- Large scale placer mining at Flat Bear Placer mine. My friends at Flat Bear invited me up to film for a day while they process huge amounts of pay dirt and recover huge amounts of gold! This is the same mine I visited last year when I did the video on Pinolite. You all asked to see more of the gold mine, so here it is! Part 1 of 2.

Thanks, Dan. Miners do the bizzo and it's good that they clean up behind them now. Folks gotta love trees!
"How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver! " - (Proverbs 16:16) Great video brother! 👍
Great video! Thanks Dan! Thank you Flat Bear Placer Mine people!
I'm a geologist and never heard of penolite. very cool rock!
this is going to be another great Dan Hurd video
I went to Ruby Alaska for a month and I got to run all this big equipment. Dan you have to try it. Especially the excavator
That pinolite is beautiful!
Dan, you are awesome! How you break down the process is so educating. I am so psyched to see your next one now with that teaser at the end
I know it adds cost to reclaim, but in glad theres people that bring back/recreate nature.
Dang Dan...hechuva cliffhanger sir!!!! Can't wait!
been watching dan's content for years now. I gotta say this mans energy never fails to put me in a better mood, it really is contagious! Keep doing what you do Dan!
Birthday? Happy Birthday Dan! Say Dan, can you tell us or have them tell us, what is the history of the name "Flat Bear"? Hopefully it's both funny AND interesting!
I've found penolite in BC years ago nowhere near where you guys are. Beautiful stuff.
Good morning from Southeast South Dakota
Es un excelente lugar para buscar Oro amigo excelente video saludos desde Colombia 🎉
The dog at 15:34 is the goodest boi
How long until they are done mining and reclaiming that site? Great video as always Dan.
Me and my misses want to sell our houses and move to Canada we are from the UK and we hate it here I can and will work my arse off. Some day I will have my dream job 😅
id like to see this site 10 months from now
I'm surprised nobody has come out with equipment to let artisanal miners have some real-time indication of what's in their sluices or other concentrators without having to open them up and look with their eyes. It seems like it would be useful to be able to say "oh hey, there were several visible pickers in that last shovel/truck/bucketload, where did it come from?," but maybe with an operation on this scale that's not relevant, and not cost-effective for smaller scales.
That opening made me nauseous Dan good graphics
Tailings payload bags $0!
Hey Dan, have you ever heard of "cave pearls"?? I was watching this video from Lost Mines this morning and it was really interesting. I guess sulfides or metal or other minerals roll around in a little soft spot in the bedrock as the water is flowing through and as they continue to roll it often shapes them into almost perfect spheres. I swear you can also see flakes of gold laying on the bedrock next to most of the "nests" of pearls they show too. ua-cam.com/video/7EAf8NdWKPQ/v-deo.html
You come to see gold and stay for the gem stones, all your content is awesome. Stay healthy and keep the content coming dan
I liked my own reply
Great to see some behind-the-scenes footage of responsible placer mining. The people and government officials of BC need to see more of these types of operations to understand the full story, not just cherry picked data points! Regardless, thanks for showcasing such a beautiful area and the stunning pinolite.
Anyone else think Dan Hurd is related to Bob the Builder?
Dan - "Can we dig it?"
"Yes we can!"
Dan - "Here comes another bucket! I LOVE IT!"
Can we pan it? Yes we can. And gold right there that tiny piece is a sign there might be gold here! Oh wait that's pauly
if only you had a picture of the mine before the reclaiming started, then people could appreciate the work your friends are doing
I’d like to see it when the forest reclaims this area but none of us will live to see that
@saner6888 It was mentioned that in 15 to 20 years the area will be reforested.
@@Jeff.78There will be lots of small trees, but that doesn’t make a forest.
@@Jeff.78 yes the trees will be approx 10-15 ft tall, it won’t look the same till many decades after
@@saner68885-10 years brush will over take it, 20 years there'll be 50 foot tall trees, it takes no time at all for nature to reclaim, it just needs a push.
The government should really be encouraging this kind of thing. Re-opening old claims with the agreement that it'll be reclaimed to modern standards. It would get a lot more sites reclaimed if you can make a little cashola for your troubles
Exactly! Also, it's definitely cheaper than the government doing it. I did forestry/logging reclamation in my teens/20's, and it's amazing to go back there now for a weekend of camping in the forests my old crew and I helped replant.
Sounds like a win-win to me!
In the US the USGS just realeased some satellite data. Only four states have been released as of 10/23/2023
I like it better than what people have done to Africa. You’re setting a good example.
@@Clarence_13x I mean, if you're talking about The DRC, their mining policy is definitely not the worst part about that whole situation
Looks a right mess, but with help from Joe an co giving nature a push, in 10 years time it’ll all be green
I got a piece of pinolite from an old family friend who was friends with Joe. She was there when it was first found. RIP Judy😢.
Dan, thank you first and foremost for being an advocate and ambassador for the private and commercial gold mining and other precious stone and minerals industry to the every day layman. The showmanship you show on UA-cam is both entertaining and informative. Just want to say I appreciate your content. May your gold pan overflow with abundance.
Close to what I figured in gallons , just over 200 gallons a day .
The Pinolite is just stunning stuff .
That is a really good business model. Go to a place where there are guaranteed profit with modern techniques and equipment and clean up someone elses old mess while making money.
Make nature a better place and make people happy and earn money. Win-win.
Since these guys aren't just mining their own stuff, but cleaning up a mess left behind by others, do they get any breaks from the Gov? On taxes or licensing or stuff like that?
Amazes me they don't need to leave a deposit or something, so that they're encouraged to come back and tidyup
They do. You have to post a reclamation bond before a permit is ever issued.
There was a beautiful dog there too - rough collie type - that I would like to have seen more of!
That was a great video. I'm happy to see an old mine get reclaimation work done.
Thanks Dan for your Awesome Content ! Thank You also to the Miners for allowing us to see their claim ! Keep up the good work 👍
What a nice small man crew plan of Op. I love they’re doing the reclamation as they go. I know many locations in my locale that never got this treatment and it’s nice to see it’s happening abroad now. It’s very expensive but a necessity for sure. 👍🏽
Pretty sure they are obligated by law to do it in Canada.
Great episode as always Dan, always makes my day to see gold.. I wish you a lot of handful nuggets on your claim aswell!
Amazing jobs⚒️⛏️❤
I'm sorry that the video didn't give us all the time to say our goodbyes. Happy birthday, Dan 🎉 May you have a year of golden nuggets! Thanks for joining Dan today and I pray that all of you have an awesome week ❤
Thank you, and you too!
And you as well beloved of God 🙏
@@OGRocker1 I first read beloved of Gold 🤣

1:21 Please, Dan, tell your friends to NOT weld those lines on the buckets. For the love of all that's holy. It's impossible to cut with a gas torch, since it's stainless steel and it creates microscopic cracks in the steel below, actually shortening the buckets lifetime.
To properly fix it, cut out the thinned sidewall panels and replace them with hardened steel. I think in north America you can get Hardox 450 or AR 500. It's the same thing really. Preheat the steel with a blowtorch to 150 C before welding. Don't use electrodes, MAG process only.
That would be a dream job for me, and I even have a motor home and my own track loader, but "things" get in the way of me applying for such a wonderful job.
Therefore, I shall just be hoppy to mine my own iron vein as it is here on my farm and does not interfere with my pe-existing life commitments.
Gorgeous raw gold Dan i also like the stones youve been talkin about might have to get me one one day
Back in the mid-1990's I worked at a coal washing facility in KY & I operated heavy equipment such as on this video. Not the excavator but large end loaders, the articulated trucks, & we also had 777B Cat rock trucks. The 777's had a huge V-12 diesel & I remembered that they had a 250 gallon tank which would run dry in about 10 hours of operation. I had to use a ladder to climb up & take the fuel tank cap off & it took around 20 minutes for a 2" diameter hose to fill the tank & kick off. It's crazy how much fuel that large equipment uses!
Collision tech here and like it’s said in my trade the vehicle needs to leave in pre-accident condition. Seems the same as what you talk about and are pointing out their doing there best to make it look like it never happened there at all
If we use electronics it is important to recycle it when it breaks down beyond repair or when buying new tech. I do recycle!
I personally don't have one of those personal spyware devices.
But then I'm not the one crying foul of mining as it is what I live for! [even if I am not presently able to do it for a living just yet].
Thank you Dan for another awesome video with lots of gold that big nugget was oh my I started drooling six stars brother
Grrr! I wanted the video to go on and not have a part 2! I could watch you all day 😊
I respect the hell out of people who are making sure the land goes back to nature once they leave. Too often I see people come in and strip it and just leave when done.
In Canada reclaiming the site is the Law I believe..Most do it because they are legally obliged.
@@markhepworth Apparently not in the States but could vary between states. I have a couple of areas here where a company stopped mining and left the land as is.
@@wizarddragon Well Yeah, that’s the US...not exactly world renowned for its stewardship of the environment..🤷♂️
@@markhepworth So very true.
Very cool to see, thanks for sharing Dan.
God bless you Dan!!! I love your videos!!!
Completely amazing. Restoring the land, and getting the gold at the same time. There should be government grants to fund some of this work.
AWESOME!
Beautiful stones (penolite)!!!
Very nice mine story. Thanks for sharing!!
🎉 Happy birthday to the bearded prospector. Hope for many more years of adventures AWESOME. DAN. HAVE a bite of the Golden cake again
Always an enjoyable and entertaining video.
I'm irritated that Dan has to spend SO much time and effort explaining away the stupid comments by armchair experts criticizing the people who are actually in the field doing the work. If Dan didn't have permission, he wouldn't be grabbing someone else's gold, much less FILMING HIMSELF DOING IT. If they have a lot of water running through their sluice, they've already invested the time and effort fine-tuning the process for maximum practical recovery. You can tell because they have hundreds of thousands of dollars and men and material on the site. Basically, if you're not there doing the work, your opinion is worth exactly what Dan pays for it. Nothing.
All those beautiful washed stone's perfect for garden's , drive-way's and the larger stone's for paving , every excavator bucket full would be around $100 here in Victoria, Aus. Cheer's.
Let's find Gold. Over here, over there, it's everywhere .
I can only wish you luck. Regards 🇿🇦.
Penemuan yang luar biasa tidak seperti batu yang saya temukan di tempat saya
23:41 We need mines! :) It was explained to me in this manner ....
There's only TWO ways to get stuff ("Stuff" Meaning literally anything and everything you have) You either 1: GROW it and harvest it off the land ... or 2: You dig it or pump it out of the earth.
Hey Dan, try adding 'penalite" however you spell it, to the vid's keywords. It could drag a bunch of traffic you wouldn't normally get. Stay stoked
That definitely isn't a reclamation project... That is 100% an active mine...
Think of how much they’d make on 5 gallon pay dirt buckets
LOL! I would be cleaning those tailings! Even though it is 1%, an operation that big, means a big 1%. You should have asked to pan it Dan!
Love the reclamationed efforts! don't hate the workers (miners) hate the system! Self-hate is not the way to go, especially when environmental destruction is because of capitalism, not people.
Dan I just got my Christmas pay dirt for $25 pan it very happy got little gold and everything else you promised had $50 worth of fun...
That was very interesting.!!!!Hope you had a very Happy Blessed Birthday
Awesome video as always Dan, thank you Sir. Especially liked the 24:00 minute mark message!
Love your videos. Thank you for talking about talking about reclaiming the land. It would be great to see how you destroy earth, for your benefit.
"Point the finger at yourself."
If only more people were capable of understanding the truth of this.
Don't you find it contradictory to speak of not disturbing the environment when you're panning for gold then turn around and praise the major destruction of entire mountainsides by big machines for "big gold"?
I do....
,,,,holy cats !,,,,,,,,,,,,...what a tour,,,,tnx Dan...for taking us along.....land o' lakes,wi...😮
Well i agree with a lot of what you say the idea that electronics wouldn't be possible with the amount of gold that has been accumulated without mining more is beyond a lie or complete stupidity. Yes, it would cost more but mining more "gold" specifically wouldn't be necessary for quite a long time. Im completely fine with mining especially when reclaimed but i don't like lieing especially when it directly affects the person lieing.
In Noth Dakota we don't have much in the way of gold, in fact we're probably the state with the least amount of gold, and no active mining for what little is actually there....unless under us deeper is a huge gold reserve that's untouched....but I kinda doubt it.
What we do have here is coal and oil. When sites are mined out for coal, the sites get reclaimed, and I've been by a few of them. One would never know that the site was mined after reclamation is completed. It looks like an untouched piece of land. The state in cooperation with the mine companies does a good job of managing the reclamation.
So kudos to the crew here for taking on a reclamation project and utilizing the resources onsite to gain a profit in the process. Good job guys.
Happiest Birthday Dan 🎊🎉🥳🎂 thanks for another great vid. ❤❤
Hi. Im big fan of you sir. Im very inspired from your working even that i have started working on searching of gold.
I remember picking up rocks looking like Pinolite and Flowerstone 35 years ago as a youngster in irrigation ditches. Definitely going to have to go back to my old playground and do some searching 🙂
My question is does the american mining industry have the same regulations as canada's? I'm doing a before and after on this comment to see what I've found in the goog: YUP! Reclamation/reformation of the landscape is paramount!
Good morning from southeastern Ohio
Thanks for visit and ride. So much red tape in any business. Very educational to me. Glad Mother Nature. Is put back in place. Later.
I ran a old 950 cat just like that one there using. Or maybe its a 966, but either or i lov running them. Lot's of power and sound good as well. A newer machine is nice to but I'd prefer older ones. Easy to work on and no worries about having some expensive tech or mechanic to fix them. That would be a kick ass job working up there in the sweet wilderness. Can't wait to see the next show Danomite
From what you said, a high percentage of gold mined, eventually, goes into our electronics?
If we could go back to the days when we didn't have a cell phone we didn't have an electric car we didn't have what we've got today what a beautiful life it would have been.
Seriously!!! Did you ever hear of the band song progression of evil?
I know you've mentioned this before, but your channel is the only one I subscribe to with notifications where I don't get the notifications. Just thought maybe this info could help UA-cam figure that out.
Hi Dan...you should check out season 2 episode 2 of mountain monsters... there is a man on that episode that looks like he would be your "long lost twin brother" ( I paused the show just to see how much he does look like you) 😮😊😅
I used to run heavy equipment reclaiming abandoned coal mine sites that looked worse than that. when we were done it was a vast improvement. I checked it on google earth and you can't tell what used to be there after 15 years. I wish I had an RV, I'd sign up now.
Hi Dan, thanks for the details of what's going on at this old mine. I'm one of those people who don't really like to see these huge machines digging up the earth to extract gold, but with the explanation given by you and your friend Joël, I didn't know that this kind of practice was going on, rehabilitating an old mining site, I was thinking mainly of the destruction of the environment, but I understand that in fact, even if they take advantage of the reclamation of the site to mine and extract gold where it was 'left' or forgotten by the former operators, they are trying to restore the natural appearance of the site. I don't know if it's really effective - you'd have to come back in 15/20 years' time - but hearing this explanation makes my heart sink a little less when I see the state of the site as it was when it was filmed, and I hope that in the end this site (and others that are being treated in the same way) will really be restored to the same magnificent appearance as can be seen around it. In fact, I'm a little less disappointed when I watch this video and I have to thank the current operators/reconstructors for doing what they do, and if they make money doing it, that's fine with me. 😉👍
Hi Dan , love your videos , really great content , this one was awesome . You can really appreciate the effort of those boys put into land recovery and the fact that the boys aren't just wrecking the place , well done guys . Dan , now I'm from New Zealand and I would be very keen to get my hands on a slice of that beautiful Pinolite to process into a couple of pieces of jewellery , could we come to a deal to get some and how do we get in contact with you ? look forward to hearing from you .
1% on the fine loss is being nice, I'd wager closer to 10-20% loss in fines alone due to the color and quality of the tailings. 23:52 is what tailings should look like. Very clean
Cant wait for the heli prospecting video! Id love to work a placer mine, Ive run equipment for a living for 15 years and its a dream to have a placer mine someday
I'm always wondering, with such big operations. Do they need to restore nature after ?
woo hoo can't wait to see part 2 :)and Happy Birthday Dan may you have may more 🎉🎂🎊 . SKK .
Maybe someone can tell me why they don't crush a good majority of the rocks that are coming out of the sleuth machines? I would think there would be plenty of gold inside the rocks that are surrounding the gold found in the enjoining sand.
Nice video, I worked building the Kensington near Juneau
Loved the talk at the end, demand necessitates the mining process. Thanks for reclaiming.
Dan, my man! There was a vase made of pinolith found in Egypt from an early dynasty! And yes, your videos were very clear and I am sure it is the pinolith you showed us.
“They’re watching me do this” *gold miner ominous laugh*
There's some great specimens there Dan, Great video!
Totally agree with your words at the end.
