This game is so addictive. As a townplanner myself it's both great that the city grows organically and presents a challenge but also frustrating that I can't add some sanity to the layout.
yeah, the fact that theres no zoning rules is a pain in the ass. The only thing you really can do is try and lay out roads ahead of time, lets say if you wanted a gridded city for example. There are two problems with that, though: firstly, you usually don't get enough tiles, especially if you ever take motorways. Second, the game doesn't alert you when the playing area expands, so a house could come along and plant itself right where you needed a road to go, and from that point on there is nothing you can do about it. So you have to really watch the expansion closely.
You can, to a small degree, block malls from spawning in certain areas by filling a space or part of the space with roads. You can easily build 2 square roads in a space. Malls never remove roads
I feel like it ruins the game doing it like that. But I don't think the game is going off anything more than a puzzle in the first place. I just like it to look natural. Including adding those useless game ending stop lights.
@@itsyourenotyour9101 I am confused. You feel it ruins the game by applying logic to a puzzle game to survive longer and acheive a higher score? Is that not the point of playing a puzzle game
@@calvingreen1215 Not how they play it. I agree, I dislike watching and playing that way, the fun for me is making roads that flow traffic in cycles keeping things moving without segregation or an overreliance on motorways.
@@calvingreen1215 I said it ruins it making it look segregated. It's stupid, yet I acknowledged it is a puzzle game and you are basically forced to do it. If the cars were smarter you wouldn't have to manipulate it. Instead they always take the shorter path, instead of taking into consideration the actual best route.
Same as you, I intended this game to build a city with lots of connectivity, so each house has access to a variety of amenities (color). Apparently, that's not the case, our residents here only go to work and return home, or they are so patriotic that they visit only one type of mall.
I was going to say: City Planner Plays and Real Civil Engineer need to do something together. It's really interesting too, seeing the difference in road designs between a brit and an american.
The biggest problem I'm seeing is the development. You've got businesses and homes popping up in random places, one at a time. Without the ability to plat out full neighborhoods and districts, you're stuck with these weird roadways that are either underutilized or overcrowded.
You can place roads to stop things from spawning where you don't want them to. For example, if you don't want a large building somewhere make sure there is only room for a house to pop up in that area. It's difficult with the limited roads, but can be done to an extent, especially early on in the game.
I feel like that's what really makes the game a lot of fun, because it gets exponentially more difficult as time goes on. That's why so many people end up losing at around 1200-1400 trips on the first few maps, because by that point if you have a remotely bad road design you've already lost. (I feel like a really big thing to watch out for is having to change roads around when there's already a traffic jam, because even if the change you made would be good in the long term it could completely screw you over before traffic gets the chance to clear up again)
So, this was fun! I don‘t think I have ever heard you this stressed, you usually have such a calming effect on me… A technical info: the mouse arrow is really hard to see, so it was difficult to follow which „this“ you were talking about. Not much you can do about that, though.
This reminds me of trying to play with a much younger sibling; just as you start to be able to craft a narrative out of whatever random toys they've put down, they pull out the next box and start putting more toys everywhere. I love it! As a side note, I don't know what you could really do to fix it, but I find it a little difficult to track when you're talking about a specific area, because the cursor blends in so well to the largely light-colored game.

Other small hints though. Use diagonal roads when possible. It saves road tiles as it lets you move on both the X and Y axis with just one tile. Buildings summon the closest available car by route and will take that route regardless of traffic.
I think the first domino to start toppling everything else was Dark Blue being unable to access their super building very easily. instead of connecting the two houses in the middle with the motorway, you probably would've had way less traffic if you connected to somewhere near the six dark blue houses to the north and left them off your artery and the connected roundabout entirely.
4:04 you're redirecting that house to the right, but you should know that houses can have their driveways diagonal, so you could connect it down and to the left, forming a single light blue neighborhood connecting to a single point on the main road

I love this game! It's so abstract though, I don't know if actual city planning knowledge helps at all! But what am I saying, Phil did way better than I did.
Just wanted to point something out that maybe might help you in the future. If a game has a light background and the mouse is white, it's really difficult to track what you are doing. Maybe being more descriptive of what you are doing, instead of saying "these businesses", might make it easier. Reducing cuts could also improve this. I'm watching on a phone, so finding your mouse and then a cut happening made it frustrating to watch, as if I were playing eye spy for your mouse pointer.
I find the one thing this game needs, is that wherever there is a T-section or a crossroad, having the ability to choose whether certain directions have priority, basically choosing a 4-way stop or a T section stop rather than all having to be either lights/roundabouts or nothing.
I heard more of Phil's soul and life-force leave his body here than all of the times the Verde Beach Arsonist burned down his school and forest preserve+zoo

We need co-op mini-motorways, so that then this guy and RCE can combine their knowledge to make the perfect city
Love then Cities Skylines playthroughs, content is awesome. Ever played Rimworld? Think you could make some great content for it! Keep up the great work man.
Here i am thinking I’ll watch a relaxing CPP video before bed and now I’m very stressed!
You should collab with Real Civil Engineer and do this together through voice chat.
