@mark long I didnt know about the castle. But you know peterborough east was also the nene valley railway east station. Also you know the big lakes near fletton/ stanground behind IKEA, well their nicknames are LB1 and LB2 for (london brick). Some monster carp in them also

Wow, seeing this in my feed gave me a shock. I'm from Peterborough! Never expect anyone to come here though.
I remember back in secondary school we once had to built a model of what we thought that mott and bailey castle would have looked like... mine looked more like a sausage! I also remember that once my grandmother took me out to Crescent Bridge... she thought it would be fun to "count the bolts". It... was not fun :)

Why wouldn’t you expect anyone to come there? I’ve visited Peterborough many many times and in my opinion it is one of my favourite cities in the UK! I think you underestimate your home town!

Most of it is a hellhole now. This country must be an absolute cesspit for this to be one of your favourite cities.
Where did you go in Pboro, what are your other favourite cities ? What are your least favourite ? Where do you live ?
Sadly a large majority of Peterborough has been stripped of its historical charm, yes, but undoubtedly its crowning glory has to be the incredible medieval cathedral. Peterborough Cathedral is an architectural gem; known for its famous “West Front”, a very early English Gothic facade, unrivalled in Gothic architecture. It also possess an exquisite Romanesque interior; retaining an incredible amount of 12th century arches, windows and stone carvings - not to mention the largest of 4 remaining decorated medieval wooden cathedral ceilings (built in around 1200), remaining in Europe. The other medieval buildings, churches and 17th century Guildhall surrounding the cathedral are also of note. It was a fantastic visit for me nonetheless! But if it isn’t for you, there are plenty of other historical places to visit in the county of Cambridgeshire.
Including medieval cities:
-Cambridge *Home to the fourth oldest university in the world (year 1209). Containing loads of medieval college buildings for example at Queens’ College, Corpus Christi College or Trinity. The iconic King’s College Chapel (and other medieval/ baroque religious buildings), pretty streets, punting on the river cam with scenic views of the “backs” of the colleges. Plus bridges such as the Mathematical Bridge or the Bridge of Sighs (Cambridge), Fitzwilliam museum and the Botanical gardens.
-Ely *A scenic and charming riverside city (with a small town feel); completely dwarfed by yet another great English medieval cathedral. Ely Cathedral is a truly unique and striking building, due in part to the mix of gothic and Romanesque on its exterior - that gives it an almost “castle-like” appearance. The originality continues inside, with the highest medieval church nave in England, beautifully painted ceilings and of course the gravity-defying central octagonal tower!

St Ives (Cambridgeshire),

Basically what I’m trying to say is that there’s beauty all around us; whether we choose to see it or not. Plus, this is all coming from someone who doesn’t even live in the county!

Thank you Vicki. Wonderful short film of my home town. My parents met at East Station where they were both employed. When I was young we lived in Fletton and St Margarets Church is where I attended Sunday school.
So now I know why there is a road named Fletton End on the new build Calvert Green "village" in north Bucks. It's built on the site of an old brickworks and most of the roads there are named after types of bricks. Thanks Vicki.
I love how by the most fortuitous bit of luck you began talking just as the cathedral felt an irresistible urge to tell you what time it was. It was almost as though the cranky old church poked its head out of the window to yell, "Do you mind?! There's historical old stone buildings that are still in bed here at this hour and you're out there yakkity-yakking away in that loud Tom Bakeresque Dr. Who Scarf!!"

Good to see top UA-camrs exploring the cultural capital of the Northern Hemisphere. Shame you didn’t have time to visit NVR or Flag Fen. Realistically though to do Peterborough any justice you would have to make a feature length documentary so a very good effort in the short space of time you had.

This is awesome! I live here out of uni term time. Never thought that anyone would voluntarily visit Peterborough. Shame I missed you, I was in the centre for a few hours that morning before catching a train for a flight.
I used to go to peterborough cathedral every weekend and sit in the cloisters, very peaceful,i have loads of pics and the museum is great too,the town centre and queensgate is great to explore. Good bus routes and train links, check out the vinyard at the cathedral it has great links with oliver cromwell who once stayed there and king charles was imprisoned at the cathedral .

My ears pricked up when you mentioned Fletton. It reminded me of my father who spent much of his career in building in London and Flettons were a household name for the millions of bricks 🧱 used in houses in and around the capital.
I couldn't believe I was in Peterborough the same day as Vicki and I have a date-stamped photo of the HST at said station on that date.
I've had a fascination with Peterborough for many years, ever since I read Peter F. Hamilton's Greg Mandel sci-fi trilogy which takes place in a post global warming world with Peterborough at the centre as a rising major city. But whenever I check current videos, it sadly never quite matches up to my unrealistic expectations.
Peterborough will be modernised quite alot over the next few years with a new impressive Railway station, new hotels, offices, retail and a new fully fledged University and campus these all will occur in many new developments starting now and 2021. Hopefully when you visit in a few years we will hopefully look more futuristic.

Little bit of trivia for you. The River Nene's pronunciation is a subject of division between Northamptonshire and (the former fellow Northamptonshire) residents of Peterborough.

Vicki: "I'm not going into the Cathedral..." and then, less than a minute later she's knocking on the Sacristy door. :) Seriously though, I'd be happy for these videos to be twice as long for even more interesting info and sights.
I know many of us have a tendency to take the familiar for granted but as a Peterborian I do feel the City has very little to offer to tourists.
The Cathedral is stunning but I feel it's a jewel in a rather tarnished crown, in addition we do also have the Nene valley railway and Ferry meadows country park but little else.
I suppose 3 major attractions would be worth a day trip or possibly a long weekend but would anyone who lives here honestly recommend Peterborough as a week long holiday location?

I lived in Peterborough and was a Chorister at the Cathedral in the mid 1940's. The bridge you refer to was called (in my time) the Memorial Bridge. In the 1960's My father, trained in all things railway with the M&GN, was the District Manager responsible for causing the straightening up of the railway through Peterborough to enable higher speeds for through trains. The station buildings with its overall glazed roof were demolished and replaced by the current, relatively simple, uninteresting BR station.

we do the exploring .find that lots of old war ww2 built pillboxes and other military buildings .the bricks were made here at the pits or just up the road in whittlesey . by way do you know of all the old station or even the underpaths to the station .now sealed up.

Hey, if you go on the Gloucester-Newport line and get off at Lydney then you can take a 2 minute walk to Lydney junction station on the Dean Forest Railway. It's a really nice heratige line in the forest of Dean with I think 5 stations. Also maybe you could go to Gloucester and explore there. Please consider this.
Just a quick heads up, I heard, only yesterday that there are plans to start building a brand new Peterborough Station.

Regarding the bricks... you should have done Queens Walk and the Fletton Tower.
Good, quick overview of some of the facts about Peterborough, but you really should have gone to RailWorld (which is very close to the London Road bridge). They have Maglevs!

As with Liam I am also from the city. I really enjoyed the ATS series when you came here although we shall not really comment on what happened when you were in the city. lol
Very sad to have missed bumping into you in Peterborough! I sing in the cathedral choir, and for a short month lived opposite the deanery, would have been happy to show you hidden gems of the cathedral precincts

I visited Peterborough on my only significant visit to the UK back in the 80s. It was part of an international youth science conference, and we toured... a box factory. That's all I've seen of the place. But I think that box factory was the furthest north I've ever been on solid ground.

Because of the heat from the chimneys at the London Brick Company it very rarely snowed in the City area of Peterborough for many years. All around the outskirts of the City boundary villages could be cut off...... True fact

I've only ever passed through Peterborough on the train going to London and back. I never knew anything of the history, so that's my box ticked for learning something new every day.

Didn't they use Peterborough Cathedral as the Barchester Cathedral in the BBC series called "Barchester Chronicles" based on the novels by Anthony Trollope? The west front is something I remember.
30 years to build a crossing in Peterborough.... A lot quicker then than it will take them to get a bridge crossing for cars over ECML up the road at bloody Tallington! 😁

When you said "Thurold" it gave me a jump - only last week I took my daughters to see the Bayeux Tapestry replica at Reading Museum and there he was. I've just done a bit more reading, though, and somehow I doubt the one on the tapestry is unlikely to be the one in Peterborough. Shame.
Vicki, next time you have an hour spare in Reading Station you should pop down the road to the Museum and have a look at the tapestry.

My home town! Also now the three times voted worse place in the uk 😭 it’s not all bad, you would enjoy nene valley, flag fen is ok and it still has a few nice places to go or eat...but mostly left behind now sadly.

Although Perkins Engines does not exist anymore as a Ltd company. It is simply a marketing brand of Caterpillar now... They annexed it as a registered business, and even the site is officially Caterpillar Business Park or something like that. They were asking staff (Inc me) not to call the place we worked at Perkins Engines anymore at the time we were being made redundant in 2015. Shameful end to a once famous and proud local engineering giant.
You didn’t mention Katherine of Aragon, Mary Queen of Scots, Old Scarlet (I’ll let you look that one up), Edith Cavell, Henry Royce, John Clare, 11 members of the Sage family who all died on Titanic, the Roman connection, Flag Fen, Must Farm, Kings School that got its charter from Henry VIII, oh and Ernie Wise! The list and history is almost endless. Peterborough may have its issues, what town or city doesn’t but it oozes history if you care to seek it out.

Don’t bother. Most of it is awful now due to mass immigration.
