Great video. This is exactly what I found (I own both devices as well). Elgato Cam Link 4K is just so simple to set up. Hey Tom! I am wondering if you could do a tutorial video on how to set up a gopro/camlink/rodecaster all together into OBS. I was planning to do this setup for my podcast but wanted to hear your thoughts... thanks!
Hey! I _think_ I just replied to an email from you about this, but the short answer is everything should automatically show up as an available source in OBS once connected to your computer 👍
New comment from me, actually a question... has anyone managed to use CamLink + good camera - with an iPad Pro? It would be so great to be able to run a ZOOM Meeting from an iPad and use external camera ...
Just one question to add to my earlier comment: Using OBS, the Cam Link 4K, and my mid-205 MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz Quad-Core i7, 16 GB DDR3 RAM, and AMD Radeon R9 2GB graphics card. My CPU useage by OBS cranks up to 240% of CPU in Activity Monitor, and my fan sounds like a steam engine. My little studio space picks it up via my LAV mic. Am considering switching to my Audio Technica AT2035 to limit sound picked up from behind the mic, or a shotgun mic, and if that doesn't work, switching to ECamm Live, since it's made for Macs (while OBS still has struggles with Mac OS). I'm torn, because I'm really liking OBS overall. The other option I have is to rebuild an old PC I have strictly for streaming, and continue using OBS. Good day Tom, Have you had any luck using a video switcher along with your ElGato Cam link 4k? I was looking to purchase the ElGato and use it with my Roland 1HD video switcher for live streaming, any recommendations/ suggestions? Thanks a Million in advance.
I’ve never used a traditional switcher with the camlink since things like the ATEM are their own capture cards, but you can run it into software like Ecamm and then use a Stream Deck for physical switching buttons.
There could be something happening with your specific system, but regardless of whether you're on PC or Mac, it should show up as an audio source as soon as it's connected with an HDMI input. It won't show up if it doesn't have an HDMI source coming into it.
Does the elgato camlink 4k allow audio input via HDMI? Have you incorporated audio embedded from the camera via HDMI into the computer? Its posibble with this capture card?
So, is this used as a hdmi Capture Card? I would like to start streaming on UA-cam and Facebook with my MacBook Pro and my Sony DSLR a 58. Thanks for your time.
Hi Tom! Fantastic content, super useful! Quick one: can the Cam Link 4K also pass-through audio that is captured from an on-camera video mic? I am wondering if the Cam Link would also show up as a mic source in Zoom... Have you tried it and experienced any audio sync issue?
Yes! It can be selected as an audio source, which makes for a super simple setup. I don't usually have sync issues, but sometimes I add a 10 frame delay in Ecamm Live. 👍
Is video recorded through the Camlink 4k directly to the computer worse quality or resolution than the recording would be using the internal recording of the camera? ( assuming my camera records 4k)
I can't say definitively since so much of that would depend on your camera, but I think the answer is yes. You'll always get the best results from either internal recording or via dedicated recorder.
Such calming video for one like me. Expecting my two CamLink 4K's after a 2 month wait as well as an Atem Mini Pro. I was scared away from CamLinks by some information on internet that they wouldn't work with USB-C hubs but need to be directly connected to the computer. i'm on a 2018 MacBook Pro 15” (maxed out back then), and I was planning to livestream guitar courses with my Sony A5100 and A7III, but then all of a sudden I wan't sure. Was even thinking of returning the CamLinks and getting the Elgato HD60S+ which are more expensive. But I guess I'll now take the risk with at least one of these and see if it works as nice as it does for you. Thanks for very good quality content Tom, binge watching now, subbed.
Glad it helped! Sounds like you'll be all set. I use my CamLink with my USB-C hub with no issues. It worked great on my 2013 MacBook too, so your 2018 should be totally good to go.
@@tombuck AND, sorry for screaming here, but yeah, it was a "Veni, Vidi, Vici" situation with the CamLink 4K. Got it today, it just works flawlessly with a Sony A5100, clean HDMI out, custom WB (3.200K), a little tweaked Standard Picture profile, fantastic and sharp video in ZOOM, Quick Time, OBS, the lens of choice is Sigma APSC 16mm F.1.4... Be aware though, whoever uses this little camera, it needs tweaking with the picture, otherwise you'll be getting a nice but washed out image with no contrast and sharpness. Here are the settings if you want (like me) a bit cooler image, on a blueish side: White Balance: choose C.Temp./filter, change to 3.200K (cooler look) Creative Style: Standard (Contrast +1, Saturation +1, Sharpness +-0) Even the "Landscape" Creative Style with out of the box settings (all on +-0) looks really nice.
I'm so glad to hear it, thanks for the update! I'm glad you were able to get your hands on one. It really is such a headache reliever. I'm staring at my CamLink right now and letting it know I appreciate it. 😬
Hi Tom, thanks for the video! I was wondering (and sorry if this question has already been asked, I couldn't find it), but do you know if with this device it's possible to see a still (taken with Blackmagic pocket 4K) on your computer directly? Thanks in advance!
Hey Lea! The Camlink will capture anything that's coming through an HDMI signal, so if your Blackmagic camera is outputting a still, that's what the Camlink will see 👍
I’m trying to get as close to my SD card as I can for local recordings with my Camlink. Any tips? I feel like I’m getting closer with CFR of 10 but the difference when uploading to UA-cam is still noticeable a bit 🤔
Thanks for the awesome video. It really helped me out. But 2 quick questions. Can you simply plug the camera cable directly to the HDMI port without Camlink? Now you are going with CamLink and Camlink going to USB?
@@tombuck hi Tom. I did setup with your help. Everything is working. But when my wakes up, camera is not working. I had to restart my computer. Did you have something like this in your experience?
@@tombuck Thanks!! :) I purchased the CamLink 4K and the Satechi Doc, but for some reason my camera display goes blank when I connect everything. I have a MacBook Air.
I've never had any lag at any resolution with the CamLink on an Intel MacBook/iMac or on M1 Mac Mini, MacBook Pro. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but I've never experienced it.
Hello, I use the Cam Link 4k but I'm having some issues with lag (~3-4 frames) when I record to Quicktime, use FaceTime/Zoom. Since these programs do not have the ability to delay audio (like OBS can), are there any workarounds?
That is tricky. The easiest solution I can think of is to run everything through OBS and either record there or use the virtual cam feature to send it to the app of your choice.
Hi I have an m50 with micro cam link setup for live streaming but cannot use another usb wire because the micro usb is plugged upside down and is blocking the way for me to plug in the usb cable. Any solution? Trying to livestream with out the screen shutting off
this may be a question that you have probably already gotten, and this probably sounds dumb; but, I am still new to the entire recording and streaming world. Essentially, I want to use a mic, camera, that does not have a USB connection, and MacBook pro, and in some cases I want to only be able to use a camera and a lapel mic. Could you maybe provide a summary of what software and techs you would use in these two different situations?
Not a dumb question at all! It can easily get confusing to figure out how everything works and there are a million ways to accomplish the goal. I do have a video about live-streaming basics: ua-cam.com/video/BzRQr_GFeFw/v-deo.html But to summarize: you’ll need software on your MacBook. I love Ecamm Live but OBS is a free alternative. You’ll need an hdmi capture card for your camera. The elgato Camlink is the simplest option, and the ATEM Mini is great if you want to use more than one camera. If you’re using a usb mic you can run it straight into your computer. Otherwise you’ll need an audio interface like the Scarlett 2i2 (which will also let you connect a lav mic). Those are the basics 👍
I’ve only ever used one, but in theory, you could plug one in to each USB port. If you’re looking to connect more than one camera, something like the ATEM Mini is the way to gnn
I honestly don't remember that brand, but it's a Mini HDMI to standard HDMI cable from Amazon. If you like colored cables, check out what Kondor Blue has- they're super nice.
@@tombuck Thanks for the info. I'm gonna buy one soon. Have been using a cheap hdmi capture card from unknown brand and it just stopped working suddenly. Till the Camlink arrives I will use the USB streaming feature of the zv1
Hi Tom, a great vid. I have just purchased a Canon EOS M Mark ii which came with EFM 15-45mm lens. Sitting on top is the RODE Vieomic Pro. and a Phottix 10 inch ring light (might need a few more lights The guy at the camera store recommended the elgato Cam Link 4K. I am now experimenting as a rank novice and so appreciate your vids and advice. I have collected so many mics over the years and can't wait to start trying them.
@@tombuck I'll ask you another thing… I read a post on a forum about the elgato 4k60: "...by default the card will send only 4:2:0 to capture software like OBS Studio, Xsplit, etc. To enable 4:2:2 capture, you'll need to make a small change inside of our 4K Capture Utility. Make sure OBS Studio is closed. Then open the 4K Capture Utility. Then press CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + U. This will open a special menu. On the top left you should see "Device ", click on this. On the right side, scroll down until you find "Device Enable Native 4:2:2". Where it says False, type in True and hit enter. Then close this menu, and close 4K Capture Utility. There are a lot of things in this menu that can mess things up, so we don't suggest making random changes unless Support instructs you to. Inside of OBS Studio, go to the 4K60 Pro layer properties. And for Color Format, choose YUY2. OBS Studio should now be accepting 4:2:2 from the card." I'm wondering if the same stuff is possible with the CamLink... thank you very much
that mini recorder will literally make you give up on your dreams. Source: I gave up streaming becaues of how unreliable it was. Now that the cam link 4k price is slashed, maybe I'll try it again :)
Hey Tom! I'm using the Elgato Cam Link 4k with StreamYard..works great. But i've recently updated my camera to Canon XA40 4K. I'm starting to have audio syncing issues. Is there a particular camera frame rate i need to be using? Currently using 24p. And I have Streamyard video quality set to 1080p. Also i'm using the Rodecaster Pro with this setup.
Hey ! Great Video ! I got lucky and was able to get myself a cam link at retail price. But my main goal is to do local recordings with gameplay and use my dslr camera. Will I need a cam link if I'm using a Sony a6400? Or should I just record and sync it up together in post-production. Thanks!
It depends on what’s easiest for you, really. Sony might have an app that lets you connect the camera via USB too. If you want to connect multiple sources, you could try to find something like the ATEM Mini, which take 4 hdmi inputs, and then send that signal to the camlink and computer.
I tried the Cam Link 4k, and it would freeze on me after 20 seconds. I was using it with Wirecast (which Wirecast doesn't support it) so that could have been the main issue. But I ended up returning it and getting the BM Intensity Pro 4k, and that works great. But I wish the Cam Link worked because then I can take it with me wherever I go.
Tom, fyi, I am see ads on a few recent of your videos. I thought you opted to not do the yt ad model? I don't understand how it all works, and I'll still watch. Thought I might take the no ad approach if I ever get past 1000, just trying to understand how it works. Jim
I’ve been toying around with skippable adds this month. Now that the channel has grown a bit, it provides enough revenue to cover some of my costs (like closed captioning and music), so I thought it’d be worth revisiting. When I first became eligible to monetize, I think the monthly income was something like $6, so it just wasn’t worth making people sit through ads for that.
That’s odd- I’ve tried it on a bunch of different computers with lots of different software, and it’s just been a plug & play situation. Wonder what the issue is 😕
I have Sony fx3 hooked up to Camlink and going through USB to USBC connector on MacBook Pro m1. It does not recognize as a camera in FCPX. It does in QuickTime and FaceTime. What gives? Should be simple to record direct from a camera shouldn't it?
Hi Tom. Love your videos. I have a Canon SL2 and am just getting into live-streaming. The Canon shuts off the video at 30 minutes due to that EU tax limitation. How do you keep the camera from not turning off?
When streaming, the camera isn't recording, so the time limit doesn't apply. You should be able to disable the auto power off and the camera will stay on as long as it has power. Similarly, if you use the Canon EOS Webcam Utility, the camera won't turn off.
@@tombuck thanks so much for your reply Tom. Yup, I'm using the Canon EOS Webcam Utility only for streaming, and have disabled the auto power off too, and it still shuts off at 30 minutes. Kind of throwing my hands up in the air at this point! Thanks for your help!
So I just discovered a new problem And you seem to be the only one that will know this. I’m screen recording on my Mac with obs Watching videos on UA-cam making Music reactions And the audio isn’t as good, recorded as while I’m listening to youtube I play it back and it’s close… It’s almost as good but not quite as studio juicey Like going from lossless to 192 mp3 or something. Man I can relate to this soo much,,I have this blackmagic mini recorder since 2017 and I have used occasionally with my Facebook Live stream using my iMAC, like you mentioned it has always given problem...never got it to work the first time..Now that my iMAC is dead and im using windows laptop...luckily I do have the thunderbolt port on the laptop, but cannot get it to work properly..the signal out of this is crapy now ...recently I have order Elgato Camlink 4K and hoping to use that for my future live-streams...
@@tombuck, thanks for your reply. I ordered one and it is expected to be here on Monday. I have a camera that is compatible with Cam Link 4K, but I am not sure if this will work with Character Animator. However, on Adobe's website, they write that all you need is a webcam. And on Elgato's website they write that products that use the UVC protocol should work in any application that support webcams. But I have also read about people who struggled to connect their webcams. I guess I have to try to see if it works, and if not - I will just return the product.
@@tombuck I thought I would ask you: I got my Cam Link 4k! However, I can only run the viewfinder. If I go to live view, it switches off to viewfinder right away. Does that mean my camera is incompatible? Is that how it looks like?
It depends on your camera since they all handle hdmi output a little differently. Most cameras have some kind of hdmi out setting that should give a few options to try out.
If you already have an HDMI adapter where you can use it to connect your camera to your labtop, can this way be used instead to turn your camera into a webcam??
@@tombuck Just to be clear - in my case, since I already have an HDMI adapter that will connect my camera to my labtop, then we do NOT need to get the Camlink. In other words, can you use an HDMI to USB adapter to replace the video capture card??
Hey I also have a Camlink 4K with my Sony ZV E10, and I record on StreamYard. I notice a bit of latency between the video (my mouth moving) and the audio. Have you noticed this? It's not terrible but it's really not great. Definitely worse than what I see on this video. Any thoughts on a fix?
This is a normal thing any time you combine audio and video signals. I don't know if Streamyard has an audio delay option, but if they don't you could run everything through OBS and add an audio delay there (then use OBS' virtual camera for Streamyard and stuff).
I cannot believe this is selling on Amazon for over $400 as of right now in 2020! It's sold out EVERYWHERE. I found one for $90 I hope I did not fall for a scam 😤 #quarantine
$400?! That's insane. I read yesterday that Amazon had banned a number of sellers for price gouging during the pandemic. I know the CamLink has been sold out everywhere, but it's definitely not something to pay $400 for. Yikes.
I've talked to several other people who all have the same issue with it, so we're not alone. I did recently get the BlackMagic ATEM Mini to use when teaching my online classes, and so far it's been really plug and play, so who knows?
Can this also take 4K in but output into the laptop as 1080p? I don't need 4K input to laptop for the likes of Zoom. Thanks. Or else, I was looking at the HD 60S+. Thanks in advance for any help. Liked.
Yes, you can set whatever resolution you'd like in your computer's software. I use mine for Zoom pretty much every day now. I haven't used the HD 60S+, but it seems to be a popular choice too.

What's the adapter you use to connect the el gato to mac?
Here are the settings if you want (like me) a bit cooler image, on a blueish side:
White Balance: choose C.Temp./filter, change to 3.200K (cooler look)
Creative Style: Standard (Contrast +1, Saturation +1, Sharpness +-0)
Even the "Landscape" Creative Style with out of the box settings (all on +-0) looks really nice.
I'm so glad to hear it, thanks for the update! I'm glad you were able to get your hands on one. It really is such a headache reliever. I'm staring at my CamLink right now and letting it know I appreciate it. 😬
Absolutely true! Had terrible problems with the bm thunderbolt 2 accessory! I was saved by legato
Love the ease of use from elgato.
Hi Tom, thanks for the video! I was wondering (and sorry if this question has already been asked, I couldn't find it), but do you know if with this device it's possible to see a still (taken with Blackmagic pocket 4K) on your computer directly? Thanks in advance!
Hey Lea!
The Camlink will capture anything that's coming through an HDMI signal, so if your Blackmagic camera is outputting a still, that's what the Camlink will see 👍
so if I connect this to my work laptop where I cannot download any software or drivers, it should show up as a webcam ?
It should, i\unless there’s so,e super strict security settings that don’t allow peripherals at all.
@@tombuck crappy usb webcams work normal thou
I’m trying to get as close to my SD card as I can for local recordings with my Camlink. Any tips? I feel like I’m getting closer with CFR of 10 but the difference when uploading to UA-cam is still noticeable a bit 🤔
Hmm, I’m not too sure off the top of my head. I still stick with SD cards for reliability.
Thanks for the awesome video. It really helped me out. But 2 quick questions. Can you simply plug the camera cable directly to the HDMI port without Camlink? Now you are going with CamLink and Camlink going to USB?
Likely, no, because even if your computer has an hdmi port, it’s probably for output and not input (totally depends on your computer though).
Thanks Tom. I now understand.
@@tombuck hi Tom. I did setup with your help. Everything is working. But when my wakes up, camera is not working. I had to restart my computer. Did you have something like this in your experience?
Great video :) Thanks !
You're welcome!
Does it require you to be in live view mode? It won't display video unless in live view
It depends on your camera's HDMI output. On my Canons and GoPros, they automatically switch over as soon as I plug it in.
Great to know the downfalls of the blackmagic solution. Thanks!
Love this video
Thank you! 🙏
Does the Elgato Cam Link work with a MacBook Air, or do you require a Mac Book Pro?
It’ll work with the Air 👍
@@tombuck Thanks!! :) I purchased the CamLink 4K and the Satechi Doc, but for some reason my camera display goes blank when I connect everything. I have a MacBook Air.
That sounds like an hdmi setting within the camera that needs to be adjusted 🤔
@@tombuck Thank you so much!! I appreciate it. It is working now. :)
Great news!
I find that google meet doesn’t support the camlink 4k. It says camera failed. It works in OBS, zoom etc.
Does it work for you?
By any chance has anyone used this with a Nikon D5200 successfully?
Thanks!
people say it starts lagging after 6 minutes of using in 4k on macbook pro. Do you think it would work fine in full hd?
I've never had any lag at any resolution with the CamLink on an Intel MacBook/iMac or on M1 Mac Mini, MacBook Pro. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but I've never experienced it.
Any idea if this would work with an iPad Pro (2018), using UA-cam via Safari Browser? If so, this would make for a a great mobile live-streaming rig!
That would be great! I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ll have to experiment and see.
Is this also compatible with action cam/smartphone?
It’s an hdmi converter, so it just needs an hdmi source 👍
Can this be used in lieu of an external video recorder?
Like an Atomos? You can definitely record to the computer, but I don’t know if it will give the same quality as a dedicated recorder 🤔
@@tombuck Yeah I was wondering if I could save myself some money instead of getting an Atomos or Blackmagic Assist.
Can I use for digital camera too
It’ll work with anything that has an HDMI output 👍
@@tombuck it has USB output only
The CamLink only has HDMI input
Can you just use the pcie capture card instead of using the cam link ?
If you have one, sure!
Trying to livestream with out the screen shutting off
I’m using this connect to my canon t6i but it’s not showing anything but the Elgato screen. Help
this may be a question that you have probably already gotten, and this probably sounds dumb; but, I am still new to the entire recording and streaming world.
I do have a video about live-streaming basics: ua-cam.com/video/BzRQr_GFeFw/v-deo.html
But to summarize: you’ll need software on your MacBook.
Waiting to collect my Elgato Camlink4k this week jumped as soon as I saw price drops
I'm so glad they're available at the regular price! The price gouging was getting really out of hand.
@@tombuck that price gouging was absolutely insane 🤦♂️
How many cam links can you plug into a single MacBook?
I’ve only ever used one, but in theory, you could plug one in to each USB port. If you’re looking to connect more than one camera, something like the ATEM Mini is the way to gnn
Could you still run the atem through livestream and get all the titling and playback features?
I need the blue cable you have going into the cam link! Where can I find that
I honestly don't remember that brand, but it's a Mini HDMI to standard HDMI cable from Amazon. If you like colored cables, check out what Kondor Blue has- they're super nice.
Does it heat up a lot?
Not in my experience. It gets a little warm sometimes, but that's about all.
@@tombuck Thanks for the info. I'm gonna buy one soon. Have been using a cheap hdmi capture card from unknown brand and it just stopped working suddenly. Till the Camlink arrives I will use the USB streaming feature of the zv1
The CamLink should be a lot more reliable and hopefully work better for you 👍

Sounds like you've got a great setup going! The Cam Link is definitely the way to go for a simple, reliable, and high quality capture card 👍
is it possible to record with a 4:2:2 chroma subsampling?
As far as I know, the CamLink doesn't support 4:2:2, but I could be wrong.
@@tombuck Thanks a lot
@@tombuck I'll ask you another thing…
I read a post on a forum about the elgato 4k60:
"...by default the card will send only 4:2:0 to capture software like OBS Studio, Xsplit, etc.
OBS Studio should now be accepting 4:2:2 from the card."
I'm wondering if the same stuff is possible with the CamLink...
thank you very much
that mini recorder will literally make you give up on your dreams.
Source: I gave up streaming becaues of how unreliable it was.
Now that the cam link 4k price is slashed, maybe I'll try it again :)
Agreed. RIP my dreams 🪦
Hmm, I don't know how to do it in Streamyard, but you need to add an Audio Delay. Most streaming software has the feature because it's a common issue.
@@tombuck i'll check it out. Thanks!
Hello, thanks for the review, Does it compatible with Canon dslr 760D?
Any camera with an HDMI out will work. I just don't know if that camera sends a "clean" HDMI signal.
Does this work with the M1 macs
It sure does!
How strange. Must have been a software issue then? Glad you found something that works though!
I agree with all of that, I was wondering. Thanks!
Anytime Jim!
I tried one and couldn’t get it to work. Could have been my adapter. Really need to figure this out. May have to get another. Thanks
That’s odd- I’ve tried it on a bunch of different computers with lots of different software, and it’s just been a plug & play situation. Wonder what the issue is 😕
*_Hi Tom How are you? Very nice video.!!! I would like to ask you about the HDMI cable. are they mini, macro_* Thank you.

I have Sony fx3 hooked up to Camlink and going through USB to USBC connector on MacBook Pro m1. It does not recognize as a camera in FCPX. It does in QuickTime and FaceTime. What gives? Should be simple to record direct from a camera shouldn't it?
Hmm, I'm not entirely sure, but it sounds like it might be an issue with the USB to USB C connector?

I’m sure you’ll have much better luck with the Cam Link. It’s much more reliable!
Is it possible to use this with Adobe Character Animator?
I'm not 100% sure, but it'll take any HDMI input, so it depends on if that's what you need for your workflow. 👍
@@tombuck, it worked!
So, do you actually record with camera, or that's not necessary?
You don’t need to, but it’s always an option
@@tombuck Ah, cool. Thanks for letting me know.
Do I still need this if I’m using an ATEM Mini
I haven’t used the Mini yet, but I THINK it has built in capture abilities, so you shouldn’t need anything else.
If you already have an HDMI adapter where you can use it to connect your camera to your labtop, can this way be used instead to turn your camera into a webcam??
Definitely! That's one of the most common uses of the CamLink 👍
@@tombuck Or I guess I could just detach audio and video in postproduction software and manually align it better myself.
I have the cam link myself and it's awesome! I mean, who wants to do some weird voodoo witchcraft to live stream ;D
