      Im really considering getting a LaCroix board because it has a 50 mile range and can do almost 40mph.. would you be able to try and get one and do a review, it's hella expensive but the range, pneumatic tires and the speed seems worth the $3499.99 asking price..

      I had to sell for financial reasons, but it’s a really good company, which often gets overlooked in these reviews. I’m probably gonna get a $1000 board soon, either this or the ownboard.

    Hi Daniel, i have an explanation/solution for your speed wobbling issues with double Kingpin trucks. It happens to you because of the way you put the front foot in the board, it's not centered but right-sided, not covering all the board surface and forcing you to put your weight on your fingers to maintain it straight. so, having it placed at the right makes you turn right way easier BUT, when turning left your front foot can't help because it's not covering the left side of the board, that makes you turn mostly with your back foot. When you use the back to turn that's exactly what gives you unstability, and you can notice it with double kingpin trucks because they turn way more than reverse kingpins needing to control it better. If you place the front foot using all the wideness of the deck and placing your fingers at the left end and your toe at the right end, you will at first feel strange because the way you are used to ride, but soon you will notice you can handle the board much better and make turns more naturally. Just don't skip this advice. It will truly help you and i hope you take it into consideration.

    So my Ranger X2 arrived. I tried it for the first time today and wow man it’s incredible for city riding on wet roads. It gave me a high level of confidence, wasn’t worried about bumps on the road and it is incredibly smooth. The best part is how quiet it is. Damn man I’m used to some loud boards with Boosted, this thing is silent.

I have a few different boards now and I still prefer the Ranger X2 when I want to cruise on the lake - the hub motors are so quiet and smooth and it has no problem hitting the dirt/grass. On average I get about 15 miles of range pushing it pretty hard. Definitely a thumbs up!

    With regards to the DKP trucks, on my X1 it took me about 3 different bushing configs until it carved right, so I definitely recommend changing the stock bushings. The problem with the stock setup is much like Dan described - too twitchy and not confidence inspiring at speed or during deep carves. Now I have them dialed-in I can do high speed carves which hold their line and it feels absolutely amazing, so I HIGHLY recommend playing with your bushings and don't be afraid to try different configs.

    • @gonzoschmalanzo3066
      @gonzoschmalanzo3066 3 роки тому

      That makes no sense. You don’t need dkp for high speed carves. You could be running rkp as tight as you can get them and at high speed you will still be able to carve easily as hard as you want. At speed you don’t need gimmicks to turn, the slightest movement and you’re turning a lot. Now at slow speeds (10 mph or so) this is where dkp comes into play and gives you much more ability than rkp, NOT AT SPEED. At speed it makes zero difference, dkp will only give you an easier time wiping out lol. And if you’re manipulating your dkp bushings to where they’re “stable at speed” then you essentially are losing some of what makes them great at slow speeds, which again makes no sense.

    • @JoeFourMan
      @JoeFourMan 3 роки тому

      @@gonzoschmalanzo3066 that's a lot of words to say you didn't understand what I wrote. I never said you NEED dkp for high speed carves, I said its possible to achieve this with the right config (of course keeping low speed carvability, otherwise whats the point of dkp).

    Great video review, pretty much exactly how feel I about my X2 except I might be a bigger fan of the double-kingpin trucks because I really like them a LOT. There is a slight learning curve to getting comfortable with them but I really like Backfire's implementation, and I appreciated this reviews detailed look. Something I love about the X2 is the sheer *comfort* level of the ride experience overall, and also how incredibly confident I feel while riding it even at high speeds and going on and off road at will!

    Love your reviews, I've been riding a year now so I'm still a noob, but I think you missing the point of turbo.
    If got a G2T.
    The down side of hub motors is cooling. If you could ride in turbo all the time I'm pretty sure the right rider in the right spot could melt the motors.
    That's why the 30 second cool down period is needed too.
    So in turbo torque it's max, speed is not software limited.
    Take that board to max speed in sport mode with a fresh charge, then hit turbo. Maybe that will change your might about turbo.
    For me sport mode what I ride in and is more than I can do anyway so turbo it's Overkill.
    Love your reviews
    Keep it up

    • @DanielKwan
      @DanielKwan  5 років тому +2

      On the RX2 the top speed is still capped at 35 km/h in turbo. That’s fine for me. My main complaint is turbo’s implementation. For example the 30 seconds cool down thing - what if I only use turbo for 5 seconds? Still have to wait 30 seconds to use it again. And other annoyances. The way it’s implemented just makes it very inconvenient to use.

  • @jleebadger

    DK's review only briefly talked about some of my biggest issues with the board:
    1. The remote switches too easily between forward and reverse, which causes people to get thrown off if they're not careful (or haven't taped the switch in place). DK experienced that in the video.
    2. The turbo mode shuts off without any warning, such as a countdown or a vibration to notify the rider that turbo mode will shut off in three seconds. Between this issue and the fact that you can't engage Turbo without letting off the throttle makes turbo more trouble than it's worth.
    3. The remote sends low battery notifications (via vibration) kinda of early and a bit too often. Somewhat annoying, but I wonder if this is by design to encourage riders not to ride till empty and thus preserve battery life.
    4. Rolling resistance is very high which makes it difficult to push manually. Personally, I find this a bit annoying because I like to do a little push start to conserve battery life and get my center of balance established as I start to move. On my other esk8 with a hub motor and PU wheels I have to apply the brakes on one of the hills along my commute, but the X2 goes down the same hill so slowly that I'll actually apply some gas instead.
    5. The board's max speed is kinda slow. Personally think that it'd be better off with a slightly higher top speed as a third speed mode using the S/E button.
    6. The ESC gets pretty hot. This is probably to be expected since it's an AT board and it's cooling options are limited. However, it does make me wonder about the board's durability. I guess time will tell.
    7. Overall water resistance is questionable. Other riders on Reddit have noted that their remotes stopped working for a few days after it got wet, so it makes me wonder if Backfire skimped on waterproofing the remote's internal components.
    8. Riding through bad terrain reduces your speed drastically. While this is to be expected, I didn't think it'd reduce it down to about 40% of the board's max speed on asphalt. Given how the ESC throttles the board's speed at lower battery levels, I'd be hesitant to take this out for any extended ride on rough terrain. Just keep this in mind if you're considering the board for riding on mtb trails, which is probably a bag idea because the board lacks any real suspension.
    9. There's very little information on how to optimize the board's double king pin trucks (DKP). Although Backfire advises not to adjust the trucks, that's not reasonable as riders of different weight and skills require different settings. I'll probably swap out the board side bushings for something a bit harder and maybe barrel shaped. One annoyance with the DKP is that a standard skate tool cannot adjust the boardside bolt, so you also need to carry a small wrench with you during your first rides as you dial in your ride.
    Other than those issues, DK's review is super thorough and addresses about every topic.
    All that being said, the board is absolutely fantastic. It handles all the rough roads along my commute well and it amazingly even handles train tracks that'd otherwise throw me off my other esk8. The ride is super buttery and a lot less taxing on your feet. The brakes perform very well and can take you from top speed to a stop in about half the distance that my other board requires, which makes it a safer ride for commuting through traffic where cars will try to cut you off.

      I just got mine days ago. I found the ESC got pretty hot too. Even the battery case is hot too. And for the speed mode, I can only use S mode. On E mode the brake is too weak. @@puluzusa467 If you want to keep the ESC cooler, you can stick a bunch of small heat sink fins with thermal glue. I ride G2T on turbo all the time with older remote and did just that to help dissipate heat better. Can't say by how much, but they get pretty warm so I like it.

      Yes the hub motor wheels should be far less likely to get sand in the drive system. But be aware that Ranger’s wheels are relatively thin, so they might dig into the sand more easily than say wider pneumatic tires.

    Ho Daniel, I bought the G2T way back when thanks to your advice. Now I need your advice again :D
    Between the Ranger X2 or Ownboard Bamboo GT (maybe get the Evolve 6" kit later too for it), what would you recommend? I loved my G2T but really need something for rough country roads and cobblestones somtimes.
    I'm veering towards the Ownboard as the cloudwheels seems a great mix beween street and AT wheels, then I've got the option to add EVolve pneumatics to it too. Anything I'm missing? Build quality on my G2T was amazing, but I've never seen an Ownboard so cant compare.
    Many thanks man for all your work!

    I had tightened the trucks because at a higher speed it does wobble because of the sensitive nature of the turning ratio.I don't feel comfortable going fast on this board unless the trucks are tightened.It does make it harder to do sharper turns but I'm a noob,this is my very first board and I bought it because of your review.I am getting better at higher speeds and carving but carving at a higher speed or even standing straight at higher speeds is tougher with the truck set by the factory.The board does wobble but that also might be my lack of experience.I am used to the way a snowboard reacts and this is way different and slamming on pavement at a high speed will hurt like hell vs sliding on snow.

    • @jleebadger
      @jleebadger 5 років тому +1

      To prevent speed wobbles make sure your putting more of your weight on the front of the board. That being said, be sure to shift your weight back a bit before braking so you don't fly off.
      Highly recommend wearing a helmet and if you're risk averse consider getting a motorcycle hoodie that has built-in pads for your elbows, shoulders, and spine, but looks like a normal hoodie.

    • @jleebadger
      @jleebadger 5 років тому +1

      The board fits into the trunk and backseat of a Honda Accord. It's a bit bulky and the big wheels make it almost impossible to lean against a wall vertically, but that easily solved by either leaning it on its side horizontally or buying a cheap guitar stand. When walking into my office building I just mall carry it and roll it behind me like a suitcase. Do note that it's got a lot of rolling resistance and you're better off calling Uber if the board dies on you because pushing manually would be pretty miserable.
