On the older chevy V8 Engines we used to grab a set of valve covers from a junkyard and cut the middle lengthwise out. It would catch most the oil but still let you hear and see what was happening.

Had a customer recently had 08 5.4 rebuilt. After rebuilding the engine has no power and misfire. After checking the timing and replacing tensioners with Ford quality parts. Back together Rt head (pass) was getting the code for our of range timing . Showing retarded after 5 minutes warm up. The machine shop missed the heads. As the camshaft had to much clearance. R&R the head with a good rebuilt head. All is well.

If you look at time 54:02 on the bank 2 cam phaser, it looks very much like the cam phaser finger is not lined up with the "R" mark. This would definitely cause the P0345 as that is set when starting. The computer looks to see where the cam phaser is on start which it should have been in a default locked position. The cam phaser on bank 2 is definitely broken.
That said, finding paper in bank 2 makes me think paper could be everywhere. Absolutely caused low oil pressure in certain situations as oil goes from bank 2 to bank 1. The pan needs to be pulled and cleaned at a minimum. The fact that the valve cover bolts were painted in place with the rubber grommets and tightened to oblivion is an extremely poor rebuild. I am so very disappointed in this Fraser rebuild.
I would love for @FordTechMakuloco to watch this and make his opinion. Also, this Fraser needs to step up on this repair. 540k subscribers plus many more are directed to watch this video.

No matter how your "opinion" of someone else's work may be subjective, they cannot argue with the broken stuff and paper left in the engine. Ray, seeing you have to go through all you did and keep your wits and patience about you while doing it, reminds me of why I don't care to pop the hood on modern engine compartments today. I loved turning wrenches on the 60's and most 70's engines. The way these car engines and built and are installed today presents a real nightmare for me. I just don't have the patience for it after years of working on even big block motors under hoods with plenty of workspace and easy access to most engine components that were simple and easy to understand and evaluate. My hats off to you!!!!👏👏👏

This tomfoolery is standard procedure for shady companies of all kinds. They put up so many hoops to jump through that they expect nobody to actually jump through them and thus can deny all warranty claims. But here you are jumping through those hoops to prove a point.

I know you said there was satisfactory oil pressure, however the plastic wrapper debris might have moved giving you good pressure now, it might not always be good. no matter what happens, if it is a phasor issue or not, the sump has to come off to look in the sump and at the oil pickup tube. Plus the fact that I would expect a total replacement because I don't expect an engine I paid for to have any foreign bodies in it.

I've rebuilt 4 engines in my life..they are all still working some 15 years now.
I cannot believe you found some paper in the upper engine!
When I saw that in there.. i actually was taken aback in my chair.....my jaw dropped,
my eyes widened, and i thought: "What the hell"!!.
That alone should have been warrant enough to warrant the engine with NO questions asked.. and then I was shocked that you said you wanted to repair that engine.
What I would have done with that thought, i would pull that engine out of the vehicle, put it on an engine stand and strip it to the bones and check out for any other "things" that may have been installed wrong.
Then I would have tenderly put it back together .
    You sir, are a SAINT!!!
In other words , i would have not taken the finding of strange things inside the engine..that
paper looks like it may have been on the cam lobe at one point in time. Just guessing.
Well, I'm old , what the hell do i know.....that is what young kids today think of anyone who
has the amount of experiance that they have....but MONEY seems to be at play here.
I recently put on over $700.00 of new cooper tires on our suv...i wanted snow tires, but ended up having m+s tires. (mud and snow), when they were finished they had put on a TOTALLY DIFFERENT type of tires on...RAIN tires...omg it's winter..why would i want rain tires....they even tried to convince me to keep on my vehicle what they had mistakenly put on. I heard them (WALMART) for almost 10 minutes that they were not going to put on what i wanted, but that i needed the ones on my suv.
I guess because im old.....i was available to have whatever they wanted for me on my vehicle....or that I was just stupid or something lol.
I finally got what i wanted..the cashier/writer of our appointment made the mistake of
    having the wrong tires.
Things happen....not her fault totally....well, yes it was lol.
but hey Ray, in the end...you can believe us or you can leave us right?!!

@Fordtechmakeyouloco has built a career off the 3v. He knows this engine better than anyone else I’ve ever seen. Operating it with this issue for long enough will cause damage to the cam chain guides and it progressively gets worse.

Replacing the bolt resolved the issue....they are one time use anyway so once he removed it to check it a new bolt was needed anyway.

My own observation is there seems to be TWO distinct groups of people: (-1-) get er done and (-2-) enjoy the journey.
Mom would hustle thru housework to sit down and read a book. She just wanted it done , i.e. get er done.
Dad had a avocation to refinish furniture. He simply delighted at removing old finish to then carefully sand in graduated number sandpaper to perfection... then apply finish also to perfection. To him the journey was a simple delight.
Life is a mix of both. However, if one can settle on a profession where one deeply enjoys the process along with a finished project/product then they will have better patience and payoffs... just sayin'

I agree with several other commenters here. It's pretty obvious that the engine builder is trying to dodge a warranty claim by demanding needless, time consuming, "diagnostic" work that they hope will either be physically impossible to do with the engine still in the truck, or will be disapproved by the customer, so that the claim will just go away. Kudos to both you and your customer for holding the builder to account for their work. Why was there foreign material found trapped under the driver's side valve cover, next to the cam phaser? Why were all the valve cover bolts over torqued? Why was the old sludge never cleaned out from the undersides of the valve covers, before they were reinstalled? That engine builder has a lot to answer for.

Love you videos, I would feel better knowing you video your work ,so they can't say you broke this or that, I also like how you just laugh off the stuff that would send most guys through the roof 😅😅keep it up.

If that’s a ‘premium’ install I would hate to see the ‘basic’ option!

That was an awesome video Ray. Now you will have to spray her down and get the oil off everything before the dust attaches to it. Hope you get paid well for your warranty evaluation. Just another day in paradise!

What a mess Ray. We definitely need a follow up video on what will happen next. Me thinks a Coyote swap would be the real answer, lol. New valve cover, cam phaser, in the least for this engine. The customer should have had you to replace the engine in the first place. Now it will cost them dearly. Great video Ray
