    I'm getting tired of Hildebolt's land-grabbing ways and think it's time to start making a few claims of my own. But before we can do that, we have to make sure that our army is fully prepared. That means ensuring that we have plenty of weapons, armor, and enough money to purchase every single mercenary that we can.
    Once we're prepared, we'll go to war... but things go in a VERY surprising direction near the end and Hildebolt will catch me a bit off guard...

      Pet foods are a totally unregulated industry. I think anybody who cares about their pets should seriously consider alternatives to canned food and kibble.
      A lot of manufactures in this industry are unscrupulous and the quality of the products is unsafe. Since they're never fed to people there is no legal consequences.
      I make my own fresh food for my dogs, and this company doesn't ship to my country but I think it's a great idea and I'd definitely give it a try if it was available for me.
      I hope your dog got lots of extra pats for their performance, they've got talent!

      I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Farmer's Dog. My dog loved it, but it does have a very high fat content, and the fat content on the labeling with wet dog food is a bit misleading. My dog ended up getting pancreatitis due to having too much fat in her diet. She now has to stay on a low fat diet. Just something to look out for, from one dog lover to another.

    I'm not sure how well the game represents this, but historically, one of the biggest differences in the use cases for crossbows vs the war bows that you have would be that crossbows are easier to learn, where other bows would require years of archery practice. Crossbows in return require more mechanical equipment to produce. Games tend to mix in armor piercing or range differences to keep the differences interesting, but those probably weren't quite as important when actually equipping your troops.

    • @Rikard_Nilsson
      @Rikard_Nilsson 7 днів тому +18

      crossbows are easier to use, it would have levers or cranks to tension it, so you don't need to be strong to use it and once it's tensioned and loaded you don't need strength to hold it or fire. It is a good militia weapon because of that, young and old will be able to utilize it.

    • @HerraHidalgo
      @HerraHidalgo 7 днів тому +27

      Longbows were feared for a reason. They were fast, deadly and could be fiired either accurately or for massed effect. Longbowmen were, however either professionals trained and conditioned from youth or citizen levies that relied on the communities spending a substantial part of their resources on training and maintaining their super-weapon. The famed English or Welsh longbowman fighting abroad was a professional soldier, and treated and paid as such. There are surviving documenrs detailing a longbowman who soldiered for a lord for several decades.
      Shorter bows had limited utility in European warfare. Militiamen and hunters used them, of course.
      Crossbows, sspecially later developments, were deadly. Both as a weapon of militia and in the hands of professionall crossbowmen. They saved resources by being less manpower intensive.

    • @HerraHidalgo
      @HerraHidalgo 7 днів тому +4

      I think leaving a common green in the center of the town to act as a mustering field and festival ground would be something the game should reward. It was a common practise for a reason. Maybe your pops would take their saturdays and sundays off, militia would practise after church, markets would be visited and special events could happen.

    • @PartizanUprising
      @PartizanUprising 7 днів тому +4

      The game unfortunately (but understandably) doesnt reflect the actual difference between crossbows and warbows. Crossbowmen in the game has a range attack of 37 compared to regular archers 17. Also the game doesnt really take into account training time.

    • @justjoe5373

      You could also fire a bow faster, just draw it back and then let it fly. With the crossbow you need to crank the bow part till it's ready to go and put the bolt in before you can take aim and shoot

    I just want to note that please stop dragging a formation on top of the enemy, your troops may just stand there and watch in some cases, because you did not command them with an attack action. They have a high probability of just standing there. Dragging a formation on the map can result in them watching as the enemy walks past them and attacks your archers. Yes, they will just sit and wait if they miss the enemy's walking path by even one pixel.

      i was going to go into a in depth comment about how poorly he's managing his troops but it seems everyone here are already saying everything i wanted to say.
      you need to give troops order and not just march there in this formation. the troops aren't going to do anything without further order. you should have them hold a formation and let the enemy get close to you then charge them for full effectiveness. I love your in depth builds but you need to work on the military side of the game. don't send one unit ahead of the other because you won't be able to reinforce them in time if they get trapped or overwhelmed.

    I know youre completely inundated with comments on tactics etc. Im gonna try and condense things here:
    Mechanics:
    -Set archers to "Fire at Will" and to "Fall Back". Keeps them in the fight and alive without having to micro too much
    -For the love of all that is good and pure in this world, when you shift troops to intercept an enemy click DIRECTLY on the enemy. Drawing a formation works like 30% of the time and takes longer than just directly ordering an attack.
    Strategy:
    -Youre keeping your archers too far away. Especially crossbows. A longbow has solid range on it but crossbows are hard hitters out to like 60 yards at best.
    -Footmen/Brigands are skirmishers and quick to move around. Theyre good at running the enemy down and breaking them
    -Spearmen are a wall with which to break your foes upon. Line them up, hold your ground. Charging into a bunch of sharp sticks usually ends poorly
    -Retinue is your elite troops. Hard to kill. They break your enemy spear lines for you to follow in with Footmen.
    -Pincer. Chasing archers for hundreds of yards is a waste of time and men. Send one troop (like footmen!) Around wide and get BEHIND the archers, then chase them into a spear wall. They cant run away if theyre surrounded.

    Phil, you've fractured your supply chain logistics. The granary and storehouse workers can more easily supply residences when the markets are closer to the actual storage buildings. You only need a stall for each food type you produce and _one_ "general goods" stall for fuel and fabric.
    You may be better off deleting your second granary, upgrading the first one, and assigning more families to it so they can open and operate market stalls too. Hope this helps!

    Play one 1x speed
    The city side of things seems to be going well though, apart from the slight misunderstanding of how the marketplace stalls work. I am shocked if zero fallow and just rotation doesn't deplete the fertility, because unless you're growing very specific crops the ones in-game _all_ drain the life from the soil (c.f. Farthest Frontier mechanics, and real life ofc)
    Can't wait for the denouement! I'm _just_ about to get my first lvl 3 plot in my first playthrough of this build, on the same map. My burghers end up in the bottomless slat mines if they're unlucky!

    • @MadocComadrin
      @MadocComadrin 7 днів тому +3

      There's separate fertility values per crop in the game. E.g. wheat only reduces wheat fertility, flax only reduces flax, etc. I personally don't do 2 consecutive years of the same crop though. I don't think that recovers fast enough all of the time. I either do 3 different crops or 2 crops and one fallow.
      It not 100% realistic AFAIK due to the types of crops involved, but 3 crop systems without fallow have been used IRL.

    You can setup keybinds for each group of militia also by selecting those you wish to bind with shift, then pressing ctrl+1, 2, 3, etc. Also another good tip for combat is that you can click directly above the unit you wish to encounter and that will prevent you from running past through them as you did a couple of times I used to do that a lot before I learned it by watching videos like yours!
    Another detail about the combat of this game is that instead of keeping some of your troops away from combat waiting for "the right time to strike", the best thing you can do is overwhelm the enemy's troops by flanking their frontline. This plummets their morale and by doing this they break formation and flee much faster, which will save you casualties.
    I really love your manor lords series, please keep posting videos of this game!

    When setting up granary's and markets, try to limit the food types in the granary's closest to the markets to end products. Only keep consumable foods in them. Build granary's close to processing places (like windmills) and limit them to grain only with one worker and turn off the 'set up market' option. This will cut down on transport time for the food types in the market, and will reserve movement of ingredients (grain) to one worker who will move it more efficiently. Same with flour and bakeries, build a granary near the bakery but only allow flour to be stored and limit the market set up. Travel times play a huge role in food production as the worker can only move so much at a time, slowing down the production line if they are moving all food types at once.

    you have to chill with the vegetable gardens!! the ones you have are already clogged up due to insufficient logistics which is in turn responsible for the apparent lack of food on the marketplace stalls, adding more veggie gardens is not going to solve that food supply, especially since they all harvest at about the same time clogging up things

  • @Cimeries94
    @Cimeries94 7 днів тому +23

    there are some good comments about fighting below so i won't repeat them, but one more advice, all requirements are counted on basis of burgage plots so its much more efficient to always make plots that has 2 houses 2 families (4 families on lvl3), what i tend to do is make "blocks" of such houses without even place for addon. For artisan houses it's better to have only single house plots (1 family, 2 at lvl3) because that deducts from overall free workforce (better to loose 2 faimilies then 4 at max lvl) so maybe 6-8 plots like that in total, eventually build more as need arrives. If You decide to to take sheep breeding then You will also have a stable meat income at some point if You only setup limits right (50 sheep -25 lambs for starters and then scale up with city) although for a city with infinite iron deposit way towards plate armor is basically infinite money. And for larger cities keep more than 1 free family :)

    • @MadocComadrin
      @MadocComadrin 7 днів тому

      The consumption part is more involved. Availability satisfaction is per plot, but food consumumption (iirc just food, not fuel or clothes) is per family. That is, if you have two level 1 burgage plots, you need two units each of two different types of food for the approval rating; however, the total amount of food (i.e. not per type) needed for consumption will be 2 for both single plots, 3 for one double plot, or 4 for two double plots.

    Keep in mind that your trader limits are surplus amounts not actual total amounts, if lets say you have 90 bows in total, of which 72 are in homes for archers to use, you only have 18 surplus. Setting the export limit to lets say 5 would already be fine, it's not going to take away the bows from the homes, it's not going to take them away from the markets, it's only going to leave 5 max in the storehouses, and families almost always get to those bows that are above that limit than the trader will. It will however slow down forming a new militia group because you have a low surplus. Setting that limit to 72 means you could form 2 groups at a whim, but when are you going to suddenly form 2 militia groups.
    The same goes for importing. If you set import to 10 of an item, it will keep importing items until all of your assigned troops are outfitted with that item and only then will the surplus build up to 10 and stop the import. The lower you set this number the more time it will take to spend your regional quiche so you can use this to make sure you aren't spending everything at once, but it will take longer to outfit a new militia group of 36 at once because you only have lets say 5 in stock.

I would consider setting up in the flats and farming below your hill, where the grain yields will be so much better, and clear cutting sight lines for your archers to stand guard from up on the hill. Then you can have the best of both worlds while still being fairly defensible.

    🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️the market stalls NEED to be next to the places they store goods, NOT near the residences!!! You’re literally making the market workers walk all the way across the map to supply like 5 items at a time. The reason your residences are not happy are because the stalls are being emptied faster than being refilled BECAUSE you are making them walk a million miles away from where they store the goods.
    You had 2 setups (granaries and Storehouses). The left side had 4 families the right side had 5 families. Therefore, the left side needs 4 market stalls RIGHT NEXT the granary and storehouse, and the right side needs 5 market stalls in between the granary and storehouse.
    Yes, the market supplies the residences closest to them first, via WiFi basically. So moving the market to where you did will help those homes, but now there will be other homes that will be affected by not getting resources, because the market stall will not be able to refill the market fast enough, because it takes them 2 days in game to supply 5 houses, vs 10 mins.

    Hey I absolutely love your videos and I want to give u a bit of advice on the warfare side of this game, I haven’t actually played the game before however I do know a lot about medieval battles and I think you need to keep your armies in one place, keep them in a defensive formation around your archers on high ground, never move your troops into the enemies advancing troop. What u want is to never allow them to surround you, just keep them coming at you and it will mean a lot less casualties and can break enemies much faster

    • @marcocinquegrana-eh1zd
      @marcocinquegrana-eh1zd 7 днів тому +7

      Another thing you could do as well is set up most spear units in the front and have your strongest retinue at the sides with your archers behind the main army, wait for the enemy to funnel into the large spear wall and then advance your strongest units around the enemy to obliterate them. If you are really interested in this stuff I recommend searching up Roman or nepolionic battle formations and take reference from that

    One of the ways old towns and cities have historically created burgage plots providing subsistence for a whole family while having density on a street is by having very long, thin plots. That was true in medieval towns, where the plots could be side-by-side and up to an acre in area. That means they could be 200ft long! Have a look for the Atherstone House History Plan for an example.
    That sort of plot continued into the Victorian period and through to the mid 20th Century. If you have a look at a map of an area built up at those times you'll see terraced houses with long, thin gardens. They came in handy during World War 2.
    The could be useful to bear in mind as you grow the periphery of the town at a low density, depending how realistic you want to be.

    I do want to be careful to say that this *may* not be the same in this patch as it was in others, but, from my own playtime, having a field fallow is pretty much "healing" time for the ground. After many years in a save, I even found that fields that started out giving great yields were falling off when I was doing a 2-grow, 1-allow cycle; and I ended up switching it to 1-grow, 2-fallow for some fields, and that did work to "heal" the ground. Going off that, I would say that, if you don't have much good growing land, it makes sense to stick to 2-grow, 1-fallow - and if you have a lot of good growing land, in the long run, it might make sense to just make a lot of fields, and have them at 1-grow, 2-fallow

    • @MadocComadrin
      @MadocComadrin 7 днів тому +2

      You don't have to fallow, but you do have to have 3 different crop types if you don't fallow. Each crop types needs two consecutive years of not being planted (fallow or other crops) for long term fertility stability.

    • @tommeakin1732
      @tommeakin1732 7 днів тому +1

      @@MadocComadrin Hmm are you sure that fallow doesn't give a boost...? Is there anywhere we can look this up? The wiki isn't helpful. To my understanding, fallowing in real life "heals" the ground in a way that rotations don't

    • @williamfoutsii8970
      @williamfoutsii8970 7 днів тому +1

      @@tommeakin1732 in game leaving fields fallow is not needed as long as you do not allow the same crop to be grown twice on the field within a three year cycle. that being said you also have to determine if having the field worked in a crop is worth the effort of having people work it instead of leaving it fallow. In regions with poor fertilities like CCP is playing it is often more rewarding to pasture the fields in-between harvests and invest in the rye and apple tree if you want rich food supplies from it. wheat and rye count as the same crop but rye produces more on less fertility. but you have to spend points to reach it. if CCP starts a farming village in a rich fertile region on next episode then the other fertilities will be less worth working and he can reduce the number of farmers for things like weavers and shepherds instead.

  • @skierrocker
    @skierrocker 6 днів тому

    it is much more efficient to put your markets next to the storehouses/granaries that are storing firewood/cloths/food. Villagers only have to transport the supplies from storage buildings to the marketplace. Once in the marketplace the goods are ¨teleported¨ from the marketplace to burgage plots without the need of physical transport by villagers.
    From my experience the most efficient logistic set up is to have a central market + storehouse/granary hub located equidistant from food and firewood production. In some cases I might make secondary market places closer to production. For example if my hunting grounds are located far away from my main farming area.

    24:50 Why would you guess that? Keeping in mind that the dev seems to like a more historical spin; historically, they just had different strengths and weaknesses, hence they lived alongside one another. The tl;dr is that the greatest strength that crossbows had was that pretty much anyone could learn to use one (even the most powerful of crossbows) in a day or so. Theoretically, you could have a child learn to shoot the most powerful crossbows (if they had something to lean on lol). The downside is that even light crossbows shoot *way* slower than bows, and they're more expensive than bows. The one big problem with bows is that it takes years of training to shoot high poundage bows.
    I'd love to see Manorlords have all of this as game mechanics.
    Also, just to snuff a misunderstanding that I had, the high end of crossbows aren't more powerful than the high end of bows. The poundages of crossbows get much higher, but steel limbs are wildly inefficient, with a short power stroke. When you look at energy on target they end up sitting in roughly the same playing field.

    considering the amount of farming you're doing, bakeries would probably be a great choice for one of the remaining dev points. Orchards are very good for some easy food variety. Chain mail and armor too since you have unlimited Iron to craft and sell them. The sheeps naturally reproduce, the perk would just increase the rate, and you dont need many sheeps for clothing, but if you wanna go butcher you'll need A LOT.

    The reason you're getting so many thumbs down in the town is because those houses are empty and empty house cannot have their needs met. They do not contribute to the overall happiness of the town so just ignore the thumbs domn notifications unless the building has people living in it. I think its likely a bug or something that needs to be refined in development. At 22:28 it says you have 10 buildings free for people to move in with 14 thumbs down notifications. You likely have around 4ish actually buildings that are not getting their needs met. I say 4ish because some of your lots that have an extra building can have a vacant spot for a new family but the other inhabitants are likely already having their needs met.
    Also, when at war make sure you send your mercenaries in first. They will take the casualities instead of your villagers. Once you disband them the mercenaries will automatically be back at full strength. Your villagers are far more valuable. And instead of sending your units to attack just line up your melee units 3-4 men deep and just defend while your archers shoot from behind them. Then send spare groups around to flank them. You deal more damage while taking less from a defended position.

    As far as I can tell militia from Level 1 homes will wear gambesons, Level 2 will wear mail armor if it's available. So as you level up homes from 1-2 the soldiers will return their gambesons to storage and draw mail armor as it's available. Any level can wear a helmet. My guess is that somewhere down the line level 3 residents could wear plate armor and become squires to the retinue.

    I love your content! I learned a lot about city building in this game from you. One suggestion that I have is that you are severely over estimating the strength of the bandits. With that sized army you don't even need mercenaries for Hildabolt. Mercenaries are more for the early game when you dont have an army yet. You just need to slow down a little bit during battles and let them come to you so you are in formation.
