2012 (11 years old, turning 12 that year): 4:21.98
2013 (12 years old, turning 13 that year) 4:15.87
2014 (14 years old (yup, you read right, he turned 14 1 day before this race)): 4:05.49
2015 (14 years old, turning 15 that year) 3:48.37
2016 (15 years old, turning 16 that year): 3:42.44
2017 (16 years old, turning 17 that year): 3:39.92
2018 (17 years old, turning 18 that year): 3:31.18
2019 (18 years old, turning 19 that year): 3:30.16

That's insane 😲 a lot of professional athletes (especially white ones) train their whole lives and don't reach those times! He's well on his way to becoming the fastest ever and the greatest!

3:46.32, and Dieter Baumann is the fastest non-African in the 5000m with 12:54.70. I'd say Jakob was capable of those times in 2020, but he didn't run a single mile or 5000m that season. The fact that he has surpassed Sebastian Coe, Steve Cram, Steve Ovett, Fermin Cacho, Nick Willis, Mo Farah, Taoufik Makhloufi, and Rui Silva (time-wise) is just mindboggling to me.
Jakob was running sub 5 miles when he was at least 11 years old, that is absolutely insane
@@bendover2743 The youngest guy I've found, who ran a sub 5 mile is Daniel Skandera. 4:46.6 at 10 years and 8 months. And when he was 9 years and 7 months he ran 5:02.5
He has actually beaten Jakob's WR for 11-year-olds in the 1500m (he improved it from 4:21.98 to 4:21.2) The question is how he will progress. He is 7 years younger than Jakob, and is obviously super talented, but I have found no results for him from 2020 (only 2019 and earlier seasons)

A fabulous video this, Jakob's mindset is as good as his exceptional dedication I believe he will win the next Olympic 5k title and the world title I believe he can break Cheptegai"s world record and beyond massive congratulations on his success up to now much more to follow no question.
I am inspired by his story and it is the motivation I needed to be a better runner in all running events I take part in.

@@ThePierrezx That would be interesting. I heard one of the Kenyans (I think it was Jacob Krop (so many great runners named Jacob/Jakob)) speak highly of Jakob I.
I remember seeing a short documentary on UA-cam where the Kenyans called Craig Mottram the big mzungu (big white man) They said that Mottram had "the heart of a lion" as opposed to "the heart of a chicken", meaning that he had great courage, determination, and stamina. A rare feature for the non-African runners to be a threat among the East-African runners. There are only a few non-African runners each generation that leaves a great mark/legacy on distance running. Some good examples are: Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett, Steve Cram, Fermin Cacho, Dieter Baumann, Craig Mottram, Galen Rupp, Evan Jager, Sondre Norstad Moen, Suguru Osako, Stewart McSweyn, Jake Wightmann, and OF COURSE Jakob Ingebrigtsen. I can't wait to see the future of distance running. The Ingebrigtsens, Cheptegei, Kipmlimo, Kipruto, Barega, Edris, Gebrhiwet, Kejelcha, Burgin etc. It's gonna be Legen-Dary.

I one one thing for sure, his saying he has no talent, presumably just hard work got him where he is, is not realistic, lacks knowledge, or ( I hope not this) he is being deliberately grandiose suggesting it was only from his efforts from a mere average individual. Yet all the progression from 12 years suggests otherwise. Either way, he appears so famous in Norway, when in fact he is not the equivalent international standard of its great skiers ( especially cross country). The young African runners are more humble, and never say they are going to be the best, and must win, just attempt to be so by demonstration. Big difference.

The only people who believe you are not born with talent are those who are born with lots of it, but like to think they are responsible for developing it. We all have some talent. Having more than others gives a head start and pushes the upper limit higher.
I mean to be fair, you are definitely born with or without the talent that allows you to become a great athlete, but I really respect this his work ethic and his attitude that he must work harder and more than anyone else. This is what truly allows those blessed with the highest level of talent to achieve greatness and immortality.

Looking forward to the Olympics..... he is fast enough to win but, as we all know, he won't be the only one fast enough to win so you need a few other elements to come together too, including a bit of luck on the day. I hope he gets it.

Yepp. Ppl should watch their reality show ''Team Ingebrigtsen'', where you get real close on the whole family.
He talks about it several times, how they tried out different sports, like cross-country skiing. But they ended up on running, and of Jakob did whatever Henrik and Filip did.
I think both Jakob and Gjert (father/trainer) have said that it's wasn'tt so much abt loving running. For Jakob it was winning and become the best in the world, and for Gjert it was to make his kids wishes come true. Like make them excel in what they chose. BUT, if they were to go at something, then they gotta do it 100%! So it's not by chance they became so good.

With a quick look at the all-time fastest 1500m they all hit their fastest times in their mid to late 20s. Jakob is the 8th fastest ever and still just 20. Wow.

Talent is just a way to talk down hard work.
Everyone who is "talented" has put in hours upon hours upon hours upon hours of work, they weren't just born to be great at something.
Not taking away from his insane hard work but stuff like lactic acid tolerance and VO2 max are stuff you are born with.
That's actually not very accurate. Talent in innate and genetically determined. What you do with that talent is what determines success and end results.

Usain Bolt won his first WC medal at age 21, Carl Lewis at age 22, Steve Cram at 22, Yelena Isinbayeva at 21, Noureddine Morceli at 21, Hicham El Guerrouj at 20. Jakob will be just fine. I'm certain he'll win either silver or gold in Tokyo 2021.

And the only person in history to reach the finals in BOTH the 1500m and the 5000m in a World Championships, while still a junior (and he placed in the top 5 in both of them). Youngest sub-4 minute miler in history (at 16 years and 250 days old) the First person to ever win both the 1500m and the 5000m at the European Championships (which he did at age 17). He doesn't think its talent, I beg to differ. Theres thousands of athletes who could run ten times the amount he does and they still wouldn't be able to touch him. But the family support and his drive and motivation are definitely huge factors.
I don't think there's many that could run 10 times more than him let alone 100 miles a week and he was training well since he was 10 and has two brothers to push him in training
Running more doesnt make you better. Its about training the exact right amount and the right things and that is what the Ingebrigtsens have done @Rasher
Running 10 times more than jakob is impossible, he is a professional athlete because he has good genes, insane winner instinct, and he has trained way more than anybody else from a very young age

You can't say you didn't push your child into running or push them hard, and then have them run a 4:21 mile at 12 years old, like his father says. I don't get why he felt the need to lie about that, it's like bodybuilders lying about how many calories they eat. They feel like it detracts from the accomplishment and they want people to think that the majority of their abilities come from 99% genetic talent and 1% hard work. In every sport, and even in games like chess, the best performers are the ones whose parents raised them doing it when they were the only ones who knew the big picture. Little 4-10 year old Jakob didn't understand why he was running, just that it was always a part of his life. Again, it doesn't detract from the accomplishments, so I don't see the reason to leave out that early start, which is often more than a decade before their peers start the sport in high school. I am very excited to see how far Jakob can go with all of that said, he's phenomenal.

What does everyone in your family do for work? Oh, we're all pro runners.
Yeah, it's almost as though being brought up with people who knew how to train and kept applying himself. People said I was "talented", just worked harder. When I stopped working, the "talent" dissapeared. The only people who believe success is a gift you are born with are those who never tried to actually achieve anything and blame everything around them.

im not a running expert but when do runners usually peak?
short and middle distance can be early 20s to mid 20s, long distance usually in the 30s.
IT varies from people to people but usually atheletes break bunch of records before 25 but many have still broken records even after 30s for example Eliud Kipchoge so it really depends on ur health and training. But if I have to say an age then I'd say around 24 😃

In order to be the BEST, you have to first break all three of Daniel Komens long standing World records, all set before 1997 or earlier
1- The mind bending 7min 58sec for two miles, the time he set on the second occasion when he went under 8min
Komen ran the first mile quicker than Roger Bannister did, whilst breaking under that magical 4minute barrier, and then went on to run a further mile at the same pace as Bannister.
Daniel Komen is still the only human being to have gone under 8min for two miles, so that's record number one.
2- Then there's both the 3000m indoor and outdoor World Records, 7min 24sec for the indoor, and a scarcely believable 7min 20sec outdoors.
All these records were set nearly twenty five years ago, and no athlete has even come close to beating them.
Dear Mr Ingebritsen, until you come anywhere near these records, you will be just another one of the other hugely talented athletes, of whom there are hundreds from Ethiopia and Kenya

I would reply that running is my passion and that winning is my job. That would have been true a lifetime ago, but now women are my passion and soccer is my job. Running is who I am. Frankly you've just insulted a lot people who are passionate about running, I'm not going to be offended for them, but I'd like to point out that you're not the fastest in the world, so you shouldn't be talking about winning like it's something automatic. You may have experienced victory as a necessity given the dynamic with your parents and siblings, but when you cross the finish line, the footage shows you are defeated. You sort of slump over 1:21

I'd say that the genetic advantages are more prevelant at the longer distances. Europeans have typically done quite well over the middle distances. Also I think saying he won't break the WR with nothing to back it up is just hating.
Don't set limits to what other people can achieve or not. Set only for urs.

@Rubber Duck Yep, incremental improvement only from here.................ahh, sorry dude. He just took nearly 4 seconds off his Indoor 1500M time TODAY. Ran 3:30.81, which is now #5 all time. Less than 1 second off world record. I know many want to keep living in the world where a white man can't be the best in distance running. But this kid may prove you wrong real soon. He is #2 in the world indoor and outdoor 1500M right now. Than means he is better than every afraica except two, so you better check that ego at the door my friend. He is coming......
These same type of people want to believe a non-african will never be the fastest in the sprints either. 10 years ago a non-african never went under 10 seconds in the 100M. Now there are 9 of them (5 asians and 4 causcasions). Humans are essentially the same all over. Who excels in any specific event is essentially a social construct. People all over the world see it is possible and you will have 2.5 billion asians knowing it is possible. Its just a matter of time.

kiplimo may be able to beat him in the 3k and 5k and beyond (especially since Jakob trains primarily more for the shorter distance events) but Kiplimo wouldn't beat him in the 1500, 1 mile, and the 2k. Even the 3k at some point in time.
