If you didn’t know if you hold your the l bottom then you will have a item behind you and the item will save you like say you got a green shell to throw at someone you can put that behind your cart and when a player throws a item at you the item behind your cart will block it
Tip #9 When you get zapped by the Lightning item, you Will become small, making you also become slow. Depending on which place you are in the race (1st, 2nd, 3rd) you will regain your full size more quickly or more slowly than other racers (1st place regaining full size last). If you regain full size before a racer around you, you can drive over them, which makes their vehicle stop!
you can also dodge a shock if you fall out of the world, while lakitu is bringing you up if a shock comes out of know where your invinsibility frames will save you, however it requires alot of R.N.G.
My tips: -Go without smart steering! Once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to go way faster and get those sweet pink boosts. -If you're getting the coin item from every item box, quit using the coin! If you hold onto it, your next item won't be a coin as you can't have two coin items at the same time. -When you're in first place, don't hold your items behind you until you know you need to because someone is trailing you or a shell is on its way. The blue shell won't take your item if you are just holding it. -If you're falling behind, trail the racer in front of you. You will get a large boost and race ahead of them!
@@Annihilasian But you shouldn't be able to be holding two coins. Like, if you're holding a coin and you hit an item box, you will still be holding a coin but the other item will be something else.
Here's my 10 cents: in addition to being able to pull up or down when using gliders, you can also do the same thing without gliders when you're on a regular jump. Usually you want to come down as fast as you can because you're typically faster on the ground, however, especially with a lightweight character, you can sometimes take shortcuts and skip large sections of track if you pull up.
I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think after you get struck by lightning your speed stays relatively the same while gliding, meaning you want to stay in the air as long as you can when that happens.
Little tip about the coins; if you get a coin box it actually gives you 2 coins. When you collect 3 coins in a row in a race, you get a pretty nice boost. So when you have a coin block, drive into 1 (or more) coins and activate it right after hitting the coin. First I thought coin boxes where shit, but they provide some easy boosts.
cause there is no tutorial on how to be a good player. learn the basic techniques like drifting, defending and tricking and study the best ways to move in courses. after that you need high consistency and the ability to read situations well in order to use your items effectively.
There is actually 5 weight classes. Featherweight, Light, Medium, Heavy, and Cruiser. Featherweight has the best handling stats. Light has 3-4 in each category but has better stats in handling. Medium as averaged out stats. Heavy has more grip than any other weight classes. Cruiser is the heaviest class and has very very slow acceleration but it's top speed is 10/10

This is my tip: You can hold back on your drift by trying to turn in the opposite direction your drift is going to, if your drift is making you go to the left, try to go to the right, if your drift is making you go to the right, try to go to the left. This will make you turn slower on your drift so you can get drift on smaller turns, BUT it does make you get drift slower.
Tip #8, in 200cc BREAKING IS ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL! When they say breaking is highly recommend, they’re not kidding. It help when encountering tight turns that would normally be tolerable in 150cc. Bonus tip: Some turns in 200cc would require an even tighter turn; breaking while drifting doesn’t always work. The best way to get that sweet drift master turn is to not use the mini boast to speed up by letting go of A just when that tight turn comes. This is especially useful in rainbow road
A few things to add 1. You failed to mention that not all start boosts are the same. Getting closer to the perfect time will give you a longer boost, up to the equivalent of a mushroom. 2. nice tips but i had to say something about your drifting 😂. your supposed to drift as close as you can to the smallest part of the track, not near the large side. drifting on the smallest turn of the track makes the turn much quicker, while drifting on the largest part of the turn does the opposite.
The type of boost you earn from drifting isn’t simply determined by the length of time you drift for. It’s also based on the sharpness of your turn. If you’re drifting left and steering left then you’ll obviously have a sharper turn heading left which decreases the time it takes to receive a better boost. If you’re drifting right but steering left then your turn won’t be as sharp and it will take longer for you to receive a better boost. The time required for the different boosts stated in the video only refer to if you’re drifting but not steering.
My son, 10, showed me a great character/cart/wheels/kite combo. I tested other combos and always came out best with his combo. He is not always the best with book smarts, but he is talented in other ways. I am so impressed by him!
I play a lot of mario kart, and I did know all the thing that were said in this video. I still think this is a very helpful guide for people who are new to the game. I do want to say that not all bikes drift differently than karts, as Arekkz said when talking about karts and bikes. Some bikes have inside drift, these drive very differently, and make much sharper turns. But some bikes have outside drift, which may not be exactly the same as karts, but is very similar.
1 thing I've always wondered since gliders were added: Does weight have any influence on the effectiveness of gliders? I've been assuming lighter characters can stay in the air longer, while heavier characters might benefit more from diving and then pulling up.
Geoffrey Perrin That isn't really important, because most of the time you want to get to the ground as soon as you can. But there are 2 types of gliders: acceleration and speed gliders. There is something called "Hidden Stats" for example Air Speed, Water Speed and so on. The acceleration glider has a bit more acceleration, which you can actually see, if you select one, but the speed gliders have more hidden stats in speed, so you are overall a little bit faster.
MartiSparky As of MK8DX speed gliders now have a visual difference on the stat screen (It was changed from -1 acceleration but +1 weight to -1 acceleration but +1 weight and +1 speed)
Weight does not affect gliders, to stay up longer simply press down, vice verses trying to go down. Also, some glider areas have more of a benefit of staying up and some have a benefit of diving.
You can get different levels of boost off the line depending on how close you are to the sweet spot, about a millisecond after you see 2 will get you the longest boost
Make sure you don’t always trick or jump if bumps in 200CC. And while you’re drifting lightly tap b to make a sharper turn, if you hold it for to long you’ll stop completely. Also read everything in the info menu at the bottom. I know I know, it could be boring but it could help you a lot.
There are actually 5 classes 1.Feather (Toad) 2.Light (Yoshi) 3.Medium (Mario) 4.Heavy (Rosalina) 5.Really Heavy (Bowser) *These are just some examples*
Do the time trials to optimize your lines. I've learned the courses really well and that helped me tons online. Take the inside turn ALWAYS! The outside may have booster plates, but it's still faster to take the inside. Grab the double item box whenever you can, ESPECIALLY when you're in first. It's a rarity that you'll get double coins. However, there's a huge chance one of those is a coin and the other is something you can defend yourself.
Coming from a pretty decent Mario Kart DS/Wii player, most of this is already known, but there was also much that I learned from this video. Good on you for giving us a helping hand.
I have one tip for everyone, load up a time trial for any map, download the fastest ghost you can find and then view that ghost. Study what they do, then race the ghost in a time trial. Use all the tricks they use. Practice. Then, pick a new map, rinse and repeat. I guarantee its the fastest way to shave down those times

I’m thinking I’ll see if I can get the system for my birthday (in May) , so I’m watching videos in the interim to improve more while I wait. Mwahahaha.
@@SunflowerSpotlight Nice! I'd really recommend it. People say the switch is better than the Wii U, but you can get the Wii U for less money, and (most of) the games are kind of the same.

Are you serious? A translation difference? LOL. You do a jump (and a trick by hitting the button) and get a boost. Call it whatever you want, we all speak English.
I think they were called tricks in MKW, dunno on MK7 as I never played it, but in MK8 they seem to call them jump boosts in this game. I still say tricks tho.
2:17 to 2:19 Tip #8 After going off the ramp you can preform a trick when going through the hoop. This can also be done on maps such as the Ski slope one.
In 200cc things are very different. Pick lightweight characters for high acc. Use the brake while drifting to keep in control, and drift on tight corner jumps. Aside from that, great vid!
number 2 is NOT true. For some trick ramps, if you trick instead of just keep drifting, you might hit the wall for going too fast. And by drifting more, you’ll get a larger boost. *in 200cc.
When you want to know how everyone is thrashing you, then you watch a video that describes everything you’ve been doing anyway: 👁👄👁 I must be so bad at Mario kart
Hey 9:13 the time for a drift boost depends on where your going if you to left boost and turn left your fire wheels will change faster but if you do a right drift and go left the time it has to change Is longer. Sorry for calling you out on that but it’s true. TO ALL YOU MARIO KART FANS
I don't agree much with #6. I think this game is all about picking the character and kart that you love, no matter if the stats are bad cuz you still have a chance at winning. #fashionkart
Been coming and going to this channel for a while mainly because of destiny videos got a switch two weeks ago and your videos for zelda and mario karr are way better then anything youve done for destiny, really hope to see super mario odyssey on this channel when it comes out
My two cents: although coins are important, it is actually way less important than your trajectories. Knowing how to corner all your turns is the number one tip. You will always be better at 0 coins and good corners than someone with 10 coins and bad trajectories. I can see in the video that you often go out of your way for coins or don't corner properly: that ends up with a lot of time lost at the end of the day. Only once you master how to corner and all the good trajectories of all maps that you can start thinking about how to get more coins fast.
Good stuff Alex! I've only played a little and was getting destroyed for most part. This should help. Didn't know half of these little tricks. BIG THANKS!!!
My Tip would be: If you're in first place and get a coin, don't use it right away. When a Buu Huu takes your item, it will be the first in your inventory so you can protect your shell or whatever from Buu Huu's stealing it. Very good against upcoming redshells. Downside is you can get hit by a greenshell because there is no warning if one comes towards you.
A good thing to note on #4 is that the cart specs are incremental. You only get the next level of stat per every full segment of the gauge that is filled. So that tiny bit into the next bar for top speed could be allocated elsewhere when choosing your glider and bump up your acceleration into the next tier for example. If there is a turn coming up after a jump, you can hold the drift button and the direction you want to drift into and you will start drifting in that direction when you land. Lastly when you are in those anti grave parts of the track where you go hover mode, you can get boosts by bumping into other carts. Keep in mind that its better to bump into lighter karts than yourself because you may get thrown around bumping into bowser as baby mario. Where as if you were the heavy bumping into a medium/light or medium into the light, they will get pushed around and you don't loose momentum and get more out of the boost. Other than those thats a pretty good top 7 tips. My add-ons are more in depth mechanics lol
if you want the starting boost (the one at the very start of a race), click the button (the arrows, X, or A (depends on which joycon u use)) when you see "2" and then you get the boost hope you find ths helpful.
One tip in regard to the items, if you are holding a bomb and a red shell is on its way, let drop the bomb shortly before you anticipate the shell to hit you so you can get out of the blast radius before the bomb goes off. Also, holding the steering Joystick/button backwards will drop/throw items behind you and doing the same but forwards will throw the items in front of you.
Thanks for this. I asked for MK8D for christmas along with a Switch and BotW instead of Mario Odyssey for the sake of playing with my little brother on the switch. Personally for me a lack of depth and this game seeming like more of a party game you play with a bunch of friends made this game not seem worth the money, but seeing this amount of depth in a seemingly simple game will soften the blow a little.
Adding on to not using the items, if you save your coin powerups in the upper levels, since you cant get another coin, you will always get a good item from the item boxes

the extra length in some cases could result in a purple drift boost though. other than that, I agree
It also depends on your vehicle.

Haven't played Mario Kart since SNES. This video (after figuring out how to turn off auto steering) was huge.

@@dailybread7687 How are you playing mario kart 8 on your phone?
Hi, great video, I just wanted to say that this shortcut in the Mount Wario at 7:58 doesn't need a mushroom, you can always take it.
My son, 10, showed me a great character/cart/wheels/kite combo. I tested other combos and always came out best with his combo. He is not always the best with book smarts, but he is talented in other ways. I am so impressed by him!
Whats the combo?
Geoffrey Perrin some gliders can give you more weight.
MK Wii veteran here, I haven’t played in so long I felt like this was my first Mario kart game
You can get different levels of boost off the line depending on how close you are to the sweet spot, about a millisecond after you see 2 will get you the longest boost
Your choice of kart and wheels has a significant impact on how long your boosts after drifting last
Thanks 👍 didn't know
Make sure you don’t always trick or jump if bumps in 200CC. And while you’re drifting lightly tap b to make a sharper turn, if you hold it for to long you’ll stop completely. Also read everything in the info menu at the bottom. I know I know, it could be boring but it could help you a lot.
I’m not good enough to have to worry about blue shells😂
Thank you, as a new racer on the track i didnt know carts had stats
There are hidden stats
There are actually 5 classes
1.Feather (Toad)
2.Light (Yoshi)
3.Medium (Mario)
4.Heavy (Rosalina)
5.Really Heavy (Bowser)
*These are just some examples*

My brother was kind enough to let me borrow his system while he was home for the holidays. I was mostly stuck in my room sick, so he wanted me to have distraction. He also wanted me to play on his account so he’d get first place trophies for all the 50cc tournaments and half the 100cc tournaments, lol.

Thanks for the video! We just bought a Nintendo Switch yesterday and my MARIO Kart play stopped after the N64, so this was a great refresher of old and new info.
ik it might be a translation difference, but we call jump boosts in australia tricks?
starry moonlit galaxy orbit
I live in the US and I call them tricks.
Are you serious? A translation difference? LOL. You do a jump (and a trick by hitting the button) and get a boost. Call it whatever you want, we all speak English.
I call it tricks too, I dunno I think everyone calls it that, except for him.
I think they were called tricks in MKW, dunno on MK7 as I never played it, but in MK8 they seem to call them jump boosts in this game. I still say tricks tho.
Funny, because 'trick boost' seems like the most accurate way to describe it.
2:17 to 2:19 Tip #8 After going off the ramp you can preform a trick when going through the hoop. This can also be done on maps such as the Ski slope one.
We should race dude, lemme know ;)
Bruh never knew u played Mario kart
Lol
Can’t forget about drift brake. Quick tap on b while you’re drifting to drop your speed and hit corners even tighter
i watched this video in hopes of improving my skills but i already knew all of these tips 😂
I’m definitely in the camp that takes this stuff for granted but nice video for newcomers to the series :)
u forgot the "use brakes in 200cc" tip
In 200cc things are very different. Pick lightweight characters for high acc. Use the brake while drifting to keep in control, and drift on tight corner jumps. Aside from that, great vid!
number 2 is NOT true. For some trick ramps, if you trick instead of just keep drifting, you might hit the wall for going too fast. And by drifting more, you’ll get a larger boost.
*in 200cc.
Thank you sooo much!! Deluxe is my 1st Mario Cart I've ever played. I see all the videos of tricks price pull off and didn't know how to do them.

Hey 9:13 the time for a drift boost depends on where your going if you to left boost and turn left your fire wheels will change faster but if you do a right drift and go left the time it has to change Is longer. Sorry for calling you out on that but it’s true. TO ALL YOU MARIO KART FANS

Been coming and going to this channel for a while mainly because of destiny videos got a switch two weeks ago and your videos for zelda and mario karr are way better then anything youve done for destiny, really hope to see super mario odyssey on this channel when it comes out
why not just title this "how to play mario kart 8"
My two cents: although coins are important, it is actually way less important than your trajectories. Knowing how to corner all your turns is the number one tip. You will always be better at 0 coins and good corners than someone with 10 coins and bad trajectories.
I can see in the video that you often go out of your way for coins or don't corner properly: that ends up with a lot of time lost at the end of the day.
Only once you master how to corner and all the good trajectories of all maps that you can start thinking about how to get more coins fast.
And tap l quikly if you hit a item box gives you the item earlier
wow I didn't know that

@@galoomba5559 Yes it does, you are somehow doing the unimaginable and managing to do something wrong if it isn't working for you.

@@rust7953 i know, i was joking about how rare it was
7:58 that brings so many memories from mario kart 7, there was a similar shortcut
Thank you so fricking much for this! Its helped alot. My 24 year old brother gets beaten all the time by me hahaha he doesnt understand how 😂😂😂
A good thing to note on #4 is that the cart specs are incremental.
My add-ons are more in depth mechanics lol
this was proven false. This is true in 8, but not 8 delux. i'll try to find the video i saw that proved this
I do everyone of these
if you want the starting boost (the one at the very start of a race), click the button (the arrows, X, or A (depends on which joycon u use)) when you see "2" and then you get the boost
hope you find ths helpful.
You said everything that everyone knows
Thank you. The drift boost helped me soooooooo much! This video was super useful!
I stopped watching after he threw both items from the first item box in first place.
These seem like tips meant for absolute beginners.
Tip#1 Be Irish

Thanks for this. I asked for MK8D for christmas along with a Switch and BotW instead of Mario Odyssey for the sake of playing with my little brother on the switch. Personally for me a lack of depth and this game seeming like more of a party game you play with a bunch of friends made this game not seem worth the money, but seeing this amount of depth in a seemingly simple game will soften the blow a little.
I only need one tip. Git gud.
I needed none. You hit gud
Adding on to not using the items, if you save your coin powerups in the upper levels, since you cant get another coin, you will always get a good item from the item boxes
This youtuber is color blind for sure! Drift colors = Blue Orange & purple (not what he said Blue "right" yellow "wrong" pink "super wrong"
Meguroko Sylveon Well in his defense, they do sorta look yellow, and pink
You certainly have no idea what color blindness actually is/can be.
Meguroko Sylveon it does kind of look like yellow and pink
How it looks to me: blue, orange and pink. This is just what I think it looks like
This was super helpful because you not only explained what to do but also how to do it! Thanks for that!
Second
if u get a coin and nothing else in first, hold onto it so that u are guaranteed to get a defensive item in the next box
If there is a very sharp turn i would recommend drifting early
