I honestly really like that they give such detailed changelogs, so many companies just go "fixed various bugs" for every single update. As a technical person it's really fascinating what goes on behind the scenes, and what can go wrong.
So many companies release devices with quality software, rather than selling a full-priced product that's not even a beta, but a buggy alpha that you end up testing for a whole year, and hallelujah - you finally get a more or less stable device.
im not sure why im watching this, i dont even have an edge.
Same.lol
Because the guy has a nice voice 🤣🤣
Sames 😂
😂
Same😂
Route sharing would be great for me, but I haven't any friends. :P
NP, lets be friends :)
wind field - wow - never knew that was a thing. How good!
I checked my 1040 and it wasn't playing ball a couple of times when asked to check for an update. So if you're trying to do it, keep on trying. After the third attempt it did connect, and downloaded this update. Then select it to install. Thanks Shane for sticking this vid up. I read it on Google. 👍
Shane! Am tardy saying thanks for the superb tip on WindField. Have been enjoying it for a time now. All the best to you and your family (Hi Von 🙂).
Same here. I loaded it after seeing Llama Lab review. I won’t ride without it.
Still no audio control via d-Fly. Skip song from the handlebars will be so great. I wait, I hope, I dream.
Don’t know what it is but I love your edge firmware update vids. Concise and informative especially with the mini tutorials you build in like the SRAM control in this one. Chapeau!
Cheers! I love seeing new features/functionality released for things we already own... and in most cases that enhance the experience while using them. Having to decode exactly what a lot of the line items are is like a regular treasure hunt. 🏴☠️🤣
21.16 has mucked up daily workout suggestions, at least in this part of the world 🇦🇺.
Sometimes it would show them and sometimes not. I think it is not showing them till 0:00 UTC, ie 10am here.
The Apple map pin sharing would be handy for bike packing for making detours. I have a quad lock mount on my bike for this purpose.
Thanks Lama. I like the idea of the Apple Maps send location. In my experience I’ve found that searching on edge to be pretty bad
The apple map thing seems like an obvious idea that should have been there a long time ago.
I wish they will do it for google map as well.
Google Maps would be awesome 👍
how they pick apple maps and then not do anything for google maps is unbelievably perplexing.
I also think it is about time to have this. That was one of the reasons I used to love the wahoo, they also used the phone to set destinations though only through their own app. Using the screen and the search on your phone screen is much more comfortable to use and integrates better with email, messaging apps etc. I disagree with @GPLama , this is a great feature
There is an IQ app called maps share that works with Google maps but it should really be native
There is an IQ app to share from Google maps
Amazing it took this long to add “lap ascent”. This has always been on the fenix watches and was always confusing why they didn’t have this on a cycling computer??? Glad it got added, thanks for update!
I have a 1040 solar. This new update is fantastic for me, since I ride 99% indoor, and the last time I rode on tarmac was 2 months ago.
The Apple maps thing is super interesting. I'm really hoping a Google Maps version is on the horizon, and that this will come to my Forerunner 955. Ad hoc navigation (especially in the city) is one of the big things that I miss having from a more traditional smartwatch.
Group ride / route sharing would be interesting to see in a future video.
Saved my day for my Edge 540 which doesn't have a built-in on-device navigation, now with the help of iPhone ,I can on-device to navigate to any location I want
I would really like it if there was a way to display the navigation line and especially my navigation arrow larger. Just like it is with Wahoo or Karoo. Is there a possibility or will Garmin offer this again?
Throw a few change logs on the fire and settle in 😊
🤣🤣
I got some intermittent updates pushed before this one and it appears that this one finally fixes most of the things the previous updates broke (at least for me). Still having connection issues with a BLE speed sensor though (ironically, it's Garmin's own sensor).
Now that guide for aux buttons for Garmin would be great :)
I found one more thing. Now climb category in climb setting (filter, what climbs need to be detected) became colorful and more understandable.
Shifters buttons interacting with head units is such a cool feature.
Are they still updating the firmware on the 530? It's what I have and I don't feel the need to upgrade just yet.
Yeah, that's how I felt till I broke my 530 the other day. Still a solid unit, don't upgrade just yet. Even if it doesn't get any more updates it will do everything you need it to do.
I use the polar verity sense! It's not junk man! I love it. It's very comfortable to wear and doesn't require any gel or sweat to start working (optical sensor). I have compared it to the garmin dual HRM strap and it seems very accurate as well. I don't really like the feeling of a strap around my chest and so this is a great alternative. I wear it on my upper arm with the sensor towards the inside (medial aspect) of my arm and I put it under the sleeve of my jersey. I often forget I am even wearing it until I start undressing to take a shower after my ride and I realize it's there.
I didn't mean to call it junk... much. It's what I refer to almost everything! :) I typically switch to arm HR in summer.
@gplama why arm vs chest in summer?
Currently updating my 840
Please do a video on how to use group ride feature.
Version stable v21.16 did not repair reported in the problem, consisting of changing the language of the Polish on English.
Ba, this bug projects to other devices paired with GarminConnect (smartwatch) which during lap tops also starts “talking” in English instead of Polish which is correctly set.
I just want an easy to use, touchscreen & physical button, reliable gps with amazing mapping/routing. I live in hope!
The 2M PHY update is Garmins resolution for frequent bluetooth drops on the 4iiii dual sided PMs. I have an open ticket about it. Since using the update I no longer have frequent dropouts.
Interesting! It'd be great if they would include specific products these things are meant to be fixing. Even if only for the beta group. It's something I could be testing here on my rides.
When's the igp800 bike computer full review coming. As it was said to be in a month's time.
Many thanks
Great walkthrough as always. Unfortunately this update made my Stages power meter useless as the ANT+ drops out every few minutes :'( Took a few rides before I realized why my power had dropped so suddenly.
Hey Shane! You know how Garmin has the "Chainring shift next" text pop-up and tone when Di2 is paired and in full synchronized shifting mode? Do you know if that happens when paired with a SRAM AXS groupset configured in their equivalent sequential shift mode?
Interesting video as always. I would like to know how to activate the "ascent and descent data fields" as seen in the video. I can't find the item in the menus. I updated my 1040 (no solar) to firmware 21.17. Thank you.
You should make a separate video with the Garmin / SRAM Red bonus button setup. There is very little content out there for this. Or maybe update to include such descriptor in your vid title.
Group ride and live track video please
I hope I don't regret having bought the 540 with only 16gig memory after this update cause it was already complaining not having enough room since the last map update.
And since I use the 540 I have some kind of varia 0.9 error coming on the screen from time to time
My Assioma's now drop out every few mins on the 840S. Never happened before this update. I changed them to Ant+, but haven't tested that yet.
iirc Garmin recommends peripherals use ANT+ (confirmed with a quick Google). Keep me posted on how things perform when switching to ANT+.
@@gplama Ant+ fixed it. No Assioma drop outs today. 👍
GoPro control would be very handy for riding on the MTB... I thinking about getting the actual remote, but it's a bit pricey.
No mention of the bug where my 840 just wakes up from standby, and if I have auto sleep off, just drains the battery. I have auto-sleep off because I find it doesn't reconnect sensors reliably if it goes to standby. Unfortunately, auto-sleep is not configurable as one might expect , to say 15 mins.
I can confirm the official remote is pretty neat! Super handy with the 11 Mini that I can't see the recording LED flashing when it's on the bike.
You can just point out like avg Garmin software rating changed 1.3 => 1.4 out of 5, that’s enough :)
I have edge explore 2 and i received that update too.
Yep. It was released a few days after the x40 series release (and this video).
@@gplama yep, and now my sensors constantly dropout or do not connect with 21.16 on EE2. lots of complaints online about it. Start the unit, start the ride, nothing connects - manually try to connect - nothing. Stop the ride, turn unit on/off, start again, everything connects. Garmin can't get it right - constant software headaches for basic stuff. There is no QC. When is Roam v3 coming? Pray tell.
Morning GP! When you were showing your map screen you had a cool data setup under the wind box showing all your stats etc. how did you do that?! It’s almost like a data banner smaller than the normal data window. I appreciate your help and great channel btw!
Maybe MapDashboard: ua-cam.com/video/HCb7OFJqUj8/v-deo.html
@@gplama thank you! Perfect.
How do you get to the page that shows the AXS Micro Adjustment on the Edge unit at 2:40? I'm using AXS GX/ X01 Eagle on MTB. Thanks
Is it possible to configure ant+ on Rival Axs (both buttons click)? Where can I find a standard wind data field (not ciq)?
Thanks for the info. Do you know why Garmin didn't bring the sleep screen feature from the 830 to the 840? It was my favorite feature.
I assume they trust the battery life on the x40 enough not to have to shut the screen off entirely like they do on the x30.
@@gplama I guess but I liked that the screen wasn't distracting. That's why I like it to sleep.
Many issues with power meters connection dropping since this firmware update :-(
Group ride is an awesome feature, but I find it hard to convince other cyclists to use it. Everybody just uses komoot or strava to get their routes loaded prior to riding.
Next month huh… I’m looking forward to the rumored bigger, touch screen wahoo. Couldn’t be that, could it?
You can also:
- see micro adjust on the garmin screen
- see live segments during navigation
yo no puedo ver Live Segments de Strava mientras estoy navegando un track, debería permitirlo
Did you update to the new firmware?
how to change line navigation color on garmin 540?
Group Ride Video please!
Para cuando corregirán que aparezca el tiempo de un segmento de strava que se realiza ese día directamente en el dipositivo garmin para no tener que esperar a finalizar la ruta y ver los tiempos de ese día. El 830 si lo hace
"Fixed audio prompts for speed" ... yay! Having this read out pace was so frustrating!
Yes, but now it just reads pace in Spanish. (kidding... I hope! 🤣)
@@gplama It would be very good if the audio prompts were in Spanish, unfortunately they are now in English instead of Spanish.
Also a new update for the Edge Explore 2 just dropped, but it's version 20 rather than 21. Still, given that the Explore 2 is a cousin to the x40 series I'd assume that quite a few of these fixes apply to it as well.
Looks like it has 21.16 and all the same updates: forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-explore-2/373500/new-edge-explore-2-version-21-16-now-available---phased-rollout-50
Wait so if I buy blips for my old red AXS I can now control Garmin pages?
@gplama any update about the full review of igpsport800 ?
So on my device after updating to this version I still have battery issues. Today it went from around 90% to 50% in 2 hours...
Also I don't really have issues with it draining in sleep, even though that has happened at least once before. My issue is that the battery often drains way too fast when I am riding. It's easily noticeable given that when it's not being drained it lasts around 5 to 10 times longer.
I’m on holiday so sadly won’t be using my 1040 for a bit. I will tell you this though! I won’t be selling it to buy the Karoo 3. Garmin for life.
I see the map is still ridiculous and hard to understand so glad I sold my 1040. Did they ever fix the sensor drop out mine did it every time I stopped and went into standby
I can’t find a way to access trimming. Neither on AXS nor on DI2
They should also update their font size in time fields. The font size indicating the number of hours ridden, is way too small compared to minutes and seconds.
@GPLama - were you able to set up your wireless blips for both short and long press? I came across people on Garmin forum reporting they were able to get the short press ant+ only, but not the long one. Is that a limitation of wireless blips over ant+? Would be great if you can test on yours.
I believe the Blips only do short presses. It's how they conserve their non-replaceable batteries. The AXS app only lists 'short press' as an option when configuring them in ANT+ Shift Function mode. Garmin Edge devices still list Long Press, in error I assume.
@@gplama That makes sense (unfortunately), but it's a bit pity for Rival AXS owners - no wired port and a prospect of $100 out of pocket to merely scroll the screen back and forth is a luxury. If there was only a way to have one blip set up as Pause/Resume workout (for controlling recovery time between hill repeats, not stoping the timer) and then the other as screen scroll fwd. Alas being on Edge 840 I don't see that be a valid scenario. Cheers mate!👍
This is the most Shugary update I received so far, my Garmin 1040 is freezing every time I switch on or off the unit and sometimes during the run...
My 840 disconnects ANT+ devices after starting a ride on 21.16. I select a course, set out, a minute later, no devices are connected (HR + PM). They don't show up connected in sensors. Restart is the only fix...I only recently got it and read on forums it seems to be an issue for a longer time?
Sounds familiar here, too. Loaded a route/course over the weekend and no power was being displayed. Stopped the device, and restarted (without the route/course) and everything worked as expected. This happened on both my and my wife's bike - for both Quarq (crank) and Favero (pedals) power meters.
Been happening to me ever since I got the 840 (as soon as it was released). Annoying af
Mine started doing the same right after the update!! Favero dropping out while still showing connected…. Smh
Same! How do we get power back on Garmin?!
Does the WindField work with your 1040Solar? With mine it shuts down occasionally all sensors until I make a hard restart of my Edge. And it's frustrating, when you ride a training and suddenly all your sensors are lost until the device is physically restarted
Will sram function Set be available at 830 too?
So I guess that the edge 530, 830,and 1030 can just the thrown in the bin as we won't be getting much updates or changes? Funny enough, just had to warranty my 530 as it was read elevation incorrectly!
They had a good life. They’re still more than capable of all the features released on them.
@@gplamaThey still have a bug where sensors randomly disconnect though. The last beta firmware before the x40 series’ release (9.79) was supposed to solve the issue, but no stable version ever turned up unfortunately. I would be very happy if I got no more features added to my 530 as long as that bug was fixed.
@@headlessmike is that a bug? I often have varia disconnect or HR and even had the unit shut down and reboot a few times randomly. Thought was my faulty device.
@@gplama more than capable? I'd argue there's 0 reason to upgrade to anything newer.
@@BikesKomsCRO Can't say for certain about your device, but in Garmin's community forums there have been numerous reports on sensors disconnecting at random since about firmware 7.xx. For me the problems got really bad with version 9.75, to the point where I'm certain to lose connection with one or more sensors during a longer ride (two or more hours).
Can I use a Blips with my new Sram Force AXS in my Garmin Edge Explore 2 to change between diferent displays?
Yes. I've noted to do a Instagram reel or similar showing this soon.
@@gplama Great!
Looks like they are fixing lot of bugs before the imminent release of the Edge 1050 ;)
And we're still waiting for daily workout suggestions based on HR...
When the norm in the tech world (Garmin included) is to release a product in a beta version and rely on bug reports by the costumers to release a fix, sometimes years later, I think it is only fair that they offer some new functionalities with that, to somehow compensate. Would you agree?
Hmm... not really. But I see your angle for sure. (It'd also take me a while to type out my thoughts on this. A good one for a podcast!)
@@gplama fair enough. I have been a “fan” and client of Garmin for more than a decade, and still am. But…
- my fênix 5 watch has sync issues via WiFi and BT, even after multiple factory resets / firmware updates.
- One fenix 3 (waterproof up to 100m) died of water damage in 1,5 years because the bezels screws came loose with time and the o-ring lost it function. - My Edge 530 loses connection to all peripherals mid-ride (Varia, power meter, speed sensor, HR strap) and then reconnects again. This one reported for years in their forum by multiple users, still no fix. AFAIK reported as well in some x40 series.
- My Garmin HR pod died recently as well, due to water damage, although only being used for cycling.
- My Varia RCT715 video transfer via app is a dumpster fire (as described by DCRainmaker). This one is on me, I knew what I was getting into, but was hoping for a fix in the near future.
- Just some of the frustrations I can remember right know, as a costumer who already spent thousands in Garmin products.
My total calorie count in Garmin Connect does not include my recorded activities
Shane, are Garmin still updating the x30 series? I don't remember seeing one for a while now. I don't see any great leap in functionality to make go to a x40 series.
No. There’s a minor bug fix coming soon for the x30 (currently in beta). That’s all I’ve seen in a long while.
Hi there, excellent information but you missed the part where this update brakes 3rd. party maps on the unit. You couldn't let Garmin know they have done this could you??
Given the EDGE x40 series has global maps available for free to swap in/out via Garmin Express, there's little need to install third party maps for most users.
@@gplama The maps I use are far better than the ones provided by Garmin with more detail. They are from Talky Toaster.
Every time I sync my Edge 1040 with Garmin Express I lose my local pre installed maps. I have to close Garmin Express and shut down my PC start it up again and then reconnect my Edge to Garmin Express and select the maps for my area and redownload them. It’s a headache. I’m not going to bother with any more updates involving Garmin Express because this is the second time it’s happened.
A bin folder would be awesome, doesn't happen always but I deleted a file by accident and now it's lost forever.
Any news on new Epix gen 3?🙏🏻
I'm not across the wearables side of things.
Hey Shane, thanks for the informative videos.
Have you or anyone else noticed the Edge 840 overestimates the distance (and speed) by up to 10%? I have been using the 840 for about 9 months and have noticed that the distances reported by the 840 are always greater than all my previous devices & methods or recording distances (e.g. Garmin 520, Garmin speed sensors, Strava apps, Topeak Panoram V12, etc). All other devices report distances within ~100m of each other for a 20-30km ride but the Garmin 840 reports around 2-3 km longer. On a recent group ride all other riders reported distances in the range 58.8 and 59.4 km. My Garmin 840 reported 63.2 km.
Last week I borrowed a brand new Garmin 840 (from my bike shop) and it too overstated the distances. I wonder if you or anybody else has noticed this or has conducted a detailed assessment of the accuracy. All software on my devices are up to date. I have played around with the different satellite settings with mixed and inconsistent results. Garmin states "With a strong satellite signal, the GPS position reported by an outdoor watch should be accurate to 3 meters or 10 feet." This is not my experience.
What's the experience of the cycling community? Perhaps a topic for a video?
cheers
Not something I’ve experienced. What country are you in?
@@gplama Gippsland, Victoria
Hmm! Very interesting. I'd ping Garmin support on this one. It's not something I see on any of their units just up the road in Ballarat.
@@gplamayes. Garmin support don’t have any answers either.
So when are they going to resolve the latency issue with inclinación?
Given the amount of time this has been an issue, I suspect it's all hardware related. The last I recall is it's claimed to be a 'rolling 10 or 15 second' gradient reading or something.
I own an Edge 840, firmware update, since then the Garmin beeps in every 10s. I checked the sensors, the front and rear cog menu are flashing, I choose the right cogs, and after this the menus are still flashing, the Garmin still beeps in every 10 second. Has anybody the same problem?
How did you do screen recordings? I know in Karoo its possible to sideload app for screen record, but how to do it with Garmin?
Covered in a video how-to here: ua-cam.com/video/0DM_aF8oLd4/v-deo.html
@@gplama It's not work with 840 @21.17 beta.
i have a edge explore but i dont find the update
:-(
Do the X30 series still get updates, or are they EOL?
Feature wise, pretty much EOL. There's a beta update (xx.81) sitting in the beta pool at the moment for x30 series units that lists "Fixed several stability and functionality issues.". I'd expect that to roll out any any point.
Magene C606 review anywhere on the horizon?
I'm waiting on an update from Magene on that. As it stands it really isn't in the same 'feature' league as the x40 range if that's what you're looking for. Given the form factor of the C606 there was a lot of expectation it'd be similar.
@@gplama yeah, I understand, at this point in time I mostly just want to know if the basics are solid, like training features, routes, navigation. And also the main reason I haven't gone for it is worry over the very small storage space.
Anyone how problem with seeing no power after this update??
I have rival+eagle axs mullet setup and I don’t see ant+ controls functionality in the axs app. Everything is updated. Have I missed something? Thanks!
One for SRAM support if you can’t switch the controls to ANT+ Shift function within the AXS app.
Need to remap LAP button on explore 2 to something useful ;)
Hello. After installing the latest update on my Edge 540 device, there are connection problems and disconnections between the device and the Force Axs power meter. What should I do? Can I roll back the last update...
Call Garmin support.
The x30 devices don't get updated anymore?
There is a bug fix beta out for the x30. Waiting for that to hit the public release before digging into it. Feature wise they’re effectively sunset now.
@@gplama if I remember correctly that is / was different for the Wahoo units. How's do other brands handle updates after a new unit is released?
When I need to update my Garmin unit, this is an "against" point for Garmin.
@@krisvanderven2367 This is par for the course. Wahoo are now releasing a lot of features only for their latest GPS units. These companies need to keep selling hardware.
1040 non solar here. My touchscreen has completely stopped working after an update. Tried holding power to reboot it, and also a factory reset by holding all buttons while off. Im now stuck on a select language screen. Any suggestions?
Best contact Garmin on that one.
Shane and your audience! Why is it not possible to add a via point, a detour to an existing A to B route on device? I know you can add several points but why is it so complated for Garmin to be able to add a 3rd point by pinning on the map and that becoming a detour? I just don't get it.
That's not a detour, that's just bad planning! 🤣 Good question though.
@@gplama Haha. I often just freeride. I hardly follow pre-planned courses. A mobile does a perfect job but I so badly want an Edge.
Now they just need Google Maps location drop and I'll be happy.
Is the location sharing just for Apple or can Android do it too?
Apparently there is a 1050 coming out? Do you have an early release?
If I'm lucky enough to be part of any new Garmin product release, you'll see a review on here as soon as any embargo lifts.
do you think there will be a 1050 this year?
That's the word people are floating around on the Interwebs. I'd have a lot of questions if there is to be a x50 range released this year. If that means an effective sunsetting of the x40, that'll ruffle a few feathers. Even with the new Karoo dropping last week, the x40 series is still ahead on features.
I think there's a lot of low hanging fruit for Gamin to pick in 2024 that would be easy wins. An updated Edge 130 (140!), an RTL515 with USB-C and a slightly bigger battery (maybe they can switch to 77GHz and make it reliable?), just to name two things.
Still no Strava live segments while navigating :(
Strava segments while routing? Are you KOMming or going? 🤷🏻♂️🤣
también estoy interesado en que se habilite Live Segments de Strava mientras navegas un track. para cuando?
Is this update also on the edge explore 2?
Yes. It was released a few days after publishing this video.
I have a 1030 plus…more than a year without firmware updates…🤷♂️
Rumours of a 1050 with AMOLED. Can you neither confirm nor deny? 😀
I don’t do leaks. I get in enough trouble as it is. The last thing I need is Garmin sending me legal letters. (Also related - Peloton and Hummel can EAD).
The rumor was speculation from a "news" site
Some more news about that released yesterday.

I'm not sure now with the blow-out in map sizes with ClimbPro free-ride.
@@gplama yeah not too sure. Thank you for replying though, appreciate all you do.
