So I worked there in the early 80s and loved the zoo for what it was then. I can now see it’s progressed so much more and it’s so incredible. I’m so glad that you shared this with us. I happen to work in the Hixson Bird house too. Now 40 years later I own the largest reptile store in Oregon if you’re ever down to Bend I’d love for you to stop in and say hey.
My opinion is going to the zoo is like going to an amusement park. It's not something you do everyday. With that, you expect to pay more for certain things. The difference with paying that extra bit of money to the zoo, is that you know it's going to a good cause and helping to maintain the care of all these wonderful animals. I personally have zero issue with the extra fees associated with getting closer to these amazing creatures. ❤ Great video Dāv!
This is one of America's best small zoos. I'm not from Texas but San Antonio is in my top 5 favorite American cities because I like family tourist destinations and San Antonio is very strong in that category. The zoo is charming and has an especially good reptile collection.
When zoo's work together to preserve species that are endangered.. It's called the SSP or Species Survival Plan. Keep up the GREAT work, good sir! Much respect and support from Yuma, AZ. 👍👍
I'd absolutely love your take on the Indianapolis Zoo - I'm a Chicago local and recently stopped in Indianapolis on my way through town. The primate team seems to be absolutely incredible, but the rest of the zoo left me wishing for so much more.
I visited this zoo back in 2012. Looks like lots of improvements and new areas that weren't there 12 yrs ago have been added. Zoos are my favorite places to go to see a small part of the world of animals & reptiles I'll never get to see in person in their natural habits.
I work at the zoo and it's so cool to see you tour around it! The reptile collection is pretty amazing, a few months ago the psychedelic rock geckos actually had some babies!! There's a lot of expansion projects going on at the moment as well, soon there will be gorillas and other expanded habitats.
I love zoo’s! For years, we had a family membership to the Houston zoo. Sadly, we only went a couple times a year (summer in Houston is not a great time to hang out outside!) but I kept renewing it because I thought it was a better way to spend money than most of the stuff I was blowing it on. I let it lapse several years ago after my youngest moved out.
Super excited to see that you visited the zoo in my hometown. And yes entrance is pretty pricey but we go when they have the $8 special, and don’t mind paying extra for our favorite exhibit
Hey Dav! If you are ever in the Waco Texas area we have a really amazing zoo called the Cameron Park Zoo. We have an orangutan cardiac camp where we go visit the orangutan sanctuaries and help teach them how to better help the rehabilitation of them. We are currently in the process of building a back footed penguin and Black footed cat exhibit and a state of the art Animal hospital. I would love to see you do a video on my Zoo!
Dav, if you ever make it to Cincinnati, I'll take you to the Cincinnati zoo. You'll get to see Fiona & Fritz- our hippos, Harambe's home and we have manatees too! I have a membership and it's free entry! 😉 just not when it's 95 degrees 😂 you can also do your "eats the world" video too and try Cincinnati chili (Skyline vs Gold star), Graeters ice cream and Montgomery Inn ribs! We have an aquarium very close in Northern Kentucky also! 😊
I live about a hour from San Antonio and go there alot for shopping and stuff and I love our zoo and Brackenridge Park! (Hope you rode the train!) Our zoo is smaller the most but it really is a great place to go!
You visited my local zoo? AMAZING! SA Zoo was successful in breeding the psychedelic gecko. And the male Jaguar is named Baluum. And the iguana is Blue, I believe.
Well... as someone whose local zoo is the St Louis Zoo (free admission), I think it's unfair. But not really because of the price... more because of the system. If there are going to be things that charge extra admission, they should be limited time features or things that are not required to experience the zoo fully (like train rides, carousel rides, special experiences like feeding or interacting directly with some of the critters), not standard parts of the zoo. Make the entrance fee higher, but don't nickel and dime people for the experience. I'm sure that a lot of people would probably prefer a lower entrance fee and choose if they want to pay more to go to certain places, but the problem is really the fact that the business model is deceptive - it's harder to fully perceive how much you're spending if you're spacing it out like that.
Its weird seeing a simi familiar sight of my local zoo. 7:45 oh i remember that spot. Last time i went i had a few friendly birds hanging out about 1ft away from me on the rails. 2 were even a parent and fledgling duo Yeah the painted dogs aren't shy. They're usually sleeping or hanging out next to a wall when i visit the zoo Fun fact, the long form of the name Hippo somewhat translates to water horse, but they're actually closer to dolphins than horses. So they're murderous river dolphins. I remember the 1st time i saw that chipucabra. I had a huge start, i could feel my heart pounding for a few moments.
I love the San Antonio Zoo! When I lived in Texas we used to go about once a year ❤ I'm split on the charging extra fir certain attractions. I suppose if the attraction is really cool, it's a way for the zoo to get more funding. I've been to a few that have a butterfly exhibit that you can walk through and it usually requires a additional ticket. For me, it depends.
Zoos/aquariums are facing the same issues with rising costs of food and utilities that the rest of us are, so the admission price makes sense. As far as charging more for the various experiences, it depends on if you have to pay extra to view that animal at all. If you get to see the giraffes without paying an extra fee, but the experience of interacting with them costs more, then again, it makes sense, they have to pay someone to staff that experience for you.
The reason the female ostrich had no feathers on her rear and back was due to repeated mounting by a male. The same thing happens in chickens and other large bodied birds where females and males are confined together.
We visited a year or two ago and they had a hole bunch of baby Komodo Dragons! I was wondering why they were co-habbing so many adult monitors then I read the sign 😂 they were tiny babies!! 😮
Yea. Its for the extra stuff like feeding them. The SA Zoo can get expensive. I ended up getting a membership there but you're still having to pay a lot of money. I think their membership is per person if I remember right.
Certain types of people are quick to disparage zoos and say animals dont belong in cages. That little gold frog is a prime example of why we need zoos. Good, accredited zoos have spacious environments for there charges and and try and give them the best captive life. If it wernt for zoos, many of us would hardly get to see these animals or learn about them. Good zoos also try to have a good reason for having what they have, not just for gawking at. The problem is more these privet road side attractions that really only care about the money they get from stupid tourist than the animals. They give ligit places, even good privet ones a bad rep. When a zoo like this one wants to charge extra for some encounters, i agree its for a valid reason and not just a cash grab. Its a good idea and something neat for a special occasion.
That 'cliff' in the aviary resembles nothing as much as a San Antonio cliff. Lots like it in that part of the state. I went to the zoo several times but it never looked as good as it does in your video. I typically made a beeline for the NIle croc (Boom is his name) and the tapirs, though I do remember the hippos, rhinos and kangaroos (surprised to hear the kangas have extra cost now!). I believe 'Coco' is their Orinoco croc's name. (my favorite species of croc) Are you going to show us your collection of zoo plastic figures?
Paying extra to see certain animals or exhibits just doesn't seem right to me. However, I totally get the giraffe feeding costing a bit more, or a behind the scenes tour.
Beautiful animals. Komodo Dragons would be nice to have at the zoo here in Sedgwick County. The Sedgwick County Zoo does not do this. It has gorillas, giant enclosures, etc. Every September they have a fundraiser called Zoobilee. Tickets are $200+ each. All the food n drink you can have. Auctions of stuff the animals painted, personal tours for extra money, etc. The SA zoo needs to learn how to raise more money.
Thanks for your comment and yes I know. It was a little confusing because I was talking about neon tetras but showing what they had in that exhibit at the time.
They were cardinal tetras not neons :) actually a better fish in my opinion because you get the red all along the underside instead of half and they're a bit bigger and sturdier - not as fragile about water quality
I think it is a little bit strange to charge more to see certain animals in the zoo, unless you were going to an interactaction type enclosure. I would understand if you were paying for something non-zoo related, like if we had a waterpark or bumper cars or something.
A lady in Pittsburgh where I live wanted to feed the painted dogs so bad but all she had was a toddler. Then she sued the zoo because they didn’t have any don’t feed the dogs your toddler signs . I feel she she be in prison because toddlers definitely aren’t their natural food
This video is packed full of more information than I would challenge another UA-camr to know off the top of their head, and me talking about neon tetras yet showing Cardinal tetras is all you pulled from this video? Try to be a little less condescending please.

Cool! I rarely make it to Oregon sadly but next time I'm there, I for sure check it out!

I love how when Steve flew away, he didn’t really fly away. He was still hanging out, just behind you. 😂❤
When zoo's work together to preserve species that are endangered.. It's called the SSP or Species Survival Plan. Keep up the GREAT work, good sir! Much respect and support from Yuma, AZ. 👍👍
Exactly. I may have not mentioned that in the video. Thanks!
Born, raised and still live in San Antonio. Its a nice little zoo. Very fitting for San Antonio.
I love this zoo. I have many fond memories going to it.
The butterfly place was magical. They were flying and mating like crazy. Super active compared to others I’ve been too
Those "neon tetras" are actually Cardinal Tetras. They get bigger and have some color differences.
I absolutely love these Zoo tours Dav. Super jealous you get to go all over the world to see all the awesome animals though haha.
Glad you enjoyed it
I'd absolutely love your take on the Indianapolis Zoo - I'm a Chicago local and recently stopped in Indianapolis on my way through town. The primate team seems to be absolutely incredible, but the rest of the zoo left me wishing for so much more.
I needed this. I miss my old city. It’s been almost ten years since I’ve been home.

Great video! It’s amazing how that bird was singing and her voice was so clear! Amazing!
Lol! I know right? So amazing!

Thanks Clistia!

Dope video dav! Love your content.
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying the videos!
I really do love these type of videos.
A few corrections in the aquarium part, those are bala sharks not silver tip minnows. Those are also cardinal tetras and not neon tetras
I was just down there in March with my family. I loved the Abronia Graminea (alligator lizards). They were so cool to me.

I will definitely check that out next time I'm in town!

I would like to see you review the St Louis Zoo. It was voted many times the best free attraction in the US.

I agree
My first venomous was a black tailed rattlesnake and it really was a sweetheart and smart
I forget how lucky I am growing up near the St. Louis zoo I expect all zoos to be free to get in lol.
Really disappointed that I didn't get to see you !! In my city

I wondered if that was a possible reason. Thanks for the info!
Miss it would been so cool to meet you
Go to reptilandia in Johnson city and the snake farm in new braunfels
We visited a year or two ago and they had a hole bunch of baby Komodo Dragons! I was wondering why they were co-habbing so many adult monitors then I read the sign 😂 they were tiny babies!! 😮
That's so cool!
Love the zoo ...i live in san Antonio
$36 bucks for entry then extra to see the dang kangaroos is ridiculous
Yea. Its for the extra stuff like feeding them. The SA Zoo can get expensive. I ended up getting a membership there but you're still having to pay a lot of money. I think their membership is per person if I remember right.
The Miami zoo has mold on Rama’s and I have a blue elephant and green monkeys I love the mold o Rama’s and the penny smashers
i smelled it for a second 😮
Wow❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Gotta come to the Memphis Zoo
That Victoria pigeon is called a Nicobar pigeon
Those are cardinal tetras. You can tell because the red goes all the way from front to back.
Yeah those Australian pigeons are cool looking but how venomous are they?
The wax animals are somewhat rare? They've had those machines for over 20 yrs. I remember them from around the age of 5.

I would love to go to your petstore bc neon tetras or any other tetras coast $3 or more per fish . Love your zoo tours.
Well tbh I haven't priced them out in a while :)
@@DavKaufmansAdventures lol I can tell fish now a days coast alot of money
Go to snake farm in San Antonio tx !!

If it's not clearly started at the entrance that there are additional venue entry fees they may have a problem .
True
Thanks for naming the grackle after me.
The add on charges are obnoxious.
No prob lol
Next visit, ask for a tour of their Texas Horned Lizard repopulation program!
They were cardinal tetras, not neons
Not fair!
What's not fair?
@@DavKaufmansAdventures That the Zoo charges admission & you also have to pay to see certain animal enclosures. I'd rather pay more to get in.

Cardinal tetras
CHUPACABRA!!!!!
There is no such thing as a Australian Tiger. That might be a Sumatran Tiger native to Sumatra.
Horrible zoo and they don’t treat the animals well especially the elephants
Those are not "neon" tetras but are actually cardinal tetras --try to get your information correct, please.
