    When you work the Harvey Pusher, imagine the wings flexing and pulsing as you hand twist retrieve and pulse the rod tip on a three count. See the fly in your mind's eye and make it come alive in the dark. Then hold on tight.

    I was fortunate to watch George tie this Fly years ago, in fact I may have an old VHS of it! Dom, You tied this masterfully, and explained it so well! Enjoyed this!

    I have read George Harvey's book that details "The Pusher" fly. I also have the Jim Bashline's Night Fishing for Trout book mentioned in the article.
    I have been to the Limestoner Fly Fishing Museum at the Allenberry Lodge in Boiling Springs...later moved to Carlisle PA. I have seen and photographed up close one of George's hand tied Pusher flies.
    I am really glad to see this video and another I found, showing the tying process for this fly. Thanks for a tying recipe with more recent and readily available materials...I want to tie a few of these and then try them fishing Brown Trout at night.

    I tried this fly back in the 80s but always had a problem with it spinning. I will try it again now that I know to use heavy leader. Thanks.

    The pusher is always a fall back fly for me. If I’m night fishing I always keep a few tucked away in case. I have ran tandem pushers before and done very well to the point of almost have a double on.

    Awesome. Thanks tons for the history and the tutorial for this one. Looks like a must have pattern that needs to be fished hard! I'll definitely give these a go not only for night time browns but also for big smallies. $$$$.

    Someone get this man some water.
    Love the channel, love the podcast, love the blog. REALLY love this night series.. the hardest part of night fishing is finding people crazy enough to join me!

    With the Pusher Fly, it is key those front "wings" be swept back with a good curve in them...that pulsating of the wings as it moves through the water is the ticket. Is it true that the pattern it creates in the water, with its movement, simulates a mouse?

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  Рік тому

      I don't think so, honestly, no. I think it just pushes water, and that's it. Plenty of things at night or in the daylight can move water as they swim . .. or down: frogs, toads, baby birds, large moths, crayfish, dying or wounded smash fish of any sort, chipmunks (ha) and . . . Mice! So, yup, looks like a mouse.

    I appreciate you putting your knowledge online to help us become better night fisherman. Really enjoy your site and podcasts. I haven’t caught up on the podcasts, but can you fish this behind a mouse and if so, how much line do you tie on?

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  Рік тому +1

      Thank you. I wouldn't fish the Pusher with a mouse, no. They are two large flies that do two different things, so they would be fighting against each other instead of working together. Also, FWIW, I never trail anything from a mouse because it results in too many foul hooked fish. I do like to run a smaller second fly, but I keep that on a tag about two feet up from the larger point fly. Keep listening to the Night Fishing for Trout Skills Series on the Troutbitten Podcast. We cover this rigging in the last two episodes of that series, Ep5 and Ep6.
      Cheers.

    Serendipitous that you posted this today because just a half an hour before your upload I was looking up pusher recipes and ordering feathers/skins.
    Quick question... If I don't want to spend a bunch of money on all potential hook sizes immediately, what two sizes do you think would best cover my bases for a small and a large version? For background, my home river is a freestoner in Upstate NY but on the rich/abundant side when it comes to bugs/minnows/sculpins/crayfish/etc. Average trout size is probably a bit smaller than your spring creeks, but we still grow a decent number of prize fish in the 2 footer ballpark. Mix of stocked and wild fish depending on where I fish and seasonal migrations. Sort of a similar river to the Battenkill (which I also fish a lot).
    I was thinking maybe #4 and 1/0 would be best to start with?
    Thanks for everything and I can't wait to start tying and fishing these with my bootleg Pendragon-inspired streamers.

    How long of a leader do you use? Do you use a sinking line?

      Hi Jared. Be sure to check out the companion article on the Troutbitten website. It's linked in this video and in the description. Lots more there, but my short answer to your question is about 8 feet. Many more variables than I can take here though. Dig into the website and the Night Fishing for Trout Podcast Skills Series too. Cheers.

    Do you dye your pheasant tails black?

    • @Troutbitten
      @Troutbitten  Рік тому +1

      No. I just buy them that way. I like to find the ones with the darkish green/black shimmery tips. Can't really see that in this video. And it probably doesn't matter to the fish. But it looks good!
