Great video on this. It would have helped me on my kick install three years ago. I bought a DRZ that had a Rekluse Clutch which precludes bump starting. After a close call due to a weak battery, I installed a kick starter, which has come in handy a couple of times most recently on an adventure ride in Western Montana. We had been bouncing around the fire roads and stopped for a photo op. When I hit the starter button- NOTHING!! Realizing that the battery wasn't charging meant heading back to civilization ASAP. I managed to kick start the bike and headed out for our lunch destination 18 miles away. When I got there I measured my battery at 8.6 Volts. It turned out to be a bad stator. I am waiting for that part to be delivered this week.
Nice pipe. I've had two DRZs and love the one I have now. I put the 3x3 airbox mod on. BTW, nice cherry bomb pipe on yers. I live out west and can 200+ mile range out of her..which simply cannot be done with a KTM, WR450, etc. Utah's west desert is absolutely awesome for DRZs. Smooth fire roads, endless views. Water and fuel are big problems. Loooong way between even small towns. IMHO the DRZ makes a fantastic trail bike where speeds are 45 mph or less. She's heavy but smooth. On the DRZ you can ride all day and not get the forearm pump or sore/tired a true dirt bike will give. I probably should have put a kick start on my bike but never did. And they can be dicey to restart after a layover or crash.
Well explained video..but i think when you try to cut and edit we missed your explanation in some places and parts. Hard to catch up for someone like me 😅😅 ..
Great video, I'm finding that the battery in mines is struggling starting that big thumper of an engine, would have been great if this came as standard, thanks man.
Awesome video mate i have the Australian E model with the fcr 39 carburettor the jetting stock over here is 45 on the pilot jet and 165 on the main jet if I recall correctly, so no jd jetting required over here in aus for extra power/responsiveness, if you use the needle from the jd jet kit it stops the down low bogging on cold start ups at idle its a fantastic bike, and just a small heads up if you didn't already know but be sure to put blue mid strength thread locker/lock tight on the stator bolts they have a tendency of coming loose over time and can cause issues.
@@Kyle_gallegher the stator bolts. They cam fall off and destroy everything in there. From lime 2003 or so on they started using loctite from the factory
mine is a 2000, I ordered from the dealer with the Kickstart installed at factory. The only time it came in handy was when I went to start it and it wouldn't turn over so I tried the kick-start and it wouldn't even budge, turned out that vacuum operated petcock failed and allowed fuel down into the cylinder head but other than that I've never had a need to use the kickstarter.
then you should probably SERVICE your bike more often!!........you can just Bump start the bike if battery dies, I've done this with 500lbs bike all day long, so a dirt bike is easy.
I think I used an EBC clutch basket tool, as for clutch disc removal I took all out in one shot and put them back in in layers and yup just the one bolt.
I also installed this kit on my bike. I thought the gear mesh between the two new gears seemed a bit loose during installation. Sure enough, after I had everything back together and starting the engine, I could hear chattering from those gears. I'm wondering if you had this same experience. If so, did the noise eventually stop?
@@skylarboysell9734 Hey, I started the bike up the other day and let it run for a while. So far the chatter hasn't returned. I'm thinking the gears were just dry for the first initial startup, and possibly just needed more oil saturation.
Can you provide the part number kick start kick you used? Also, did you end up needing to do the decompression lever? I’d assume it gets hard to start after being hot
I'm really thinking about doing drz400 on my LTZ400 atv quad.... Just trying to figure out that kick starter situation in the quad.... Spacing etc , anyone have an idea?!
@@sailingaeolus, seems like a good way to drop some weight. I'm sure that if an RM-Z450 can be kick started then a kick start would work fine on the DRZ-400.
@@toddbrackett4277 For a short time in early 2000s a DRZ-400 (no "s") variant was made with kick only, 39 FCR carb, bigger diameter exhaust and thinner base gasket. Nearly 50 hp and like 25 lbs lighter. To do all that to a DRZ-400s (note the "s" model) you might as well find an older WR450. I have a DRZ and WR450. The WR is a viscous bike compared to the DRZ, but the DRZ is soft, quiet and just pleasant to putt around on.
You can start your engine easily if the battery is dead or starter fails in the middle of nowhere out in the woods, without reporting to push starting.
just is cool lol. i mean this is a dual sport so i guess they want that feel of kickstart classic bikes. but this would be terrible on a street bike or something. u dont wanna have to leave ur engine running at a light just cause u know u gotta kickstart it every time the light turns green
Yeah, when it's late and the bike is too light to set off the sensor I just run the light, ain't nobody around anyhow (ironically stopping and starting with an electric starter is usually enough magnetic field to change the traffic signal)
so you'd rather push your bike if the battery goes flat? you can still use the electric start with the kickstarter installed. the kickstarter is a backup if the e start fails because you aren't push starting a drz in any kind of loose ground.

What time is it?
Jokes aside, great video! Gonna be a winter of motorcycle work after this summer! This will be on the list!
Great vid ,cheers
If you install such a kit on the drz400s, is it possible not to install a decompressor?
yes the only ones that have the decompressor is the E model, mine did not have it and I omitted it from the install.
wish the bike came with a kick starter and an FCR carb. no way i could do that job. what did the kit cost you?
Thanks for the videos
did you suppose to bend washer around nut for clutch basked ?
if it was supposed to be, it was done, if it is the lock washer you are referring to then yes 🙂

Do they make one for the 2020 s model? Plus it wouldn’t start without the key turned correct? Thanks
