Thanks for the tutorial! By the way, I have found that you can also power the recorder via USB. So if you're recording something that takes a bit longer, you could just plug it into any USB power source and not have to worry about the battery.
You really should record at 24bit all the time. This makes it easier to achieve a good signal to noise ratio and means you don't have to worry so much about headroom.
Of all the videos out there, you're the only one who explains where the decibel meter is (may be kind of obvious, but I missed it when another video recommended setting to -6 decibels) and setting the input level in relation to the decibel meter.
Thanks for not just suggesting what are the best setting on the back should be but explaining why.... It's weird how many people make how to videos and forget to explain why.
Hello. Question; can the line in be used to bring audio from a PA using the stereo output? What I am trying to do is, record both, the music playing on the speaker, while also singing. Thanks in advanced for your help.
In theory it would work if the levels coming from the PA match the line in for the Zoom. But that input is, I believe really a Mic input, not a true line-in. So you'll need to test the PA system to see if they match. If the audio is horribly distorted, it means the PA is putting out too strong a signal for the Zoom. You can buy attenuators that would help with that. Or look for a recorder that offers both line-in and mic in settings. Good luck!
Very good was so helpful thank you I just got h1zoom and just using for fun recording son on stage one question can I get a list of that the best setting to put it on and what each setting dose or what application to use each setting
i just purchased mine, and this video is so helpful for a beginner like me since i do legal transcription :) many thanks for this tutorial, so informative! Two thumbs up!
Great explanation, Can you please tell me connect to connect ZoomH1n and Boya BY M1 lav mic to my smartphone so that I can record Audio and Video in together
This was very useful thank you! One question, when you say it should be consistent to video cameras, do you also mean digital photo cameras that can also be used to record videos, or just strictly video cameras? Thanks!
+Dana Isseh If you're going to record video on any camera, you want the to record your audio at the same sample rate. Almost all cameras record audio at 48khz - whether a traditional video camera or still camera with video ability. So you'd want to record your audio on the Zoom at the same setting. Hope that makes sense.
A great basic tutorial! Thanks for help with the levels. I noticed when I changed the setting to 48/16 it increased my recording time. Always a good thing. I there any way to keep the screen lit? And how about setting the time and date? I saw a screen for that briefly but can't find it now. . I guess I'll just look at the online manual. Thanks for a good vid!
Wetched all the vids on h1,and some mention how to format the card, but how can I delete single files?as I want to keep some files, and not formot of the whole card?
It's not very obvious how to do this. The H1 is different from the H1N. On the H1, play the track you want to delete. While it's playing, press the trash can button. The screen should show Delete? Then press the record button to confirm you want to delete that track.
@@YurmanVisuals yea thanks for that..ok I pressed the Trash can,an Record button, and low n behold..it.deleted the files,1 by 1..thankfull for your Quick response. .and wish you the best

I want to use this mic on my Canon 6d camera to record sound directly into my videos while I am shooting. I think I need an adapter to plug the mic into the flash shoe. Where I can purchase it online ?
Im facing problem while using zoom h1 as a audio interface ,when i trun off my computer and again turn it on the h1 too opens along with pc but i should have to set up again in h1..do you have any solution to setup a defult settings on h1 ...
What settings are changing or resetting on the H1? Are you leaving the Zoom plugged into the computer? You might try disconnecting it before you shut down your PC.
When your doing field recordings outside, its hard to set the input level for unpredictable sounds that may occur in the environment. The ambient sound may sit well between 12 and 6 db, but then there is a loud sound from a car or any number of things and it can distort. Does using auto level overcome this? Or any other tips ?
It's been 6 years so I assume you've figured this out but I'll leave this here for anyone else wondering the same thing. You would think that the auto-leveling function would be perfect and designed for this exact type of situation where you have fluctuating levels of sound being recorded and you want all of them to be captured in that good quality range. However the auto level function can be dangerous to use for this very reason... as the recorder cannot anticipate the loud car noise, when it happens the recorder will lower the input level to compensate for that loud noise but then when your subject starts talking the level will be too low for their voice resulting in bad audio, as it takes a second for the recorder to re-adjust. On the flip side if you have a speaker who pauses for a few seconds and the only sound the recorder is picking up is ambient room tone, the recorder will boost the levels to compensate for the lack of sound and then when they start speaking again the levels will be too high. All of this can result in a fluctuating audio level that is a nightmare to deal with in post. As a general rule I never use it if I can help it and would rather set the level to something that I think would be appropriate for the situation and hope for the best than rely on the auto level. The important thing to set the level for is the subject so if a loud noise happens in the background which doesn't interrupt of overlap the subject then you can simply cut that part out or crush the audio level for that portion in post, but the subject speaking for example will always be consistently at the correct level. If it does overlap someone speaking for instance then the best thing to do would be to ask them to do another take or simply state that one part over again.
I have just bought one to help with my iMovie videos for UA-cam so all guidance is appreciated thank you. I am particularly interested in getting improved audio in the Scottish mountains, on ships and around towns.
Who knew Ed Norton did Tutorial's haha.. In all seriousness thanks for the info I've just bought the Zoom H1 for low budget film making can't wait too use it!
Hi davidalwaysdream. Have you tried a new battery? Pressing the red record button should NOT turn off the recorder. If it's not the battery, I'd have to guess there is something wrong with your recorder. If you figure it out, let me know. Good luck.
The Zoom is a recorder, it's not designed to be used as an external microphone. You could, in theory run a cord from the Line Out/headphone jack of the recorder into the mic jack of a camera, I assume the Vixia has one? But the levels would be off, you'd need an adaptor. I think it is easier to record the audio separately. Use the Zoom to record the audio and then let the camera record the best audio it can. In post production you would synch the two together and then delete the audio from the camera. It's pretty simple to do in Adobe Premiere or by using a third party program like Plural Eyes.
Hi I want to record a audiobook with 5 people. We (5 persons) are all sitting in front of the one notebook and we are reading the text from the notebook display. Where and in which distance from the notebook and the speakers do you think is the optimal position for the H1 Zoom recorder? The problem is that the housing of the mic is not so stable and we can not give the microphone to the respective person who is talking. This would be the best.. So my idea was to do it behind to the notebook display in the center in a upright position. Would you recommend this or do you recommend a better position? Thank you in advance
Hi John Lauinger. The key to good audio is getting the mic close. The sweet spot for voices is generally 4-6 inches. Are you describing a situation where the Zoom would be fixed in place and people would 'step up the mic'?. That could work. You'd want a set up that let them be close to the mic, but you don't want the mic directly in front of their mouths unless you're using special gear. The hard sounds of the letter 'P' and some other letters create very loud explosions of air that sound like hard pops if you speak directly into the mic. So you generally want the mic either underneath or overhead - so it's close to the voice, but not directly in the path. If you look at photos of singers recording songs, you'll see they place a diffuser screen between their mouths and the mic to deal with plosives - those hard pops. hope that helps. good luck with the project.
I'm trying to record the loud noises coming from the apartment above me. I don't have a mic or anything hooked up to it. It's just the recorder. how come when i play back my audio from my zoom h1 within the h1 its only heard through one head phone ? The headphones that I have are fine when i move them to my phone. I moved the files to computer and it does the same thing
+isaacmijangos It could be for a couple of reasons. Have you tried other headphones with the Zoom? Do they work properly? Are the ones you are using iPhone earbuds? Are you saying the files off the Zoom are only in one channel on your computer too? Are you using an external microphone? if the microphone is a mono mic it would only record to one channel, so you'd only hear it in one ear.
+Penn State Commedia I did not try other headphones. They do work properly. They are the apple head phones. It is only one track on the computer and i have to switch it to mono during premier pro, and I am using a lavender mic.
I believe it's a standard mini USB connector. According to the Zoom website it's specifically a " Type: Mini-B type (USB 2.0 High Speed compatible)" www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h1-handy-recorder#specs
+Paul B I believe you need to purchase the micro SD card separately. The recorder has built in storage though. If you want to adjust the audio levels turn off Auto Level and use the up and down buttons to manually adjust your audio. Hope that helps.
+Paul B What lav did you get? Did you figure the problem out? A few guesses. 1. Does the lav need a battery? No power, no sound. Is it a lav for an iPhone? iPhone's use a different connector than other devices so it might not work in the Zoom. Any chance you plugged it into the headphone jack rather than the mic jack? Good luck.
Are you using an external microphone or the built in mics? Some external microphones only record to one channel - so that would be normal. If the built in mics are only recording to one channel, something may be wrong with the recorder.
If you're sure only one mic is picking up sound, then I think there is something wrong with the recorder. You might try turning off the recorder, popping the battery, and seeing if that resets anything. I don't believe there is any setting to turn off one channel. It's also possible it's your headphones or the headphone jack. You might try downloading the sound and playing it back through other speakers or headphones to try and isolate where the problem is. Beyond that you could contact Zoom and see if they have technical assistance or offer repairs. sorry I'm not more help.
That's odd. I'd try things like fresh batteries in the recorder, restarting both the recorder and computer, and trying a different USB cable. I'm not sure what else would cause that kind of problem. Good luck.
Hi Liam, never been compared to Edward Norton before,thanks...I think :). One of the specs of a microphone is its ability to deal with loud sounds. There is a point at which, if the sound is too loud, it will basically overpower the mic and you'll get distortion. The "Sound Pressure Level" measures the loudest sound a mic can handle. The H1 has a max of 120dB (By comparison, the Zoom H6 has a SPL of 136 which is significantly higher). If you're getting distortion with the H1, and you don't have access to a recorder with a higher SPLI would suggest singing softer if you can, or if you have to, move the mic further away from the source. Recording live music is an art and a skill. LOTS of info on the Internet. I found this link that had some useful info: www.sweetwater.com/insync/live-sound-microphone-buying-guide/
If you're using an external microphone, it may only be recording to one channel - that's a function of the mic. Make sure the mic is completely plugged in, that can also cause this problem. If you're using the built in microphones, you should be getting stereo audio on both tracks - it might be a problem with the recorder.
Otherwise occurs sound drifting when you try to synchronize with the video. It has to be the same as the camera natively records, or it will slightly desync as the time passes and you will have to make a lot of manual adjustments. If your camera records with a higher quality, you can use a higher quality with the Zoom H1, otherwise it will just be a pain. Normally every camera use 48kHz, I never saw one that doesn't, so this quality must be pretty good, or more than good enough.
Hi Juliet, I just looked at the specs on their website. They say only cards up to 32GB are supported. So that could be the problem. www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h1-handy-recorder#specs
The zoom says that the SD card is full yet when I plug it into the computer, the sd card is empty. I recorded a lot of audio on the SD card then transferred all files to my computer and deleted from the SD card. Is there a hidden trash folder on the SD card that I need to empty?
Format the card in the Zoom recorder, simply deleting them in the computer can cause complications. With the recorder off, press and hold the button with the trash icon. Slide on the power. The display should ask you to format (or erase) the card by pressing the record button. If you're sure you want to delete everything, press Record. Hope that helps!

Will Yurman I was trying to play the audio in audacity. Maybe I had some settings in audacity wrong but I didn’t change any of the settings in audacity and it played 44/16 just fine
I'm stumped. Sorry. If you try again and have the same trouble let me know some details about how you did it and what your settings were in Audacity and maybe we can figure it out. It should play.
You can certainly use the recorder while shooting video with any camera. You'll then need to synch them together in your video editing software. A third-party software called Pluraleyes can help synch audio.

Some microphones are mono mics so they will only record to one channel.
Hi, what settings do you recommend on the H1 to record voice on an exterior? Thank you
He said, the best volume with peaks reaching -12 and -6, so between -12 and -6
What settings would you recommend for singing loudly into the mic without sound distortion?
William Hunter check the audio level to make sure it’s not peaking. If it is then lower the input level to where it’s between -12 and -6 dB
When I sync the audio of the zoom with the audio with the camera in post production, there's a lot of delay on the audio of the zoom h1. Does anyone know why is that?

Unfortunately you can't set the levels separately. You'd need to upgrade to a more expensive recorder to gain that ability.

Just bought a Micro card, we'll see how that goes.....
just got hardwire lav, but when plugged in to Zoom, nothing (??)
Good luck.

My zoom is picking audio only from the left it was working fine but something went wrong suddenly.
Are you using an external microphone or the built in mics? Some external microphones only record to one channel - so that would be normal. If the built in mics are only recording to one channel, something may be wrong with the recorder.
Penn State Commedia I'm talking about the built in mics
If you're sure only one mic is picking up sound, then I think there is something wrong with the recorder. You might try turning off the recorder, popping the battery, and seeing if that resets anything. I don't believe there is any setting to turn off one channel. It's also possible it's your headphones or the headphone jack. You might try downloading the sound and playing it back through other speakers or headphones to try and isolate where the problem is.
Beyond that you could contact Zoom and see if they have technical assistance or offer repairs.
sorry I'm not more help.
When I increase the input level the right channel starts recording too,but the problem is that it's not on the same level!
is it mono?
It's a stereo recorder
@@YurmanVisuals okay cool Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄
suddenly my pc does not recognize the recorder.any suggestion about the reason? thank you
That's odd. I'd try things like fresh batteries in the recorder, restarting both the recorder and computer, and trying a different USB cable. I'm not sure what else would cause that kind of problem. Good luck.
Thanks
It is useful
incredibly useful video, god bless youtube
My Zoom H1 records using only the right channel. What's wrong with it?
If you're using an external microphone, it may only be recording to one channel - that's a function of the mic. Make sure the mic is completely plugged in, that can also cause this problem. If you're using the built in microphones, you should be getting stereo audio on both tracks - it might be a problem with the recorder.
thank you sir!
perfect, just what I needed
Your camera is amazing.
What camera is this?
Perfectly explained
Why not 96/24, that's the best quality.
the 44.1/ 16 bit is the standard cd quality audio, the better the quality the bigger the file size
In this video he says 48/16. What is 48? How is 48/16 different than 44/16. Thanks for your insight.
48khz / 16bits, that's the quality and resolution standards for TV production, radio uses 44.1 khz
he is explaining in the video.
I am trying to use a SDHC 64GB card and it is not working.. it says no card
Hi Juliet, I just looked at the specs on their website. They say only cards up to 32GB are supported. So that could be the problem. www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-h1-handy-recorder#specs
nice info for my zoom h1, more tutorial for h1 to connect 60d canon good quality sound.
please help me with my zoom h1 Zoom h1 problem (chipmunk sound)
Thanks this was helpful
1st rule of Zoom Recorder, we dont talk about Zoom Recorder
Pro tip: clean the product before you shoot the product.
Thanks!
Thank you sir.
Will Yurman I’d actually tried that last night and it worked. Thanks!
By the way you sound a lot like Edward Norton.
Anybody have a copy of the pdf "cheat sheet" mentioned in the video?
ah, dont worry, I just found it ;)
www.willyurman.com/teaching/handouts/Zoom_H1_Cheat_Sheet.pdf
You did a tutorial on a digital audio recorder and I don't think you actually recorded or played back one single word or sound. Waste of time.
can't record anything though without knowing how to use the recorder first. I think that this video was supposed to teach you that...
Why doesn’t the recordings play sound on my computer when I have it set to 48/16, but does play sound when I have the recording set to 44/16?
What application are you using? Are you on a Mac or PC? It should play using either setting.
Will Yurman asus. I forget what model number. It has 4 gb ram and 500gb hard drive
Do you know what application you were trying to play the audio in?
Will Yurman I was trying to play the audio in audacity. Maybe I had some settings in audacity wrong but I didn’t change any of the settings in audacity and it played 44/16 just fine
I'm stumped. Sorry. If you try again and have the same trouble let me know some details about how you did it and what your settings were in Audacity and maybe we can figure it out. It should play.
Can we use this mic while recording video with my mobile phone.
You can certainly use the recorder while shooting video with any camera. You'll then need to synch them together in your video editing software. A third-party software called Pluraleyes can help synch audio.
