- Full take of "Small Time Blues" for the Film "Almost Famous"
Performed by Songwriter Pete Droge and vocalist Elaine Summers.
Dir. C. Crowe meant this as a tribute to Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris.
Only 10 secs or so as made it in the film, in between scenes at the Hyatt (Riot) House Hotel.
Scheduled for demolition, the actual Continental Hyatt House in Hollywood was used by C.Crowe during filming, and was literally torn down only minutes after the shoot ended.
This hidden gem was tucked away on Disk 2 the Director's Edition DVD.

This movie by far has the greatest soundtrack of all times.
The film is filled with great songs, but it is kind of a cheat sound track because most if not all the songs were famous before the movie. Where as something like " The Graduate", all the music was original...and the music is better than the film. Or going a different direction, listen to the original Disney Jungle book sound track.

This harmony has stuck in my head since I first watched the tiny pan thru in the movie so many years ago.... There is a little part of my brain that feels SO complete now hearing the rest of it!

to me, this little scene spoke volumes. that people forget sometimes with all the excess, but when it comes down to it, it's all about the music ✌
This small scene was special and shouldve been in the movie longer to me it meant through all the bullshit of fame and fortune it's about making great music.........and not ego's

I always thought they were supposed to be Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris! Unfortunately Gram would die later in 1973 (same yearl Almost Famous takes place in). Thanks for sharing!
+Chad Thorson I saw this on Wikipedia In 2000, Droge appeared in the film, Almost Famous, as a "Hyatt Singer", performing "Small Time Blues" with Elaine Summers. According to director Cameron Crowe on the Director's Cut Commentary of the movie, the small part was a tribute to Gram Parsons andEmmylou Harris, whom he met in 1973.
If you just Google it, it is supposed to be Gram and Emmylou but they couldn't use one of his songs so had Droge write one that was in Grams style..Its sure not Sonny and Cher .
I know this comment was from a long time ago and maybe it's just my laptop and the color but doesn't this scene have a greenish hue to it like the cover of the LP GP? Is it just me that is seeing that?

Those harmonies combined with the oscillations left and right are perfect.
Not sure what it is about this version, by far the best. Something about the imagery of Pete and Elaine facing each other, such an intimate scene for an intimate song, couple that with the Gram Parsons angle, who died in a hotel room...

Almost like I can see Emmylou sitting in Elaines place pleading with Gram as he was dying (despite that event never actually taking place)...brings this song to a new level in my opinion.

A favorite scene in the movie, even before I realized who they were playing. And now, the whole song. Thanks! And this is a special version. The downbeat harmony, the slight phasing, just how they are sitting, so intimately!
And interesting - this was filmed with a 2nd camera set up just to record the song. And we see William enter the frame, pretty much at the same part of the song, when they did the chorus. So with the main camera, they shot him looking, and being pulled away, twice.

Kevin O I still can't believe Grams Daughter "Consulted " on it and helped promote it and attended the "Premiere " Now that's just wrong for a bunch of reasons. I've read in a few different places that Gram Adopted Her, Why? Why would you adopt your Biological Daughter?

I saw Pete Droge open for Tom Petty back in 1994 or 1995 in New Orleans and he stole the show!! Blew Tom Petty away and that's not an easy thing to do!

I wish this scene was longer in the movie. It was all of 10 seconds or something like that.
I completely understand. But the movie's focus was rock, not the emerging lotus of country-rock.
The scene has a green tint to it like the cover of the GP album.
As a fan of both Pete and Elaine and Gram and Emmylou, this is exponentially awesome. In a lot of ways Pete and Elaine are what Gram and Emmylou might have been, were they an actual couple. Maybe Gram wouldn't have died. Perhaps Emmylou wouldn't have reached mega stardom...but they probably would have made more fantastic music together like Luxury Liner (ua-cam.com/video/Jn77ZraSZ8A/v-deo.html). I know that link is Emmy after Gram's death, but it's his song and her voice. We could have had so much more. Oh well, sometimes rarity is a good thing. Great casting even Greater Tribute to Gram and Emmylou , Did this get Cut from the Film ? I just don't remember it and I would have known for sure who those two were supposed to be portraying .
