Yep! First time! In three days! Day 1+2 were ~125km each, day 2 had a special 18% epic hills section, then day 3 was an adventurous 321km from the city south, west, north along the coast, east into the hills then south along the hills then west and back north into the city- smashing my previous longest ride (135km) by a few bike lengths and making a lifelong memory. Great challenge. Some of the guys in the 300 group ended up doing over 1000! We are lucky to have beautiful summer weather down here in Perth Australia at this time. Top effort lads, great content once again.
Id reitterate @Tecno Ciclista why is Joe riding his mtb for this? if you want to get the most miles I would think that a roadbike or at least a cross bike would be the choice.
I had to work over christmas, so I couldn't spend those hours on the bike. So I decided to do 50 kms of running which was quite nice too. Next year, it shiuld be the 500km on the bike

Yep! Second time, in 6 days. I'd have preferred gravel instead of paved roads, but there was just too much snow for proper riding ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I had holidays and the wife’s support. So to celebrate my 5th festive500 I decided to do a festive1000. I managed it just doing 1033 in the 8 days including lots of elevation and lots of different mates helping me smash out the km’s. I don’t think I’ll ever try it again but it’s good to have done it and added it to the achievement list. Conditions were a bit different to your here in Australia tho. I was just trying to keep hydrated on the 30-35 degree temperatures.
Thanks Lads. Really enjoyed the viewing. Yea, I am up for trying the Festive 500 next year. Living in the mountains here in New Zealand, I need to find some nice coast roads with good cafes. Souldn't be too difficult. Thanks again. Chapeau to you both.
Great video ! Really ,,,, you guys do a great job with the diaries . Have enjoyed each one of them. Maybe one year we will have less snow here in N. Michigan and I can give it a try. Or maybe skate ski the 500 K ,,, ouch !
Great video! I did the 500 for the second time and have to say watching the sucky weather you guys had, I had it much easier in California. You really have to put at least one 100 miler in for sure to get ahead of the curve. I did all 680+ km by myself, which was also great - gives you loads of time to reflect.
I only heard of the festive 500 this year for the first time and it is impressive that so many of you make the attempt every year. Northern hemisphere folks may be a bit crazier than those in the Southern attempting the ride at this time of year though. Thanks for the video!
I hurt for Reuben--it must've been disappointing to add the Festive 500 Crasher patch to his Brownie sash. And that's a grin and a big congrats on the win to Reuben and Joe and all Friends of Reuben and Joe! Just participating means winning, and getting out there and putting in big klicks at the end of the year is epic--and all that off-roading, too, officially jealous. And I sure enjoy your diaries and, for me, no guilt as I reach for another cake from my secret hideaway stash.
Great video, epic achievement. The experience of Reuben looked a bit too familiar to what I did around new year last year, going out on a cold but beautiful day and sliding of the unexpectedly icy road.
did the 500 this year(great fun! weather was mild and dry a big help) over 5 days started on the 24th took the 25th 26th off rode the 27th, 28th, off the 29th rode the 30th, 31th..... mission accomplished !
Any specific reason you are riding your MTBs on the road? It's the last thing I wanted to do, especially with the kind of bikes you must have at your disposal ;)
@Joe Norledge what size chainring? I find anything under 34T and I'm very undergeared! Has bike radar ever compared a MTB to a gravel bike with say a 40T chainring to replicate the gearing minus the aero advantage? Sorry for the long winded question but might be a future vid especially with the MTB miles your getting.
It’s the fourth year in a row that I have completed it. I wasn’t particularly keen this year as it does end up taking you away from time spent with the family. In total I was on the bike for 20 hours, 548km. A large chunk of that was Xmas Eve, Xmas and Boxing Day as I was back at work on the Thursday. Not very social. I see it has improved my fitness as I’d let that slide towards the end of the year. Now it’s back to something like it was before it turned cold and wet. Not sure that I will be able to keep this up tho. Think it might be a few more months before I start upping the weekly mileage.
Have completed 4,500km in the past 10 months (due to covid restrestions) and had targeted 5,000km by the end of this year, however, due to a violent gale here today in the west of Ireland (Boxing Day) you'd wouldn't but a dog outside in case he'd blow away.
What happened to MTB bar ends and the narrow bars. ? Always find they are pretty comfy on longer Road training rides.. Would not want to be stretched out on wide bars in one position myself.
Preparation is key, I agree... I did not ride at all since September so the festive very hard for me. I always try to cover as many km as early as possible (I want to have rest days and family days) and I always take the same flat route. Though I always use assos cento bibs and chamois cream my butt hurt incredibly this year. I was not used to riding any more. 24th: getting up early, 120km flat,. "cool, I am the only cyclist outside" , family time with carboloading afterwards :-) 25th: rest day, sore legs, stretching, family time carboloading :-) I am in a good mood! 26th: butt hurt on the saddle so just 60km in the morning, family time afterwards. Nice. I am the only one outside. Stay at home, idiots. 27th: 100km. Serious butt issues all day. why the hell am I the only one outside?? MAYBE BECAUSE CYCLING AT 0°C IS JUST STUPID! Forget the patch, forget the challenge, it's bullshit! 28th: rest day, butt issues. :-(( 29th: 100km. Just stop thinking and let the pedals spin... 30th: 120km. Finally it's over...

I know that sore-ass feel bro :D Also felt like the only one outside. 0°C isn't stupid, unless you intend to ride in forest. Personally I prefer -5°C down to -10°C :)
@Joe Norledge Thats light! DT Swiss 240s hubs and 24 hole, 6 bolt???? Look forward to watching that. I had a pair of carbon asymmetric wheels built in China last year, 30mm outer 24mm inner with 28h rear 24h front, Pillar aero spokes and power way straight pull hubs 1370g for £400!!! inc shipping and import , I was going to have DT swiss hubs but had just bought the new Sid world cup carbon with the charger damper so was on a budget, Ive smashed them round for a year and they've ridden faultlessly, rear hub pick up isn't as quick as DT but good enough for a 68 kilo 55 yr old!!
Good to see you still flying the Picnic flag Joe. Too much poo talk from you as always though. Ever thought of being a stunt double for Elijah Wood btw?
It will become a worthless challenge next year. I'm sure they will allow imaginary kilometers to count. Apparently there are people that believe you can travel without moving and climb without ascending...
Did you manage the festive 500? Do you have any tips or advice? Let us know in the comments below!

Yep, actually got in around 700 riding to the dairy and back 🚴

Apparantly Joe's xmas was a cake stop with bits of cycling inbetween - well done lads.

I’d never find the time! Good to watch you guys do it though!
I’d especially like gps of those Scottish gravel rides!
Aye me too! Reuben???

Top tip; check what time the cafes close on Christmas Eve, so you're not hunting around needing cake.
Awesome work, fellows!! I always enjoy your videos.

for riding in the winter, there was a lot of riding without gloves!
Great video, epic achievement. The experience of Reuben looked a bit too familiar to what I did around new year last year, going out on a cold but beautiful day and sliding of the unexpectedly icy road.
Nice to see you visiting one of the best cake stops around
Cracking video guys, really enjoyed and good effort all round!

Next week Joe will be testing the new Wahoo Shitr. A smart trainer you can use on the bog. I'll get my coat.........
I didn't do the 500 but I did do my first 100km ride. Made me think about chamois cream.
Do the festive 500 in Australia it's a lot easier
I was thinking festive 500 is ezpz but you guys are doing crazy gravel rides and on mtb's... crazy stuff!
Any specific reason you are riding your MTBs on the road? It's the last thing I wanted to do, especially with the kind of bikes you must have at your disposal ;)
Think Joe said he has a big MTB race coming up in a previous episode so he's probably training for that.
Phil Adams you got it! Both Joe and I will be out racing in Lanzarote end of the month and the saddle time will help 👍
Right? At least throw some slicks on.
Joe Norledge good avg power

I just did a 529 km bike ride up in the moutains and got it done in oen sitting XD
Festive 500 completed (506.7 km 4,795 m 21:35:48 ITT) Properly socially distanced - no cafe stops!
That's a great achievement! We're jealous of all that riding!

Got my 3rd festive 500 done this year. Found it hard this year with the heat we are getting in Australia.
Seriously crushing it!
Great vid! Recognised a few local roads and Oakham Costa 😂
I love these Diaries videos. I don't know why you used a mountain bike though Joe😂

Well done on a MTB nice work. Though part of me doesn’t always like this kind of motivation, as some can and do take risks. HNY🤙
Good one lads well done ,, Shane uk 🇬🇧
What changes did you make to the MTB for all of that road riding? Using the MTB was an interesting choice for 500 kilometers of road riding. . .
Thanks for another good fun informative video. Joe - could you tell me which helmet light you are using with your Evade? Cheers.
7:25 got about 50 cakes to go
I see why it was to easy for me to complete this challenge. The "500" stands for km ridden, not altitude gained ... in meters.
What happened to MTB bar ends and the narrow bars. ? Always find they are pretty comfy on longer Road training rides.. Would not want to be stretched out on wide bars in one position myself.
27.5 km/h average with mountain bike ! :o
Are these carbon models with less than 10kg ?

What recovery nutrition you take since you are going for another big ride the next day
I got hills and a few more hills sprinkled with hills around me.
What tires you use for the pavement when on the MTB?
Wheres the Scott???? with the Schmolke upgrades.... Great vlog as usual ..
Joe Norledge Cool, Silverton SL???? Bikes on a big diet then, look forward to watching that👍🏻
@Joe Norledge Thats light! DT Swiss 240s hubs and 24 hole, 6 bolt???? Look forward to watching that. When it's icy, do you use the Concept2 rowing machine?
I wish I had known about the festive 500 before Xmass 2018 as I had a shit Xmass & would have given it a go but all off road.
What tyres did you use on your MTB?
yeah boyzzz!!!
harsh winter ? come in Canada my friend
Émile Farrell-Dessureault how do I know your my type?
Are you guys using MTB or road pedals ?
How do you like the SRM PC8?
Thanks Joe!
Victoria Sponge Cake..... delicious!
Next year boys travel to Oz, and smash the 500km in beautiful, easy weather.
Is that Alpine cafe >?
Does Joe not have a road bike. Riding on the road with his mtb looks like hell.
600km in Tenerife with 20k meters of climbing!
Good to see you still flying the Picnic flag Joe. Too much poo talk from you as always though.
Ever thought of being a stunt double for Elijah Wood btw?
6hr at .8 IF...5000kj...ouch
100 miles on a mountain bike on the road, aka taking a sharp stick to nuclear war
Christmas poo
4 poos (Christmas or not) doesn't sound healthy. Tom might want to hit the yakult.
Well done Joe, but you could have made it easier on yourself by not riding the 500km on a MTB. 🤔
Hmmm...
I'm using a mtb as a road bike
No gloves? Clap clap clap
500 - 397 = 113 🙊
So knobblies on the road plus no gloves in winter. You clearly enjoy punishing yourself. Well played though.
Cakeradar
I thought it was miles not KM's
No, definitively km. Metric system ftw.
It will become a worthless challenge next year. I'm sure they will allow imaginary kilometers to count. Apparently there are people that believe you can travel without moving and climb without ascending...
I managed 70 miles but I'm a fat sh***
