I have this plant and waited till I could get it for super cheap, I found mine at a Fred Meyer here in Idaho for 8.99, and then another one on clearance at Walmart for 3.00, I potted them together to make a fuller plant and took two of the babies and potted them up separately so I have a whole other plant. They are both doing very well, and growing many new leaves all the time. I would love for mine to have that tree like shape, and maybe as this one gets bigger I can get it to look like that, I love the ones that have a long stem with the babies growing all down it. Thanks for sharing this video so nice to see that you can get brave and chop off the top and it will grow babies from that part, and then it propagates easily.
3 bucks is a steal! It took a while for me to muster up some courage lol, but I finally did it! Really glad I did! It feels like Since I did that, mine grew a lot faster... Hoping yours will also mature so it will give you the long stem soon :)!!!
My pilea didn't start growing the cool stem till it's second year but I had bought it from an Etsy shop when it was very tiny. Now it's doing well growing new leaves and getting taller. No babies yet though. I think the key to these is being patient while it establishes itself. 👍💖🌿
Thank you so much for all the info, I too just bought a TINY plant, and it is growing nicely and I just saw one baby coming thru from the base and now I am thinking mine needs to be repotted because the container is SO small and I feel like it could benefit from another inch of soil lol... So exciting to see these plants can be easily propagated too.

Awww, thanks so much for the kind words! Wow, 3 bucks is a steal! You're right about the price - it has really brought me a lot of joy! Also, I've successfully propagated a couple of the petioles, so I have multiple plants now and can cost average the initial price (tee hee!!)

OK so I chopped mine the day I left the comment to you and I see a root growing already!! Thank you for making me brave enough to do it!! Just wanted to let you know it went well 😍

The top that you chopped looks like it’s good to go into soil now. Your Pilea babies grows so different than mine. I have the same elongated version like yours (I’ve seen short stubby, cham packed full of leaves versions) anyhoo, my babies that I harvest are always growing up like through a root that’s right under the surface. I need to harvest about 3 more, gotta move some other plants out of my 3” azalea terra cotta pots. I wish I had bought more at this one nursery, rats 😠. They are the perfect size for the babies 😝. I haven’t had any luck propagating from the leaf. Really good luck with other Peperomia’s so it’s a 🧐🤔. Thanks for the video, it really helps showing your plant from before, and now, it definitely makes the video more interesting to me. I know it must be a editing headache 😝. Oh btw, never thought to behead the mother plant. 🤔....................Happy Planting 💜🌺🌸

That is hilarious, you’re right it was a beheading!! I am glad I did, because I got like 3 to grow in it’s place. I found some 3” nursery pots at the dollar store. I love pilea. I just started off with planting and watch a bunch of videos and bought a small one at a mom and pop shop, and I thought it was expensive for the size about $20. I checked the roots and it was badly root rotted so I was very disappointed and not happy. I didn’t want to deal with going back and just tried to save it instead so I got rid of all the roots and put it in another pot with fresh fast draining soil and a couple weeks later it perked back up. So don’t worry about all the pretty and healthy roots you have in the water. It will be fine =). Thanks for sharing this video. What an interesting pilea you have there with baby pups on the top wow.
Aww thanks Doanh!! I’m sorry to hear about the root rot ☹️. That’s actually one of the reasons why I’m always hesitant to add new houseplants - they’re not always in the best condition when you bring them home. The pups I harvested in this video are actually whole new plants now 🤗. Thanks for watching!!
@@Botanibabies That’s amazing to see! I love plants that spit out pups, so easy to propagate and fun to watch them grow. At least you have tons of new plants from all that propagating =).
I've killed about three of these and I'm heartbroken because I love it I love the pileas and I would love to have one but I don't want to kill another one
Thank you for sharing your tips for growing and propagating this wonderful plant. Can you please let me know what soil / soil combination you used when repotting the plant ? 🙏❤️
Hi Vikky!! This is an interesting plant, because everyone seems to have such good luck with it whereas mine goes through ups and downs. I keep trying to move it around to see where it might thrive best, but just when I think it is in a good spot, the leaves start to look a bit thin... I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for both our plant babies!!!
Botanibabies ! I read an article on pinterest that said they need filtered water, maybe is the water, also the dont like high temperatures, is between 50-70F
Yikes! Lol i got mine with three mother plants and 3 well established babies for $15 lol I now have 3 seperate Mother plants with the babies growing together like their mothers before them. Yours is stunning!
Taevian's World of Reptiles! That is a bargain!! Yeah I don’t think I will ever pay that much for a plant again lol. It’s kind of like how the raven zz plants were a while ago. Now, I saw a whole bunch at my Fred Meyer!
I got mine a few weeks ago for £15 and I have found 7 babies in the same pot and an eighth poking out from the bottom hole in the pot... Due to the quarantine I haven’t been able to get any small nursery pots or soil available online.. but as soon as I can, I’ll have 9!!
Very nice video...Love your voice too. You said in this video that you will link the video of water propagation & one more video...but I cant find any links. Would appreciate if you cound include as said. thanks
I bought two tiny sad looking specimens at Whole Foods a few years back…they are still alive but have never really done well….then this week, I found 2 nice sized healthy ones (6” pots) at my local grocery store for $6.99 each, both with several babies too.
It’s amazing how much cheaper they are now 😭! I’m sorry to hear the wholefoods ones haven’t done well. You definitely aren’t alone, mine have taken a turn for the worse, unfortunately. I hope your new ones will do much better! ❤️🪴
@@Botanibabies I don’t get it, these plants are supposed to be easy to care for. I repotted my Whole Foods ones a few weeks ago, and they look a little better, and yesterday I repotted the new ones because the soil didn’t look like it had enough perlite. While repotting the new ones, I took out some of the babies and potted them up too. I think I’m going to put them all outside for the summer.
I know right? I’ve been considering repotting them, because I’m starting to suspect that the soil might be bad. I’ve moved them around to get more and less light, but to no avail, their leaves are thin and yellowish ☹️
@@Botanibabies do you live in a humid climate? Try putting them in a semi shady spot outside. Also, I’ve stopped watering with tap water - too many chemicals.
Enjoyed your video! I love these plants too! I have propagated several babies that grew from the soil and put them in tiny pots (2-2.5in) because i planned to gift them. Although I've managed to keep them alive, they don't seem to be growing...not sure if it's because it's winter or because the pots are too small! Any thoughts? BTW, I too have discovered my water meter to be a complete game changer with ALL of my plants!!!! I also bought a similar meter that also checks the light and PH! My son also bought me a meter that connects to my iPhone (for my difficult to keep alive, Gardenia!!). One thing that I wasn't sure about, is how you beheaded your plant....did you literally cut the stem a few inches below the top and reroot? Seems like you did it to enhance the growth of the base plant (not to propagate but I was a little confused?!?)
kerri dube hi there!! So in regards to the babies you harvested and potted in tiny pots, did you root them in water first? As long as they’re not dying, they may just be focusing on developing roots if you directly planted them into soil. However, I do find that the roots of this plant grows really fast. I would check the bottom for roots if you’re concerned about it outgrowing it’s small pot. So when I beheaded my plant initially, I took a few inches worth. I then took petioles off on the bottom of that cutting and then placed it in water until it developed roots. I then planted it and is now thriving on its own 🤗. I also got a couple of the petioles to root! Those are still alive but have not shown evidence of new growth. I hope that helps!!
@@Botanibabies Thanks for your quick reply! Regarding the babies, since they sprouted from the soil, they already had some roots. i just took them out and replanted them in their own tiny pots. They seem happy so maybe I just have to be patient for them to grow larger! I'd like to gift them but I want to make sure they're fairly established so I give them the best chance at survival! Thanks for the additional info on the beheading- lol. My plants haven't grown as tall as yours so I'm not ready to do that but I was very curious:)
Yes, a while ago when they were still expensive here, I saw a lot of instagram plantparents that had so many of them and said they grew like weeds over there lol. I was so jealous!! They are cheap here now since they are so easily propagated. I should have just waited, but you know, I had to be in the cool kids club and bought it when it was still expensive :( lol
I was able to find one with 3 mother plants and about 3 babies around them in my local grocery store for $9.99! I had to take it, my partner thinks it looks like a alien lol i love the full round look the leaves give. I love your pot! Where is it from? It looks beautiful in it! The greenish pot shown in the first picture of it you show talking about lion king lol
That's amazing! Are you going to separate them? That is definitely an awesome deal. LOL yes, they do have an alien like characteristic with their disc leaves, don't they? As for the greenish pot, I bought that from either ross or marshalls many years ago! Those are the best place to buy them in the spring (they don't carry many pots other seasons since their inventory is seasonal). Thanks for watching :)!!
Loved the video! What kind of soil did you use when you repotting your plant? I have two 2inch plants and I will need to repot but dont know what soil to buy or use.
Thank you for the video. Very useful. But pilea is not of peperomia family. Its nettle family, while peperomia is pepper family. Peperomioides is due do similar looking leaves with peperomia polybotria.
well! I went and took all the leaves of mine except one. it was dying, its been recently repotted. the leaves were translucid like you mentioned and very long and droopy. im hoping cutting those off and the repotting will help it grow! I have also ordered a soil moist meter. fingers crossed!. ( for this plant how moist should it read before watering? ) thank you!
It’s super cool 😎 just watching this video I cut mines 😜 let see what gonna happens 🙏🏼🙏🏼. So I think you should cut the long stems and makes it rooted, so all the babies growing in the pot nice looking. But don’t remove the babies 🌱💚🍃🌱💚🌱🍃💚🌱🍃💚
I was so tempted to cut down to the base of the main stem, but then I thought maybe I shouldn't because the color of the stem was no longer that reddish pink color that newer growth has? I feel like "older" stems take longer to root. Excited for your plant!! I wish we could post pics in the comments so I can see your pant's progress!
Botanibabies ! Thank for replying to me!! And yeah it will be great if we ca put the pic on the comments, let see my plant 🌱 evolution later on 😍🤷🏽♀️, by the way I like all your videos and your plants 🌱 💚🌱💚🍃
Hi I really enjoyed your video. I too paid a fortune for mine Ive had it about 2 1/2 years. I have never gotten a baby in the pot ever. I kind of a new growth on top. Mine is long like yours even taller about 2 feet tall and skinny. I have repotted it and am trying to get the courage to cut it. Can I leave the bottom in the pot and hopefully it will continue growing and maybe have a baby.; And the the top that I cut off I should put it in water to root? I live in Florida and mine is in a East window I could move it to a more sunnier spot do you think it would help.??? Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
Hi Marley! I totally understand your hesitation to cut the plant. It's really scary considering how hard to find it was for the longest time. If you do decide to cut it, just make sure to leave some leaves at the base so that it can have an opportunity to grow back. There needs to be leaves on the main stem in order to absorb sun and generate energy to produce more leaves at the base. And yes, you will want to stick the cutting into water to get it to root. Hopefully you'll have 2 plants soon! Also, there should be pups growing from the soil. It likes to spread its roots and grow up from the soil :). Good luck!
Thank you so much for answering back. Thank you so much for the tip on leaving leaves on the Pilea on the bottom. I would have taken them off. So glad I saw your answer. I did take some leaves off. Shared some with a friend and will try to root some for me and another friend or two. Thank you
Hello! My plant is having the same issue with translucent new leaves - how did you fix yours? I am in England so not very sunny, I have it on the windowsill. Thanks :)
I just bought a 2 inch pot for 3:99 at Hannaford $ it looks healthy and full and I’m wondering if I should plant in a 4 inch pot cus the pot is so small after what u said I’m wondering if I should get a second for the price and I can put in different spots to see what they like better . Tfs 🌱
Sierra Baby that is a fantastic deal! I suppose it depends on how much space you have lol. They’re also VERY easy to propagate! But for $3.99 that’s hard to pass up the 3rd 🤣
Hmm, I live in İstanbul and it's not extremely hot/sunny here, I put the plant to a south facing window, and all the babies turned to red, so I decided to take it to a little shade. I wonder if you were keeping your pilea next to a window? Or is red leaves okay, just like succulents?
That is so interesting that you mention that. I recently placed mine closer to an east facing window and it has been very sunny in the last couple of days in seattle and noticed that the stems of the petioles have turned red towards the top of the plant!! I have no idea what that means... for now, I will keep it there and see if it grows faster or if the leaves burn. I'm sorry to hear about your plant, hopefully it can come back from the burning :(
@@Botanibabies Aw thanks! It's doing better at shade, I think the glass might have a bit of "magnifying glass" effect, making sun rays accumulate together. Also sun burnt leaves are growing just as healty as the normal ones so far but still I will keep the little guy away from the windowstill. Thanks for the reply and informative video!
I don't know why this was ever considered rare; you can find them everywhere--or could--I see them all the time in Home Depot for just a couple of dollars for a 4 inch pot.
Yes, I remember looking for this plant at all the nurseries in and around Seattle at least a year and a half ago and having no luck except at Molbaks Nursery. I was floored to find they were selling baby pilea's for $40+ .
have you ever had curly leaves on your pilea perperomoiodes? Mines gone a bit curvy, I thought it might be a light issue, but it has a grow lamp! The newer growth seems to be curlier than the rest. Any tips?
jdsalingernerd actually mine are curly too! Well more so wavy and not thick and flat like other pictures. Not really sure I have the answer since I keep it in a very sunny location and I live in Seattle so I don’t get much sun to begin with. Do you think you’re gets too much light?
When you repotted it did you cut the stem or just repot? Looks shorter the next clip 😊 mine is doing the exact same thing with the see through leaves etc 🙄
Most say that it's too delicate and will burn. However, I live in Seattle and don't get much sun, so it does well for me in my sunniest east facing window that gets direct sun. So I suppose it depends on how much lightyou get and where you live :)
Also originally from Seattle, I've lived in Ann Arbor, MI now for almost 20yrs...and while drier in the winter time, we equally see as many or more gray days as you. :-/ I'm happy to take the drier weather over the damp weather but it still feels so dark here all winter. I've managed to keep a Norfolk Pine, a couple of varieties of Agleonema and a Maranta prayer plant super happy and spreading new growth in-spite of the dreariness. However, I have the same problem you have with your Pilea. It's so frustrating. I currently have mine a few feet back from a south facing window for the winter. I'm going to see if I have better luck closer to the light. :-)
Debra Warrick yes, I have propagated many prayer plants and they do so well in our kind of weather! Definitely try bringing her closer to your south facing window. Have you seen much growth from it? I was really disappointed to see that my new growth came in much thinner and even had a point to the leaves vs how the original leaves were totally round 🤔
@@Botanibabies I actually chopped it at the dirt and put it in fresh soil in a glass terrarium so it would stay moist and grow new roots. I took it out once it started pushing new growth...its still not very strong. Hopefully more sun will work.
@@Botanibabies That's brilliant. I really think I need to chop mine but I'm just too scared 🤣 when you chopped the stalk were there any leaves left on it once you had cut the top of or can you chop it so it's just a stick and it will grow from that? Not sure how to do it xxx So glad yours is doing well, it's beautiful! X
Hello there! I tend to move this plant closer to the sun during the winter and then move it to a place with more filtered light in the summer. Here is a video that might be helpful ua-cam.com/video/5LQdQcIOSIU/v-deo.html
Help! My small Pilea has leaves curled up like mushrooms and some of them even folded in half. Leaves otherwise looks healthy. I water it carefully and it is in soil with good drainage. I want my Pilea has flat round leaves like yours. What should I do?
Hi Nina! Are you watering yours enough? Mine was doing that when It wasn't getting enough light. I eventually got a moisture meter which read "dry" more often than I expected. I think I was so worried that I would over water it that I wasn't watering it enough. Would you be able to get ahold of a moisture meter? Cheapest one I found on amazon was about $4. Hope that helps!
In Trinidad and Tobago we have a vine runs in the earth looks as it but not straight as yr plant it's all over the ground same shape of leaves don't know what the name
How are your propagation? I already killed 2 of these and my third one is on the verge of dying. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. It supposed to be an easy plant 😐
Tiff C L how does it look like when it is dying? Is it turning yellow first then brown? Or is it just getting crispy? It’s either from over watering, under watering or there may be some pests that you can’t see. I have had trouble with mine as well - it’s not as easy as everyone says it is!
@@Botanibabies I think the first one rotted. The soil it was in when I bought it holds too much water. Tried propagating the babies but they didn't root. The second one the leaves started falling off even though it's green. And some leaves that fell off has dark spots and paper thin, like the burned. But it's not in a sunny location. Then the one I have used to be bushy but leaves started falling off again. I don't too often. I wait for the soil to dry
That is awful, I'm sorry to hear that. How big was the plant overall? I know you mentioned it had 1 baby, but was the rest of the plant fully developed? Secondly, what was the condition like of the rest of the plant? Were there yellowing leaves that could indicate some sort of sickness?
I didn’t know the leaf propagations grew a new plant! I’ve got a few right now in water and watching this video has given me hope! Thank you

You're doing great! I killed 2 of these already and another one is on the verge of dying. Hopefully, it will survive. I'm trying to give it more light
Tiff C L oh no!!!! Hoping for the best for the one hanging in there!!! 🤞🏼🌱❤️
Tiff the leafs of my plant are curling I have it at my back porche where I have it is shaded
I've killed about three of these and I'm heartbroken because I love it I love the pileas and I would love to have one but I don't want to kill another one
Thank you for sharing your tips for growing and propagating this wonderful plant. Can you please let me know what soil / soil combination you used when repotting the plant ? 🙏❤️
Hi there! I use all purpose potting mix. I don't really add or change my soil - I'm too lazy lol
I bought one at lowes for $27 it came with 3 plants, in a 8” pot. But I’ve been struggle too with this plants, hey but at least is growing :)
I Hope you are fine! Miss your yideos! 🌷
$40?! I got mine for $3.75 at Home Depot-
Itss Aaronn LOL yeah, it used to be super expensive! 😭
two years ago it was very rare
new subscriber here, just wanted to ask if you had an update on this cutie? thanks for sharing, learned a lot. =)
Hi Marci! Thanks so much for subscribing!! I am actually posting an update on this plant on Sunday. Spoiler alert: it's not good... lol :(
I too love mine. I want to go sleep with it in my arms lol
LOL glad someone can relate!!
Very nice video...Love your voice too. You said in this video that you will link the video of water propagation & one more video...but I cant find any links. Would appreciate if you cound include as said. thanks
Thanks so much, Agnes! So nice of you to say that :). Yes, here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/FckBunqygEc/v-deo.html enjoy :)!!
@@Botanibabies Thank you so much...You are so very prompt.
My pilea did better once I repotted it too. Mine is getting huge and I have 5 babies on it!
That's amazing!! I hope you can harvest them and start a little pilea farm. They are sooo cute :)
How long did it take to get those 5 babies? :)
“…like l said…like l mentioned…like you’re doing great!”
Just got it today, super excited!!
green koko so happy for you!! This is a plant that will grow fast for you!
Hello, from Latvia in Europe! I hawe 2 Pileas (I hav'nt them buy)! An aunt of mine simply give thos 2 for me 😄
Yes, a while ago when they were still expensive here, I saw a lot of instagram plantparents that had so many of them and said they grew like weeds over there lol.
I used all purpose miracle grow potting soil... I am too lazy to custom mix (tee hee)
@@Botanibabies Thank you so much!! :)
I typically wait until it reads red for all my plants, hope that helps!
Thank you
You need to rotate this plant once a week for balance growth and shape.
Love this! I just got one little guy the other day!
it's such a cutie plant !! Hope you enjoy it :)!
Hello! My plant is having the same issue with translucent new leaves - how did you fix yours? I am in England so not very sunny, I have it on the windowsill. Thanks :)
Hi Vicky! Mine perked up a bit more when I cut it back. I think it just outgrew its pot :(
Nice tips !
Lynn Fisher at one point they were hard to come by in the US. Only took a couple years for it to now be the new pothos lol
Botanibabies ! Good to know other people are also experiencing this though! Yours looked quite flat in the video which is why I asked. Thanks!
When you repotted it did you cut the stem or just repot? Looks shorter the next clip 😊 mine is doing the exact same thing with the see through leaves etc 🙄
I actually cut the stem, which is why it looks shorter in the next clip :)
I paid 10 dollars in California so I bought 3 of them
That is awesome! Are they in 4" pots?
Its a beautiful plant but that wont tolorate pure sun righ?
I live in the united states in Connecticut and ive been trying to find me that and i haven't had any luck at all
Aww, sorry to hear that Leonor! They have a ton here in Seattle. Keep your eye out this spring, i bet you’ll find it there on the east coast soon 🤓🪴❤️
OK just watched further on and you have cut it 🤣 did the top piece you cut off survive? Xx
Holly it did survive and it is currently thriving!! ❤️🌱🤗
@@Botanibabies That's brilliant. I really think I need to chop mine but I'm just too scared 🤣 when you chopped the stalk were there any leaves left on it once you had cut the top of or can you chop it so it's just a stick and it will grow from that? Not sure how to do it xxx
So glad yours is doing well, it's beautiful! X
Holly you have to make sure there are leaves on the part you chop off. That is how it will process energy to make the cutting grow roots! Good luck!
@@Botanibabies OK great thank you! Do you think the rest of the stalk will be OK left without any if I chop of the half with all the leaves on? X
Holly hmmm... if it was a pothos, I would know for sure that it would frown back. I’m not too sure about this plant. Sorry! Best of luck though!
Hi..where do you keep your plant in winter and how bout summer?Thank you..do you fertilize it?
Hello there! I tend to move this plant closer to the sun during the winter and then move it to a place with more filtered light in the summer. Here is a video that might be helpful ua-cam.com/video/5LQdQcIOSIU/v-deo.html
@@Botanibabies great..thanks
That’s amazing! It’s so interesting learning about plants from around the world. I would love to see it one day. I have always wanted to see T&B 😍.
love it ❤
How are your propagation?
Mine just had one baby and in a few days it died on me 😢. Why would that happen?
That is awful, I'm sorry to hear that. How big was the plant overall? I know you mentioned it had 1 baby, but was the rest of the plant fully developed? Secondly, what was the condition like of the rest of the plant? Were there yellowing leaves that could indicate some sort of sickness?
Botanibabies ! No signs of sickness at all , the new leaves are beauties very shiny and green. Got it on July from my daughter in law on my birthday.
@@carmen8528 Yikes, that is certainly puzzling. I'm sorry about it dying :(. Are you going to get another one? I would say to keep trying!
Omg $40 😱. I paid $2 at produce junction
Ur pot is to big so it's taking lots of water ?
