wrong?

are they shipping to germany?

that kodachrome in the intro tho. Are you processing it black and white or paying the 20+ bucks to have that one guy do it in color?
