Building an Off Grid Cabin using Free Pallet Wood: A Wilderness Project

  • We built this small off grid log cabin using recycled pallet wood that we collected for free. The aim of the diy project was to try and save money by building a cabin in the forest on the cheap. Living off grid is something we have always admired, being able to forage and gather food from the land, much like the primitive hunter-gatherer did. This off the grid cabin, although small, is an ideal one-man bug out camp in a survival situation. Slowly, we are turning this off grid cabin in the forest into a wilderness homestead.
So far, this tiny hobbit home has no electricity or solar power, but it does have a window, roof, front porch, folding table, raised bed, chair, bench, shelves, bookcase and a woodstove to keep the cabin warm during the cold winter months.
To build the pallet wood cabin we have used a mixture of hand tools and power tools. We filmed and documented the building of this log cabin in a playlist on our channel called "The Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin" which you can watch here: • Off Grid Log Cabin Bui...
We started the cabin build by breaking the pallets down into useable pieces of timber. We then cleared a site in the forest to build the foundations of the cabin using larger pallets. The second stage of the build was the side walls, and then the roof, which we used a piece of recycled tin from an old barn. We then fitted a small window from a garden shed, and started to work on building the front porch. Once the main structure of the cabin was complete, we focused on making rustic pallet wood furniture for the inside of the small house. We bolted together a raised bed, and made a small chair and foldaway table to save space inside. We then needed to heat the cabin, for this we opted for the G Stove Heat View which has a stove pipe oven attachment so that we can bake food in it, plus a water container to boil water for fresh coffee and tea.
In many of the episodes we cooked food in cast iron frying pans on the woodstove. In the warmer months we cooked on an open camp fire using a cast iron grill on a Bushcraft style tripod which we lashed together. We have cooked fresh fish, pie, bacon, eggs, soup and much more on the woodstove.
Hopefully, we can use this former Bushcraft Camp as an area to practice developing our wilderness survival skills, learning primitive technology and how to forage for wild edibles and catch and cook our food. At the end of the day, this project was more about a father and son spending time in the outdoors working on free diy projects and learning how to become self reliant and save money for a happier lifestyle. We hope you enjoy the adventure!

I sat here and thought “I’m not sitting here for an hour watching 2 guys built a cabin”
An hour later, multiple rewinds and many smiles later - I’m totally glad I did.
Recycled supples, simple tools, no words.
I am in awe, gentlemen. Well done!

Onward to more additions to the pallet cabin. You guys have done so much, and there is virtually no end to what you could add. Thank you for sharing this wonderful look at a father and son enjoying each other! More cooking at the cabin with that unbelievable bacon you have in the U.K.! An outhouse and storage shed will be good additions. But whatever you choose will be great. Thankz

Did this when I was 10 years old.
Back in the woods of my parents home.
12 acres of land and 5 Acres of woods.
But I used a hatchets and what I could find as Vines to build what I needed for shelter.
No nails, or anything like what is available today.
I was brought up as a Survivor not to depend on energy or anything else except physical strength, and knowledge to survive.

How can anyone not like this? Unless you own property, you cannot do that here in "free" America. Even when you do "own" property, people still won't leave you alone. Own is in quotes because here in America you pay taxes on everything you have or your municipality, state, and federal take it away from you.(Detractors: including stuff that has nothing to do with "schools and roads.")

    • @myfrequencies1912

Owning nature is an illusion. We are supposed to be custodians of the Earth not it's "owners". I believe the only way we can redress the balance is by taking direct action. Living off grid, illegally in the local wood, full or part time. Depending how it fits into one's life. I have been full time off grid, completely illegally in my local wood for almost five months. My set up isn't NEARLY as slick as what these guys built but I have documented it on my channel.

Depends where you live. Plenty of people do this. I hope a more substantial structure than this one ( no disrespect intended). Besides it is not for everyone. It is not an easy way to live. Depends on the individual of course, but most folks cannot take it.

You not only used pallets to build the cabin but you built it off the grid and out in the woods where you have access to lumber that you also did not pay for. It was a very resourceful build. I love the stove, how you made guard rails out of trees for the porch, a place for firewood, you built all of your little bit of what furnishings you needed. People think I am weird because I want to build a tiny home off the grid and homestead-- and I am a woman!! There like, WHAT!?!?! I am divorced and I have no kids, just a dog. What do I need a huge house for? I mean really! Makes perfect sense to me.

I'd be very happy building a shit-shack with my Dad if he gave me enough of his time - He's Alive but I doubt that would ever happen. Your Dad gave you so many building and self-confidence lessons to you without saying a word. Show this video to your kids - You're a lucky guy!

It's the other way around with me, I'm the dad and I built my shed with my son. I trained him how to safely use the nail gun and I allowed him to do all the fixing. We both loved the time spent together. Now he's got a gf and I hardly ever see him but our shed still stands and the memories are still there. I couldn't have imagined doing the same thing with my dad, he's never told me he loves me and I'm 46, or my mother in fact. Good luck pal.

Way back in the day many pallets were still made of oak. We would have a man come get them from where I worked and he even offered money but we just gave them to him. one day he invited us over to his place to see what he did with those pallets. he had made the most beautiful oak furniture from old patterns new patterns. most of the pieces you would have thought had come from somebody's well-to-do grandparents! he made the most beautiful furniture dressers cabinets as in China closets with glass! he collected old windows and Incorporated them into the furniture stained glass you name it he made it! he was an incredible woodworker. he made dovetail drawers. everything was done the old fashion way and these pieces of furniture we're going to last a lifetime and be passed down. he let us all choose something. There were three of us. he had made some things with pine also. Oak pallets are hard to find these days. but they were heavy so I always knew to separate them for him. I like the fact that he could use the cheaper ones too. It's just that they have a lot more flaws. And a lot of them are just soft wood not even as good as Pine. but I certainly will never forget what that man did with pallets.💜🐸

Natalie Douglas WOW that's great, never thought anyone would see it. It is one of my favorite memories about a person nobody knew. But made not necessarily nice assumptions about their life or the way they live. I never judged him. He was quiet and didn't really speak he just simply asked for the pallets and one day after many years we got to find out what he did with them. he was an older man and he had learned the trade from his father and grandfather. Who had a very rough tragic life. But they still manage to teach their son and Grandson this talent and he kept it going no matter what. I knew he was a good person but it was nice to see the talent that He had. I was in awe of his work. I'm wondering if he could still be alive I sure would like to find him. If I would have been smarter back then I would have tried to help him sell the furniture he had so much piled up. if we only knew. This hindsight thing is starting to get to me a little bit. or I could have just said you're welcome. I just can't seem to help it.💜🌏🌍🌎

Rl Badger like I said above I didn't think anybody would even see it. I'm not well right now and I'm kind of blind so I use voice to text. And it sure does mess up a lot I get teased. I really wish I could do a better job at telling his story I used to be a fairly articulate writer. I'm trying to figure out how much older he was than myself. he wore the same clothes always and he looked very dirty but his house was well kept very simple. I know a couple of people that I did bring to him paid quite a few thousand dollars for the pieces that they got and I'm talking like the 1980s so he got paid well for those I don't know about the rest there was so much I don't even think he was telling people about his talent I would have liked to have had like a showing! where he could sell off stuff. I almost think he was afraid of losing it because the pallets were disappearing and he put so much time into each piece I don't think he used one Electric Tool I think he did everything by hand there was no electricity out there! Except for the light fixture above but I think he did most of his work in the daytime anyone out about once a month and got pallets at least for us. But we were also more willing to hang on to him for him. I also helped him with his animals I think that's why he let us come get furniture. it's amazing how some people are so talented and never get known and some people are not that talented to become so famous. I'm quite Melancholy today so the story is making me feel sad exclamation point along with the rest of everything else. take care💜🐸

I want saw somebody spray it underneath their enclosed iron bathtub not knowing how much they were spraying in there and how it expands and they actually cracked their bathtub! I was shocked because I was young and it was a seemingly new product to me and they thought they were insulating something we're animals were going into and they use so much that there was no space for it to go and apparently there were no holes from animals. it was shot in underneath it fast and it was so fast that when it expanded the bathtub just shattered a solid iron bathtub! I have much respect for the expanding foam LOL

We tore down old buildings and reused the lumber. One of my main jobs was straightening the nails on an old piece of railroad rail. I came from a large family of twelve children and we didn't have much money. We learned to recycle, repurpose, and re-use at an early age. This was awesome! Thank you both for the documentation of this.

I just came across your channel and I think this is absolutely awesome, the cabin of course but the relationship you have with your dad is heartwarming. I wish there was more of that these days (parents and children being close and there for each other). God Bless you both.

    Son: Bet you you can’t
Dad: Hold my bear you’re comin with me.

Hold your bear? You have a tamed bear? Is he still a cub or is he full grown? What are you... Gentle Ben? No ... wait ... Ben was the bear. Is your bear named, "Ben"?
(yes, I know it was either typo or a spelling mistake, but I couldn't resist)

I love this - so inspiring. I loved the Guiness hanging shelf and the hanging outdoor grill (would like to see that set up) - the perfect saw horse and how crazy was that start of the rope wrapping twirling - so cool - the burning stump was so clever (just gotta be careful it doesn't travel underground if a dry summer), I seemed to guess what was coming next but was waiting for the outhouse - where is that? a mirror ? lol but I guess just to check you are still there. All of it amazing and with your dad (lost my when I was 9yo). Thank you.

here's a tip for anyone building a house like this line the walls inside with paper animal feed bags you can get them from chicken farms or dairy farms ask if you can have them they most times just toss them out .a complete single layer of the bags will stop most drafts and bring the temperature inside the little house up a lot just from stopping drafts . I had a old garage built around 1910 that was built from house scrap and it was ridiculously drafty then I lined it with feed bags from my pigs and chickens and a few from my cows feed by the time I was done I had 4 or 5 layers up stairs and down stairs it raised the temperature in winter by 20 degrees without a heater and I'm in up state New York.

I have been watching your videos now for the last month. I am a construction worker and have 2-3months off at a time during our slow times of year. I am really going to try to build something similar over the next year or so in the back bush on the farm we rent. Just need the ok from our landlord (farmer). Keep up the amazing work on the videos and lifestyle. Can't wait for new vids.

You should live in a landfill? All the free garbage you'll ever need to repurpose! Think of the possibilities! You could make a toilet out of an old rusty bucket, pile garbage bags for a bed, and I'll bet there's a lifetime supply of used toothbrushes!

That was off the hook.... Quite honestly I never watch videos of this length in their entirety..... But I was amazingly intrigued by the ingenuity, expedience and resourcefulness displayed...Specifically like the recycling of items, the construction of saw horses using tree limbs, the mud pencil, a measuring device made out of a tree branch....
Great video guys.... If the SHTF and we were reduced to live in "primitive" conditions, we would do well by having friends like you!!

I’m a home builder and my first instinct was to be critical but after watching more and reading your post, I must say I’m impressed. I would do things a little differently, as I’m sure others have expressed, but well done. I hope you enjoy it and the time spent together for a long, long time. I am building a tree house with my teen daughters and we are having a great time.
