- In honor of the upcoming 4K release of "The Outsiders," here is some ultra-rare footage of the premiere of Francis Ford Coppola's "The Outsiders" at Lone Star School in Fresno, California back in March of 1983. I had purchased this material decades ago from a seller on eBay.
Hosted by Michelle Russell, we get a look at the students who wrote to Coppola asking him to turn the S.E. Hinton novel into a motion picture. Included are actors C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Leif Garrett, Darren Dalton, and producer Fred Roos.
*The quality of the footage is very poor, but given its extremely rare condition, I still felt that this material would be of value.

Ralph, wasn’t known yet so you wouldn’t have passed out! After the 1980’s he basically disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle! He’s a flunky who had to reboot the only movie he’s known for into a tv show.

Being a diehard outsiders fan for 20 years how did I not know this existed???? I’m ashamed in myself but glad I found it now. I am so happy this is a thing and omg those lucky girls. What I would give to have been a teen in the 80s. This was such a good watch. Ugh I loved every second of it and so obsessed with anything that has to do with the greatest movie of all time. nothing will ever beat it
Been a diehard fan myself since I was 3 or 4 and saw it on HBO in late '83. Long before any of them were major stars.

I was born in ‘86 and I’ll never forget my 7th grade teacher Mrs. Minniti chose this book for us to read… changed my life and I’ll never forget it. Going to see the musical and I CANNOT WAIT! ❤️❤️

14 year old me would have DIED if I got to meet Matt Dillion. Omg so lucky!! We read the book in school to, maybe 2004. I saw the movie right after and fell in head over heals love with Matt Dillion. Awesome it spanned at least 20 years in schools. If the kids don’t still read this, that’s a shame.

Leif seemed easy to talk to. He started conversations with the girls, him and Patrick. Meeting Matt would be AWESOME! But all of them are so excellent, best cast ever!

@@RichardB.Spencer it’s rare that people my age enjoy older film, I personally prefer older movies - something about them is just so much better. I always try and get my peers to watch movies from the 80s and older, so hopefully there will be more people like me ^_^
I remember when this movie first came out on cable and I saw it for the first time. It was on a channel called Prism. I was OBSESSED with them ALL!!!! A few years later Tommy Howell and Juliet Lewis were filming a movie in my hometown and my best friend got to meet and get pictures with Tommy. She said he was so sweet. ❤

This makes me sad. But it also makes me super happy. I so I wish I lived during this time period. Those people are incredibly lucky to get to meet these amazing actors! it is so sad to me how celebrities are treated as attractions. I love them, but I feel bad.
How are they being treated like attractions tf? The kids came up to them and just hung out and talked to them like normal human beings instead of all of in their face taking pictures and stuff the guys enjoyed the attention especially they weren’t well known at the time it’s normal for everyone to scream and cheer in the audience and have the guys talk on stage and stuff because they were all excited this was everyone’s first time seeing the film it was an exciting time for everyone
@@blairjane9228 its just celebrities in general. sure it wasnt as bad in the 80s as it is now, but i just feel like even though us fans are jut showing our love, it can get a little frustrating for some celebrities. I just feel like their human rights are not the same as ours sometimes. You cant even go to the grocery store without being treated like a walking picture or something. I dont know I know some celebrities probably dont mind such as c thomas howell and the others, but sometimes I just feel like its probably hard to live that way. Just my opinion you dont have to agree with me.😊

It’s not like this is a new thing and they had NO clue something like this could happen. I know it is worse now then it has ever been and I am sure it can get very invasive and even annoying and I am sure there are days that they wish they could just be unrecognizable. But as the old saying goes ya gotta take the bad with the good.

But for people like me who are passionate when it comes to the art of acting, I wish it was possible to be successful in that career field to still make a living doing what you love, without having to be famous. Sadly it’s not, so people with dreams of being an actor like me have to find something else to settle for

Maybe it's a minority opinion but I feel Matt Dillon should have been bigger and more successful than Cruise or Lowe or any of the rest of them but it didn't turn out that way
I agree. I just watched “The Saint of Fort Washington” earlier tonight and I kept thinking about how much I like Dillon as an actor and how underrated both he and that movie are.

I remember a film "A Kiss Before Dying" he did alongside Sean Young who might be the female counterpart to Dillon in that she was also projected to have a loftier destiny in the industry. Another film I liked Dillon in was the romantic drama "Mr. Wonderful "

This is the coolest video!!! It brought me so much joy to watch this!!! I love seeing the young actors interact with the students!!! The words spoken by the librarian who started the petition brought me to happy tears with her message of Hope for us all!!!! So amazing!!!
at 12:50 into the video Patric Swayze offers for the girl on the stage to leap into his arms, (as a joke) but it immediately reminded me of the iconic scene in Dirty Dancing with the leap by Jennifer Grey. That movie had not been made yet... very spooky and cool !!

“The Outsiders” is a cinematic masterpiece and quite frankly the best “from book to film” movie I’ve ever seen. I proudly introduced it to my new wife who like me grew up in the 80s, but somehow missed seeing this great film. She loved it and I of course became emotional when seeing it and hearing Stevie Wonder’s “Stay Gold” at the beginning and end credits. A heartfelt movie with great actors in their youth. 🥹🙌🏾❤️
