  • For this album review, Vince Staples delivered his most layered and potent record to date, and quite possibly one of the best albums of 2024.
Best Songs: 'Black&Blue’, ‘Children’s Song’, ‘Etoufee’, ‘Radio’, ‘Nothing Matters’, ‘Little Homies’, ‘Freemen’
Worst Song: ‘Shame on the Devil’ (although not really, it's still REALLY good)

    Pretty excellent review, as ever.
And incidentally- I wholly agree with this one.

Vince has not made a bad album. His catalogue needs to be talked about more.

Great review. Your breakdown made me decide to spin it again, since I found it really dull on first listen. Additionally, I'm now realising just how unnecessary number scores are when reviewing music.

Damn, Shame on the Devil on the worst is surprising, I feel like its one of the most complete songs on the album.

He still said it’s REALLY good. That just shows how great the album is for him

He did acknowledge that it is still a really great song. Emphasis on REALLY.

@@ruke2566I caught that, but as the worst? I’d give it to Justin (and the song is still good) speaks for the quality of the album 💿

@@yo-man928 Funny enough I actually do agree with you hahaha. Felt like the melody is a bit empty, but it still does work with the lyrical theme of that song.

Vince's records are weird for me, I do like him and don't think he made a bad album, but also nothing I'd given above a 7, this one included, but it's probably my favorite, hope it'll grow on me

You're getting lost in all those buzz words like misogyny, masculinity, stereotypes, privilege... I think it would be helpful if you try to think about things in different dimensions. Also less self righteousness & grandstanding would help. Otherwise, you passion for music is great

...those aren't buzzwords, dude, there's philosophical meaning that Vince is looking to directly reference and explore. Maybe it's worth some introspection on your part if they bother you so much.

@@lordfoxtrot8330 you're implying a lot of shit about me in the comments of a Vince Staples review, and given his content is pretty brutally realist in exploring all of those ideas anyway, moral purity be damned... I dunno, if he can do it, why can't you?

@@lordfoxtrot8330 I'm Canadian, so I don't have to follow American political polarization, but 'evil' is a fascinating word here, mostly because there are conservative themes in rap music and even on this album, where Vince often frames the bad situation as inevitable - you can't regulate evil, after all, even with systemic analysis (and he's not the only one, Pusha-T does the same). It's fascinating in the context of this album because for as much as he tries to get into the weeds with all the analysis of machismo and emotional vulnerability, he comes out of the other side with 'yeah, but the reality of the streets is...' - there's a dejected realism that makes sense why you might like this. And being a good critic means I can engage on all of those levels ;)
