Not Ready to Die had been written and recorded in ten days of a break of A7X's Nightmare touring in 2011 for Call Of Duty: Black Ops' Call of the Dead Zombies map, which it's an Easter egg on. Its lyrics are about an Axis research group which had existed during World War II in its storylines called Research Group 935 who had discovered an element in a meteorite called Element 115 which reanimates the dead and turns them into zombies. The group's head researcher Dr. Ludvig Maxis had used Element 115 on his daughter Samantha to make her able to control the zombies. The lyrics are written from the perspective of Dr. Edward Richtofen, a character who intends to overthrow Dr. Maxis, take control of the zombies, and rule the world. The song's piano breakdown is a sample of the Kevin Sherwood piece Damned which is main menu music of the Call of Duty: World at War Zombies map Nacht Der Untoten and is an Easter egg in other Call of Duty Zombies maps, as is referenced in the song's lyrics, "Damned! Watch the masses fall!". Arin Ilejay had joined A7X shortly into A7X's Nightmare touring after Mike Portnoy had been dismissed, and he'd composed and played drums on the song, as well as A7X's Call of Duty: Black Ops II post-credits song Carry On and A7X's album Hail to the King, before A7X's drummer since 2016 Brooks Wackerman had been hired.
I'm glad that you two love this song!!! A7X are consistently surprising, especially beyond their singles!!! Welcome to the family!!! 💀🦇

This song was made for a Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies map "Call of the Dead". The Song is from the point of view of a character named Dr. Edward Richtofen, who was an insane Doctor (under the influence of the Dark Aether) who helped create the Zombies in game, and manipulated everyone and anything to try to get full control over Group 935 (and the world). Group 935 was a Nazi ran organization trying to do anything in their power to win World War 2 but the zombie outbreak halted everything. The piano part at 7:35 to 7:46 is the Zombies theme song "Damned", which plays when you enter into Black Ops Zombies main menu and was later made into many different versions of the song in later games.

    Radiant eclipse
    And all things will end
    Burn it down

    The wicked end
    Strength of the world
    Almost easy
    Brompton cocktail
    Demons
    Crossroads
    Dancing dead
    Welcome to the family
    Natural born killer

    1. This song was made for the Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies DLC map "Call of the Dead" (which featured Danny Trejo, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Robert Englund, and Michael Rooker as the map's player characters, as well as George A. Romero, the godfather of zombies himself as the map's special boss zombie).
    2. This song marked the beginning of Avenged Sevenfold's relationship with Treyarch, as they continued to make music for Treyarch's Call of Duty games through Black Ops 4.
    - Nightmare (not made for Call of Duty as "Not Ready to Die" was, but is featured on Black Ops 1's final DLC Zombies map, "Moon")
    - Carry On (Black Ops II, as a campaign mode post-credit bonus)
    - Jade Helm (Black Ops III, as a musical background score for Zombies mode)
    - Mad Hatter (Black Ops 4, secret song on the "IX" Zombies map)
I believe Avenged Sevenfold had planned to make music for Black Ops 5 (Cold War), but COVID got in the way (and personally, I hope they come back for Black Ops 6 next year).
    3. Avenged Sevenfold's drummer was Arin Illejay at this point in time. He was their first official drummer after the death of Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan (as Mike Portnoy's work in the studio for them was voluntary, and his time with them live was as a touring drummer). Illejay was replaced shortly after the Hail to the King era by Brooks Wackerman, their current drummer.
    - The Rev passed away in late 2009. Mike Portnoy stepped in to finish recording the Nightmare album with A7X, touring with them as their drummer until they found a permanent one.
    - Arin Illejay was their new drummer by 2011, and stayed until around 2015, when the Hail to the King era ended.
    - Illejay was replaced by current drummer Brooks Wackerman for 2016's The Stage album.
3:00 The screams in this song are *NOT* M. Shadows. They're actually from Johnny Christ, the bass player.
And unfortunately, aside from Carry On and the Hail to the King album, this was the last of Avenged Sevenfold's usual sound. The Stage was very, as people call it "progressive", and the newest album "Life is But a Dream" took that even farther down the wrong direction.

So this is Arin Illejay on drums. I love his style and he wrote the drums for the hail to the king album but the band eventually loved on from his and introduced brooks wakerman. This is also a song made for call of duty zombies so the 9-3-5 reference is to cod zombies! This is my favorite song by the band!

Arin was way more cymbal heavy, i really hated Hail to the King because of that. Arin did not used kickdrums really well, and it made the whole album powerless to me. This drummer is not like him at all... i wish he was that aggressive on the album too... nonetheless, new avenged is too meh... :D

@@Pufferzsola, M. Shadows and Synyster Gates had directed most of Arin's drumming on Hail to the King. They'd wanted him to play specific groove-oriented styles which would suit their classic-styled compositions. It hadn't been his decision to not use many kickdrum patterns on it. The most they'd allowed him to play on Hail to the King is on Planets.

If this is what you want to hear from them probably check out any from the Nightmare album and work back from there. After that things get weird. I like what they're doing now too, but it's different.
So, the timeframe for drummers goes like this.
The Rev, everything up through the self titled (white) album. He passed away as they were wrapping up the song writing for Nightmare.
Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who the Rev liked a lot, took over and played for the studio recordings of Nightmare. He toured with them as well, but there was a disconnect where he thought he was "in", and actually quit Dream Theater. But A7X was still considering it a temporary thing. They went their separate ways with no hard feelings on either side as far as I know. Nightmare's drums were mostly worked out by the Rev, Portnoy worked off of his notes and did a great job IMO. I kinda wish he had stayed on since he would be perfect for the more prog rock direction they've gone to now.
Then Arin Illjay was with them for Hail to the King, which is roughly when this track was recorded. He was ok, but honestly I wasn't sad to see him go.
Brooks Wackerman took over at that point and is their current drummer. I like him a lot, he seems to be able to play a lot of different styles which is good for the direction they've been going since The Stage.

The song was made for Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies. 9-3-5 is an important part of the game. Also the piano sequence is the main soundtrack for zombies. But yeah A7X has done a few songs for COD zombies and they’re all great. The other 2 they’ve done are Carry On and Mad Hatter. All great, but Not Ready To Die was the first and definitely the best.
