NEW Mercedes EQS Review: REST IN PEACE S-Class? 4K

- The Mercedes EQS, aka the all-electric version of the S-Class, is here! Rory tests it back to back with an S-Class, specifically the big-dog S500, to see whether electrification brings benefits to the luxury car sector. Can it defeat the king?

It's amazing how he kept the review interesting throughout the video didn't even feel like it was 20 minutes video
There are 50+ minute reviews out there. And I watched some twice.
Same here😂
Damn didnt realise it was 20min long until i read your comment.
One of the best presenters in this category…IMHO
Agreed, Rory Reid is first class.
The EQS has an amazing interiour but its exteriour was clearly designed by a wind tunnel.
It looks like a last generation Toyota Avensis.
@I love you but It certain won't be a problem when you sit inside. But I would slap a $15k two-tone paint on it.
Aerodynamics and design have less in common than you might think… just take a look at the w124, the drag coefficient is better than many modern cars. The terrible design was purely a design choice
@@bighands69 it looks like shit
The more the review goes on, the better it looks
EQS looks worse, but it was made to be experienced from inside and to prolong range as much as possible. I think they did quite a good job there
the old 3 box design really oozes presence but for efficiency sake the more teardrop-ish shape is a much better choice. Can't help to feel that if they decluttered the front end from the fake vents ( make it look closer to the concept car ) & make the taillights a lot slimmer like a Taycan they could've made a much more striking car while keeping it elegant
@@thatcopenguy yep, Taycan taillights suit almost every car. Also, I agree, car makers should stop faking car parts..
Guess what...nobody cares what u think....noone here know who u r:):)
@@mikepawlik3989 Goes both ways mate
@@thatcopenguy the concept car looked so good. The rear end just looks weird.
I'm still unsure about the exterior,, but the interior and performance.... Wow.
The best EQS review to date.
Needs wagon version.
I mean the tech is super impressive but the S class looks worlds ahead.
Why is it world's ahead?
@@rossbergin8221 I said it looks. The S class is just a majestic looking car. The EQS looks… odd imo.
They should have put all the electric tech in the regular shape S Class. The eqs looks awkward
@@rabel1545 Forget about the looks, it's a v1. They will eventually get there. The odd shape was to get that 0,20 Cx.
If Tesla can achieve a 0,208 Cx on a Model S Plaid with a cold design, so can Mercedes.
@@patrick1038 what are you talking about? Of course it's a V1 and it needed to hit a 0.2 cx. HOWEVER it still should be a S class. And it doesn't look like it. If it would be a EQCLS I would be fine with it but a S class should show dominance. The EQS is just silly. The side profile looks awful and not representing of a s class.
Thank you AutoTrader for being the only UA-cam channel comparing the EQS vs S-Class.
In my view, EQS is an electric CLS. Not an S-Class replacement. The rear seats are nowhere near as good, nor is the build quality. But at least it seems better for the driver. Shame it doesn't look very good, especially the rear 3/4.
By the way, the hyperscreen is optional and costs 8k.
8k 🥺, there goes the value of my current car 😂
I wouldnt look too much into the build quality example he gave, the switchgear bit he said moved is supposed to move because it reacts to you pressing it. In another(German) video they are pointing out how clever this is. Its built in the same factory as S-Class so it should be screwed together as well.
Carwow just did
As a CLS owner, the EQS would be a bad CLS replacement design wise, regarding the exterior. The CLS has near perfect proportions, while the EQS has really bad proportions. The EQS interior, however, is the greatest and most futuristic one, I really like it excluding some minor details.
8:41 "even a budget electric car is more refined than a high end expensive S-Class"! Well, that's not my experience. I've been in a friend's Tesla model S (far from budget EV) many times and as an overall package it is nowhere near the refinement of an S-Class. It's not only about engine noise, there's wind noise, road noise, suspension noise, body flex noise, overall sound proofing etc. In all those areas an S-Class is far more refined than an budget EV.
exactly
Yes but it's been said many times, the Model S is like an iPhone whereas everything else is like an Android.
Why do you think everybody would easily choose any high end EV over the Model S but they go for the Model S eventually? Because of the charging grid. Nothing else.
@@FOGoticus tesla is like a casio watch and any german car is like a rolex , pedigree ,racing history ect..

The S class any day.
The EQS is nice but the S class presence is crazy.
The previous generation of the S is way more good looking imo
Looks like a c class tho
@@KayJblue ikr, all previous generations of s , e and c classes were way better than this new design... But cant only shame mercedes for that other companies been making them ugly aswell look the new M cars of bmw with that ugly front
Soo, to be exact, technologically it is the better car, but I‘ll never reach an S-Class in terms of design and elegance. The proportions are just weird somehow. And there is a Star missing on the hood:)
Lol. Stars miss on the hood when they are on the grill.
@@femisolaoraf4760 You must be quite new to Mercedes cars and their star placement or existence in general.
Not to mention the rear seat passengers of which usually most owners of an S Class will sit, the seating position is crap in the EQS!
The interior and performance of the EQS with the S class exterior would be perfect👍🏾
They can do it, but you have to make a choice between range and exterior elegance. I'll take range, because I'm inside and not outside admiring my car. It's not a Bugatti, Ferrari, etc.
I'm going all in.
You must be the first to compare the two best cars in the world to date. One actually following in the footsteps of the industry's reference and generations of automotive heritage and traditions. You are the youtube pioneer. Great choice for comparison.
EQS looks like a tortoise with wheels from the side, it's for aerodynamics but the S class is the looker here
PS: if an electric S class is this smooth just imagine an electric Rolls Royce lol
For real tho it looks so weird
It looks weird but I like it
The shape loos fine but the grill is ugly
Looks like a model 3
Sure EQS ain't the prettiest, but I wouldn't say the S Class is good looking. It's pretty average looking. I saw one in the traffic, and looked like a standard saloon. Didn't stand out in any way. Put it next to a Maserati Quattroporte, and a S Class looks bland. Same goes for any VW or BMW saloon as well.
I might be in a minority of one by absolutely loving the look of it. Though I wish they had gone even further like ditching the outside rear view mirrors in favor of micro cameras. Putting the front license plate behind a flush glass window like the Citroën SM, and topping it all up with using covered rear wheel arches like old Citroën’s and Cadillacs. These changes would undoubtedly improve the aerodynamics even further so Mercedes Benz could market it as the first car with a sub 0,2 aerodynamic coefficiency.
Add to the Side rearview cameras, would be interior TV screen at the windshield line, to barely take your eyes off the road to see what your three mirrors are doing in one continuous strip in front of the driver. I saw an illustration a few years ago, much safer, no Blindspot’s, and no more small passenger side mirror, you would see a full view - comparable to sitting in a convertible and the driver completely turning around - he would see “everything” in a 2 foot / .6m strip of monitor
Rolls Royce can learn a thing or two from the EQS about self opening doors.
By the way, S Class all day, everyday for me.
Rolls Royces to have self opening doors…. It’s called your chauffeur!!
I know EQS is like super aerodynamic, but I soo wish they made an EQS that looks like the classic S class.
The 2020 Phantom also has this feature.
self presenting doors and brake pedal closing on them has been on tesla Model X for years now.
@@theredline2283 Excellent point
The EQS design is questionable, not great, but it’s so impressive, the tech, the infotainment, especially range and charging speed. I believe there will still be S-Class customers in the future because of “badge loyalty” if you know what I mean. If a buyer were to live in a city whereby EV charging infrastructure is not there yet, they may prefer a S-Class. Otherwise, the EQS is the way to go. In fact, I believe all luxury cars should be electric, just waiting for Rolls Royce and Bentley to respond.
If you can afford an S-Class, you should have your own garage/parking where it is very easy to install your own charger.
With the range this car offers (every morning it starts with a full battery), you then won't give a rat's arse about the charging ifrastructure in your city. Only the HPC chargers along motorways would matter.
Funny how everyone complain about BMW but like this exterior. I prefer BMW IX and i7 over this any day.
The EQS just isn’t a good looking car. The rear looks off, much like the other electric mercs we’ve seen so far.
Yeah. The electric merc SUV’s rear looks off too
Yeah, they need to get it together, with their EV design, it's just bad, it's boring, doesn't look very stately like a Mercedes at all. They look like they're all made from plastic, like they were designed by a kid.
Over a decade ago, Toyota figured out that the egg shape of the Prius is super aerodynamic while maximizing interior volume. EVs are so quiet inside without the ICE that they need to be as aerodynamic as possible to reduce bothersome wind noise. I'm sure we'll see lots and lots more egg-shaped EVs. The problem is that it's just not an attractive shape for a car.
The front looks like a Honda
@@jasonjarosz5897 The issue with EVs isn't just wind noise. Drag is the limiting factor with an EV in highway range, and their range suffers badly if they are not aerodynamic
'You wouldn't even look twice would you?!'😂
Thee perfect description.
your reviews are outstanding. you make it like a movie with a rythm
This was an interesting review of the EQS especially comparing it with the S-Class.
Waiting for the S-Class door to open automatically...good one Rory.
You need the maybach for that
That's a Maybach exclusive feature.
The design of the eqs is very poor in my opinion. It looks like a sad, droopy fish that's been stranded out of water. It does not look good at all
Agreed it just looks soo weird outside cause of the small bonnet and stretched c pillar :/
It's sad because it's the only major downside on a otherwise perfect daily driver.
@@cn2673 it has a pretty good range. I don’t see many people often driving over 600 km in a single day. If you do, you would also stop for at least 15 minutes to recharge. 15 minutes is nothing.
99% of people drive that much 2-3 times a year at most.
I often wonder why car manufacturers can’t design a good looking electric luxury cars ? For top of the range luxury car , it is ugly and unattractive.
Idk how they can sit there and say this is our new flagship electric car.
That is a machine. The 580 EQS would be my first choice though. Thanks for the video. You presented it with authority.
I'd imagine EVs are aerodynamic and slippery to eke out every single little mile out of the range. It'll probably be like this until EV ranges are big enough that they can take a little hit due to drag and whatnot.
I hope they keep making efficient cars…
Probably why Rolls Royce hasn't gotten onto it yet; electric would be a perfect drivetrain for RR but if it means foregoing that iconic upright grille...
Imagine an EV G Wagon 😂
@@nonikhanna1 the EQG (electric G Wagon) is expected to get an official reveal in 2022 and be available in 2024. It will not be efficient, especially on the highway.
Many auto companies make a go of producing a car that is as efficient as possible but all auto companies will soon be producing electric SUVs - the SUVs will not be very efficient. But the companies will make a lot of money off of the SUVs.
I really like the way Rory puts a review together. Informative and snappy with just a bit of humour as well
Oh My Gosh! Rory, you're amazing at this! I have a very low attention span. I usually start to lose interest very easily but you had my attention throughout the entire video! Good job!
I would get the S-Class without a doubt just for the hood ornament! The 3 Pointed Star leads the way wherever your going! What's better than that?!!!!!!

Not having a huge amount of depreciation?
A private jet?
I’d rather take a hit on efficiency by taking the outward appearance of the S-Class with the batteries powering it. I sort of like the EQS styling, however, I simply prefer the S-Class.
Me too. But Mercedes needed a future looking vehicle to fight Tesla.
Glad to see Mercedes finally going all in with a new EV platform. Looks amazing and feels luxurious!
They are only 2 years delayed, no thanks in part to Tesla buying out their battery assembly mfg right in the middle of development. And cancelling the Mercedes delivery contract.
Could be worse, BMW lost two of their battery assembly suppliers to Tesla (back to back).
@@fredpinczuk7352 Holy shit , Tesla is letting them with nothing 🤣

I really still do prefer the previous generation of S-class, it simply just looks way more opulent. However, I like the EQS, it is kinda a more classy Tesla model-S.

Just huge props for the production team! Shooting this definitely must've taken blood sweat and tears
Bravo
Love how he completely ignored the fact that the door did in fact trap his leg at 17:50
It didn't cut the leg off tho, that's the important part. BUT, kind of dissapointed that he needed to feelt that.
Mercedes have gotta be the best in game when it comes to interior car design. it's just stunning!
every pound is a seedling, invest your seedling to creat a tree,re-invest your seedling to creat a forest. to become rich you must value savings more than spending
most people remain poor only because of the negative advice received from friends and family members against investing while the wise invest and grow
I agree that the door opening feature is just a flex. Does it have a proximity sensor to ensure it doesn't open too far into another car in a tight parking space? While the door handles (ditto on the S Class) look great, I suspect the novelty would wear off very fast and you'd just want a traditional door handle.
Watch the whole video

By far the most comprehensive review I have seen on this car!
The design really breaks this car.
It looks 5 price brakets lower than it is.
Tesla measures the drag while moving. Mercedes does it while stationary.. Wheels rotating makes a massive difference..

Proper panel alignment is also another benefit to the Merc for aerodynamics.
I will personally go for Bentley flying spur. Same price same quality but gets way more attention.
So true

"gets way more attention." is a downside
The aerodynamic shape design is what really puts me off most EVs. Beside, automotive are very efficient nowadays. Not really sold on this EV phenomena, as it's no longer about sustainability; pure green sheen. GREAT VIDEO as always. Love the lengthy reviews.
Gas cars around 25% efficwnt, EVs 90%. Gas cars are extremely inneficient actually.
Going to be very interesting to see what AMG can come up with with the EVs
Well probably a 4 wheel drive double or triple engine 800-900hp version.
And close to 3 tons which makes it rather pointless to try and make it 'sporty'

very nice presentation, I watched a lot of EQS videos but learned some details now
The concept version of this car looks 10 billion times better!
This production version looks like a 2015 Hyundai Sonata, only bigger.
I am totally disappointed.
True with many cars unfortunately…
The EQS also shows traffic lights and video in Realtime when you're at a traffic light. Not sure if this is in the UK but in Germany it works
As a S Class driver I was hoping the rear seats in the EQS was as good as the S Class. Sadly I cant change to the EQS because of this. Plus I still think the S Class has more presence and elegance. I’ll just wait for the plug in hybrid version of the new S class.
You need to see the EQS in person
The S-class is most likely about as smooth as the EQS, because IC-engines run worse as in rougher when they just come off the assembly line and requires some mileage before it can run smoothly. This is why I think some manufacturers will run the car or engine several hours before selling the car to the masses.
Also just because most IC-engines are not very smooth doesn’t mean they can’t be super smooth. V12s have perfect balance and often described to be as smooth as an electric motor. An inline 6 is also perfectly balanced, but they lack the overlap of a v12 so it a little less smooth, but adding a heavy flywheel would solve that problem, it will make the engine less responsive in how fast it can rev in neutral, but make the car easier to drive on the motorway and smoothen the power delivery which would suit the S-class well.
wait so the rear-wheel steering is physically part of the car that you bought, but artificially limited in software? no thanks.
Thanks for actually mentioning that detail, I've seen other videos of the car and it wasn't mentioned.
Not only that it's a subscription.

Legendary review🔥... putting the Best (EQS) head2head with the Great (S)...
I have seen a lot of reviews on the eqs.... GOOD JOB... KEEP IT UP
I don’t care what anyone says: these touchscreen systems are absolute garbage and downright dangerous. For once I can’t wait for them to be outlawed on safety grounds.
Couldn’t have said it any better.
Just because it’s electric, doesn’t mean our hands, fingers and senses have been wiped off the face of the earth.
Unbelievable trend, and agreed, governments and all of them need to get their act on and need to sort this crap.
I am surprised they are allowed in the first place!
Totally agree
Wasn't the same thing said about ICE vehicles when they started being more and more popular? Yes. Yes it was.
However, progress only happens through trial and error. And for a good product to exist, it must first fail. So yeah, give it another 5 years. Electric Cars are the future no matter how we put it.
@@FOGoticus I thought we were talking about touchscreens here? Has nothing to do with electric cars

Award Winning level review of The EQS Rory, many thanks,
Mercedes finally realised that the silence of the electric motor is the way for the best possible crusing
I actually like the EQS. It's very discrete on the outside. You wouldn't really know it's a luxury car unless you really looked at the logo symbol.
EQS looks like the bloated corpse of a 2007 S Class pulled out of heavily polluted river.
To be fair, I love the look of the EQS, it has grown a lot on me. Although, the LOVELY LOOKING S Class looks GALAXIES better!
Tbh I would take aerodynamics over a more typical body shape any day. Besides I actually like the weird looks of the EQS. The single-bow design just isn't something I've really seen on anything else and the uniqeness makes me love it so much more.
Keep in mind when big cars brag about their drag coefficient, that is a value that you multiply by frontal area to get the total drag. So a huge S-Class or Corvette with a low CD, does still push more air than say, a prius, because a prius has much less frontal area. etc and so on.
Why does the new generation S-Class have an infotainment screen like the the Toyota Avalon?
only to be expected .. a brilliant presentation . you are the man when it comes to reviewing motors .
I wish they had just put an electric motor in the s class instead of making the eqs. For that design, I’d have a model s any day…
What?. You want 800 kg of batteries slung out over the front axle ?? Never mind all the other electric gubbins required. That simply is never gonna happen. And you prefer an 9 year old Tesla design instead… you own a Tesla I presume? Or work for them?
@@IverKnackerov Model S, even being a 9 year design, still looks better from exterior than EQS.

Well done for showing the ICE and electric options with mainly pros but a few cons, I really hope you can do more of these comparisons moving forward such as BMW i4 vs 430/etc. Keep up the good work
I am amazed by how round the eqs look but is still more aerodynamic than a freaking Lamborghini aventador … let that sink in
Isn't the Aventador designed for downforce?
I love digging through menus when driving
Did nobody else notice Rory wearing his watch the wrong way round?
Great observation
It’s probably for performance reasons , you know like divers and some drivers so that you can see the dials always and more without needing to move your wrist or compromise a firm grip on the wheel .
Nice review. If you're going for refinement ICE makes no sense anymore. Any other disadvantages/compromises are choices by Mercedes, probably to hit a price point.
One thing I don't understand on this and most other EVs: why the paddles to change the regenerative braking? I've yet to try a car with it, but it seems far less intuitive than the Tesla/Nissan system: if you want to coast, take your foot off the accelerator pedal a bit. If you want to slow down a bit, take your foot off the pedal a bit more. If you want to slow down a lot, take your foot off the pedal completely. It's really not difficult - the paddles are just one more thing to think about.
S class looks considerably better. I don't care how aerodynamic the EQS is. it's quite horrendous actually.
Interested to see reviews of the Lucid Air and EQS together since the Air is supposed to be quite luxurious....if it ever hits the market
Good comment. The EQS will find its better in the Lucid Air, if the specs are anything to go by
Eqs looks good and better then s-class!!!! BEV perfect for luxury
Rory, thanks for comparing them, that was my big question, and thanks for talking about the smoothness, a luxury bar like myself wants smooth quiet comfort.
I would like to have an eqs that looks like the s class
You should see the EQS' interior light up at night!
6:54 - stop calling them "daddy", it's just cringe.
7:08 - only the E-Active Body Control scans the road ahead
7:57 - completely wrong, those actuators are part of the 4D audio system, not for the massaging seats
8:21 - that's actually impossible, especially in the S500 due to the physics of the inline 6, they are perfectly balanced out, that's why also the V12's are so smooth because they are basically just two inline 6 engines
Even an inside 6 still causes some sort of vibration to be felt, not the case with an electric motor that is inherently perfectly smooth.
@@SusieSmart an inline six engine is in perfect primary and secondary mechanical balance. they don’t even need a balance shaft because of it like a V6. you could basically put it on the floor, run the engine and it won’t move from the spot.
