  • Have you been in your daylily garden and noticed a small, plant-like growth protruding from the scape of certain daylilies? If you wondered what it was, you are not alone. We have been getting lots of calls asking the very same question.
That growth is called a proliferation.
Whether or not a daylily plant produces proliferations depends on the variety. Some daylilies proliferate nearly every year, but most daylilies never do.
Plants have genes and genetic codes just like people and animals. Without getting too "plant science-y", a proliferation is more than just a free plant-it's an exact genetic copy of the mother plant.
Exact genetic copy. That's right- although this sounds like a story line from a sci-fi movie, it's actually much cooler: in case there isn't a pollinator around to do the job for them, certain daylilies are capable of cloning themselves to ensure their survival. Aren't daylilies so amazing?

    ABOUT US:
Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that's been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation- including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you-with one daylily in a home garden.
    .............................
    FARM-FRESH TO YOU!
When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger - two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and produce more blooms quicker.
All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

I was pleasantly surprised when your staff guided me to this video! Received and planted daylilies, bloomed within weeks, although never had daylilies do this my newest "Chester" Cyclone had these on 2 branches! I did plant them and couldn't believe it, new plants! Affectionately call my daylilies by name, however, Chester in my eyes, having babies, is now called Chessie! Lol!

Ha! "Chessie"-- that's hilarious! We love proliferating daylilies (who doesn't love additional daylilies?!). "Chessie" Cyclone is such a beauty we were especially happy to know it was a proliferating variety. So happy you tried planting them. Keep us posted!
