THAT was a smart buy. These were great looking cars. Now with the 350 under the hood, it has some power to really make it move. Agreed - clean up, prime it, ship it - make a few bucks. Someone would LOVE to have that. The Cutlass and the Monte Carlo of this era just had the right look.
Wish GM would go back to building cool looking affordable cars like this (and I'm a Ford guy!).

fabulousprofound we tear the cars up... we rebuild the entire suspension strengthening it we rebuild the frame making it way stronger most of the time we do the interior and body work making factory fresh update the sounds usually throw a brand new 350 in it yet we destroy cars cause we build ours to hop 20-100 inches off the ground GTFOH

fabulousprofound those low rider ones are the to Best Buy just like Cadillac cam outlined if you want something with frame strengthening already done, just take out the low rider stuff, new body mounts and whatever else for peace of mind...beats buying one that was driven to and from the bingo game and looks mint but the frame is rotted

That is one fairly decent GM G body you scored right there. A car from an era when GM was the biggest auto manufacturer in the world, in a time when most North American households had one sitting in their driveways in the version of their favoured division. Judging by the condition, that would be one vehicle worthy of restoring into a restomod or cool daily driver with the right body work and mechanical refresh. It's interesting that the PRNDL indicator at the bottom indicates it came originally equipped with a three speed automatic. The G bodies were in production from 1978 up until around 1984 for the four door versions. But I think the two door versions (Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Cutlass and Regal) continued on until 1987 before production finally at the time when all the front wheel drive cars had well taken over their market. But if I'm not mistaken, in 1984 that car should've came originally equipped with a four speed automatic if it had been originally equipped with the 305 Chevy small block V8 (a 350 was never an option from the factory). Only if it had been equipped with a 229 V6 (basically a Chevy 305 minus two cylinders) originally, that would explain the three speed automatic. Check the trunk floor carefully. That's typically where they like to rust. The rear license plate holder also folds downward to reveal and enable access to the fuel filler if I remember correctly. Wow, I can't believe I know so much about these GMs since I'm actually a die hard blue oval guy who's been turning wrenches at blue oval dealerships since 2000.

Reverse?! As long as she’ll light the tires up you can just doughnut your way out of tight parking. Great find. My favorite era for these. Not a bloated as the mid 70’s cars, not the “bloat on a budget” of the 78 - 80 downsize either. Just crisp yet flowing lines with a nice amount of chrome. Always loved that dash too. Nice and open. Doesn’t pen you in. That interior (with a good cleaning) just makes you want to stretch out and cruise. One hand resting on the top of the wheel and one slung over the passengers seat back. Windows down. Just floating down the road headed to the lake. Summer. Good times. Better times than we are in now - damn, that’s a lot of imagery from just one semi rusted malaise era GM mush mobile. Maybe I need to get me one!

Lol my friend drove his 1995 Toyota previa For 10 years with no Reverse gear. The Van looked In drove great with the exception of The 4 speed automatic transmission that forgot It's reverse gear. He has donated it about 6 years ago to a local Baptist church who still drives it today. Christmas time my friend was driving through the parking lot in spotted the backup lights on the Van brightly lit. He was so excited to see that they had fixed the transmission in the Van could finally backup. After a while it didn't even bother him and he made an art out of parking in places where he could always drive forward. That Van hauled around a lot of band equipment and still holds a lot of our youth in the back cargo area. That Monte Carlo is a heap though

I've got fond G-body memories! I had a '85 in 1993 that I paid $600 for - it got hit from every direction, plus severely overheated. I did drive it home with no work, aside from a brake job later. The valve seals were as hard as a brick, so it left a plume of blue smoke everywhere I went! Sounded just like that one there, too - I used to get pulled over by MA state troopers every single time I passed one coming the opposite direction. That thing could take sharp right hand turns without any steering input, thanks to a pretzeled control arm. It also never had second gear! It just skipped right over into 3rd, lol. I drove that thing for 2.5 years - took it to the mountains of NH, NYC, and towed a trailer with 3 ATVs on it every Sunday to our riding spot. Only left me stranded once with a bad starter, right in front of the autoparts store! I was buying my bi-weekly case of oil. With all it's ugliness, that car ran great with the stock 305, and rode beautifully! First I lost reverse, and finally the trans let go, and all I had was 1st gear. I drove it to a junkyard that would give $100 for any car you drove there. I had to argue with the guy! HAHAHA! It was ROUGH! He says to me, "You hit everything but the lottery with that thing!" I told him I just put a new starter in, and he finally relented. :D Here's a couple pics from winter of '93:

The original G body GM was manufactured in 1969 and was the Pontiac Grand Prix platform. In 1970 Chevrolet adopted the G body platform for the 70-72 Monte Carlos. In 73 GM dropped the G body platform, using the A body platform for the mid sized line up. Up until 1978my when they returned the G body platform back in their line up.
All G body's shared the same frame. GM controlled ride quality between each model by the positioning, adding, or deletion of body mounts , bushings
For example - The Grand National/ Turbo T had to have a tight feel so every body mount received a bushing total of 14 locations
While the Buick Regal on had 12, 2 missing mid ship to give it a floating feel.
Same goes for the Monte Carlo SS vs. Monte LS
Pontiac G.P SJ vs. LJ ,Olds Cutlass vs. Olds 442

That things got a real lope to it. I also remember your video about a light blue Camry with a similar transmission problem. Strange how such a different power train can have such a similar problem. I also like that it's not painted a garish color and doesn't have stupidly large rims.

I loaned a 4Runner to a friend once to take hunting. When she brought it back, we met in the parking lot where I worked. While I was waiting, a scrap truck came in to tow another car out of the lot. On the back of that scrap truck was an 81 Caprice. I know it's not a G Body, but it was a 2 door, 2 tone grey with grey interior, no vinyl top car. I went and talked to the man, and paid $150 for it, what the scrap yard would have given him. I still have that stupid thing, it's one of my favorite cars. It would have been recycled into a crappy chinese laundry set by now if I hadn't. People can fault it all they want for being worn out, but hey, let's see the nicer one that they have?

Nice, repair or replace the transmission and sell it off. If everything works it should be worth a bit more and l'm sure you have a good one around. Wouldn't be too much extra work considering.

I miss these old school cars from the 70s and the 80s, you don't see these cars very much anymore because most people drive cars from the 90s or the 2000s onwards.

Before writing the transmission off it might be worth having a very good look at the shift linkage. One imagines that, with it having had a larger replacement engine, the transmission is going to have been out and someone could have messed up the adjustment so that you're only getting the gears from neutral down, so neutral, drive etc...

I say it’s worth it even though it’s not an SS. My dad had one back in the day. It was a white SS with red SS decals and T-tops. It had everything you would expect to find on an SS model. It wasn’t an Aero Coupe. It came stock with a V8. It sounded best when it needed exhaust work. I’m glad the guy V8 swapped yours. You have to have a V8 in a big car like that.
