Pen I think not having an open discussion/debate around capitalism with David is a missed opportunity here. One of advantages of podcasts is that you can allow the conversation to progress naturally. Trying restrict/postpone that conversation broke the natural flow of the dialogue and gave this episode a contrived feel to it. Don't be scared on engage on the hard questions with your guest.

    • @Penuelism
      @Penuelism 9 місяців тому +28

I have a way of dealing with guests in a sustainable manner... I was meeting David for the first time & didn't want to be hostile.
I also am always wary of the audience & future potential guests who will be put off from visiting if I'm too confrontational to other guests.
David had a good time, he got to school me & us, we met up... and now I have licence to grill him when he visits again, knowing that I'm not a hostile host.
We have to do things strategically, especially when it comes to human beings. I think it's one of the things that works for me.
I may get criticized, but I'm fine with that. I get to build sustainable & genuine relationships, and not just debate for reactions & views.
      I hope that makes sense.

@godpenuel , I completely understand and it makes perfect sense.
I want to clarify that, despite my earlier comment, I genuinely enjoyed the conversation. It was very insightful. It's just that I believe the topic of capitalism, especially in the political and economic contexts of South Africa, is fascinating. It would have greatly benefited the audience to hear both your perspective and David's.

If the west believes so much in capitalism and fair competition of ideas and letting the market decide, then it stands to reason that allowing Venezuela to freely trade in their oil within international trading rules of course should pose no challenge and there should be no artificial stumbling blocks placed of Venezuela's path because the west clearly has a superior system.

Thank you Penuel for this conversation.
On Jan Smuts: It is intriguing that you mentioned his name and acknowledged his complexity and significance in South African history. Indeed, Jan Smuts remains a figure of considerable nuance, evoking both admiration and criticism. In my own collection, I possess some of Smuts' speeches and correspondence from the pre-1910 British-Dutch union era, offering a glimpse into his multifaceted persona. There exists a certain parallelism between Smuts and Thabo Mbeki, as noted by Richard Steyn in his biography of Jan Smuts, which might intrigue your audience, Penuel.
Penuel astutely highlights Smuts' ambivalence and the challenges he (Jan) faced within the Afrikaner community, particularly regarding his alignment with the British colonial worldview. Smuts' views on race, particularly his perspective on the "Native," are indeed troubling, reflecting the prevalent racial attitudes of his era. His vision of a unified South Africa under white leadership, while ambitious, was inherently flawed and destined for failure, given the deeply entrenched divisions within the country.
The rift within the Afrikaner community, symbolized by the breakaway factions opposed to British dominance in the 1910 union, played a significant role in shaping subsequent activism, including the emergence of the Institute for Race Relations in South Africa. While its roots trace back to 1929, the institute's research became particularly pertinent following the ascent of the National Party to power in 1948. Prior to this, it operated as a liberal advocacy group, amplifying the voices of educated Black elites and public intellectuals who advocated for the interests of the majority.
However, it is crucial to acknowledge the evolution of the Institute for Race Relations over time. While it may have begun as a beacon of truth and advocacy, its current incarnation reflects a departure from its original mission. Today, the institute appears to have transformed into a political instrument wielded by the opposition party, exerting influence in the South African political landscape. This shift underscores the complex interplay between research institutions and partisan politics in shaping public discourse and policy agendas.
I will not get to the discussion about capitalism. Suffice to say; the guest was engaging with another capitalist thinking brother. The assumptions that are uttered are not worth one's attention at the moment.
Thanks for the great conversation gentlemen.

A better example of the pie analogy: People have this assumption that there is one pie, and all we have to decide is how to divide the slices of the pie. But under a free market economy, you open a bakery, and bake as many pies as you want to.

A talented guy in the EC may not make it in Rugby, cause on a basic level he does not have the same resources as our white counterparts e.g Grass at school or rugby boots. Siya had to worry about what he is going to eat, how do we expect him to perform at his highest potential if he is hungry. We expect him to perform on merit mara how does he compete if he is at a disadvantaged just on nutrition. If we are to be judged on merit then give us a level playing field. So my plan to save humanity is to build a mini planetoid type of a space ship to send a few men and women and thousands of human embroys two some solar system somewhere, of course these people in this spacee ship will have to make babies throughout the thousands of years of travel in empty interstellar space, and thrhoughout the journey, the children wil be left on different habitable planets to further the survival of our species. Maybe I am crazy, maybe I am trying to impress you, or I am bored because I am unemployed, or I am all of the above. But it is my plan to build an interatellar type of transport. Thanks for an interesting conversation again Penuel. David Ansara is an intelligent young man but his free market ideological fundamentalism doesn't fully capture the approach that is required to ensure inclusive growth in our country. I also admit that the extremely state centric posture of Communism will also not deliver on this. Yes, we need free enterprise for the economy to grow but the historical fault line of exclusion is still very present in our society and the democratic state needs to intervene wherever this rears its ugly head hence we have entities like the Competition Commission. Yes, we generally have an inefficient state that has pockets of excellence e.g. Competition Commission, National Treasury etc and this require urgent attention.
Only South Africans from privileged backgrounds see a pure market economy as perfect, unfortunately that is not our collective historical reality. We should not be ahistorical when discussing relationships between the individual, broader society and the state. A democratic state must intervene to regulate and facilitate processes towards shared development benefits including in the economic realm, especially with the exclusive history of RSA.

On the issue of private property rights. The state needs to correct the land act of 1913. Unfortunately we can't just ignore the injustices of the land act which ignored property rights when it suited a certain minority. The same minority now wants to advocate for private property rights cause it suites them. Where were those rights in the land act of 1913. Its a double standard. On the Statement of South Korea, If you look at how they managed to increase economic growth. They used the state i.e changed the laws to fix the issue of Chaebols i.e we need to also make sure that Corporate South Africa is accountable in the growth of the country. Stupid example. Why can't JSE corporate adopt a township or rural school and make sure they have grass or make sure that school is at the same level at St Peters.

I’m not sure that Capitalism is the problem.
    The problem is GREED.
We probably need a mix of a free market economy with some social responsibility. People need a hand UP not just a hand OUT.
I just wish that black South Africans would stop thinking that the whites don’t care about poverty or the problems in our country. We love this country too and want to see EVERYONE living happy healthy lives. Please stop being so negative and cynical.

      Great comment.
Africans also understand that some white South Africans also hate poverty. The problem starts when some whites want to rubbish the lived experiences of black people. And by the way this system isn't sustainable, we have seen it for the past 30 years, it opens the door for corruption, maladministration, and incompetence.

Poverty can be a real trap but for many people a lucky break or an opportunity is all that they need to flourish. Some hope. And yes, there are many white peoples who care. Personally I find it totally heartbreaking to see how people live in squatter camps and to watch those people who have chosen not to live a life of crime and haul rubbish on carts just to survive.

Penuel is a brilliant host and one of the great thinkers we have in South Africa. I always look forward to his Monday show, but I'll have to skip this one. This guest is too detached from the daily struggles of ordinary South Africans. He speaks from a position of privilege, and you should have challenged him when they placed doubt on the existence of a third hand in the political violence that took place in the 80s and 90s. This reinforces my views on most YT South Africans. I feel they are too comfortable wrapped up in their privileged bubble to care enough about the real struggles of our nation.

So what was the point of this "conversation"? Absence of coercion? CUTE! The giant logical leaps and ascribing causal powers to things that have nothing to do with one another are just astounding. The laundry job that eventually leads to Capitalism = Freedom, and goes on unchallenged is rather strange. All the countries that were given as examples have a great state involvement in very many ways. The fact that you do not know who the president of Switzerland is does not mean there isn't a great deal of government involvement and social security, there. Singapore, same...UAE, same. The fact that the state/goverment is failing in keeping to its commitment does not immediately lead to "let the free market reign".

We can talk all the fancy schmancy lawdy dawh, but
1.capitalism is owned by the 1%.
    2. It requires that 89% of the population be denied upward mobility.
    3. It doesnt survive when communities are strong and self sufficient, then suddenly you find that something closer to marxism is preferred by the citizen.
To keep my point clear, all historical cases for capitalism have resulted in the majority of people in abject poverty, strung out on imported substances, and having entire countries with no sense of control of their own future.
You can keep that junior school philosophizing for the fools dumb enough not to see beyond the nice suit.

I live in the U.S. This guy is completely coming from the prospective of privilege. He has little to no understanding of the EFFECTS of apartheid or oppression on a people or nation. Those are the talking points of a descendant of an oppressor, to pick yourself up by your bootstraps. If your country were still under apartheid (their control),he wouldn’t be advocating all those things against the government. It’s easy to take responsibility when you’ve been given every advantage in life like he has. His knowledge is basic, the same Western education and training taught before he was born and taught today.

    • @glynisansara
      @glynisansara 9 місяців тому +2

I am curious. You seem to know a great deal about the Ansara family, and I am shocked to hear that we come from a long line of oppressors. Please provide me with of the names of said people as well as examples of their oppression, for my own peace of mind. However as I know of no such people I suspect your comments and judgements that yours is a narrative of victimology, racism and vilification. Logic needs to prevail.; look around. Do all people from the same ethnic group think and behave the same? Clearly not. I support David’s stance towards the government which, through corruption and incompetent governance, have exacerbated poverty and resultant crime. The ANC cannot provide basics like water, electricity, decent education, housing, reasonable healthcare, safety and security and therefore a realisation that sadly it’s up to the individual, has to be reached. The government has proved historically that in 30 years they have not been able to improve the lives of anyone except the greedy new elite who have profited from corruption and graft which has resulted in immense wealth to those individuals to the likes I have never seen and continued poverty to the majority. Clearly poverty is a trap that is extremely difficult to navigate your way out of but it is not impossible. David, as seen in the interview, is very grateful and aware of the privileges that were afforded to him, through his father’s hard work and dedication, (a man who pulled himself up by his bootstraps) which were the building blocks, but it was six years of study, an insatiable desire for knowledge a drive to succeed and a wish to make a difference that have led him to where he is today. You live in the USA. Were you a South African citizen, have you ever visited? Proud of both my sons, David and his brother Christopher, for their achievements, but more importantly for the people they have become. May I suggest that stereotyping and judgements, when one is unaware of all the facts, does not solve anything, and is not solution driven.

exactly, which is why everyone not staying in a capitalist society flocks to the closest one as soon as they can. Why do people want to live in the US, capitalism. Why do people want to get out of the rural areas into the city, capitalism. It's the only system capable of getting self-centered humans (a.k.a. literally everyone) from cooperating productively. It leaves people behind, no doubt, it's not intended to be fair - but history clearly shows that all other types economies need rampant totalitarianism to sustain.

  • @pinnacleinfinity9211

I can't possibly subscribe to Capitalism here in my home country of South Africa, YT South Africans aren't repentant of their injustices to blacks, they refuse to return what they have stolen, they also refuse to acknowledge their ills, injustices and ill gotten gains, the guest today, such a young man, born in 1983,aware that he is addressing a predominantly black audience, utters the fact that he firmly believes the violence between 1984-1994 between blacks, known as black on black violence , is 100% the black mans doing, indicative of how bad the problem we are faced with as a country.
Capitalism is unable to to correct itself, it only has one mandate(which has consequences) and that is profit maximization, they don't care about your view, they don't care how you feel, you further have no say as to who is management, how they are elected, and Policy. Capitalism might work well in other parts of the world, it most certainly hasn't in over 350 years here in RSA, for the black majority.
Capitalism needs an Adult in the room,he can't go unmonitored around the clock, he's extremely irresponsible, racist to the core, unrepentant, no remorse and recalcitrant, Capitalism needs the state to constantly watch over them, the state is the closest person who has our interests at hand, and the fact that we can do something about influencing policy, electing leader's and removing Dictators, Capitalism has Dictators completely unabated sitting in Exco, and we the public can do absolutely nothing about it.
The Private Sector must'nt lecture us on Freedom, they claim Communists are Dictators, how when a Government is democratically elected/removed, we as the public can't elect/remove a CEO/Board etc, they do whatever nonsense things they please, and they want to call Marxism Authoritarian, we as South Africans know who is more authoritarian than who.
I subscribe to Keynesian Economics by the way, as when things go wrong, we need someone to step in, that we selected, that we the public are comfortable with, the state is the only mechanism which affords this platform to us,as the people.
I can never commend the Private Sector and their ill gotten wealth, for us to point out the skills monopoly they have and their large project delivery capacity, without pointing out how they got to that point would be disingenuous.
This episode was nothing short of heart breaking as a black South African, but a stark reminder of what the black majority has been putting up with, hence our strong push/reinforcement of state intervention.
