So he has to say it with her necklace, just to unwind a bit, take it off his chest, saying the selfish thing and then sort of taking it all back by compelling her to forget therefore minimizing the damage. He unburdens, but she doesnt have to make any choices about it because she wont remember. What he says is selfish, because its about himself and his feelings for her but what he does is not, he releases her from the pressure of acting on his feelings. He unburdens without burdening her as a result.
It's all about his feelings, not Stefan's or Elena's. That's why it's so huge when she remembers this moment. It's coupled with the night they first met. One selfish memory, one selfless memory. It helps her understand there's a right time to be selfish. To put yourself first.
is it just me, or his eyes started tearing up when he kiss her forhead? i was literally screaming when i first saw this. i was like GO DAMON!!! TELL HER!!!! i ship them so hard and im glad they ended up together. i was shiping them from the season 1 episode 1!!! He truly cares about her
I can't get over this scene. What an enormous step toward the light for Damon. That he managed to be that selfless, that he would sacrifice his own happiness for Elena's and even Stefan's. To me, in that instant, he BECAME WORTHY of Elena. I can't wait for her to remember this. She has to remember it at some point. It's too profound for her not to know. Kudos to Nina, but most particularly to Ian for an extraordinary performance. I totally cried at this. Sigh...
