I remember reading a book awhile back. It was about a German pilot in WWII fighting in Africa. He, like at least 2/3rds of the Germans, weren't Nazi's. And after the war was lost for them, he was condemned for being a pilot by his fellow Germans, because they held a lot of the blame for the war being lost in their country in the immediate aftermath. In our age, its easy to cast blame. Back then...information was a lot harder to come by.

The young men were pretty much victims of propaganda. The 110 sailors rescued by the British said they had'n actually met a Britt before and they told the British sailors treated them very well and they were the nicest people the Germans had ever met. Some opposite side sailors became friends for their lifetime. Bismarck and Titanic were actually found by the same man: Robert Ballard.
But here is the most incredible survivor story of Bismarck (and some more in the future):
    Bismarck
The black and white patched cat was supposedly owned by an unknown crewman of the German battleship Bismarck and was on board the ship on 18 May 1941 when he set sail on Operation Rheinübung (German for Rhine Exercise), Bismarck's only mission. Bismarck was sunk after a fierce sea-battle on 27 May, from which only 115 from her crew of over 2,100 survived. Hours later, Oscar was found floating on a board and picked from the water by the British destroyer HMS Cossack. Unaware of what his name had been on Bismarck, the crew of Cossack named their new mascot "Oscar"
    HMS Cossack
The cat served on board Cossack for the next few months as the ship carried out convoy escort duties in the Mediterranean Sea and north Atlantic Ocean. On 24 October 1941, Cossack was escorting a convoy from Gibraltar to Great Britain when she was severely damaged by a torpedo fired by the German submarine U-563. Crew were transferred to the destroyer HMS Legion, and an attempt was made to tow the badly listing Cossack back to Gibraltar. However, worsening weather conditions meant the task became impossible and had to be abandoned. On 27 October, a day after the tow was slipped, Cossack sank to the west of Gibraltar. The initial explosion had blown off one third of the forward section of the ship, killing 159 of the crew, but Oscar survived this too and was brought to the shore establishment in Gibraltar.
    HMS Ark Royal
Now nicknamed "Unsinkable Sam", the cat was soon transferred to the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, which coincidentally had been instrumental in the destruction of Bismarck (along with Cossack). However, Sam was to find no more luck there, and when returning from Malta on 14 November 1941 this ship too was torpedoed, this time by U-81. Attempts were also made to tow Ark Royal to Gibraltar, but the unstoppable inflow of water made the task futile. The carrier rolled over and sank 30 miles from Gibraltar. The slow rate at which the ship sank meant that all but one of the crew could be saved. The survivors, including Sam, who had been found clinging to a floating plank by a Motor Launch and described as "angry but quite unharmed"] were transferred to HMS Lightning and the same HMS Legion which had rescued the crew of Cossack. Legion would itself be sunk in 1942, and Lightning in 1943.
The loss of Ark Royal proved the end of Sam's shipborne career. He was transferred first to the offices of the Governor of Gibraltar and then sent back to the United Kingdom, where he saw out the remainder of the war living in a seaman's home in Belfast called the "Home for Sailors". Sam died in 1955. A pastel portrait of Sam (titled Oscar, the Bismarck's Cat) by the artist Georgina Shaw-Baker is in the possession of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

It's funny how you mention that boats and ships are always called "she's". Bismarck was in fact the exception. It was one of the largest battleships of the time with incredibly powerful guns, a "beast made of steel" as Sabaton called it. Bismarck's captain, Ernst von Lindemann, took all this into consideration and concluded that his ship was simply too big, too strong, too powerful, just too f*cking brutal and badass to be considered a "she." Thus Lindemann referred to Bismarck as a "he" and recommended that everyone on the ship follow suit. So Bismarck is the only ship in history to bear masculine pronouns. You can even hear it in the lyrics. "HE was made to rule the waves." "HIS guns have gone silent at last."
I hope I don't sound misgonystic, bit there's just a certain undeniable level of machismo here that fits perfectly.
Also the name of the boat the band was on, Primo Victoria, is another awesome song by Sabaton. You should check it out; it's about the D-Day landings at Normandy.

Ships dont *always* have female designations. The Bismarck's service was determined to be so distinctive by the kreigsmarine it was given a male title, which is rare. Thats why the Bismarck is always referred to as "he" or "him" in German naval history.
*edit: some background on what happened with the Bismarck, it found and sunk the British HMS Hood by detonating its ammo storage, which is why the British started hunting it. And it wasn't just a snap to sink the Bismarck either. They spent almost a day hitting it with shells and the Bismarck didn't take enough damage to sink it. The crew determined it was beyond salvage and decided to scuttle the ship themselves

Don't get me wrong. I'm sure, every part of the German military had soldiers fighting in them that were total Nazis. But that just wasn't the case for everyone. Especially in the Kriegsmarine (Navy) and the Luftwaffe (Airforce).

This song is actually about the fairly one-sided Last Battle of the Battleship Bismarck. It consisted of the titular ship coming under attack from an absolute onslaught conducted by the Royal Navy. The British forces consisted of two battleships, two heavy cruisers, a single light cruiser, seven destroyers, and an aircraft carrier.
The battle lasted almost two hours, with Bismarck being unable to escape due to having its rudder disabled by torpedo bombers. By the time it sank, Bismarck is estimated to have taken around 500 direct hits from shells 133mm/5.2 inches or larger, along with a total of eight torpedoes. It is debated whether or not scuttling charges were used by the Germans, but even if they didn't, that's a hell of a beating. All weapons systems had been destroyed, Bismarck was aflame from stem to stern, and almost all of the crew were dead when it finally went under.

As a (kinda) young German whose great-grandpas fought in Russia and in Italy for the Nazis I can only say that I wouldn't be here if they hadn't. One fought in the Waffen-SS and the other in the regular German Wehrmacht. Both were given the same ultimatum. Either fight for the Nazis or see your whole family wiped out. No matter how much of a "pure-blood" you are.
Of course there's no excuse for what they did during that time but they did what they had to to keep their loved ones alive within their own country, for which they had to go through hell. I guess that's enough to show how f*cked up that time was, even for German barely-adults like my g-granddads were.

Attack of the Deadmen. (Makes me cry) WWI Russians. Winged Hussars (Massive Meme among the fanbase)
A key part in understanding World War 2 Germany is to separate the Nazi ruling party, and the German people. It is said that the conditions forced upon Germany at the end of the Great War, guaranteed World War 2. It's pretty heartbreaking actually.
WW2 is the story of how the German people learned the hard way that if someone promises you something too good to be true, it really really is.

If you know.. Bismarck sunk the "Allmighty Hood" in the 3rd salve... and afterwards the "whole british fleet" was needed to hunt this ship. And in the end they sunk themselves before got shot down finally after an epic, long battle. And this makes my cry, and really really proud of this brave german sailors with "the world on their heel", without knowing ANYTHING what was going on in their country at this time. ... so.. dont cheer "yes" ... "yes...got them" and lern some serious history, and not what is told by the former "allies", and "left" propaganda like music videos nowadays ;) So the real, brave heroes in this battle were the germans....and not the "allies" who needed a full fleet to hunt 1 ship, because of their ego. Reminds me back on the days, when north-america got invaded for "living habitat" and a complete culture got "terminated" ... but this time the "invadors" won and it was OK. ;) Do you understand? So in conclusion: Thank you Sabaton for holding up the Flags, for the German Battleship Bismarck!!!👍

Some points to note of why some people would join the Wehrmacht or the SS.
For one, it's good to remember that the word 'Nazi' didn't have the same meaning and implication as it does today. People didn't know of the cruelty happening at the time as it was a secret, which got revealed after the fall of the Third Reich.
Another thing to remember is that we're talking about Europe and what is the other thing people were afraid of at the time? Communism.
A lot of people joined the Nazis, simply to fight communism. A prime example of this would be Larry A Thorne, or Lauri Törni, also known as the soldier of 3 armies.
Larry Thorne was born in Finland as Lauri Törni and joined the Finnish military as the Soviets attacked Finland. During the conflict, Larry lost his hometown and that kind of thing gets to a man. After the war Larry joined in illegal (Since Finland was at peace with the Soviets at the time) weapon caching to fight the Soviets if they tried invading again and was arrested for it. Later on, he joined an illegal training company under the Waffen-SS and joined the Nazi army to continue the fight against the Soviets. This action branded him as a traitor and so he overtime lost his homeland essentially. Some time later he illegally entered the USA and joined the US army to gain citizenship. He eventually joined the Special Forces Green Berets, acting as an instructor and leading his own unit. He eventually perished on a freak helicopter incident in Vietnam as he was battling the Vietcong.
So here we have a Finnish - American war hero, buried in Arlington with full honours, and yet he was also a genuine Waffen-SS soldier.
Some people say that he learned that there are statistically more communists dead than alive, so he went to hell to continue his purge of communism there.
Others say that he's kept in a cryostasis in a secret American institute in case of a future communist uprise.

The reason why the Royal Navy hunted down the Bismarck and sunk her was because during the battle of the Denmark strait the British battleship HMS Prince of Wales an battle cruiser HMS hood went after the German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen and a battle in sued and. 1, 15 inch armor piercing shell from the Bismark slammed in HMS hood and detonated her only three men survived. The battleship HMS prince of Wales was able to escape but she had medium damage so after hood was sunk which was the pride of the royal navy they wanted to hunt down Bismarck and sink her plus Bismarck was damaged after the battle. So Bismarck tried to make it to occupied France for repairs but the Royal Navy was able to catch her because after a single torpedo from a fairy sword fish by plane from HMS Ark Royal an aircraft carrier. That torpedo was able to hit Bismarck in her rudder and jam it and she was stuck going in a circle. After that two British battleships and two heavy cruiser‘s were able to get within range and fire upon her. The battle lasted for 74 minutes and then the mighty Bismarck was sunk but it’s still debated if she was sunk by British gun fire or scuttle by her own crew.

The story of the Bismarck. The Bismarck was built by the Germans in 1936 because Hitler want to control the sea for his big plan. But the problem was the Germans have not to much battleships and they need some. So they built to ship. The ships name was Bismarck and Tirpitz this to ship was the biggest battleship on the Atlantic ocean. In the 1941 the Bismarck got a mission from Hitler. The mission was her and the Prinz Eugen needs to destroy all the cargo ship coming from New Yorck. But they maneg to meet whit the HMS Hood and that was the first battle where the Bismarck was in action. The Bismarck meneg to sink the Hood but he gets hit to do the Bismarck torn back and try to go back to French( In this year was French fall of by the Germans). But the Germans didn't know the British soldiers have a plan which was how to sink the Bismarck. First they sendt the Ark Royal aircraft carrier to sink the Bismarck. But you can se in the video that the Bismarck gets hit and maneg to get away from there. The Bismarck get a torpido in her but and destroy one of the too steering gear qich means they can't d get away from a torpido. After some few hour the British ships spot the Bismarck again but now the Bismarck was alone and the British have 3 or 4 ships. The Germans try to defeat them but the Bismarck get some critical hit. They can't repair the ship cuz there was no one who help to the Bismarck but the British soldiers can repair it and they can use it agans the Germans. So the German seaman's blow op the Bismarck and that was her last battle on the sea. Thank you if you read this comment and I want to say sorry for my bad English cuz I can't speak really good. I hope you will get some information about the Bismarck bey.

Bismarck, build SO tough the Brittish couldn't sink him. The crew scuttled the ship to prevent the Brittish from getting their hands on it.

Historians and the crews that studied the wreckage of the Bismarck unanimously concluded that the Bismarck would have sunk from all the damage he received.

Also at the point of scuttling, the Bismarck was a complete mission kill. Main guns were knocked out, secondaries were knocked out and she was effectively adrift. Many ships once they reached this state were scuttled to prevent the wreck from being captured by the enemy.

Funny that you should mention that Brits and Americans call ships “she”. Germans use “he” (Russians too, by the way, because the word for ship is masculine), as they sing in the song

Hey Jen, you noticed the significance of the compass. Look closely at the inside of the lid. The captain wrote the coordinates of the battle inside the lid. He knew the outcome of the battle. The Bismarck was a mighty battleship, but it was alone against multiple British ships.

Maybe they name boats ”she” because when ”she” sinks the man is draged down too. As in real life??

    • @cytorakdemon

Ships and boats were referred to as "She" because the men on board wanted to be safe and secure while traveling at sea, and the ship was seen as a motherly figure.
Bismarck was referred to as He, because, according to the Captain, "there is nothing Maternal about the ship".

Peoples ideas change throughout their lives. Even if someone grew up in Germany pre WWII, was conscripted into the army (or joined for love of country/ etc.), but either didn't agree with Hitler, or if they did at the time, many eventually had a change of heart. To me it seems very ignorant and overly cruel to label them forever "natzi's" after they changed their ways ... minus those who still continued to believe in/support natzi-like ideals.

One shell of the Bismarck (caliber 380mm) was about the size of a person and was 800kg heavy. The firing range was over 35km (or nearly 22 miles). And the Bismarck had 8 canons.

3:10 They do indeed refer to boats / ships as she's and hers. Some theorize that it was a sexist joke when it first emerged. Some would see the care, dedication and time to maintain the vessel similar to that of having a wife. Others theorize that goddess / mother figures would look after the ship and her crew. Bismarck Captain Lindemann however designated the Bismarck as a HE in view of its awesome power. Just a little piece of trivia :)

Sabaton is about history I only have one Cd the last stand cd has The winged hussars, about the relief of the siege of Vienna in 1683, The last stand in 1527 about the Attack on the Pope , Shiroyama the samurai rebellion in the 1870's . the Nazis used propaganda from 1932 on to say everybody was inferior to the German people. I just found the band in 2019 and as a history nut WWII in particular so learning about other moments in history around the world is great.

They were not all Nazis. On Bismarck served 2065 men and only 110 could be saved from the cold waters of the Noth Atlantic. Most of the young soldiers were just normal people who served their country when called, like any other soldier in the world would have. If your country calls for soldiers to defend its cause you follow that call or be marked as a traitor and possibly be executed for treason especially in a regime like in Germany of 1933 to 1945. Many soldiers in the Luftwaffe (German Airforce) or Kriegsmarine (German Navy) disliked Hitler and his propaganda and i am sure many soldiers in the Wehrmacht (German Army) did too. Even many officers of the regular troops stood opposed to Hitler, but he was in command and they were to much a soldier not to follow these commands. How many americans would follow the orders of an american president, no matter what? It is your president calling for the good of your country so many would obey, right? And take in consideration, that the atrocities that the Hitler-regime did to the Jews, Sinti and Roma and other people in concentration camps were not really known to the normal soldier at that time. The "Waffen-SS"-soldiers were someting different. These guys were the soldiers of the Nazi-party and maby knew what was happening in Europe and they followed Hitler out of belief.
So don't call every German who fought in WW2 a Nazi. It is like calling every American a Cowboy. Generalization is never a good thing when it comes to people.
Sabaton knows this, because they never take sides in their songs. They only tell history as it happened and sing about legendary and heroic military events. Like "40-1" about these 720 polish soldiers who resisted 40.000 german soldiers for 3 days, or the "Winged Hussars" when Polish cavalry broke the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683 or "Seven pillars of Wisdom" about Lamrence of Arabia in WWI, or "Night Witches - animated story video" about an all female bomber regiment of the Russians or "No bullets fly - animated story video" About a German pilot who rembered the words of his commander "If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself." when he saw a badly damaged american bomber. Later he said: "To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn't shoot them down." Just check "Franz Stigler" on Wikipedia.
In a war human beings fight over territories, beliefs, religions or ideologies but they are still human beings and not mindless monsters or robots. There are always these things called humanity, honor and respect.
