Best Star Wars villain ever. I mean, Vader is a cultural icon, but Krennic was the first villain they've done who had relatable, understandable motivations. And though he didn't have that much screen time, every element of the character really worked to sketch him out. The ostentatious cape, the not-posh accent... he was very much a social climber; a sort of working class man trying to advance himself in an aristocratic officer corps.
My thoughts exactly, I couldn't put them any better. Krennic is a character for mature audience who no longer see the world in black and white and rather try to understand people, their views and motivations.
I find almost all of them relatable - Krennic wanted recognition for his achievements. - Vader was just miserable because he fucked up his own life beyond belief. - Dooku wanted to destroy the Sith from the inside. - Maul wanted to survive and was desperate for revenge against all his enemies.
I absolutely adore Director Krennic. He’s so relatable even as a “villain”. I rewatch Rogue One mainly for Krennic. He has such a presence in every scene he is in. From the beginning “Farming really, a man of your talents” he is one of the most fleshed out characters in Star Wars as we see a wide range of emotions from him. Fearing Vader, charming Galen, showing supreme confidence in his abilities to create the ultimate weapon. Brilliant!
The cape is stylish but also symbolizes his failings. Krennic, who simply is the supervisor of the Death Star development, wants to look more important than he really is via the cape, while Tarkin, who only wears a standard naval uniform, is truly the top dog.
A fitting tribute to a man who spent so much of his life building and designing the very weapon that'd kill him. Krennic wasn't a pure killer or Imperial fanatic, just someone who tried to climb the ladder of his superiors and make matters of the life he chose to seek. It's just a shame he could never quite reach it...
Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Director Orson Krennic The Intelligent? I thought not. It’s not a story The Rebellion would tell you. It’s an Empire legend. Orson Krennic was a Director so powerful and so Intelligent he could use is power to influence scientists to create a superweapon… He had such a knowledge of The scientists that he could even create a superweapon that destroys planets. The empire is a pathway to many abilities, some considered to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which, of course, he eventually did. Unfortunately, he taught his master everything he knew, then his master assumed his position, and killed him with the laser. Ironic. He could create a weapon, which eventually destroyed him.
'Oh its beautiful'. My reaction after watching this amazing piece of work. It's a great shame that Krennic was unable to have more time to be developed because this would be a fantastic piece to accompany a film centred on Krennic himself, particularly his past prior to Rogue One. Very well done.
@@cody92697 late, but tarkin isn't the same rank as krennic. tarkin was already a grand moff by the events of rogue one, while krennic was the director of imperial weapons development, a subagency of imperial intelligence (which in turn was a subagency of compnor). this is like being a presidential cabinet secretary vs being the director of a sub-division of the cia
His character was created and portrayed magnificently. It's the little things, too that matter. The small details that really give us a window into his mind. Krennic seems to treat those underlings who work for him with utter contempt. For example, when he is about to test fire the Death Star's weapon, one of the Imperial members tries to tell Krennic that they are ready to unleash the laser. Krennic rudely cuts him off and yells, "FIRE!" Initially, I thought it was due to Krennic being a jerk. However, later in the film we see that Krennic treats others poorly because he himself is treated so poorly by both Tarkin and Darth Vader. Krennic is clearly frustrated that his talent and achievements are being downplayed by Tarkin. It is like working for a back stabbing CEO who steals the best ideas from his underlings and takes credit for their work while making sure those underlings are never promoted within the company.
With the exception of Tarkin (Cushing is one hell of an actor), I'd say Krennick is comfortably the best imperial officer. I love how a high ranker is so ambitious and will actually get his hands proper dirty.
Words need not be said. We stand tall & straight, and nod our head silently. It's all he would have asked for. "Glorious are those that serve the Empire to the death, but immortal are those that serve the Empire beyond death"
Great tribute to a brilliant imperial officer and a brilliant performance by Ben Mendelsohn. You definitely captured his struggle throughout Rogue One to deliver the first Death Star.
If you're looking for more of Mendelsohn's appearances, Netflix has the TV show "Bloodline" on instant watch. He's great in this one although he was in only one season. He plays the "dark horse" of a family with many secrets and shows up one day ready to expose them all. It's an addictive show. Chloe Sevigny, John Leiguizamo and even Sissy Spacek show up in this too. Leiguizamo is hilarious as Mendelsohn's business partner. He, like several other characters, tries to get to the bottom of the mystery but keeps screwing up. Definitely worth watching.
A really underestimated character. For me, he was one of the greatest Commanders in Star wars universe, along with Grand Admiral Thrawn. Brave, fearless, disciplined, loyal to the cause that he was serving and with incredible commanding skills. His problem was that he was unlucky, and people with more power and connections, like Commander Tarkin, framed him.
It occurs to me that Krennic is the only main character on the imperial side who truly believes in the work of the empire. Palpatine is totally self centered, Vader / Anakin was a lost soul and never really cared about the Empire, he was just following Palpatine’s orders because he had nothing left to live for, Tarkin is an aristocrat who’s just as self centered as the emperor. Meanwhile Krennic’s over here trying to win the war by himself essentially.
Ben Mendelssohn was one of, if not the best actor in the Star Wars Franchise, without his portrayal of The Director, Rouge One would have been Meh. He is the movie.
Harrison Ford and Oscar Isaac I think are great too. But you're right, Ben Mendelsohn is a luxe for the franchise, and his character is the best from far of the Disney Era.
Best Star Wars villain, IMO. Slightly unhinged, deeply monstrous, and willing to do anything to obtain more power for himself. Mendelsohn's performance is absolutely perfect; wish we had more great actors like him in this franchise. Utterly fantastic editing; looking forward to seeing more!
The new Captain Marvel film cast said 'Ben Mendohlson' plays a prominent role. I had to see who this guy was. NOW I remember him. Now I really can't wait for the film!
Everyone loves Tarkin, but Krennic felt more real to me, not just a cartoony villain, but someone with an actual motive, goal & drive. Not to mention the fantastic acting
I had a strong feeling that Orson Krennic was only doing these things for the glory of the empire he serve and be part of. Except others like Darth Vader and Moff Tarkin were disrespecting him; knowing that failure is a shameful weakness, not as an example to learn from it to do better afterwards, or using our ambitious moves to help win a war they felt exhausted of. I feel such compassion for him because of knowing what it's like to be morally ambitious, patient, and in desperate shape to try our talents to set things right for ourselves and for everybody, too. I believe he and everybody else, including Grand Admiral Thrawn, are slaves to the empire. Therefore all what the empire is capable of is filled with corruption, lack of love or trust, inefficient to cooperate to one another as well as what the Rebels are usually good at. May he be at peace and those who loved him be also remembered.
this tribute was amazing thank you for an amazing tribute to an classic and great star wars character and by the way I thought Ben Mendelsohn's performance was Oscar worthy and he also occasionally looked like a younger Jeremy Irons too and I was just wondering in his final moments when Krennic looks up and sees that the death star is about to fire on him I thought I saw in his eyes some last minute remorse and guilt about all of the stuff he had done and Ben Mendelsohn was amazing in this film along with his chemistry with mads Mikkelsen the force is strong with you!!
I saw Rogue One and I must say that this is a dark movie but it does not have silly or embarrassing parts like the other Star Wars movies. This film is worth watching. I think Rogue One is special. If you can get it, then buy it on DVD or Blu Ray.
I'm finding him as one of the most interesting characters in Star Wars, not some cruel imperial officers but someone who had consumed a very particular purpose to undermine other ruthless officers like Governor Moff Tarkin.
Director Krennic is a very interesting villain. The novels Catalyst & Rogue One flesh out his character very well. Grand Moff Tarkin, on the other hand, is a great and interesting hero. Tarkin had the power & influence that Krennic so desperately craved.

Which is the best Star Wars film since Empire....

Yes. A brilliantly smart Director. If only he was not on scarif..
Agreed!!!!

The Burning Sensation good comment, although I find Dooku more relatable.

Director Krennic seemed to relish the dread and fear he instilled in Galen. They had a sort of “master/slave” relationship.
Really love this character, his cape, his manner and his determination. Would love to see more of him in action...

but mostly... his cape
The cape is stylish but also symbolizes his failings. Krennic, who simply is the supervisor of the Death Star development, wants to look more important than he really is via the cape, while Tarkin, who only wears a standard naval uniform, is truly the top dog.
Perhaps we will see something in the new Andor series. Fingers crossed!

He had nothing to do with the creation of the weapon.
I was just about to say how come no one's talking about how he died buy his own "work"

Try Catalyst novel, you'll like it. (Yeah, I'd love this one to be reacreated as movie)
He might make an appearance in the Cassian Live action series
I hope he appears in the Bad Batch
No one told me Director Krennic was so handsome. He had guts, too; not many men would get in Tarkin's face like that. Really great video!
They’re the same rank actually; though Tarkin’s role held greater responsibility thus leaving Krennic under him.

Late, but Tarkin saw him as a rival from since the earliest days of the Empire. Krennic's ambition for power doesn't do him favors either.
