I believe that if your S-tier Pixar fare is the fancy restaurant where you order Crème brûlée, then the Mario movie is a hot summer day and someone hands you a waffle cone filled with your favorite ice cream. The latter isn't going to when any prestigious awards, but there's nothing wrong with enjoying the heck out of it.

I just rewatched this movie yesterday in Imax, and I probably enjoyed it just as much if not more so than the first time. I think one person described it best when they said it was like a theme park ride, where despite moving incredibly fast and not having the most substance to it, it’s just such a fun and entertaining thrill ride filled to the brim with delightful callbacks to the entire franchise that I had a smile on my face for pretty much the entire runtime. And it only makes me look even more forward to the inevitable sequel or even future Nintendo movie adaptations. I’m even considering seeing it a third time, since as a longtime Mario fan, this movie is basically everything I could’ve wanted and more.

There’s a Rolling Stone interview with Miyamoto, and the licensed music was his preference. He said those scenes were edited to the licensed music first…then they tried it with original score, and he liked the licensed songs better - so they went with that. It’s cool that they put the unused “experiment” tracks on the soundtrack.

The best way I have found to explain the film to people is to think of it like a movie version of the old Mario bros. cartoons. Although I also find it amusing for those people that saw the movie and wondered who Mario was, as the closest pop culture reference I could think of this Mickey Mouse. And if Disney ever made a movie called The Mickey Mouse movie based on the old Mickey Mouse cartoons and someone were to watch it ask who is this character that way I think a lot of people would look at them almost in the same way. I mean they have a lot of similar ways to explain the characters as far as what they represent.

I think the fact that it's unashamedly a video game movie is kinda revolutionary
Considering how much money it's made it'll hopefully kill the stigma that other adaptations have where they seem to be ashamed of being video game adaptations, even decent ones like the first Sonic movie

That's about what you'd expect, but the first 20 minutes of the movie were so good I dared to dream that we were in for something truly special. Mario and Luigi being insecure about their new job, having friction with their family and supporting each other... It was really good stuff. I'm sure this has already been thought up, but they COULD work 1-ups into the story by making it some sort of super rare, legendary, holy grail level thing in universe.
Maybe in a sequel they can go on a quest for the mythically 1-up that's only rumored to exist, and it grants the power to revive the dead.
They could spin it either way too; maybe Mario and Co fo on a quest to find it to save a friend (toad?), Or have a villain go for it to to revive a great evil.
Like, and I guess possible spoilers here for anyone who hasn't seen it:
Since Bowser was captured in the end, and never fell into a fiery lava death like I secretly hoped would happen... a sequel story could easily start similarly to Mario RPG, princess has already been captured and the opening scene is Mario defeating Bowser, classic lava pitt scene, Mario becomes a Hero to the Mushroom kingdom, he's the famous Mario known throughout the lands for his powerful jump, and his marvelous mustache.
Introduce Bowser Jr holding a grudge against this dude's fame, and using his army to find the 1-up to resurrect Bowser.
Yes it's cookie a cutter story, but if you make it GOOD, the masses will still come back for more. The quality was there in terms of visuals for this first movie, and the cast was surprisingly solid. All they really need to do is work on the pacing, they already have a fun product. These movies are meant to sell to mainstream audiences, and those audiences won't go in expecting Shakespeare, but just elevate the emotional parts to at least Pixar level stuff, and I'd say we're eating well as fans of the franchise.
***Edit**** oh, and since I doubt they'd go TOO dark, Bowser doesn't have to be dead-dead. They can play Dry Bowser for laughs, say Kameks magic can only resurrect the bones, not the spirit, and the 1-up is used to bring him back to life, not just be reanimated.

Funny that they insist its a good movie yet every other second they have to add its not the most revolutionary movie or that it wouldn't be nominated for anything. I've seen the movie twice now and I think people are just to scared to admit that the movie sucked because they just like Mario. Were this an original character people would not be giving it the praise they are. Even as an origin story the movie sucked due to lack of storytelling and the fact that Mario is treated like a joke throughout the entire movie but people appear to be too blinded by references and the Nintendo logo to see that.

16:50 “Rings never do what they do in the games” Correction: special stage warp rings have actually been a thing since Sonic 1.
Although the Sonic movies don’t feature special stages, the portal like abilities of the warp rings themselves are still very much an accurate representation of the game mechanics they’re based on.
They not only serve as a deep cut reference, but as a relevant plot device and world building tool.
Therefore, while your point still stands that the Sonic movies aren’t nearly as faithful to the source material as the Super Mario Bros movie, they still deserve credit where credit is due.
Despite this albeit minor oversight, I rather enjoyed listening to your review.

I went in to the movie with relatively low expectations, it's an Illumination film, I expected a "fine" movie, nothing extraordinary nor god awful, just fine enough for very little kids to enjoy and adults to tolerate.
And, y'know, yeah I guess I got that... Sorta.
I can see why a very small child would enjoy it, it's colorful and bouncy. But for anyone else? God, that thing was shit.
People call it faithful to the games but Mario is built upon ambition and creativity, this was the most cookie cutter basic NOTHING film. I can even barely call it a movie, because it's missing anything that consists of adapting a series into a film! There's barely a story, the writing was just replaced with 80's cartoon trope dialogue and references and there's barely any actual character building!
And the references? God, it felt like the equivalent of keys jiggling in front of me. References are fine as complimentary to the story, not LITERALLY THE WHOLE POINT! I'm not gonna clap because you grabbed something off the wiki and flashed it on screen every few seconds, give me an actual reason to follow the narrative!
Otherwise, why do I even want to watch this in movie form? I can just play the fuckin' games and get the same feelings, but they're not being shoved in my face and there's more for me to actually be interested in.
This was just a commercial, a commercial for the games and Super Nintendo World, NOT a passion project building off the creative legacy this series has established, it's just parading in its skin if anything.
Genuinely it baffles me that not too long ago we got genuinely one of the best big budget animated films in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and people put this mediocre garbage in the same level of quality as that!
Am I salty? Sure, probably! But seeing animation for years be treated as just as a kids thing and seeing it progressively get more respect as time goes on and seeing such a beacon of fun and creativity bring all that shit down by people excusing it as "It doesn't have to be great, it's just for kids" is such a BULLSHIT excuse so that we can all praise mediocrity!
